Chapter 6: Kitara Gives Her Last Lesson and Rohan’s Journey Continues
#6 of Rohan's Journey
Yeah, I know this is shorter than the others. Comment and critic. I may have a second story coming when this one is over or if I just can't wait. Anyway I hope you like it.
Rohan found himself pleasantly surprised, woken up by Kitara, sitting astride his chest as usual.
"Hi," said Rohan, "Where'd you go for three days?"
"I don't have to tell you where I went, besides I thought you'd like the break." replied Kitara, standing up, "Now get up. We're not done with your training." Groaning Rohan got up.
"Stop complaining and get your armor." said Kitara, with a smile that concerned Rohan, "We're gonna do something special today."
"Great." Rohan said sarcastically as he went to get his armor.
"Don't you remember the last time you talked to me like that?" asked Kitara sweetly. Rohan remembered, wincing. Kitara laughed and waited for his return.
"This will be your last lesson." said Kitara when Rohan got back. Raistlin watched from the cave, knowing this would be interesting.
?
"This should be easier than any of the other lessons." said Kitara.
"So why is it last?" asked Rohan.
"Because you need all the other lessons to do this one." replied Kitara, "Now stop asking questions and let me explain." Rohan clamped his mouth shut, having been about to ask another.
"I know that that fox did something similar with you, breathing in counts of five, right?" Kitara asked. Rohan just nodded.
"Okay, well we're going to do the same thing, but with three instead of five." said Kitara. Rohan began to breathe in the pattern.
"Open your eyes you idiot, were doing this while fighting." Kitara yelled.
"I thought you said it would be easy!" Rohan protested.
"Just do it." Kitara said. Rohan tried to, and found it easier than he thought. He surprised himself by neatly parrying Kitara's strike and countering his own. He followed up with a combo, and Kitara countered him with her own; this continued back and forth.
?
After several hours of this, they stopped for lunch.
"Okay," said Rohan, "This is easy, but why did it help?"
"Breathing like that speeds up your reflexes and makes it easier for you to anticipate incoming attacks." replied Kitara, "Now get up, we're not done." Rohan got up and they continued their fighting.
?
They continued with the new training for two more weeks, Kitara now being hit or knocked down just as much as or more often than Rohan.
"Time to wake up," said Kitara sweetly, "You really do like to sleep don't you?"
"Only until I get woken up." replied Rohan. Kitara got off him and walked outside, Rohan quickly followed.
"I'm finished with your training Rohan." said Kitara, "I taught you everything I know."
"That means it's time for us to go." said Raistlin.
"I'll miss training with you." said Rohan, embracing Kitara.
"You stupid wolf!" Kitara yelled, pushing him away, "I'm going with you!" Rohan blushed, saved by his fur again, feeling more stupid than he ever had before.
"I can't have my student getting killed because he didn't have enough help." she said. "How are you going to carry your armor?" asked Rohan, still embarrassed, "I don't have enough room for mine and yours in my knapsack."
"She had one made." said Raistlin, Kitara was obviously still mad.
"Is that why you were gone for three days?" Rohan asked. Kitara just sent a seething glare at him. Rohan started back to the cave to get his things.
"They're here." said Raistlin, looking to the two knapsacks sitting against a tree. Rohan picked his up and held Kitara's out to her. Kitara snatched hers from him with another glare. Raistlin shook his head and started off to the north, the Dragon's Teeth visible in the distance.
?
Kitara refused to acknowledge Rohan's existence, talking to Raistlin as they walked. Rohan was following behind hanging his head and wondering how he would fix what he had done. It was almost night and they would have to set up camp soon. Rohan found himself looking at Kitara while he was walking; every time he did, he forced his eyes back to the ground. They stopped to make camp, Rohan quickly built a fire and started cooking some fish they had caught earlier; then sat against a tree while they cooked. Kitara sat against a tree on the other side of the fire, looking at the stars above. Raistlin sat next to her; he looked at Rohan through the fire and shook his head. Rohan checked on the fish, they were done, noticing Kitara looking at him he went over and gave her two fish to her.
"Thanks." Kitara said.
"Welcome." said Rohan, giving Raistlin his fish. He went back over to his tree and ate his fish in silence, staring at the ground. He went to sleep, feeling horrible.
?
"Get up." Raistlin said. Rohan got up, picking his knapsack up and putting it on. Raistlin continued north, Kitara next to him and Rohan behind. They traveled all day, making camp at nightfall. Rohan went hunting, not wanting to stay in camp with nothing to do. Soon finding a deer, he jumped into a tree and waited for it to walk beneath. He carried it back to camp, dropping it near the fire.
"Do you want it now or do you want it cooked?" he asked.
"I don't care." said Raistlin.
"Cooked." Kitara said. Rohan went to work, happy he had gotten a reply that wasn't a glare. When the deer was done, he pulled it off the fire. Rohan handed Kitara and Raistlin their portions, taking his to the opposite side of the fire and sitting down, staring at the ground. He wondered if Kitara would ever say more than one word at a time to him again.
"Rohan." said Kitara.
"What?" Rohan asked, wondering if she could read his mind.
"I'm sorry." Kitara said.
"Sorry?" replied Rohan, "For what? You didn't do anything."
"I overreacted." said Kitara, "I shouldn't have gotten so mad."
"I'm the one that should be sorry." said Rohan, "But why did you come over here in the first place, you were still mad just a couple of minutes ago?"
"Raistlin convinced me to. He thought you would do something stupid if I didn't." said Kitara with a small smile.
"He's probably right." said Rohan. Kitara sat down next to him and they finished their deer in silence, falling asleep leaning against a tree. Raistlin got up and padded over.
"Perhaps this won't be as bad a trip as I thought." he said, laying down between them, looking into the dying fire.
?
Rohan woke up the next morning with a pain in his arm; the pain soon disappeared.
"Wake up." said Kitara. The pain returned and he opened his eyes.
"Why are you biting me?" Rohan asked.
"Raistlin said you didn't like being woken up with a wolf on your chest and suggested this." Kitara replied.
"I think I prefer the wolf on my chest." said Rohan.
"Good," said Kitara with a grimace, "Because you don't taste very good." Rohan stood up with a chuckle, helping Kitara to her feet.
"Where is that wolf anyway, I think he needs a beating." Rohan said, looking around.
"I'm in no need of a beating, if it helps, I'm sorry." Raistlin said, stepping out of the brush.
"I guess I'll let it go then." said Rohan.
"Let's go." Raistlin said, walking north again, his smile unnoticed. They continued north, Raistlin leading while Rohan and Kitara followed behind, talking to each other.
?
They continued with a much warmer atmosphere and fell into a routine. Kitara would wake Rohan up and they would walk until nightfall, eating lunch on the trail. Rohan would go find something for dinner if they didn't find a stream for fish earlier. Rohan and Kitara would eat together, while Raistlin sat between them, eating his own meal.
?
After a week, Rohan was surprised and disappointed to when Raistlin woke him up.
"Where's Kitara?" Rohan asked.
"Over there." said Raistlin, looking to the north where Kitara was leaning against a tree, waiting. They started walking north, Rohan bringing up the rear once again. Kitara and Raistlin were in quiet conversation, Rohan was behind them wondering what he had said or done to make Kitara mad. All day she stayed separate from him, not saying a word. Rohan set the fire and went hunting as usual, still wondering what he had done. He cooked the food, but before he could get up Kitara had gotten hers and Raistlin's and sat back down. Still confused, he got his food and ate in silence, falling asleep soon after he finished.
?
"Wake up." said Raistlin. Rohan got up, and saw Kitara waiting again.
"What did I do to make her mad at me?" Rohan asked Raistlin quietly.
"She's not mad." said Raistlin.
"Then why is she avoiding me?" asked Rohan. Raistlin had a confused look for a moment, but then it cleared.
"I forgot you grew up with humans." Raistlin said, "Look, she's not mad, umm, how can I put this, how long was it since she disappeared last?"
"Um, a month or so." said Rohan, puzzled.
"Right." said Raistlin, "And she's a female."
"What do you---oh." Rohan said, before it hit him; when it did, he almost fell over.
"It's not the same as humans, but you get the idea, right?" asked Raistlin. Rohan nodded mutely.
"Now come on." Raistlin said. Kitara had a short and whispered conversation with Raistlin with a glance at Rohan thrown in, followed by a small laugh.
?
They continued north for 12 more days, Kitara had rejoined Rohan the next day, until the reached the base of the Dragon's Teeth.
"We must be much more cautious now, we're in dragon territory." said Raistlin when they arrived. They set up camp and Raistlin took the first watch. They slept uneasily that night, unsure of what to expect. Kitara awoke Rohan in the usual manner, looking tired.
"So where are we going wolf boy?" she asked when he stood up.
"I'm not really sure, all Tanis said was that Ryutai lived inside the mountains." replied Rohan.
"That's a lot of help." Kitara said sarcastically.
"I think I know where." said Raistlin, "There's one giant cave that's called the Dragon's Maw."
"I think that sounds like a good place to start." said Rohan. They set off to the east, hoping to make it by nightfall of the next day.
End of Chapter 6. More to follow, you'll meet the elusive Ryutai.
