Part 1 - End of the Road
#1 of Running to the Edge
Well here is Part one of a story series I've been working on. Been a long time since i have actually posted anything so here we go with something new and something i enjoyed writing. I only hope you enjoy reading it.
All my best and thank you for reading.
^.=.^
The truck shook violently as it went over a pot hole, the small human in the passenger seat being awoken from his sleep by it. Blinking his eyes a few times to clear his vision, Sorren yawned and stretched as best as he could in his seat. Reaching into his pocket he pulled out his glasses and slid them on before looking over at the driver.
"Where are we sir?" He asked, holding back another yawn.
"We are about ten minutes from the next town kid. Are you sure you are ok with being dropped off there?" The large bear asked, looking at the small human. Sorren just nodded his head and began to tighten his coat around him.
The weather outside hadn't improved since he fell asleep nearly an hour ago. Heavy snow fell and he could barely see a few feet of the road in front. Sorren should have expected this kind of weather here in Alaska.
"What's your plan kid?" The ursine questioned.
"Rest up for a few days and then continue on my way. That's all I can do for the moment, but I have relatives that live on the coast." Sorren replied rather blankly, his chocolate brown eyes not revealing any emotional response that the driver picked up on immediately.
"As long as you'll be ok kid, you can have my mobile number just in case you need help." The bear offered with a chuckle, holding out one of his cards to the boy. Sorren took it gratefully and nodded his head.
"Thank you sir, but I hope that I won't need to use it." The human said leaning back in his chair and sighing out softly.
Throwing his large bag over his shoulders, Sorren slowly began to climb down from the truck, stopping once as the driver spoke to him one last time.
"Hey kid, I don't know what you are running from but if you ever need help just call my number. I promise I'll get to you as soon as I possibly can." The bear said, emphasizing the last few words before offering the human his paw. Sorren nodded his head and shook it softly, trying not to focus on the paw dwarfing his hand.
"I know, thank you sir. I'll do my best so I don't have to burden you but if I have to I will call you." The human looked at the bears eyes, seeing how concerned and worried the fur was for him. Holding his emotions back like he always did, the boy climbed down and closed the cab's door.
The bear sighed as he watched the door close. He had picked up a fair few hitchhikers in his time, but none of them as young as the young man who was now standing to the side. Waiting patiently to wave him off, as a final show of respect and thanks for the hospitality and kindness the bear had shown him for the past 200 miles they had travelled together.
Taking a few steps back Sorren waved as he watched the large truck begin to pull away. Then he stood there until it was gone from sight, before beginning to look around at his surroundings. Once again he was on his own. He tried to not let that thought rule him, calming himself down as he fought back his nerves.
His breath was misting with each exhale. It was colder then he had expected, still, and so he stuffed his hands into his coat pockets. Slowly he began to make his way back into town, the snow beneath his feet crunching softly with each step.
Sorren pulled his hood over his head. He didn't want anyone to see his face, in his situation it was for the best. Looking around Sorren observed that the town was about average in size, smoke billowed out of the chimneys of each house that Sorren walked past. The wind was harsh and, despite not being very strong, the sheer cold of it made the human's jaw clench as the cold stung his cheeks.
"I think I'll regret not heading some place warmer, but I'm here now. So I can't exactly change my mind now." Sorren whispered to himself.
Looking around he tried to spot a café or some place that would be serving something warm to quench his parched throat and warm his bones. Wandering through the unfamiliar streets slowly began to tire him out, still half asleep from his nap in the truck. Sorren had to stop for a minute.
Sitting down on a bench he sighed and shivered. Trying to focus his thoughts and think of a plan of what he could do in the next couple of hours.
"Excuse me, but are you lost?" A voice from behind asked. Not turning his head Sorren just nodded.
"Yes I am actually. I just got into town. Would you be able to tell me where I may get something to eat and drink?" Sorren replied, lowering his voice to make himself sound older then he was.
"Sure, if you head down this street and take the first left you'll find an inn called The Snow Fox. They'll have what you need." The voice said.
"Thank you sir" Sorren said as he stood up and began to head the way he had been told.
The large Orca watched as the human headed of towards the inn, an eyebrow raised in confusion at the conversation he had just shared with the boy. Gideon was able to tell that the human was young, too young to be on his own. From the size of his bag, his accent and the way he acted, Gideon was sure that the boy was either homeless, or a runaway.
Either way, the orca was determined to keep an eye out on the boy while he stayed at the inn; after all, it was his job to take care of his patrons. Laughing to himself he slowly began to follow the boy, not intentionally, the human just happened to be heading to the exact place that he worked.
Sorren banged his boots against the floor to knock the snow from him before walking into the inn. The warmth that came from a large, open fire washed over him immediately and made his body shiver from comfort. Slowly he slid his hood from around his face; the main reception room was empty, only populated with a few chairs and a sofa. An open fire blazed away to itself towards the back wall, the heat washing over the entire room.
Walking over to the reception desk, Sorren waited patiently for a few minutes, but when nobody turned up he rang the little bell. When again there was no response, Sorren began to slowly get nervous. Shuffling his feet a little and tapping his fingers against the wood of the desk.
"I am so sorry to have kept you waiting young Sir." A voice said from the stairs to his left. Sorren nearly jumped out of his skin. Turning his gaze to the stairs he watched as a tall orca slowly descended.
"It's ok, I am sure that you were busy." Sorren said quickly. Barely above a whisper as he looked down at the floor. Gideon couldn't help but let out a slight chuckle as he took his place behind the reception desk.
"So how may I help you?" The orca asked as he looked down at the small human. Sorren didn't answer at first; he couldn't help but gaze up at the older male. He was just so tall and big. At best guess Sorren put the orca at around nearly 6 foot 7, and the belly that he had suited the orca's physique perfectly. The boy found it oddly alluring but he shook those thoughts from his mind quickly. Returning his gaze once again back down at the floor.
"How much is a room sir?" Sorren asked.
"Well the rooms we have are around $57 dollars a night, and that includes meals as well." Gideon said as he reached down and grabbed the check in book.
"Could I have a single room then please for a period of 3 days then please." Sorren enquired as he reached into his bag and pulled out his wallet.
"Of course you can, I'll just need your name please." Gideon noticed the boy freeze at the mention of giving his name.
"My.... My name is David, David Jones." Sorren said rather quietly. He couldn't let there be any evidence of him staying here. Taking out $200 dollars from his wallet, he handed it to the orca once he had written down the fake name.
When the orca took the money, he couldn't help but notice a burn mark on the boy's left wrist. It was a brand mark. One that Gideon had seen before and nearly shook him to the core. The boy was quick to pull down his sleeve though
Gideon now knew who the boy was running from. Memories from the orca's past flashed through his mind. Gideon was now determined to make sure they didn't get the human.
"You do know this is more then is required?" Gideon said taking the human's money. Acting like nothing had happened.
"I know, but that's just in case of anything extra." Sorren said as he put his wallet back away securely and took the key the orca had grabbed from behind him.
"You have room 12, go up stairs and it's down the corridor to your left." Gideon said, watching as the boy just nodded his head and proceeded up the stairs.
Walking into his room, Sorren was sure to lock it behind him. Letting out a sigh of relief he leaned against the door. Sorren slid his bag off and threw it into a corner before flopping down on the bed.
"Thank god he didn't ask too many questions." Sorren said out loud as he leaned up, looking around the room. It was pretty simple, a chest of drawers for his clothes, a wash basin and a bedside table. It was nice, and gave him a sense of some security that he hadn't felt in some time. But only by a little bit.
"Ok, I'll stay here for three days and then hail a ride from another trucker, hopefully one will be heading towards the coast." Sorren planned out loud as he ran his fingers through his raven black hair. A knock on the door made the boy freeze.
"David, I have the information you'll need about meal times and also some pamphlets about stuff you may wish to do during your stay."
Getting up from the bed Sorren walked over to the door slowly. Unlocking it and opening it up to see the orca standing there with a few pieces of paper held out or him.
"Thank you sir" He said politely. Taking the papers and smiling as best as he could to show his appreciation.
"The name is Gideon, if you need anything just call for me ok." The orca said, standing there. Wanting to say more to him but was afraid of scaring the child. Sorren hesitated at the orca's words. The way he stood there. It was like he was waiting for him to say something else.
In the end Sorren simply nodded his head again and closed the door to his room. He made sure to lock it again before he began unpacking, trying his hardest to rid himself of troublesome thoughts.
The first day passed by uneventfully. The food at the inn was delicious, as were the mugs of hot chocolate that he had every night before going to sleep. Despite the bed being comfortable and warm, he couldn't sleep more then a few hours without bolting up in bed. Looking around the room anxiously as memories of his dreams came back.
Only when he had assured himself that he was alone in the room and that door was locked could he get back to sleep.
Sorren hadn't left the inn since arriving. Most days he was found in the common room, curled up into a corner of one of the sofa's reading. Despite the welcome warmth of the open fire that seemed to be constantly lit, and the choice of sofa's that he found himself getting stuck in, Sorren was still too nervous about going out in public. But here in the confines of the inn, he could make sure as few people as possible saw his face.
Gideon had kept an eye on the boy while he was working, always trying to be where the boy was. Knowing what was wrong; the orca was determined to not allow events to happen as they had to him already. He had already failed once before and it had cost him a lot. He would not allow himself to fail this boy and Gideon was determined to protect this child no matter what the coast would be.
The orca had observed that David was always glancing up or around, jumpy and very quiet if another person or fur talked to him. Gideon couldn't blame the child, especially because of who it was that was the cause of the boy's current situation.
Many times Gideon had resisted the urge to tell David everything. Tell him he knew what the mark on his wrist was and plead to him that he would protect him no matter what. Not to mention he wanted to tell him what he would do to the individuals who had hurt him.

"Sorren just run, please son you need to run." His dad said as Sorren held back tears while he clung to his father. The boy's dad pushed his son away from him and began to lead his fifteen year old son to the back door of their house.
"Dad please... please let me stay... I don't want to go... I want to stay with you. I know that you can protect me. I can help you fight them!" Sorren pleaded. His dad grabbed a bag from the closet and slung it over his son's shoulders.
"Listen to me Sorren, I'm so sorry, but I can't protect you, you need to run, everything you need is in the bag. There's a letter from both me and your mother telling you what to do."
A deafening crash came from the front door and Sorren's dad quickly glanced over his shoulder. "Promise me that you'll stay safe, now trust me and just go. I love you, and so did your mother, never forget that ok. We are proud to have you as a son." The boy's father kissed him on the forehead before pushing his son out the back door and locked it behind him.
_Sorren stood there scared and upset, but he did as he father asked and ran, trying to ignore the yells and shouts from his home. _
_ _
Sorren bolted up in his bed, crying out and breathing heavily. He clutched something under his t-shirt and began to work on getting his breathing under control. Outside it was snowing again. The sun outside slowly rose, bleaching the sky outside with a soft orange glow. Not being affected by the cloud coverage.
He had been in this inn for too long. He wasn't exactly looking forward to going out into the cold. Despite being anxious about going out in public, Sorren needed to get some fresh air and exercise. As long as he went for a short walk. Told Gideon where he was going. Sorren figured he would be safe for at least half an hour.
He spent the morning reading in his room, trying to shake the dream from his memory and just forget about his past. When his watch went off he looked outside the window, glad to see that it wasn't snowing anymore. Briefly he stretched his muscles and stood up, throwing on his thickest jumper and boots he headed out.
Being sure to lock the door behind him he headed to the stairs. Trying to keep his nerves and paranoid thoughts under control and buried.
"Going out finally are you?" Gideon said with a chuckle, watching as the boy came down the stairs and noticing that he was wrapped up in what the orca assumed were his warmest clothes.
"Yeah I am, only for a walk though. I'll be back in about half an hour I should think." Sorren said, returning the laugh.
"I guess that you aren't used to the cold here. Maybe if you got yourself a little bit of fat on you then it would be a little better." Gideon chuckled again, smiling broadly when he saw a little bit of a blush begin to creep over those cheeks. Despite everything, Gideon couldn't help but find the boy attractive and not to mention cute.
"See you in half an hour Gideon." Sorren said as he headed for the door.
"I'll make sure that there is a mug of hot chocolate waiting for you." Gideon stated, his tail swaying slowly behind him.
Sorren stopped. His fingers wrapped around the handle as those words hung in the air. Sighing he turned and gave the orca a genuine smile.
"Thank you Gideon, for everything." The boy said before heading out, not staying long enough to of heard the orca's reply.
Gideon watched him leave. Once he was sure the boy wasn't returning, he grabbed a spare key to room 12 and headed upstairs. He wanted to see if his fears were true. He knew that confronting Sorren wasn't the way to go about it. If he did, Gideon was pretty sure that the boy would just withdraw in on himself and probably decide to leave. Once again he would go on the run alone.
But this time it was different. This time Gideon was sure that he knew what was going on and he could help. He would not allow David to be alone anymore. David was only sixteen and needed help. First the he needed to confirm that his fears were true, those answers would hopefully be in the boy's room.
Sorren walked slowly through the streets. Once again he had his hood up and head hung low. He made sure to keep close to the inn, trying to memorise the route back for when he had had enough of walking. The time he had spent at the inn had been relaxing, despite being on edge as he usually was, and Sorren was grateful for having even that much of a respite. But even still, he needed a walk.
As Sorren walked, his mind had begun to wander. And as his thoughts wandered, Gideon's face popped in a fair few times, causing him to smile softly and his cheeks redden just a little.
Sorren couldn't help but find it strange to have a fondness for the orca, especially with what was going on. Sorren made it a point not to grow attached to anyone. But the orca seemed to be an exception, whenever he was in the room. Sorren couldn't help but feel relaxed and safe.
It was comforting. However his doubts and fears once again began to creep up on him. There was no one he could trust. Not even Gideon. No matter how relaxed he made him feel.
He was alone and that was all there was to it. Sighing, Sorren put his headphones into his ears. The music started and he began to enjoy the fresh, yet cold, air. Not knowing that a few yards behind him, someone was watching and following him closely.

Gideon had looked in nearly every drawer and found nothing useful. The room was surprisingly well kept. He had heard from one of the cleaners earlier that she hadn't needed to do anything in the human's room. She had told him that the room was practically immaculate and all she had to do was just replace the air freshener and that was practically it.
Standing up, Gideon looked around the room and thought carefully to himself. The only place that he hadn't looked yet was in the bedside table. But the ring of the bell on the reception desk stopped him. Cursing under his breath Gideon had no choice but to hope that he could deal with the customer before David came back.

Amber eyes watched the boy closely. He knew that this was the one he had been sent to look for. He could pick up the boys scent on the air as he followed the human.
His alpha would be so proud of him for locating the child. This one had caused them a lot of trouble since day one. But that was all going to change.
Staying as silent as he could the wolf followed the human wherever he went. Being careful that nobody they walked past noticed his stalking of his prey.

Downstairs Gideon found a wolf standing at the reception desk. The tapping of the canine's claws against the wood was irritating to him and his scent was travel worn with sweat and dirt. Taking his place behind the desk Gideon looked at the wolf, "how may I help you sir?"
"I'm looking for someone, his name is Sorren Taylor." The wolf said. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a photo. Gideon had to use all of his will not to react as he found himself looking at a picture of David. It was then that he knew who this wolf was. He knew exactly why he was looking for Sorren. Of course David wasn't the boy's real name. If he was being pursued by a wolf like the one who stood in front of him. He wouldn't use his real name either.
"I'm sorry to say that we have no record of anyone by that name here that I know of. If you want, you can look at the guest log in book." Gideon offered. Just wanting to get the wolf out of here in case Sorren came back a little earlier then he said.
"Thank you" The wolf said as he began to flick through the pages. The wolf didn't even glance up at the orca once. Gideon kept his facial expression as neutral as possible. To the orca it was almost torture to not take revenge on who had hurt those precious to him, and now they were back.
"You won't get your hands on him. I swear to you that you will not get your claws into Sorren again." Gideon swore in his mind.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Sorren clutched at his jacket as the wind began to pick up a little, small flecks of snow beginning to fall onto his cheek. Walking around hadn't been as rewarding as he had originally thought. Most places were shut and Sorren was yet to find a café that was open.
"At least I'm getting some exercise" Sorren said out loud to himself. The fresh air was doing him some good, as was being outside, the cabin fever he had felt creeping up on him was now gone. Yet he was still on edge. The uncomfortable feeling of eyes being on him was on the forefront of his mind.
"Come on, you are being silly. There are no eyes on you." Sorren said. Trying to reassure him self. It wasn't working but he continually reminded him self of that every few seconds mentally.
Checking his watch, Sorren wanted to see how long he had been out. It had barely been fifteen minutes, and already he just wanted to go back to the inn. The promise of a warm mug of hot chocolate and a comfortable sofa was extremely appealing. Not to mention that Sorren wouldn't mind just having a nice chat with Gideon. Yet at the same time he didn't want to distract the orca from his work.
Sighing to himself he reached into his pocket and pulled out his I-pod, shuffling through the songs till he found the one he wanted. A smile spreading across his face as the soft and slow melody began to play into his ears. But still he was unable to resist looking behind him every few seconds, just to reassure himself that he wasn't being followed.

Watching the human began to annoy the wolf. It was so demeaning to him to be following this boy when he could easily just subdue him here and now. But he had orders from his alpha to just observe and follow. Taylen sneezed when a snowflake flew up his sensitive nose. This cold weather and snow were playing havoc with his nose.
A vibration in his pocket drew his attention away from his prey, "Yes my alpha? What do you need?" Taylen answered respectfully.
"Have you found any traces of the one we are looking for?" The gruff voice asked a little impatiently.
"Yes my alpha. In fact I'm following him now. He doesn't know that I'm following him as we speak." There was some silence on the other end of the phone, but soon that was broken by a soft chuckle.
"Good work Taylen. Keep an eye on the boy and let me know where he is staying. I am at one of the local inns but I haven't found his name in the guest log book and no one recognises him." Taylen was sure he could hear the cogs in his alpha's mind going round as he thought of a plan of attack.
"What would you like me to do Alpha?" Taylen asked hoping to be given the go ahead to capture the boy.
"For the moment follow him. You are not to loose sight of him and to find out where he is staying. Only then can we re-acquire the boy." The alpha ordered.
"Of course sir, I promise that I will not lose him." With a small growl of acknowledgement from his Alpha, Taylen hung up the found and returned his attention to the boy. But he was gone! The wolf ran to the spot he had seen the boy standing last, closing his eyes he tried to pick up the boys scent.
The scent of traffic and the general grime of the town were making the human's scent become scattered and nearly unreadable. He could pick it up every now and then but was then immediately overpowered by the scent of a car, a trashcan or something else that happened to be around. Taylen growled deeply. He had lost the boy, and only seconds after promising his alpha that he wouldn't.
"Oh shit... now what do I do?"

Gideon was a mass of turbulent and conflicting emotions. Trying to keep a straight and neutral expression was almost impossible. He had just listened to one side of a phone call between the wolf and somebody who obviously worked for him. But what that phone call had told the orca was that they had found Sorren.
"Thank you for allowing me to look through your log book. I'm sorry if I caused you any inconvenience." The wolf said as he began to do up his coat.
"No problem at all Sir. I am just sorry I wasn't any more help to you. If there is anything I can do to help just let me know." Gideon said through gritted teeth while trying to sound as sincere as he could.
"I'll leave a copy of the boy's photo. If you see him please call the number on the back. His family are really worried about his safety." The wolf responded with little to no emotion. He took out a piece of paper and began to scribble down a number.
"Of course, I'll do what I can. Please have a good day, and again, I'm sorry for not being of any help to you." The wolf simply nodded his head and walked out the front door, leaving behind only a few flecks of snow on the carpet.
The orca stood there silently for a few seconds. Gideon tried to concentrate his thoughts on what he was to do next. His hands instinctively clenched into fists as thoughts of the wolf entered his mind, crumpling the piece of paper that he held in one of them.
"What the hell am I going to do?" Gideon said out loud to himself.
He knew that his first priority was to find Sorren as fast as possible, but he had no way of getting in touch with the boy. The orca knew that he had a mobile on him, but that was no use to him as he didn't know the boy's number.
The sound of the office phone ringing brought the orca out of his thoughts, sighing he went to answer it.
"Hello, The Snow Fox inn. How may help?"
"Gideon, is that you?" A small voice said on the other end of the line.
"David, David is that you?" The orca said in a panicked voice.
"Yeah it's me. Listen I need your help. I've gotten a little lost and was wondering if you could direct me back to the inn?" Sorren said in a quiet voice.
Gideon laughed softly, but was immediate filled with thoughts that hadn't only just begun to dawn on him. Sorren was some place he didn't know. From what the wolf had said on the phone there was obviously someone watching him.
"David, I know practically every single person in town, I want you to go to the nearest house and knock on their door. Ask them if you can stay with them and get them to call me."
There was a brief pause on the other end before Sorren's small voice replied,
"Ok Gideon. Thank you." With that Sorren hung up and Gideon sat down. Waiting patiently for a call that would let him collect the boy and bring him back safely.

Sorren hung up and put his phone back inside his jacket pocket. The boy couldn't help but notice the orca's strange tone of voice. Sighing he got up from the bench he was sitting on and walked across the street. Doing as he had been told by the orca, despite not fully trusting Gideon.
Just as he was about to knock on the door, there was a sound behind him and a sharp pain exploded from the back of his neck. His vision was suddenly blurred and he fell to his knees. An arm reached out and wrapped around his waist. There was a voice. A voice he recognised. But darkness began to creep at the edge of his vision.
"You thought you could escape, but you can't escape boy. Not from us, you are ours now and you won't get away again." A deep voice growled into his ear.
The last thought that ran through Sorren's head wasn't of how they had found him. Not of what was going to happen to him. It was of Gideon. The fact that he knew he wouldn't see the orca again. Then he was swallowed up by the darkness as he fell into unconsciousness.

Hours later Gideon got a phone call. The orca had waited patiently for the call to collect the boy. That call never came. As when he answered the phone he heard a voice that cut deeply into the orca's heart.
"G...Gideon... Its David... listen, I.... I'm sorry but I won't be coming back to the inn. My family turned up. I'm... I'm going home. Please forgive me for not saying goodbye in person."
"D...David... Listen to me. I know the truth. I saw the mark on your wrist. I'm going to find you. You hear me? I'm going to find you and I'm going to punish those who dare hurt you. I'm going to save you... Sorren."
There was a pause on the other end of the phone. The orca's heart splintering as he listened to Sorren break down into tears. That sound echoed deeply in the orca's mind and heart. His fists clenched in rage and determination.
"Please.... Please Gideon. Don't do anything..... jus..." There was a sound of the phone changing hands and a deeper voice spoke.
"This boy is ours. Don't do anything stupid. We have no quarrel with you so just go about your life and forget about him." The voice said with authority.
"Not a chance. You have already taken those who mean something to me. I will NOT allow you to destroy that boy's life!" Gideon yelled out.
There was another pause on the other end. The only sound that Gideon could make out was Sorren's crying.
"Goodbye Gideon. You won't get your hands on our property." The voice said before the phone went dead. Gideon stood there for a few minutes. His fists shaking with rage as he threw the phone across the room and yelled out at the top of his voice.
"I'm coming Sorren. I swear to you that I'll get you back." Gideon vowed as he grabbed his jacket and ran out of the front door.

Sorren sat in the chair he was tied to. His head hung low as he cried. Tears were streaming down his face as he heard foot steps slowly circling around him. Despite knowing who it was out there, his captors had blindfolded him.
"Do you really think he'll come for you boy?" The voice snarled with amusement.
"So you really think that you'll be safe this time? We have already called into our boss and he'll be here in a few days. Face it. You have run for the last time." The voice said as a fist connected to the boys face. Sorren cried out in pain. The coppery taste of his own blood entered his mouth.
"P....please... don't hurt him." Sorren pleaded. More tears streaming down his cheeks.
"I don't think so. You need to be taught a lesson. You need to be taught what happens when you disobey us." The voice snarled as another hit was made to the boy's face. Sorren cried out in pain again. Spitting out some blood he felt the left side of his face begin to throb in time with his heartbeat.
"I'll leave you to think over how you brought your friends fate unto him. Sleep well boy. Don't let the bed bugs bite." The voice laughed out with amusement as Sorren heard a door open only to be slammed shut.
Blindfolded, bleeding and broken Sorren just sat there crying, wishing with every fibre of his being that Gideon was going to come and get him. But what little hope he had of escaping from those who now had him had gone. It was all over. The only person who had shown him kindness was going to get hurt because of him.
"Please.... Anyone... help me." He whispered between sobs, praying out for anyone to hear and answer his cries.
To Be Continued.........
