The world is full of people, and each of those people has their own problems. For some of us it's our home life, for others it's the people around us. For others still, life's just a bitch. How we deal with those problems tends to define who we are and what kind of person we will be as we grow. It also may determine how a person uses power, or more accurately how power uses them. Who am I to know all this, and what does it have to do with me, you might be asking. My name is Jason Wolf, and I'm one of three people who is able to Play God. That probably sounds interesting or cool to you, but in all honesty, it's nothing of the sort. It's extremely dangerous, and it shows what kind of person you truly are when you look at your work. However with that said, I guess I should really start this story from the beginning.
It all started my freshman year. I'd just moved into town and really didn't have any friends. It didn't help that despite being tall and muscular I hated most of the sports my school offered as extra curricular activities. That and the fact that my dad had bought out one of the local companies, which meant he'd cost a lot of people there jobs, meant that it was going to be even harder to try and make friends. Then there was the fact that I had problems with people who thought they were better than me when they knew nothing about me. So I knew my life was going to be hell in all honesty but, since I was ready for it, that's how things end up when you're the new guy.
I walked into the school on my first day with my laptop in my bag and my last school's baseball cap on my head. The moment I walked through the door I was run into by a female dragon. She had blue scales with, red spines down her back and white wings. I could instantly tell she was a half dragon because of the simple fact that she was a lot slimmer than most dragons, not quite as tall as a full dragon and her facial features didn't end in a muzzle. I blinked and saw that she had dropped her books, which she must have been carrying in her arms. I slowly bent down and helped her pick them up then said "Sorry, I didn't mean to run into you. I just wasn't paying attention because it's my first day and all." She nodded quickly and took her books with a soft thank you then ran off. I watched her go and thought "Well smooth move Ex-lax. You could have made a worse first impression, but I'm not sure how."
I continued walking until I found my locker then put my hat and sunglasses inside before walking to the office to get my schedule. It was already the second semester so I didn't have too much to worry about as far as getting adjusted. I mean everyone else in school knew each other, but at least I didn't have to suddenly just appear in the middle of classes that had been going on for most of the year and disrupt them. About halfway to the office, or at least where I thought the office was, I ran into a large bull who was obviously the local quarterback. Because of my height we ended up head butting each other and he fell on his ass while I rubbed my head. I glanced at him and said "Sorry about that I wasn't paying attention to where I was going. I'm sort of new here and was trying to remember where exactly the office was." He stood up slowly about to chew me out like he would anyone smaller than me, then suddenly sized me up.
I wasn't too surprised; I'm about 6 foot even, not counting my ears. That combined with my build meant that I looked like someone who could hold his own in a fight. What most people didn't know was, that I don't like fighting. However despite that I could hold my own if someone else started a fight, which was why I'd nearly been expelled from my last school. The bull seemed to realize that and said "So you're new here, huh. Well I'm Robert Johnson, and I'm the local quarterback. If you have any questions just ask me." I thought "Bingo my first assumption was right on the money." Robert couldn't seem to read my thoughts so I said "You mind telling me where the office is?" He nodded and said "Down this hall, take a left turn then follow that hall and take a right. You should be right outside the main office." I nodded in thanks and followed his instruction with a wave over my shoulder. I ended up at the office sooner than I would have if I'd gone the way I'd originally intended.
I walked in and the secretary, an old nanny goat who looked like she enjoyed food, handed me my schedule. I took it and started out, when I saw a beautiful panther talking to the school's nurse. I shook my head deciding not to push my luck anymore today, and walked to first period wishing I had my shades. When I walked into my class which was creative arts, I blinked to see both the dragon girl, who was sitting at her desk working on her laptop, and the panther, who must have taken a different route to get to class than me. I shook my head and mumbled "The only class where I get to write and I end up with the girl I made the worst possible first impression on." I set my bag down at a desk at the back of the room then walked over and gently tapped the dragon girl on the shoulder.
She quickly closed her laptop and turned around, then stopped with her jaw sort of slack as her eyes moved up from my navel to my muzzle. I smiled politely and said "Hi I'm the jerk who ran into you this morning first thing. I just wanted to apologize and introduce myself. My name's Jason Wolf, and could you please tell me who you are?"
She smiled shyly and said "Hi I'm Jessie Iranell. I'm the local computer geek, not many people in school like me because of the fact my dad's a human and my mom is a dragoness. They also think I'm weird because I prefer to work with computers than people or sports." I smiled slightly and said "I personally think programmers are pretty cool. I used to know a few keystrokes, but over time I forgot since we lived in the country and I spent more time outside. Maybe you can show me how to start again sometime." She nodded and opened her computer then went back to work. I walked back to my desk and pulled out my laptop then started on a half-finished story I'd had writer's block on for a while.
I sighed as I hit yet another wall in my story and saved then put my computer away as the bell rang and the teacher walked in. I blinked noticing it was just the three of us and the teacher then sighed and mumbled "Please don't tell me I took the one class that virtually no one wants." My ears twitched slightly at the thought that I'd taken yet another class at another school that everyone was laughed at because of.
The teacher heard me and laughed then said "No; I'm just very selective about the students I allow into my class. You're classmates, and yourself, are all known for your creativity. I decided that only the most intelligent and most creative would be my pupils. The principal agreed because he knows that if this works out, our school will become one of the most renown in the country. Hopefully, my estimates and expectations of you guys aren't too high." I raised an eyebrow and said "So, what exactly are you saying sir?" He smiled and said "This is a competition class. I'll expect the best work you guys can produce. Then from there we'll all work on expanding it into something the entire country will know who you are. "
I blinked and the pantheress said "What do you expect of us this year Mr. Noranta?" He smiled at her and said "Well Kiki, this year I want you guys to try and make your art come to life. Also before you comment Mr. Wolf, yes your stories are art. I read a few of them, and I think you could make them even better if you change the story to a more realistic setting." I blinked and nodded then slid down in my seat as he turned to Jesse and said "What do you have to start this semester off with Ms. Iranell?" Jesse pressed a key then turned her laptop to him and said "I programmed my own virtual world with living, breathing, and thinking virtual characters. I wrote it so the program can evolve on it's own, but I put an override all my own in it."
Mr. Noranta studied her work then smiled and said "Well that is impressive. It's also very artistic since you made all of the buildings and what not so beautiful. I can't wait to see what you can do with a little more refinement." She blushed bright pink then turned her laptop back toward her and got to work on changing her program again. I stared at her surprised. Mr. Noranta coughed and I looked at him questioningly. He raised an eyebrow and said "Can I see you're story?" I nodded and pulled out my laptop then handed it to him. He turned it on and started cycling through my stories then said "If you were to focus on a more realistic type of story, I think you'd be unable to be beaten."
I stared at him surprised and he explained "You're work is more realistic than your characters, causing the story to fall apart. You put super powerful people in ordinary situations, that anyone could solve if they used their minds. Why don't you try splitting these characters into more, supernatural stories, and putting normal anthro and human characters in these stories?" I thought about that for a while then nodded and got to work completely changing everything up.
Before the three of us knew it the bell rang and we ended up going to our next classes. Kiki was in my next class, which was math, and was way to easy. Instead of paying attention I sat and read the latest book in a series by one of my favorite authors. The teacher suddenly called my name and I studied the board then answered her question. She blinked and I put my book away then waited to see what happened next. She put up three more problems, and I solved all of them muttering about annoying people not getting that math is one of my strong points.
Finally the bell rang and I ran to third period. When I got there I grabbed a seat at the back of the room and pulled out my English book. Suddenly Jessie sat down next to me and said softly "Mind if I stay by you? You're one of the only guys in school who's name I actually know." I nodded and smiled at her then leaned back in my chair and waited for class to start. She smiled at me then pulled out her laptop and started working on her program again. I watched her for a few minutes, then pulled out my laptop and started on a new story. As it progressed I slowly changed the characters to reflect real people I'd met throughout my life. I didn't even realize I was doing it until the bell rang, and I heard everyone talking as the teacher walked in. I saved my work and put my laptop away as the teacher whistled to get everyone's attention.
I covered my ears as soon as my laptop was away, and most of the others with any canine in them did the same. The others kind of laughed although a few equines snorted, and one filly even whinnied. She covered her mouth and said softly "Excuse me, that's a problem passed down because of my family's distant cousins." The teacher nodded slowly in acceptance of her apology then asked "Do I have everyone's attention now?" Everyone nodded and she said "Good. I may be human, but that is not a reason for you to think you can disobey me." My tail started wagging, my respect of this teacher instantly going up.
She looked around the room then said "We have a few new students, but since it's not my custom to push anyone to introduce themselves, I'll let you meet them on your own time. Today we'll start on Shakespeare's a midsummer's nights dream. Those of you, who don't wish to read it, may instead take a book from my reading list and do a full report on it." A lot of people moaned at both the play and the alternative.
I just smiled and glanced at Jesse who said "I'd personally have preferred something like Beowulf, but I guess Shakespeare is all right." I nodded in agreement then leaned back and suddenly the teacher said "Mr. Wolf if you don't sit in that chair properly I'll have you tell the entire class about not only a Midsummer's Nights Dream, but also Macbeth, and several other plays by our esteemed playwright." I put my chair down and muttered under my breath "Man she is one scary human. I'd swear if she had the chance she'd be putting shock collars on us, and teaching us how to do tricks." A rabbit girl sitting a few seats up laughed softly at what I said, and Jesse smiled slightly trying to keep a straight face. I glanced at her and said "What do you have next?" She shrugged and said "Science." I grinned and said "Me too; do you mind showing me the way there?" She nodded and I closed my eyes listening to the teacher explain her opinion of Shakespeare's work.
The rest of the class went by quickly with the teacher introducing herself as Ms. Johnson, and explaining why we'd be studying what we would. However as class drew to a close she called me up and said "Mr. Wolf I'd like to see some of your work if you don't mind." I shook my head and said "Not at all." She held out her hand and I quickly placed a few of my short stories, which I'd printed out, into her hands. She glanced over them then said "I'll tell you my thoughts tomorrow." I nodded quickly and said thanks then went and grabbed my bag before walking over to Jesse. She smiled at me and said "Looks like Ms. Johnson is actually interested in your work."
I nodded and said "Yeah; I'm sorta surprised by that. Most people tend to ignore my work rather than asking to see it. I guess she's really curious about it." Jesse nodded then suddenly said "Hey you want to hang out with me and a few friends at lunch?" I nodded and the two of us walked to Fourth period discussing where we should go for lunch. Jesse wanted to go to a sushi place, but I was all for the local steak house. Finally we settled on a burger joint, which she said she'd tell her friends to join us at during next period. As soon as we got in the room a young fox with purple stripes in his mostly white hair ran over to Jesse and said "Hey Jess! I was wondering if we're still all going to lunch, and if you and I still were on for the study time tonight, oh and Marie wants to know if you are up to go with her to the football game on Friday."
Jesse waited for him to finish then said "Brad you need to calm down. To answer your first question, yes we're all going to lunch. Next, yes the two of us are going to study together tonight like I promised. Third, you can tell Marie that yes we're going to the football game." Brad blinked and stared at her his mouth working as if he was talking, but unable to. He stretched then suddenly grabbed her hand and led her to a desk and sat next to her. I blinked a few times surprised then shrugged and grabbed a seat at the back of the class wondering who would be at the lunch with Jessie and me. After a few minutes, a large eagle sat down next to me and said "Morning. I'm Davis, and you are?" I held out my hand and said "Jason. Nice to meet you. What's up?"
Davis grinned and grasped my hand with a talon then said "Not much, I just heard you were an author and was wondering if you'd join the journalism club. We're in need of a few reporters, and if you prove really well, you could be our editor. Also since you already know Jesse, who does layout, I have a feeling you'll get along with most of the journalism crew. She's sorta self conscious, where as most of us are a bit more out going. Our local sports watcher Jamie, who happens to be a cheerleader, is in this class so you'll get to meet her in a bit."
I nodded and said "So how do I join?" Davis blinked surprised then said "Well if you want to join I'll talk to professor Lonich and he'll ask to see your work. If he likes your stuff, he'll probably give you a position and assign you a job partner. Mine is Frederica, she's a foreign exchange student. You'll probably meet her if you join the group and based on how calm you are, the two of you will probably get along really well." I nodded and closed my eyes waiting for the teacher to arrive and wondering what the journalism club was going to be like. Suddenly I heard someone say "Hey Davis, who's the cutie?"
I opened one eye and Davis said "This is Jason. He's thinking about joining the journalism club as a reporter, or taking my job as editor so I can work on the layouts." The voice had come from a young raccoon girl wearing a cheerleading uniform and a pair of sun glasses. I blinked and she said "Well tell him it's nice to meet him, and I'm glad he's going to join the crew."
I grinned and said "Nice to meet you to Jamie, I'm Jason Wolf. As you can probably see I'm a hybrid like Jesse, but unlike her my dad was a wolf. I hope we can get to become good friends as the year goes on, but only time will be able to tell." She stared at me surprised then smiled and said "I like your attitude Mr. Wolf." She walked to her seat after waving at Davis then sat down and pulled out a magazine. I stared after her and muttered "Well she's definitely different from most of the cheerleaders at my old schools."
Jesse glanced over as Jamie was walking away and looked at me questioningly. I smiled at her then stretched and leaned back in my chair. The teacher walked in and said "Welcome to mating 101. This class is a class on how to properly find a mate, how to convince said mate you're interested, and about the physiology of different genders and how they work." I glanced at Jesse and mouthed "A fucking sex class?" She shrugged and mouthed back "Most people take it because it's required. It doubles as a health class." I glanced at Jamie who just shrugged and focused on her work.
I listened to the teacher for a while then closed my eyes thinking about why the hell a school would have this type of class. Suddenly the teacher said "Mr. Wolf will you please pay attention to what's going on. If not I'll be forced to ask you to explain to the class the difference between a human and canid phallus, since your own should reflect a small amount of each." I blinked and muttered "I don't know if you would call it a little bit, but whatever floats your boat maa'm." She didn't hear what I said so she asked "Well Mr. Wolf, what is your answer?" I shrugged and opened my eyes then said "I'm paying attention maa'm, it just doesn't seem that way because I close my eyes when thinking about something deeply, alright?" She slowly nodded completely surprised by what I said.
After a while the bell rang and everyone rushed out to head to lunch. I walked out to my car and lit a cigarette, thinking I was lucky the doctors seemed to think it didn't really effect my lungs. I sighed and closed my eyes as I got behind the wheel thinking "Why the hell do I have to be such a flippant ass? I could have just said I understood what the damn teacher asked. Guess it was because of Jesse and Jamie." I sighed cursing myself for being such a fool just because women were around, then opened my eyes and reached forward to start my car's engine. A hand grabbed my arm as I touched the key and someone said "You and I need to have a little talk, mutant." I sighed and said softly "There are very few things you can do to piss me off, and calling me mutant is at the top of that list."
I slowly turned to face the owner of the arm only to find myself looking up at a seven foot tall dragon with blood red markings and black scales. I sighed and opened the car door then got out and looked up into his eyes. He smiled darkly and said "We have to talk about what you've been doing to the social order, mutant." I growled and said "What exactly is that?" He smirked and said "First you catch Kiki's attention, then Jesse, then Jamie. Jesse is a nerd who needs to stay toward the bottom of the later, the other two need to stay at the top. You appearing made them think they can interact just because they have classes and clubs together." I raised an eyebrow then slowly pried his hand off my arm and twisted it around his back. He glanced at me over his shoulder with a smirk and I said softly "1. You don't own this school. 2. The girls can do whatever the fuck they want. 3. If you insult me again, I'm breaking your damn arm, dragon or no."
He glanced at me over his shoulder and smirked then said "Well if you think you can do it little bitch, prove you can. However if I kick your ass you have to submit to me in front of the whole school, and prove your not as big and bad as your reputation says." I sighed and said "That's what this is really about, a hybrid having a reputation. Why does everyone assume I want to appear stronger than I am. I just defended friends and protected myself."
As usual with idiots like him, he ignored what I said and tried pulling his arm free preparing to turn and take my head off with one punch. I held onto his arm and turned with him then pulled up till I dislocated his shoulder and let go. He yelled out in pain and turned to punch me again I grabbed his arm and bent it straight back then looked him in the eyes and said "I'm no one's bitch." as the bone snapped. He yelled out and inhaled deeply his ignus iaculator, which was Latin for fire thrower, starting to catch then breathed a thick stream of black fire at me. I was moving as soon as he inhaled so he just got the innocent bystanders behind me. I growled and punched him in the side causing him to cough and shut off his flame before it injured anyone to strongly. He stared at me as he coughed and I pulled back my hand then punched him in the face.
I heard a deep crack and knew I'd injured his jaw, then yelped as the pain sensors in my hand went nuts from re-breaking the old break across my knuckles I sighed softly and mumbled "Dad is so going to kill me for letting my temper run away with me." I noticed that the dragon was knocked out and kicked him in the head, then turned to one of his buddies and said "Tell him if he really wants to settle this in a full out fight, not me using quick punches, to meet me in the park at ten o' clock the night he comes back to school." I got in my car and carefully shut it with my left hand then glanced at my right, which I had just re-broken the knuckles of, and slowly turned the ignition causing the bones to rub against each other.
I ignored the pain and did it again, this time pressing the clutch, and the engine roared to life causing everyone to jump back. I smiled to myself and shifted straight to third gear then spun the tires and shot out of the student parking lot, leaving everyone in smoke filled air that smelled like burnt rubber. I quickly drove to the local burger joint which was known as "Burger world" and wondered about the cliché ness of it. I saw Jesse standing out front with Jamie, who had a worried look on her face. I skidded to a stop next to the two of them with the car in a parking spot perfectly. I yawned, shifting back down to first gear, rolled down my windows, which didn't let anyone see inside because they were made of a special black glass, and said "Hey girls, sorry I'm late. Is everyone else inside?" They nodded and I said "Great because I'm starving, and I'll explain everything when I get inside and have made my order."
They nodded and slowly turned around then walked inside. I watched them go then carefully shut off the ignition and got out of the car silently cursing that asshole dragon. I walked into the burger palace after opening the with my left hand. It was really inconvenient, but I'd learned a long time ago that showing weakness in a community run by people who were animalistic in nature was not wise. I let the door swing shut behind me then walked up to the counter and ordered a large double cheese burger, a large cola, and two large orders of fries. I glanced around the room until I saw Jesse, Jamie, and others then walked over and sat down. Jesse said "Let me introduce everyone, then you can tell us about the reason you're late."
I blinked and said "Ok." She smiled and said "You already know Jamie, Davis, and myself. However you've only had a cursory interaction with Brad, then there's Luna, Nicole, Dex, Nate, and Ron. A few people who decided to join us that aren't in journalism are Richard, Ken, Kita, and her sister Kiki." She pointed at each person as she said their name and I silently studied them. Jamie hadn't changed from this morning which meant she was still in her cheerleading outfit showing off her curvaceous figure and countering her natural coloring. She'd taken off the sunglasses showing that instead of the usual black, she had a white mask around her eyes which was rare for raccoons. Jesse was the same as when we'd first met, although she'd swapped the glasses she'd been wearing in first period for a pair of contacts.
I smiled at her and she just looked down at her food. Then I glanced at Davis and saw he'd changed into a t shirt and shorts instead of the long sleeve shirt and jeans he'd been wearing this morning. I saw that his feathers were a light golden brown making him a golden eagle, and noticed his talons were clipped so he could manage working with them. I grinned at him and he grinned back then I asked "Where's Frederica?" He shrugged and said "She said she had some stuff to do at school, and to go ahead. She'll probably be in the editing room when we go talk to the professor this afternoon." I nodded and turned to Brad who smiled big and said "Hi nice to meet you. All sorts of rumors are going around school. Are you really a gangster? Is your dad really as cruel to his employees as everyone says? Did you really get expelled six times causing your family to move here when you're dad bought everyone out?"
I blinked and Jesse said "Brad calm down and talk slower. I don' think Jason caught all of that." He nodded and slowly bit back the next few questions he was going to ask me. I took a breath and said "No I'm not a gangster, but a few of my friends were. No my dad isn't cruel to his employees, and actually he's giving everyone who's been with the company at least five years a ten dollar raise. Yes I was expelled six times, but it's not why we moved here when dad took over. He planned on turning this into his new seat of operations anyway. Luckily for me I didn't get expelled until the year was over, which meant I just wasn't allowed back to my old school."
Everyone else stared at me after I said all that, then I turned and studied Luna and Nichole who were sitting next to each other. Luna was a unicorn, but instead of the tradition white she was pure black. Her horn was crimson instead of silver and she watched me carefully. Nicole on the other hand was a white tiger with startling blue eyes that seemed to read my every thought. They were both wearing tank tops and shorts over sports bras which meant they'd just gotten out of some sort of athletic class. Suddenly Luna said "You're future is paved with both pain and joy as you take that which even the gods fear. Of the three you'll have to be the voice of reason or all is lost." I stared at her confused and she just smiled at me revealing that her canines were sharp, which was really odd for a unicorn since they were only supposed to eat grasses and leaves.
I shivered and turned to look at Dex who was a large Coyote with pitch black fur and silver eyes. He just nodded to me without saying anything and leaned back the ripped sleeves on his shirt showing his muscles. Next I turned to Nate who smiled at me as if to say 'ignore his rudeness'. He was a slightly portly badger with blue and black fur instead of the usual black and white. I could tell the blue was more die than natural coloring, but I didn't comment on it.
Finally I turned to Ron who was the last of the journalists, and probably the only other one I'd be working with. He was a large stallion with a pure black mane which was a contrast to his pure white fur. his tail was also black and his eyes were dark green. He smiled at me and said "Welcome to the team. A few of the guys stayed at the school to work, but this is most of us." I nodded and turned to Jamie's other friends with a studious look. Ken was a large bull with a ring through his nose and dark brown fur. His horns were shaved down and he seemed to always be looking off in the distance. I slowly took my eyes off him and looked at Kita and Kiki. I could tell right off that they were twins, the only real differences being that Kita had a birthmark shaped like fire on her left cheek and their eyes. Kita's eyes were a deep auburn and her sisters were a deep emerald green.
I'd studied everyone for what felt like an hour, but was only a few minutes and suddenly my order was called. I walked up and grabbed it then went back and sat next to Davis. The others were talking about how the football team would do on Friday so I just listened while I ate. Suddenly they realized I was back and Jesse said "Ok, why were you late?" I shrugged and said "I was accosted by a huge dragon before I could leave. We got into a fight over him calling me a bitch and saying that people shouldn't interact outside their groups. I got pissed and cracked his jaw, as well as beating him in the side, stomach, and dislocating his shoulder." The others stared at me then Jesse asked "Did he manage to hurt you?" I shook my head and my hand throbbed as if to curse me for lying.
I yawned and said "I think he's at the hospital, he had Black scale with blood red markings if that helps anything." Davis burst out laughing and said "You took out our star linebacker. Nice. I don't think the team is going to like you after that." Ken shrugged and said "Jordan was an ass anyway. I guess I'll be filling in for him so thanks Jason." I nodded and finished my food then tossed my trash away. The others all got up and we started talking about how the rest of the day was going to go as we headed for our vehicles. I climbed into my car and Luna walked over as I reached for the ignition. I glanced at her and she said "Mind if I catch a ride with you?" I nodded and unlocked the doors then closed my eyes relaxing.
She climbed in and shut the door then said "How long has your hand been broken?" I glanced at her and said what do you mean?" as I started the car and rolled up the windows. She reached over and grabbed my hand then said "It looks like six or seven breaks in the same areas over time. What happened?" I shrugged and said "I broke it in every fight. It's kind of hard not to when your punching Dragons, Bulls, and Oxen in the face." She raised an eyebrow and said "No equines, I'm amazed. Most of us have a problem with hybrids. I don't, but that's because they consider me an outcast even among unicorns." I raised an eyebrow and she said "You'll understand in the future, for now just know my appearance wasn't an accident."
I nodded and drove back to the high school with my left hand while Luna sat there rubbing my right. I didn't know what she was doing to me, but whatever it was caused the pain to go away. When I parked the car I stared at her amazed then unlocked the doors and we both got out. We went our separate ways without another word, but all I could think was "What the hell did she do to my hand? It hasn't felt this good since before I broke it the first time. I mean drinking milk and what not helped, but nothing made the pain go away quite like Luna's touch. Maybe I can convince her to work on my bad shoulder, and it'll stop popping all the time." I ended up running into someone and knocking them over. I quickly picked them back up to their feet and apologized then studied them to make sure I hadn't hurt them.
It was a young rabbit who looked kind of harried. (Author note: No pun intended, didn't even notice that until it was written.) His ears were laid flat back, he was sweating, and his eyes were kind of wide. If I didn't know better I'd have thought he was being hunted or going through drug withdrawal. I studied him and asked "You alright dude? I mean I didn't hurt you or anything, did I?" He shook his head and said softly "No, but you sort of cut my time frame down. I don't think I'll make it in time, which means that big bully of a jackal is going to beat me up again." I sighed and said "Let's go meet this Jackal of yours and I'll give him a piece of my mind. I'm Jason, and you are?"
He stared at me surprised then blinked and said softly "My name is Michael. Why would you help a nerd like me, I mean you're ripped so you have to be a jock." I blinked and said "Not really, I just learned people don't mess with guys who look tough. I'm actually normally a pacifist, but people always end up pushing me past my limits for some reason." Michael stared at me then said "You're joking, right?" I shook my head and he said "Well then I guess you can help." He led me through several different corridors and I wondered what my teacher would say when I ended up at class late since it was all the way on the other end of the building. I blinked as Michael suddenly stopped and a gruff voice said "You bring my homework and my money, fucking cunt boi?"
Michael breathed deeply then said "No. I brought my new friend along to help me get out from under your thumb once and for all Jackson. First you beat me up all the time, then you make me suck you off, and now your making me pay you so you don't tell anyone. That's not right, damn it!" I sighed and thought "Here we go again Jason. Sticking your damn foot in your mouth and ending up becoming a vigilante yet again. I guess it's because this kid reminds you so much of Richie. Well you gave the kid the confidence to start this, so you'd best finish it." Jackson smiled darkly and said "Well Bunny boy, when I wipe the floor with this hybrid puke, I'm going to finish taking your dignity. I'll start by taking your ass then making you crawl through the school on your hands and knees naked as the day you were born and begging to suck off any guy you meet."
Michael swallowed briefly then looked at me and said "Think you can kick his ass?" I nodded and said softly "Yeah, but afterward I have the damn feeling I'm going to make even more enemies. He's a fucking track runner by his uniform, so between them and the football team I'm in so much shit." I stretched softly and said "I guess it's time to go with my favorite Latin saying which is 'adflicto affligo adulescnes' or to give pain to a young man. So let's get this over with." Jackson nodded and the two of us rushed at each other without another word.
Jackson slammed his fist into my stomach as mine slammed into his face knocking us both back. I coughed up a thin stream of spit while he just rushed forward and kicked me in the jaw. I fell back and kicked out, getting him in the stomach due to his forward momentum. I let me leg bend with him then lashed out sending him flying back down the hall. I slowly climbed to my feet and wiped my mouth off, wondering if he'd broken any of my ribs since it was still hard to breath. He slowly climbed to his feet and growled at me. Then he dropped to all fours and rushed at me like a feral. I instinctively kicked out hitting him in the jaw and flipping him over, then I stepped down on his groin until his whines were so high pitched only other canines could probably discern them.
As his whines started to die down I uncovered my ears and got off his groin then kicked him in the side hard. I glanced at Michael then kicked him one more time and bent down to whisper in his ear. He glanced at me and I said softly "If I ever hear you're tormenting people who are weaker than you again, especially using what I just stepped on, I'm going to get a friend to neuter you. I'm also going to break your leg and send you to the hospital. As is you can just go see the nurse, because I held back instead of treating you like I would a dragon or bull."
I turned to Michael to tell him everything should be ok and he rushed over then kissed me on the lips. I stared him in the eyes as he backed up and said "Sorry overcome with emotion." before running off. I stared after him and wiped my mouth off then ran to class leaving Jackson to lie in a pool of slowly spreading urine. I sighed as I slid into my seat just before the bell and heard Luna who was next to me say "Why do you smell like jackal piss?" I quickly explained then shut my mouth as the bell rang and the teacher walked in.
She studied us and said "Sorry students, but first aid will have to wait. I got a call to go to the office because a student was rather harshly beaten. If any of you need me, please come to the office." We all nodded and watched her go then Luna grabbed my hand and said "More fighting, already?" I shrugged and said "It seems like that's my only talent anymore." She laughed at that and glanced at my ribs then said "Bruised not broken, I'll let you live with them to remind you why you shouldn't fight, or at least should have me around. Now if you don't mind, how about after school you and I talk." I slowly nodded and she said "Good. You'll be the first to learn the truth." Then got up and walked off. I stared after her wondering what she meant and shivered at the implications. For some reason Luna gave me very bad vibes. I sighed and followed her out then went to check on my mustang since it was all I had to do during my off periods. Next period was shop, which I was looking forward to.
I got out to my mustang and popped open the hood then started checking on the modifications to my engine. Dad would have called them illegal, but I was just using his people's research for myself. It wasn't like I told anyone how my engine worked, and I'd modified his original idea to where you couldn't even see it anymore. I sighed and walked to my trunk then grabbed a bottle of coolant I'd snagged from Dad's personal lab and inserted it into the cooler to replace the empty cylinder. I shoved the empty into my trunk, where it would probably sit until I could refill it. As I walked back to check on my engine and see what else needed to be changed someone said "Well it looks like you have a pretty nifty toy there, you build it?" I kept walking until I got to the engine then shut the hood and turned around.
Standing there was an vixen of the arctic fox persuasion who seemed to be disappointed that I'd put down my hood. I sighed and she said "Hi I'm Kitsu. It's short for Kitsunare of the Kintana family. Ever hear of us?" I nodded and said "Only competition for my old man's business so he's trying to set up a deal where the two companies work together. So what exactly do you want, miss Kintana?" She raised an eyebrow and said "I just came to see if this was the mysterious mustang everyone on the street racing circuit was so worried about. I saw the color, the windows, and the tires, but I had to look for the two logos that set it apart. One was a GS and the other was a simple silver fox sitting above the mustang. What's the fox symbol for?"
I ran a hand over the symbol and said softly "It's to remind me of my mom. My dad won't say much about her other than that when I was younger she either left or was forced to leave. He isn't sure which, and I'm not going to try and make him decide on one. After mom left the two of us grew a bit more distant because he sank himself into his work, and I sank into my stories." She studied me and said "That's why you're a hybrid. You have a mix of lupine and vulpine blood. Any special traits?" I pointed at my tail which was actually a foxes tail, only different from there's in the fact it was black with a red tip instead of red with a black tip. I yawned and said "Dad thinks I got my mom's eyes, but I don't really know. All I know for sure is I'm more agile than a regular wolf, and stronger than most despite my leaner build. So here's my question for you, do you happen to have nine tails like the Kintana family usual does?"
She mumbled softly then unbuttoned her pants and slid them down a bit allowing her tails to slip free. I raised an eyebrow and she said "My parents told me to keep most of them wrapped around my waist and only let one show through my pants. They thought it wouldn't be wise for a member of the royal fox family to admit who she was. How'd you know I had more than one tail?" I shrugged and said "I just had a feeling that there was more to you, and as I said your family tend to have more than one tail." She raised an eyebrow and said "How'd you know our family's secret? The only ones who know that have royal blood, and the only ones with royal blood who are unaccounted for are my mother's distant cousin Nira, and my sister Solara." I raised an eyebrow and said "You're sister is named after the sun?" just as the bell rang. She ignored my question and headed to her next class, so I just shrugged and started for the shop.
As I walked I thought about what she said and silently wondered why I knew that. Dad sure as fuck didn't, and I didn't remember mom telling me anything about it. I figured it was just a lucky guess and ignored the nagging thoughts at the back of my mind. As soon as I walked in the shop teacher said "Well it appears we have a special guest today class. Welcome Mr. Wolf. I didn't expect you'd be joining us since your schedule says you are to be allowed to work on whatever you deem necessary. However if it's not to much trouble could you at least listen to my rules before rushing off to work?" I blinked and thought "Oh fuck what did I do to piss off the shop teacher? I haven't even been to class five minutes and already he's mocking me."
Outwardly I was completely calm though and I responded "Sir I'd be extremely grateful to hear the rules of your shop from the one who runs it." He stared at me surprised then went over the rules for the entire class with an eye on me. I suddenly realized it must have had something to do with all the rumors that were flying around. I sighed and listened to his rules, then when he was done walked back to the shop. I grabbed a few simple hand tools then headed out to my car and started working on taking off the engine's cover. I glanced at the reactor and muttered "Damn need a few fuel rods, and it looks like the generator is near bursting. I guess I'll have to find a way to drain the excess energy better." After that my mumbling became incoherent to anyone else while I focused on the technical problems of the GS. After a while I made a few adjustments and put the cover back on then put the tools away just as the bell rang. I walked back to my car and slammed the hood then turned around to find myself face to face with Luna.
I raised an eyebrow and she said "I was wondering if you could give me a ride to a special area on the edge of town." I sighed and said "Why not, get in the car and we'll go." She nodded and got in the passenger side. I started to go to the driver's side and ran into Jesse. She stared at me then at Luna and said "What's up?" I explained and said "You can come if you want?" She shook her head and said "I promised to help a friend study, but can we hang out at the last game of the year on Friday?" I nodded and she walked off to her friend's car then I got in and started the engine. I gave Luna a look that said don't ask then backed out of the parking lot and started for the edge of town.
After about half an hour she told me to stop in front of an old cave. I stared at it and shivered feeling a strange aura. She got out and motioned for me to follow her. I silently cursed my instincts as I got out and followed her watching everything with the eyes of her guardian. She glanced back at me and motioned for me to follow her then walked into the cave. I silently cursed her and all of her family then walked in behind her and glanced around. The walls of the cave were covered in numbers, pictures, and ancient runes.
My eyes kept focusing on the runes and the more I stared at them the more I was sure I could read them. Suddenly Luna said "This is the cave of godhood. No one knows why it's called that, all they know is it's supposedly been placed here by the god of our world so he could choose his replacements." She snorted at that and said "I don't know if that's true or not, but I do know that it's a place where many people in town come for inspiration. It's also an escape for the freaks like me, and the outcasts like my older brother. So, what do you think of it?"
I shrugged and said "The images on the walls are beautiful, the numbers remind me of code, and the symbols are interesting. Although I get the feeling I've been here before, and it's almost as if someone is telling me to open my mind." She stared at me and said "That's different, most people just say it gives them a sense of piece. Well now that I showed you it I guess we should go." I nodded and we walked back out to the GS then I drove her home. It took about an hour to get to her house because it was clear across town. When I pulled over a large Unicorn with pure white fur walked out and said "Slut you better get the fuck out of that car and come bow before me, before I beat you." Luna looked at me with sad, yet resigned, eyes then slowly started to get out of the car. I grabbed hold of her arm and said softly "I'll go explain everything and it'll be ok."
She shook her head and said "You don't know him. He's been drinking so he's uncontrollable." I muttered softly and tightened her seat belt then got out of the car and walked up to the unicorn. He looked at me and said "Ah so you must be her latest puny pussy chaser. Well you can't have her, every female in my herd is mine." I growled softly and said "Go inside and calm down before we get into a fight sir. Luna and I were just talking as I gave her a ride from school. If you have a problem with that, take it out on me instead of on he-." He slammed his fist into my gut as I started to finish and knocked me down the steps then followed it up by stomping on my leg. I let out a cough that hit him in the eyes with a bit of my blood. He stopped and wiped his eyes clean laughing.
He smiled darkly and said "I think I like the smell of your hybrid blood boy. Maybe I'll paint my front walk with it." As he started to stomp down on me again a voice said "Roll right then come up and kick him. He has an old war injury which is part of why he's always drinking. If you hit him right in one blow, this will be over quickly." I followed it's instructions to the letter, but sadly my kick didn't hit his injury dead on. He twisted at the last second causing me to only give it a glancing blow. He stumbled a bit then turned to face me with pure rage on his face.
I growled and bared my fangs like a feral then punched him in the face. The voice guided me a few more times throughout the fight then just vanished as it ended. I got the feeling that whoever owned the voice hadn't wanted to change things the way he did, but if he hadn't stepped in I'd be hurt pretty bad and Luna's father would be dead. As he laid on the ground covered in mud I gave him one swift kick to the side to finish it and said "That was for what you said about your daughter." Luna rushed over and hugged me then the rest of her family piled out and started asking me what happened. I explained as Luna's younger brothers took their father inside and the girls helped me limp back to the GS. Luna's mother was the only one who hadn't come out, so I was surrounded by her and her sisters.
Since all of my defenses were down from the fight this caused a big problem to show up in my pants from all the attention. Thankfully none of them noticed it before I shut the door of the GS and hid it from view. I looked at Luna and said "So who are all these other lovely ladies?" She raised an eyebrow at the other since it implied she was a lovely lady, and said "These are my sisters. The two at the back with gold in their manes are my older sister Rissa and Mya. the two hanging onto your window obsessing over what you did to our father are my youngest sisters Tanya and Tiana. The other three are Media, the eldest out of the middle four of us since she's a senior, Kin the junior and second eldest, and Lorena the sophomore. I'm the third youngest basically." I nodded and said "Well nice to meet you girls." They smiled and I heard Mya say to Rissa "Wonder if Luna wouldn't mind sharing this one. He's a gentleman, and he took dad down without to much trouble."
Luna didn't seem to hear them and she smiled at me then said "Thanks for everything. Maybe one day Dad will realize what the drink is doing to him, and us." I raised an eyebrow and asked "Why's he drinking apple brandy? Does he have some sort of injury?" I asked Luna and her sisters that question because I had to verify what the voice had told me. Luna looked away and said "During the dragon wars his leg was nearly shattered. Most of the magic at the time was limited to combat, so they couldn't help him. The doctors say it will take a miracle for his leg to heal completely now." I sighed softly and mumbled "A noble man saddled with such pain and resentment, no wonder he acts the way he does."
Suddenly a striking black furred unicorn with a gold horn, instead of Luna's crimson one, walked forward and said "So you see my husband's dilemma. He is a proud man so he refuses to ask anyone to heal him, and thus he hides in the drink. The girls couldn't take away the injury, but they could remove the pain. However I think he's lived with it so long he's afraid to believe it will truly be gone. The only coherent mumbling I get out of him when he's to drunk to think is 'He says that those who play god will fix it, well when will that be?'. I fear deeply for him, my daughters, and myself if something doesn't happen by the end of the school year. He doesn't worry very much, but that's only because he knows the girls have no time to themselves, but as you saw he is very paranoid of the girls and anyone they meet."
I nodded and held out my hand saying politely "Jason Wolf. Son of the local executive Damion Wolf owner of the company "Wolf enterprises." The guy who basically bought out the company this town thrived on in order to improve it's working conditions." She raised an eyebrow and said "Among our kind it's customary to introduce ourselves by our mother's name when talking to a female." I smiled at her sadly and said "I didn't even learn my mother's name. My apologies if I offended your customs." She smiled sadly in understanding and said "No my apologies for bringing up something that obviously still bothers you. So why did you bring my daughter home." That's when Luna stepped in and explained. I just closed my eyes and laid back in my seat trying to relax. After a few minutes Luna's mother said "Well, it appears that my family owes you a bit of a debt. If you ever need anything just call on us by name and one will arrive." I nodded then started the engine with a wave and headed out.
The first thing I noticed when I got home was that my dad's car wasn't there, so I had time to get my story straight. Then I saw that his latest personal assistant's car was there and rubbed my eyes. I parked my car in the spare garage then got out and walked to the house where she was leaning in the doorway watching me. I blinked when I saw her then raised an eyebrow and said "Either dad got a call, or he's not going to be home tonight. Which is it?" She shook her head and said "You are to perceptive Jason. You're father had to discuss some stuff with the head of the old teams at work, including rehiring old workers, so he won't be home tonight." I nodded and stretched then walked past her heading for the kitchen. She watched me for a few minutes then said "You're blood or someone else's?" I shrugged as I walked and replied "Mostly other people's a little is mine."
She sighed and said "Why is it so hard for you to keep your word about fighting." I opened the fridge and grabbed a few slices of pizza from last night then put them on a plate and popped it in the microwave. I set the microwave to cook then turned to her and said "Because I'm both my father and my mother's son. Maybe it's the fact I'm a hybrid who pisses people off. Maybe even it's because I have a hero complex. Also if anyone calls looking for me, unless it's a loudmouth dragon seeking a fight, I'm already asleep." She sighed and nodded so I walked over and smiled at her then walked upstairs. As I walked I thought about when she'd showed up.
She'd joined dad's staff as an intern when she was only eighteen, and her appearance hadn't changed since then. She is, and was, a young cheetah with black hair that framed her face, had the usual pattern of spots, however on gold fur instead of yellow, and tended to wear loose clothes that disguised her figure. She was a few inches shorter than me, and had an above average figure. I didn't pay much attention when I was younger, but now it was hard not to notice. As my thoughts on her came to a close I got to the staircase. I slowly ascended it and thought about the way school was probably going to go. Little did I know, that after this year everything was going to be completely different.
To Be Continued...................................
For those that know my work welcome back. For those just checking out my stuff, well this was a bit special. I intended to use it as a short story, however due to my muse, the fact I haven't posted, and the fact that it just doesnt' fit as a short story, I have decided to make it into a five chapter story arc all it's own. The first two will mainly introduce the story's components, and the rest will be the depth of the plot. So I guess with that said I'll see you next upload which should come up sooner rather than later. No yiff yet, but we're very close for those who remember the esteemed story "A Not So Average Highschool Life" or Asterion Academy. Which speaking of those Asterion will be starting again soon, and Highschool Life will be reappearing as Gene High.
With that I thank you all and I am back to work.
Sincerely Jake Shadow Wolf. Author of Playing God,and so much more.
