Edge of Eternity

#4 of National Poetry Writing Month

Poem I wrote about outer space for National Poetry Month.

What lies at the farthest reaches

of the universe?

What exists out beyond the edge

of space when there are no

stars to light the sky or planets

to fill the void?

What lies at the edge of eternity

with no light, no warmth, no life?

What lies beyond the yawning abyss

we know simply as space?

Where does the universe end if

it can be said to end at all?

Is there place where even the

emptiness of space ceases to exist?

And all there is to be found is nothing?

Is there anything out beyond the void?

Or is it just sitting there waiting

for the emptiness to be filled with

stars and galaxies to numerous for

our fragile human minds to number?

Does it just go on forever or

is there something else out there

beyond the edge of eternity?

We spend our lives searching for life

out there beyond the stars. Somewhere.

Anywhere. In any way possible.

Is it because we are naturally

such curious beings?

Or is the thought that we are truly

alone in a vast and empty universe

just too frightening a thought to bear?

You Don't Need To Understand

* * * I don't understand. I don't get it. This doesn't make sense. What do you mean? Why not? Why can't you? What's the problem? We've all heard these words and we've all spoken them at least once in our lives. We found ourselves caught...
