#1 of To Be A Shadow

Chaos knew he was either very pathetic, stupid, or just insane as he remained in his seat and waited for his next speed dating partner to arrive. He had no idea what had possessed him to participate in such a ridiculous method of dating, but it was his last hope and he had run out of alternatives.

Speed dating was a crazy Western trend, but Chaos was willing to try it since he was guaranteed to meet a large number of people. He was in a big room filled with tables and chairs, and all the participants were put into pairs and went on short, miniature dates that lasted about five minutes.

At the end of each session, a bell was rung and everyone rotated and moved onto a new partner. Chaos had hoped that he would miraculously fall in love at first sight, but so far his plan wasn't working and he had only been paired up with morons.

"Hello," he greeted his new partner.

A bat with snow white fur and hair arranged in multiple little braids came up to Chaos's table and sat down. Because of his sexual preference for the same gender, Chaos had chosen a session exclusively for males.

"My name is Chaos," Chaos said, forced to start the conversation since his companion was quiet so far.

"Zero," the other male said, pointing at himself. He didn't smile and gave off a rather creepy aura.

Chaos picked at the tablecloth, fidgeting uncomfortably. "So... what do you like to do, Zero-san?"

"I like to tie people up. Do you like to be tied up at all?"

Chaos tried to laugh, but it came out sounding awkward and unnatural. Zero wasn't looking at him and appeared to be staring into space. "I've never been tied up before, so I can't really say whether I like it or not."

"Oh." Zero still didn't smile or develop any type of facial expression. "Do you like to be raped?"

"No, sorry." Chaos fell silent and looked impatiently at his watch, as the tip of his tail twitched nervousely. Five minutes was an excruciatingly long time when contending with such an unpleasant ordeal.

A few seconds ticked by and Chaos grew increasingly less comfortable. Zero, on the other hand, appeared completely composed and spoke up again.

"Are you a frustrated masturbator?"

Chaos stared at the other fur with wide eyes. "Am I a what?"

Zero sighed. "I guess not. I'm so hungry right now."

Soon, but not soon enough for Chaos, the ringing of a bell filled the air and it was time for Zero to get up and leave. He silently walked away, much to Chaos's relief, and went to the table next door.

Chaos expected his next partner to be another freak, but was pleasantly surprised when an undeniably attractive black wolf came walking up. In fact, he was better looking than any other person Chaos had seen that day, despite the fact that he didn't look very happy.

"Hi there, I'm Chaos." Suddenly nervous for a reason he couldn't explain, Chaos put on what he hoped was a sexy smile.

The other male was a little shorter than he was and sat down across from Chaos. "My name's Daichi. I'm already bored with this whole thing, so don't expect me to instantly become attracted to you because it's probably not going to happen."

Chaos nodded. "I understand. I'm bored too."

Over the course of a second, the two males took in each others appearances. Daichi had black mid-length hair which covered one of his amber colored eyes, and the ends of the front were dyed white. He wore short sleeves, revealing arms that were slightly muscled. He looked like he was going for the tough look, but Chaos only thought he was kind of cute despite his attempt to be masculine and intimidating.

Chaos was aware of his own appearance and wished he had done a better job of grooming his long, slightly messy brown hair. He longed to put his sunglasses on since he thought they made him look good, but then he would barely be able to see and it wouldn't be worth it to be half-blind for the sake of vanity.

"So what are you doing at a place like this?" he asked Daichi. "Shouldn't you be hanging out at a biker bar or something?"

"I'm probably here for the same reason you are," Daichi replied. "Desperation. The only difference is that I could get anybody I wanted and you look like you can't get laid."

Chaos was immediately offended and glared at his companion, twitching an ear in anger. "Take that back. If you can get whoever you want, then why did you claim to be desperate? You're even more pathetic than I am for pretending to be something you're not."

"You don't know anything about me. Know what you're talking about before you go and start making judgments."

"Then you need to do the same thing," said Chaos, still annoyed. Amazingly, he rather enjoyed being irritated. It was exciting to have an argument with someone who appeared to be practically a sex god in his eyes, and it was a nice change from the people who were either boring, weird, or complete idiots.

Daichi sighed and ran a paw through his hair, ruffling it. "This speed dating thing is bullshit. I haven't had a good first impression of anyone."

Chaos shrugged. "I'd fuck you in an instant."

"Plenty of people would. A lot of them have."

Chaos found himself becoming terribly curious about the wolf and wished they could sit and talk for at least half an hour instead of five pathetic minutes.

"I think you're the sanest person I've met today, Daichi-san. The last guy I was paired with was so creepy." The more he looked at Daichi, the more his interest grew. "You know, I think we ought to hook up after this."

Daichi didn't reply because the bell rang, signaling the end of their session.

"Damn it!" Chaos whispered under his breath. Why did it all have to end at such a crucial moment?

"I can't wait to go home and take a nap," Daichi muttered. He started to stand up, but Chaos reached across the table and grabbed his paw.

"Wait. At least tell me what your first impression of me was. Surely I'm not as bad as everyone else here?"

"The five minutes are over," said Daichi. "I can't talk to you anymore." He wrenched his paw out of the other male's grasp and got to his feet. "I don't know what's so fascinating about me. I haven't done anything besides insult you in the beginning."

"Well don't you believe in becoming instantly attracted to someone?" Chaos asked.

"Hey, move along," someone said to Daichi, giving him a poke in the shoulder. "Didn't you hear the bell ring?"

Daichi didn't say another word and promptly walked away. Chaos tried not to watch him, but his eyes fixed upon Daichi like greedy magnets and refused to look away. He would love nothing more than to take the lupine home and have his way with him.

His thoughts were interrupted when his next partner sat down. Chaos wasn't in the mood for talking to more random strangers and stared dumbly at his companion.

The newcomer had pale, wild hair and fortunately spoke up first. "I'm Riku and I really like dancing. Want to watch me dance sometime?"

"Er... not really." There were only a few more people left to go through and Chaos would be glad when the ordeal was finally over. He couldn't stop thinking about Daichi and what he would look like naked. He didn't know what was wrong with him. He desired a male he didn't even know and wondered about his state of mental health.

Riku went away and nothing significant happened. Chaos tried his best to pretend to listen to his other partners, though in actuality he was ignoring them. At last, everything was over and Chaos went to the organizer of the event so he could tell him who he wanted his contact information sent to.

He felt incredibly stupid as he gave out his name, address, and phone number and requested that it all be sent to Daichi. Daichi probably wouldn't even pay any attention to the information when he received it.

It was worth a try though. Nobody else had interested Chaos and if he didn't make a move on Daichi, then he wouldn't have anybody at all.

Feeling tired and hungry, he was more than ready to go home. As he headed for the front doors of the building, he saw Daichi up ahead and developed that weird, obsessed feeling again. He couldn't possibly let the dark lupine just walk away without saying another word to him first. He had never been so powerfully curious about a stranger before.

Chaos walked faster until he had caught up to Daichi and was only a few feet away. Daichi opened up one of the double doors and exited through it, and Chaos was suddenly possessed by a crazy idea.

He rushed forward and pushed on the door hard so that it ended up hitting Daichi, who was not yet out of range. The black wolf emitted a cry of pain and turned around to see what was going on.

"Sorry about that," Chaos apologized, innocently pretending that it was an accident. "I didn't even see you."

Recognizing Chaos, Daichi sighed. "Oh. It's you again."

"That's right. Me again. My name's Chaos, in case you forgot." Chaos reached out and placed a paw on Daichi's back, gently stroking him and receiving a thrill at actually touching him. "Are you all right? That door must have gotten you pretty hard." Realized how dirty that sounded, he smiled. "Though I would prefer it if I got you hard instead."

"That's an original one, but still an incredibly lame pick-up line," Daichi responded. "I've heard enough of those to last me an eternity."

The sun shone outside, lunchtime rapidly approached, and plenty of people were out on the sidewalks, but Chaos noticed nothing in the world except for the wolf in front of him. The more unfriendly Daichi behaved, the more Chaos wanted him.

"Did you find anyone you liked today?" he asked politely.

"Not a single person." Daichi glanced at his watch, flicking his tail in annoyance. "I don't have much time for chatting with strangers, especially ones who go around hitting me with doors."

Despite his strange infatuation, Chaos was getting frustrated. He placed his paw beneath Daichi's muzzle and tilted the shorter male's face upward so he could look into his eyes. "Haven't you realized my interest in you? Why can't you quit being anti-social and give me a chance?"

Daichi gently pulled away from Chaos's touch and met the taller fur's gaze boldly. "Because it's obvious that you just want to get into my pants. I know your type perfectly well."

"What's wrong with sex? Are you celibate or something?"

Daichi laughed and it was pleasant to see his maw open in a smile, even if it was somewhat bitter. "Celibate? I'm the opposite of everything celibacy stands for, believe me. I've had so much meaningless sex that I need something different, and I know you're not going to give that to me."

"How do you know that? I can give you a perfectly good time without merely fucking you. Let's go out for a few drinks, and then spend some time at my place."

"I don't drink alcohol," said Daichi.

So much for getting the other male drunk and taking advantage of him. Chaos would have to find a different tactic.

Daichi took a step away from Chaos and stuffed his paws inside his pockets. "I'm going home now. Maybe you'll find a one-night stand that suits your needs." He turned around and walked down the sidewalk, leaving Chaos alone.

As Chaos watched the shorter male leave, he was filled with rejection, disappointment, and most strongly of all, determination. How could Daichi possibly refuse him? There was simply no logical reason for it. Chaos wasn't going to just take such a rejection and would force Daichi to acknowledge him, no matter how much effort it took.

He could still see Daichi, though the other male was steadily getting smaller as he grew further away. Daichi lit up a cigarette and tiny clouds of smoke lingered around him, barely visible to Chaos.

It was completely insane and might possibly get him in trouble with the law, but Chaos had a plan and was willing to act on it.

He started following Daichi, making sure that he remained at a distance, and tried to look as casual and inconspicuous as possible.

It wasn't a difficult task, since Daichi remained in sight and didn't go into any buildings or vehicles. Every time he thought the other male was going to turn around and see him, Chaos hid behind a tree or telephone pole with his breath held.

"Mommy, that man isn't going to jump out from behind that tree and shoot someone, is he?" a little boy asked his mother, pointing at Chaos. "I saw that happen on TV!"

"Shh!" the mother shushed him. Shooting Chaos a nervous glance, she rushed away with her son.

Chaos laughed quietly to himself as he watched the boy and his mother leave. He supposed he looked like a crazy person at the moment, but since that was how he felt, it suited him perfectly.

He realized he might lose sight of his quarry if he lingered behind the tree for too long and started walking again, keeping his eyes on Daichi.

At last Daichi arrived at an apartment building and walked up to the front doors. Chaos's heart beat faster with excitement and he watched Daichi enter the apartment and disappear.

Aha. He had discovered where the wolf lived. Feeling like a spy or a thief, Chaos crept up to the building's entrance and peered through the glass door, his ears perked up in attention. He couldn't see Daichi and hoped that it was safe to go inside. Deciding to take a chance, he opened up the door and entered the lobby.

He caught a glimpse of black hair inside an elevator before the metal doors closed, obscuring Daichi from sight. Chaos eagerly rushed over to the elevator and looked at the numbers on the wall. A red light was on above the number two, meaning that Daichi lived on the second floor.

The only piece of information Chaos didn't have was Daichi's room number. The building looked about three or four stories high and even though Chaos knew which floor to search, there were still a lot of people in the building. He couldn't possibly go knocking on doors, hoping he stumbled upon Daichi's.

There was nothing for him to do but keep following the wolf he sought and hope he caught up to him. He pushed the "Up" button on the wall and waited for the elevator to arrive.

The elevator doors soon opened and Chaos quickly got inside, wishing the contraption could move about three times faster. To Chaos's dismay and annoyance, a bright orange fox walked up and got into the elevator with him. If only the doors had closed a couple of seconds sooner.

"Where are you headed?" the other asked Chaos.

"Second floor," Chaos replied.

"Cool, me too." The stranger, who was on the taller side, pushed the button for the second floor and studied Chaos curiously. "I've never seen you around here before. Do you live here?"

"Oh, no. I'm visiting my ex-wife," Chaos lied off the top of his head.

"The only unmarried woman on the second floor is about sixty years old. You married her hoping she would die soon and leave you her money, didn't you? But when she wouldn't die fast enough, you got rid of her!" He opened his maw to laugh..

Chaos forced out an awkward laugh. "Something like that."

Thankfully the elevator came to a stop and Chaos got out. He could hear the other male behind him but paid no attention to him and scanned the hallway, hoping to catch sight of a familiar person. To his disappointment, he didn't see Daichi and knew he was too late.

"What are you looking for? Don't you remember your ex-wife's room number?"

Chaos turned around and saw the male who had shared the elevator ride with him, and wondered how much trouble he would get in if he knocked him unconscious.

"No... This place just looks different than it did the last time I was here. Did they put in new carpet or something?"

"This carpet has been here for as long as I can remember."

"Oh." Chaos was feeling stupider by the second. "Maybe I'm thinking of a different apartment."

"Chiyoko-san lives right there, in case you forgot," the stranger said, pointing to a door with the number twelve on it.

Chaos looked at him in confusion. "Chiyoko-san?"

"Your ex-wife!"

"Oh yeah. Her name escapes me occasionally. It's been a long time since I last saw her, you know."

Chaos was glad that he was intelligent and a fairly good liar, but he didn't know how much longer he could keep up the charade. "You're a pretty helpful guy, but I would appreciate it if I was left alone. Meeting with previous spouses is stressful."

The tall fox looked like he was about to obey Chaos's wishes and go away, but the door of room number twelve suddenly opened and his face broke into a grin. "Oh, Chiyoko-san is coming out!" It was obvious that he liked getting into the business of his neighbors.

An older tabby with gray hair pulled back into a bun came out into the hallway and walked towards them, headed for the elevator. Feeling sick with dread and embarrassment, Chaos forced a smile onto his face and took the tabby by the paw. "Chiyoko, it's been a long time. I happened to be in the city and thought I would check up on you."

Chiyoko swatted Chaos away and glared. "I don't know who you think you are, but don't you dare touch me."

"Relax, it's me. It's Chaos."

"I don't know a Chaos!"

Chaos had to keep acting, since the strange fox was watching the scene with interest. "Chiyoko, I know your Alzheimer's is bothering you and I know you've been angry with me for years, but quit acting like I don't exist."

The irritated tabby took her handbag and swung it at Chaos, hitting him hard on the chest. "I'll call the police if I see you again!" She stormed over to the elevator, got inside it, and disappeared.

"Er... our meetings are always like that," Chaos remarked.

The curious fox laughed flicking his tail back and forth happily. "Well it's entertaining to watch."

"I'd better head back to my hotel," said Chaos, in a hurry to get away. "There's a train I need to catch tonight and I'd better be packed up and ready by then."

Deciding that elevators didn't give him very good luck, he took the stairs and hurried out the building before any more mishaps could occur. He was supposed to find out Daichi's exact location, but instead he had gotten himself into a bit of an adventure that involved a great deal of lying.

Chaos hadn't had lunch yet and badly needed to go home and relax from such a crazy day. Before he departed though, he needed to remember the discoveries he had made.

Fortunately he had a pen in his pocket and he plucked a scrap of paper out of the trashcan on the sidewalk, hoping it didn't carry any diseases. He wrote down the address of Daichi's apartment, then stuck the paper and pen into his pocket.

His own apartment wasn't very far and he started walking. He had a car that was in perfectly good condition, but he needed to save his money since he was afraid of running out of it soon.

A bus stop was nearby and Chaos gratefully stood at it. When the bus arrived and he boarded it, he tried to focus on other things, but no matter what he did, Daichi would always come back into his mind.

Chaos certainly had a problem on his paws. He could either forget Daichi, or keep following him until he was finally his.

Chapter Two

Chaos was lost in thought throughout the entire bus ride home. He didn't know if it was merely lust or something more, but he had an unexplainable attraction to Daichi and couldn't get rid of it. He had been about to give up hope throughout the speed...
