Chapter 4: The Beginning of A Journey and A Surprise Meeting
#4 of Rohan's Journey
Sorry this took longer, it got deleted and I had to rewrite it. *Groans* Anyway blah comment blah blah critic, you know the drill.
The wolves looked at each other, one of them walked off into the cave. "Thanks." said Rohan, sitting down to wait. Soon, the wolf came back with Krynn and Raistlin in tow. "We need to talk," said Rohan, "I've finished my training with Tanis." "That's good." said Krynn. "Now, I need to find my father's teacher," said Rohan, "He lives in the Dragon's Teeth." "And you want me to guide you." finished Raistlin. "Yes," Rohan said, "Will you help me?" Raistlin and Krynn had a hurried and whispered conversation, with many looks at Rohan thrown in. "We will," said Krynn, "but there is a problem we must take care of first." "Problem?" asked Rohan, "Maybe I could help." "We hoped you would say that." said Krynn. "One of our pups is missing." said Raistlin. "How can I help?" asked Rohan, "You have and entire pack that can look for them." "Normally that would be true," said Krynn, "But we believe he was taken by a human village." "And a pack of wolves going through villages would attract too much attention." Raistlin said. "Of course I'll help," Rohan said, "But I need to go to my village and get some clothes first, since I'll be doing this as a human." "Well let's go then." Raistlin said.
Rohan and Raistlin quickly reached the village. Raistlin waited at the tree line while Rohan continued to his house. Rohan found a window that the current resident had left open and climbed into the empty room. Putting his ear to the door, he could the breathing of one person in the house, asleep. Rohan silently searched the single floor and found some clothes and a knapsack in the bedroom, he tried them on in the deserted room; they were a little big, but that was fine with him. Rohan climbed back out the window and went to the tree line and the waiting Raistlin. "Okay, so where's the village?" asked Rohan. "To the northeast, a few hours away." Raistlin replied. They set off immediately; worried they wouldn't make it in time.
They arrived in the late morning hours; Rohan quickly changed into a human and put the clothes on, pulling the hood of the cloak over his head; he noted that the pendant's chain got smaller, keeping it a comfortable length. Rohan walked through the village, hearing children yelling, he went to find out why they were out of their houses so early. He found a crowd of children surrounding a cage, stopping a man with a spear from passing. "No! He's ours and we won't let you hurt him!" one of the children was yelling. "That wolf has been stealing sheep, and he's gonna pay." said the man. Quickly deciding what he had to do, Rohan ducked into an alley, he had the clothes off, in the knapsack, and changed into his wolf form in under a minute. Rohan padded up behind the man with the spear with no sound. The children, who had been loudly protesting moments earlier, fell silent. "Finally, you kids shut up." said the man. "W-w-wolf." one of the kids managed to stammer. "Yeah," the man said, "That's what I'm here for, and you kids are still in my way." "N-no," the child said, pointing, "that one." The man turned around, and Rohan jumped on him, pinning him to the ground.
The man passed out, and Rohan stepped off him. He padded to the cage, the children parting in front of him. "Caramon?" said Rohan, the children backing away from the barking wolf. "Rohan?" said Caramon. "Wait a second while I get you out." Rohan said, to the white muzzled black wolf that was now twice as big. He grabbed a bar with his teeth and pulled, bending it out of place. As he reached for the next one he felt a tapping on his shoulder, turning, he saw a small child. "M-mister Wolf?" the child said, "Does he need to go with you?" Rohan, surprised at the child's bravery, nodded. Another child opened the cage door. "Caramon, go to the woods to the southwest, Raistlin's waiting." Rohan said. Caramon quickly left, going around the village in the woods. "Thank you Mr. Wolf." the child that had tapped him said. Rohan changed just enough of his mouth demon to be able to speak. "Thank YOU, little ones," he said as he closed the cage, "When anyone asks tell them I let out the wolf, so you won't get in trouble." The children all nodded. Rohan bent the other bar enough so that Caramon would have been able to get out easily. "Promise to say I did it." Rohan said, turning back to the children. "We promise." they all chorused.
Rohan quickly went back to the alley, changed into human form, and dressed himself. Stepping out he went back to the children, who were talking excitedly. "What happened here?" he asked. "A big, silver wolf let the other wolf out." they said. "What happened to him?" Rohan asked, pointing to the unconscious man. "The big wolf knocked him down." they replied. "I'm glad you kept your promise." Rohan said quietly. The children stared wide-eyed, Rohan just smiled and walked away, leaving them to their excited chattering.
Rohan arrived at the woods in demon form with the clothes in his knapsack. "I'm glad you guys waited for me." he said. "We wouldn't have left without you." said Caramon. "He's right," said Raistlin, "But he also knows that when he gets back he and Krynn are going to have a nice, long talk." Caramon's head and ears drooped. "Let's go." said Rohan, smiling.
They arrived back at the cave that night. "Thank you, Rohan." said Krynn. "Glad to help." he replied. Krynn and Raistlin walked into the woods with the drooping Caramon in tow. Rohan entered the cave; the pups mobbed him yet again. After a few minutes playing, he let out a loud yawn. "How long has it been since you slept, Rohan?" asked one of the watching mothers. "Umm, yesterday morning, but I'm fine." said Rohan. "You pups get off of him and let him sleep." the she-wolf said. "No, I'm really okay." said Rohan around another yawn. "You sound just like one of the pups, now go to sleep." she said. Rohan lay down and went to sleep, the laughter of wolves following him all the way.
"Get up." said Raistlin, in the familiar stand-on-the-chest method. "I'm up, I'm up," said Rohan, "But isn't there some other way you could wake me up?" "I could bite you." suggested Rohan. "In that case I prefer this." Rohan said, standing up. "Good," said Raistlin, "Hey you guys! He's up!" Rohan had just enough time to change into a wolf before the pups got there. "Oh no, you're not getting out of this." Rohan yelled as he jumped on the fleeing Raistlin, dragging him into the fight. Rohan soon slipped out of the cave, leaving Raistlin to deal with the pups. Rohan found something to eat and washed his face in a stream. Rohan padded back to the cave and found Raistlin waiting for him. "That was a nice trick." said Raistlin. "I thought you'd like it." Rohan said. "I think you spent too much time with that fox." said Raistlin. "Maybe." said Rohan, smiling. "When do you want to leave?" asked Raistlin. "How about now?" Rohan asked. "Perfect," said Raistlin, "I've already got permission from Krynn to go when you're ready." "Let's go then." said Rohan. With one last goodbye to everyone, Rohan and Raistlin left.
They were traveling north on one of the human roads, it was the quickest route through the swamps. Rohan was in human form, carrying the knapsack, he had filled with food to ward off questions of why he had no supplies, and Raistlin was following close behind. If they met anyone, they planned to have Raistlin continue in the woods until the person passed. They would travel on this road until they were out of the swamps, at the next village, then it would take 3 weeks for them to reach the base of the Dragon's Teeth.
They set up camp that night, still half a day's walk from the village. Had they looked up they would have seen a black wolf demon, looking down from the trees.
They had passed through the village at noon, Rohan stopping to get some better-fitting clothes while Raistlin skirted the village in the trees. They set up camp that night, still unknowingly under the surveillance of the black wolf. Rohan cooked some food on the fire he made, while Raistlin dozed next to him. Finishing his meal, Rohan leaned against a tree and fell asleep.
Rohan woke up around noon, not seeing Raistlin he tried to stand up. Someone had bound his legs and hands but he tried again. The spear thrust in his face forced him back down. Looking to the wielder, he saw a wolf demon, a female wolf demon. "Human," said the wolf demon, "where did you get that pendant and why does this wolf say he is your guide?" "First," said Rohan, changing to a demon and breaking his bonds, standing up, and noticing that the demon was only 6'4", "I'm not a human, second, that's none of your business and third, because he is." The demon, obviously taken aback, gaped in disbelief. "Who are you?" she asked. "I'm Rohan," he replied, "Who are you?" "I'm asking the questions." she said. "I think that a name isn't too much to ask." Raistlin put in. "He's right." said Rohan. "I'm Kitara." (Pronunciation Kit-air-uh. Didn't want this at the beginning since it would ruin the surprise.) she said.
"Are you still going to stab me?" Rohan asked, looking at the spear pointed at his muzzle. Kitara hesitated, but lowered the spear. Rohan noticed the hard-leather armor Kitara was wearing for the first time. "Where did you get that armor?" asked Rohan. "I got it from the village, they're known for their armor, but they didn't seem to need it since there haven't even been any travelers except you in the past year. "I think I'll get some." said Rohan. "I don't think they have anything in your size." Kitara said, looking him up and down. Rohan was unaccustomed to such attention, having grown up as an outcast. He blushed at the attention, having barely talked to anyone growing up, much less girls; luckily, his fur covered it. Turning, he said, "I'll figure something out." "Don't think I'm done with you just because I'm letting you go." said Kitara. "I know," said Rohan, "Where should I meet you?" "Come back here," she replied, "Then follow the trees with the spears in them. That shouldn't be too hard." "Fine." said Rohan as he walked back towards the village, leaving Kitara and Raistlin behind.
Rohan arrived at the village that night; he quickly found the blacksmith's house by the smell of fire and metal. He jumped onto the roof and landed silently. He opened the poorly latched bedroom window from the roof. Flipping inside, he landed without a sound. He padded to the bed where the blacksmith and his wife were sleeping. He pulled the smith out of bed, covering his mouth so he wouldn't yell and jumped out the window. He quickly took him to the building with his furnace and workbench, lighting the lanterns with his demonic energy. He set the man down, still covering his mouth. He crouched down so their eyes met, "Listen to me, this is not a dream," Rohan said, "I need some armor, and your going to make me some. Nod if you understand." The man nodded violently. "That's good, get the measurements you need, but don't yell." said Rohan, taking his hand from the man's mouth. The man started taking measurements, but flinched whenever Rohan moved. "How long would some light chain mail take you?" asked Rohan when the man finished. "O-one month." the smith replied. "What if you worked only on this?" Rohan asked. "Two weeks." replied the man. "I'll be back in 16 days, but I'll check in on you now and then, and don't tell anyone who this is for either." said Rohan, "I'm going to take you back now." Rohan picked the man up and covered his mouth again, anticipating a yell from the jump into the second-story window. He landed softly and set the man down again. "Remember, 16 days." said Rohan quietly. "I will." the blacksmith said. Rohan repeated the act at the tailor's house, leaving with some regular sized clothes and an appointment for tomorrow night to pick up the over-sized ones. He quickly went into the woods. Too disgusted with himself to do anything else, he sat against a tree and fell asleep.
