The Howl in the Night

Chapter 2

"Did you remember to bring extra clothes?" asked Hank as the car pulled up to the school.

Jacob nodded while rolling his eyes, "Yes, I did mom, now quite worrying, I'll be fine," he smiled toward his older brother patting his shoulder.

Hank looked over to his younger brother and reached over to ruffle the brown hair while smiling. "I know, but I can't help but worry," he gave Jacob a sad smile.

"You don't need to, it's going to be like when I slept over to David's or Amy's," said to try and calm his brother's worries.

"Yeah, but you didn't take a charter bus to go to their place or spent a week there too," Hank replied trying to smile again but couldn't hide the worry which his brother noticed.

"What's wrong Hank?" Jacob asked.

The older brother tried to wave off the question, "Nothing, nothing at all." He unbuckled his belt and opened the car door, "Come on, let's get your back," he then shut the door before Jacob could inquire any further.

Jacob followed suite and stud before his brother at the trunk of the car staring at him, "Hank, what's wrong? Tell me."

Hank looked down at his brother and closed eyes as he let out a sigh, "You remember the night we last saw mom and dad?" Jacob nodded, "You said you had a bad feeling something was going to happen." Jacob thought about it before agreeing with another nod, "I-I have that feeling now, I feel like something going to happen while you're gone," he continued.

Jacob just blinked at his brother before reaching up to wrap his arms around his brother's neck, "Things will be fine Hank, they will."

Hank wrapped his arms around his little brother, "Yeah, they will." As much as he tried to sound convincing, both him and Jacob knew it wasn't.

The brother's broke away and finished their good byes. Jacob climbed onto the bus and took his seat with Amy and David next to a window. He looked out and waved bye one last time to his brother. The buses pulled out of the parking lot and onto the road, a hour long journey to the mountains and the resort.

Jacob was deep into the book, reading about how the Bilbo Baggins was being dangled by his feet hair over a fire while trolls discussed how to eat him, when David waved a small plastic card before his eyes.

"What is this?" Jacob took the card and looked at it closer. A picture of him, it was a driver's liaisons, but the information on the card was wrong, it read he was 21 and his name was Richard Gales. Jacob looked up at his friend who smiled wickedly down at him. "You've got to be kidding me, we promised Hank we wouldn't," stated Jacob.

David shrugged and smiled wider, "I had my fingers crossed."

Amy held up her crossed fingers, "So did I," then proceeded to stick out her tongue.

Jacob put his head in his free hand and sighed, "You two are going to be the death of me."

Amy chuckled and wrapped an arm around his neck, "Aw, don't say that, we're just living up your life," to which she gained a head shake from her friend.

"Fine, fine, I'll go it," declared an annoyed Jacob. Both David and Amy let out a little victory call as Jacob pocketed the liaisons.

The rest of the trip was uneventful as the buses headed up the mountain roads till the sight of the resort came into view.

The resort was not just one building, but five massive buildings built and owned by the wealth DeWolf Family. There were a series of cable cars to the tallest peaks, chair lifts to the smaller peaks, and rope tows to the small hills that surrounded the resort.

The buses pulled up into the circle drive and began to unload its contents of teenagers and teachers. Jacob, Amy, and David all followed the chaotic group to the check in desk. It took 20 minutes for the principle to get the rooms and call to order the mass of young adults who were all discussing their plans. The principle called out students who were partnered up for rooms. Jacob and David where partnered to boy's rooms while Amy was partnered to a classmate from her art class in the girl rooms on the other side of the hallway.

"So, you and Amy going over to the resort's equipment shop to rent gear?" asked David as he detached his snowboard from his bag.

Jacob nodded while he sat his bag down on his bed, "Yeah, we don't know how to ski well, so we're going over to the beginner's slops."

"Aw, come on man, should come up to the advanced slops with me," David smiled over at his friend.

Jacob smiled back, "Yeah, and get my leg broken in the process."

"I'll be there to make sure that that doesn't happen," David replied with a wink.

Jacob rolled his eyes and smiled they both broke out into laughter.

A knock at the door earned both of their attention before David went over and opened it to find Amy standing there.

"Hey David," she said before she pushed him out of the way to grab Jacob and pull him out the door. "Come on before all the good stuff is taken," she called out only giving Jacob enough time to grab the door and close it behind them as he was dragged away.

Jacob and Amy took fifteen minutes to find the store, then another twenty minutes to sift through the coats, snow pants, ski rods, and skies. While Amy went to try on a jacket she claimed was super cute, Jacob continued to look through the skies. Half way through one rack he side stepped into someone.

"Oh, sorry," Jacob muttered while trying to step around him before he bumped into him again this time losing his balance. Before he fell back, a set of arms grabbed his hips and held him tight.

"Whoa there, you ok?" came from the person who was holding Jacob uncomfortably close. Jacob turned his head up toward the source of the voice. Above him stood a slightly older boy, maybe his early 20's. He looked to be about Hank's height, maybe taller; he had a distinct five o'clock shadow. His black hair was cut short, and he had five claw marks running down the left side of his face. Three of them were over his cheek, one over his left eye, and one over the left side of his nose. Then his eyes, they were blue on the outside that transitioned into green.

Those eyes, they pulled Jacob in, his chest tightened up and his breath was caught in his throat as he stared into them. His nose flared and his eyes closed as if savoring the scent of a flower before his eyes opened to fix on Jacob with a smile sliding on his face. The look on the other's face made his heart quicken in both fear and excitement, of which, Jacob didn't know.

"You ok," ask the stranger.

Jacob slowly crocked out a, "Uh y-yeah, I'm good." Jacob then took a step back and barely saw the disappointed look on the stranger's face before it vanished.

"Jacob, come on," yelled Amy who came running over, grabbing Jacob's arm before looking up at the stranger and smiling wide before giggling. "Hi," she breathed out and blushed.

The stranger looked over at her and gave her a small smile, "Hi," then he turned back to Jacob and his smile widened. "See you around Jacob." Then he turned around and walked away leaving Jacob unsure of what that ment.

Amy then yanked Jacob's arm turning him to face her, "Who is that? How do you know him? Tell me," she ordered while shaking him.

"I-I don't know," he replied while grabbing her hands and stopping her, "Stop shaking me for goodness sakes."

Amy let him go and gave him an apologetic look, "Sorry, it's just you don't find a hottie like that every day," she motioned in the stranger's direction. "The scars are a nice touch too, gives him the hot bad boy look," she smiled and fanned herself.

Jacob just rolled his eyes and grabbed her wrist before pulling her toward the cash register, "Come on Cinderella, you can look for your prince charming later." While he dragged her away he couldn't help but look back toward the exit where the mystery man vanished, and wonder if he'd see him again.
