"Oh god, why can't I be more organized?" Adam groaned out loud as he searched through his living room for a stray water bottle. The sound of a game controller's buttons being pressed could be heard in the background as Adam got on his hands and knees to look under the couch. He looked awkward in the position, his tail flagging upwards as his eyes glanced across the floor for any sign of his bottle. A gazelle sat on the couch, staring at the TV in concentration. She seemed focused to the point of not even realizing Adam's existence, even though the deer was quite close to her.
"How you manage to lose so much stuff in our tiny apartment, I'll never understand, Adam," the gazelle laughed, not looking away from the television as she continued fighting a dragon in Skyrim. The sound of a sword being sliced through scales blasted through the sound system before a mighty roar of pain was let out from the dragon in the game.
"I don't know either, and I don't know how YOU stay organized with Dan throwing his crap everywhere," Adam said with a tinge of disgust as he grabbed an empty bottle of Muscle Milk from underneath the couch, sliding out from underneath it. He blew outward with a frown on his face, and dust balls flew in every which direction.
She glanced down at the bottle, her gaze almost unfazed by Adam's disgust. "Still not as bad as the great Chinese food incident. And it's really just a matter of knowing where your stuff is at all times, never leaving it just sitting around," the gazelle stated matter-of-factly, adjusting her Dark Souls t-shirt over her fairly busty frame..
Adam felt a shiver run down his spine at the thought of how many moldy noodles and veggies he had to clean up, with the gazelle's help. Indeed, it was a battle between wit and insanity as he spent the day searching every nook and cranny for any wiff of spoiled Chinese food. Adam would never forget the moment Dan tripped and accidentally threw their take-out all over the room.
"We made a vow never to speak about that day, Jess," Adam replied as he made his way over to the kitchen and began to dig through the wooden cabinets to see if he put his bottle there by mistake while he was cooking. Adam always did have a habit of just putting everything that was around inside a cabinet.
After all, it did at least give the illusion that the area was clean.
After looking through the small cabinets above the stove, Adam was overjoyed when he saw the familiar bottle sitting lazily against the side. He grabbed it and gave it an overjoyed hug before placing it underneath the kitchen sink's faucet to fill the water bottle.
"You off to go work out again?" Jessica asked, raising an eyebrow as she continued to play her game. "You've been going an awful lot lately. I'm all for staying in shape, being a runner, but what gives? You finally accepting that you have feelings for that otter guy?" she added, turning her head to grin at Adam. He had regaled his roommate about Toby's numerous advances and ploys to try to get Adam to at least go on a date with him, and Jess always laughed at how adorable the otter was, proceeding to tell the deer that he should just go on the date already.
"No, nothing like that," the buck replied with a smirk as he watched the bottle fill to the brim. "I just need to pre-burn the calories I am going to drink tomorrow. Did you know Toby was a bartender at some club called the Foxhole Lounge? He offered me a few free drinks for...a favor," Adam continued as his ears turned a crimson red when he thought about the interaction between him and Toby a few days ago.
Jessica's slender ears perked up as she paused her game to grin at Adam knowingly, hopping up on the sofa cushion to look off the back of the couch at the deer. "And here you told me you adamantly refused to ever have sex with him, you naughty buck, you! Well? How was he? Are otters half as soft as I've heard?"
"I never had sex with him!" Adam exclaimed with an embarrassed laugh before quickly turning off the nozzle when the bottle started to overflow. "He just needed some clothes from me to get through the week. Nothing big like that," the buck lied as he screwed on the top of the bottle then unzipped a pouch on the duffel bag that was around his back, placing it inside.
The gazelle wasn't buying it. "Adam, I've known you for ten years, so believe me when I say that I know when you're lying to me." She hopped off the couch and approached her long-time best friend with a smirk. "C'mon, you don't need to be shy! Besides, you told me about that time you slept with that big panda guy who practically slobbered all over you after he fell asleep after you wo fucked, so how bad could this possibly be?"
"Oh my God, Jess. That was when I was like...ummm..."
Adam paused for a moment to think and walked over to the island in the middle of the kitchen to grab a small granola bar, unwrapping it.
"Actually, that was not too long ago, so I have nothing to say about that."
Jessica laughed as she sat up on the kitchen counter, swinging her long, graceful legs slightly. "That was literally last month, you big doofus! Or are you sleeping with a ton of guys and not telling me about it, causing them all to kinda blur together?" the gazelle winked, loving how much the deer was blushing.
"Ahh, forget you! You don't know me!" Adam said with a mock finger point as he began to make his way to the front door. The brown door out of the apartment looked like it had seen better days, but Adam was just grateful it locked. In fact, most of the apartment he was grateful for. Before he arrived to it, Jessica had made sure everything was in its rightful place, and the apartment had a mostly modern, refurbished look to it. She was even pretty lenient on rent.
"Yeah, yeah, princess," Jessica taunted jokingly. "Go lift your weights and bring back a prince charming this time! And bring one for me too! A straight one!" she added, remembering a time Adam had tried to set her up with a friend of his, only to find out the guy was completely gay, not bisexual like Adam had originally thought.
"Oh, come on, you have to admit that Conner was a good guy! He even brought snacks and wine," Adam mentioned with an innocent smile as he opened the door and stepped outside into the humid air. The temperature was warm, but the buck dressed appropriately in sweat-wicking gym shorts and a muscle shirt. The staff of the complex tried to keep everything cool, but nothing could stop humidity from leaking in. A window on the left side of the area was open, and hot air flowed in over the buck's fur, along with the clean smell of a summer rain behind it. By the door, a small metal identification plate had the number "321" written on it.
"HE THOUGHT HE WAS HERE TO GO ON A DATE WITH YOU, YOU DOOF!" the gazelle yelled after him as Adam shut the door.
"Well, maybe if I wasn't so hot, that wouldn't have happened," Adam commented to himself with a smug grin, and he put his finger on his bum before making a sizzling sound.
A split second after, Adam heard Jessica shout through the closed door, "I HEARD THAT!"
Adam's ears flattened, and a smirk crossed his face as he ran from the apartment door, chuckling, and towards the elevator. The apartment complex they were situated in was nice, but fairly expensive. Vases of flowers were set along the wall while serene pictures of nature lined the walls to give the environment a soothing feel. The three roommates, Dan, Adam, and Jessica, had to break up the rent between them, but for all three together, it was fairly affordable. With Jessica maintaining the local video game store, Dan working in a lab, and Adam working at the library, the rent got paid on time, and generally with a bit of spending money left over.
With a sharp ding, the elevator doors opened, and the buck left the lush red carpet to step on the blue tile of the elevator. His hooves hit the floor with a few clops as he stepped inside and pressed a round button that had the word "lobby" written in bold print below it. When Adam's finger hit the button, the door promptly closed as he felt his body propelled downward until, with another ding, the elevator was opened up into the lobby below.
Walking out of the elevator and down a short hallway until he was met by two more paths on his left and right, Adam glanced down both halls to see if anyone was coming. Rows of rooms could be seen on both sides, but all appeared to be quiet.
Walking straight ahead, the buck greeted the receptionist who jumped at his computer and greeted him back. The sound of cards being dealt could be heard, and the buck gave a chuckle. The snow leopard smiled coyly as he proceeded to exit out of whatever he was doing on the computer. The desk was made of a beautiful dark wood and looked to be well organized. A bell was set on top with a sign that read "Ring to notify the receptionist."
"Have a good day, sir," the snow leopard said as the buck made his way outside.
As Adam pushed open the double glass doors, beams of light hit him straight in the face. He squinted slightly as he walked on the warm sidewalk and shielded himself from a gust of wind that swept by. Several cars were parked near the apartment building, and there was a bit of activity as people went out and went in at a leisurely pace. Stretching, Adam sighed as he took a deep breath and made the hike over to the gym.
Luckily, it was only about a ten minute walk, and to Adam, it was always interesting to watch people go about their business.
Finally, Adam arrived at gym. Looking upwards, he smiled when he recognized the red lettering across the top of the two story building: "Xercise Central."
Walking through the red double doors and into the gym's lobby, Adam flashed his card to the receptionist. The lobby seemed to be clean and organized, and the receptionist desk had magazines close by, along with a waiting area where people could sit and chat. The receptionist was a husky, and her limber body seemed to radiate energy. Her blue, crystalline eyes creased as she smiled and said, "Please enjoy your time here at Xercise Central. Don't forget a towel!"
Adam thanked her and grabbed a towel that was laying on top of a neat stack of towels on a cart nearby before walking to the left and down the hallway to the men's locker room. The sound of metal pumping and grunts could be heard as he walked by the weight room. The smell of sweat and musk reached his nostrils, and he felt a sense of familiarity rush through him.
Opening up the door to the men's locker room, Adam strolled in as if he owned the place before finding his locker and opening it. The locker room was pretty empty with it being a Thursday at 3:30 in the afternoon. Most people were away at such an awkward time, but at least, for Adam, it gave him some peace. There were a couple of people changing or preparing themselves for a hard workout, but other than a handful of people, the locker room was empty. Glancing over to Toby's locker, the buck noticed it was closed and locked shut.
Placing the duffel bag down on a bench and changing out of his shorts and muscle shirt, Adam grabbed the swim trunks from his bag and slipped them over his hips. He emptied the pockets of his clothes and made sure to take the membership card out of his wallet before placing the rectangular piece of plastic in the pocket of his trunks. He adjusted himself and grabbed the goggles that were in the front pouch of his duffel bag before opening up his locker. He placed the goggles on top of his head and looked into a small mirror in the locker, his eyes glancing over his face casually as he wiped a speck of dirt off his right cheek. He chuckled as he remembered when his mom would lick her finger and come at his cheek if she noticed something on his face. The memory sent a warm feeling down his spine as he started to groom himself.
His brown eyes looked back at him in the mirror, and he stuck his tongue out as he adjusted the goggles on the top of his head. Before he left for the swimming pool, he wanted everything to be straight and orderly, from the top of his head to the tips of his toes; it was just the way he was. Adam then grabbed the duffel bag and pushed it inside the locker before closing it.
After he seemed to have everything in order, he made his way to the pool area and opened the door. The pool looked completely empty, save for a few splashes coming from the lane area. There were no instructors, kids, parents, or old people on the casual swimming side. The doberman lifeguard from before stood at the poolside with his whistle in his mouth as he watched over the lanes with a bored look across his face.
As Adam neared the lanes and the lifeguard, he saw a familiar bison swimming towards him for a moment before kicking off the side of the pool and swimming right back from where he came. The huge bovine's body swam down the lane with surprising speed, though perhaps it shouldn't have been terribly surprising, given the power that was clearly contained within that musclebound form.
"Hey there, Mr. Wueller," the doberman lifeguard smiled, looking less bored now that there was a new face at the pool. "Gonna swim laps again today?"
"Indeed, I am," Adam replied in a friendly tone as he reached into the pocket of his trunks and pulled out his membership card before handing it to the lifeguard. "It doesn't look like it has been very busy today for you."
The canine sighed. "You've no idea, dude. At least when there are classes and things, there's stuff to do, but during the afternoon, like this? I might as well bring a book. Not that I could anyway, since it's against the rules for me to not be watching the pool at all times. First-world problems, am I right?"
The deer chuckled and threw his towel to the side before diving into the water instead of edging himself in. The water felt great on his fur, and as the bubbles floated up to caress his body, he sighed in bliss and swam back up. Inhaling deeply before grabbing the wall and doing more stretches, the buck felt his limbs protest a bit more.
"Jess was right. I have been pushing myself more than usual," Adam thought to himself as he felt a muscle finally unwind itself in his leg. He cringed as he leaned down to massage his calf, kneading the knot out of the muscle. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see there was a figure barrelling its way towards him in the water. Adam could hear the sound of arms hitting water behind him, and he turned around to see a massive wall of water barreling down the lane towards him.
Adam had accidentally jumped into the bison's lane, and the other male was so focused on his swimming that he didn't even see the buck right in front of him. Barely two seconds later, the bison collided hard with the deer, both sinking down in the water in surprise in a tangle of limbs. Adam flailed about in the water as the bison's weight pushed him down, the other male still trying to figure out what the hell he just hit, and that answer came just a split second later when one of Adam's prongs slashed across the bison's chest, sending bubbles flying out of the other male's mouth as his eyes widened in pain, screaming silently under the water, the bison kicking off of Adam to get away from whatever just injured him. The water in the immediate area took on a slightly red hue before dispersing into the pool. He pulled himself up out of the water, clutching his bleeding chest as the lifeguard ran over with a first aid kit.
Adam, a bit dazed, surfaced and shakily lifted himself up and out of the pool to sit on the edge. Looking behind him, he noticed the wall that ran into him leaning on the lifeguard for support and grimacing in noticeable pain.
Running over, Adam quickly started to shake in fear and stammered, "F-fuck. I d-didn't know. I didn't..."
"What the fuck, dude!?" the bison roared, the thicker, darker fur on his chest matted with blood. The wound wasn't easily visible, but it was clearly a decent sized one, based off how much the bovine was bleeding. "You clearly saw me in that lane before you hopped in, so why the hell were you there!? Ow!" he growled as the lifeguard dabbed an antiseptic solution onto the gash.
"Calm down, Mr. Karsen. It was an honest mistake, I'm sure," the doberman said soothingly as he made sure the cut was cleaned out properly.
Staying silent, Adam was visibly shaken. His eyes raced from the wound to the blood that caked the bison's fur, and he felt so small and insignificant. He wanted to say something, but he felt the words he reached for were so far off that he ended up just standing there silently. His head throbbed, and he felt somewhat ill. The voice of the bison still bounced around in his skull.
"Is there...is there anything I can do?" Adam managed to force out of himself as he walked closer to the duo, slowly.
The lifeguard didn't look up as he replied, "Grab me the gauze out of the first aid kit, would you?"
"I can do that. Give me a moment," Adam answered back shakily as he made his way to the first aid kit and grabbed the small bag of what appeared to look like thin cotton strips.
Accepting the gauze from the deer, putting a glob of Neosporin on it, and then pressing it to the bison's thickly muscled chest softly, the doberman grabbed some surgical tape and began putting strips of the tape over the gauze to hold it in place, the tape quickly becoming stuck to the thick, shaggy fur underneath it. "Do you want me to call an actual doctor to have them look at you, or do you think you'll be okay, Mr. Karsen?" the doberman lifeguard asked, still holding the gauze on the bison's chest.
The massive bovine huffed. "I'll be fine. Just hurts like a bitch...Watch where you're going next time, buck!" he rumbled, locking eyes with Adam. Gone was the shy demeanor he had exhibited the previous time they had met, now replaced by an extreme annoyance and anger.
"Y-yes, sir. I apologize," the buck said with a polite bow.
Adam was done shaking since he got out of the the fire, but the gaze that the bison bore into him was one that seemed to bottle up the rage just barely below the surface. Although the buck was thankful he did not get his face smashed in, Adam knew he was not out of hot water yet, as the bison gave a snort in his general direction.
Taking a deep breath to try to calm himself, the bison just grumbled. "It's alright, just be more careful next time. Swimming with antlers like those, they're practically daggers in the water, and you're lucky you didn't blind me or something, dude. Otherwise, we'd have bigger issues than a gash on my chest."
"I..." Adam paused as he felt a lump in his throat, but cleared it quickly. "If it means anything at this moment, is there anything I can do to help you?"
The bison sighed heavily. "I dunno...maybe go get me an 'I'm sorry' smoothie from the juice bar?"
"I didn't know a flavor like that existed, but I am willing to spare a bit of change for one, big guy," Adam said with a chuckle as he felt his mood lighten up a bit.
His frown easing up slightly, the bison looked at Adam with a much less annoyed expression. "Strawberry, banana, pineapple, please."
"Deal. Are you still going to be swimming after this?" the buck asked as he began to walk away from the group and grabbed his towel.
"Nah...I'm probably just gonna be done for the day, after that," the bison replied after sighing again.
"Alright. I'll grab you something to drink, and I can give yo-"
Right when Adam was about to finish his sentence, he felt a muscle in his leg pull, and he nearly tripped as a cramping pain shot through him. Adam's eyes began to water, and he winced as he stopped in his tracks. They were both a mess; the bison being stabbed, and Adam pulling a muscle in his leg.
Turning around, the deer covered up his embarrassment with a feigned smile. "I think I better take the day off too. I'll wait for you outside the locker room."
"Okay, I'll be there," the bison replied, wincing as he touched his gauze bandage.
"Are you alright, Mr. Wueller?" the lifeguard asked, noticing that Adam was in pain.
"Oh, it's nothing," Adam said with a nervous laugh as he walked off the tightening that was happening in his quads. "It seems to just be a cramp. I am perfectly fine!"
"I should have totally listened to Jess," Adam said to himself as her words echoed around in his head.
"You've been going an awful lot lately. I'm all for staying in shape, being a runner, but what gives?"
Adam grabbed his towel and awkwardly shuffled his way towards the locker room. Opening up the door with his shoulder, the deer wrapped the towel around his waist. The locker room was beginning to get busier as more patrons of the gym lined the lockers, and the soft hum of small talk filled the room.
Getting to his locker, Adam dried himself off and noticed his fur poofed up. Toby always gave him shit for his fur. He would giggle and tease Adam for decades to come about the time when he dried himself off after showering, and his hair stood straight up on end, making him look like a cotton ball with antlers.
Grumbling as he opened up his locker and searched for a comb to brush his fur, the buck sighed contently when he found the comb in the appropriate pouch close to the back of the duffel bag. The comb was nothing special, its metallic black shining in the artificial light of the locker room.
"At least I put that in the right place," Adam muttered to himself with a small smile. Running the comb through his fur, he groomed himself appropriately; even using the mirror on his locker to admire his form.
He combed his hair to the side and struck a pose like he was a suave gentleman asking for a drink. His white-furred chest puffed out in response, and his cream-colored biceps flexed as he leaned into the mirror to further comb his hair until he was content.
Adam then began to work off his trunks until he was naked. His thighs, the same color as his chest, bulged with lean muscle, and he turned around to admire his backside with his tail flagged high, revealing the white underside.
"I don't look half-bad. The workouts having been doing wonders," Adam whispered to himself with a giggle. "I am acting like I'm going out on my first date." It was strange for Adam's mood to change from horror to flirtatious, but here he was grooming himself once again just to buy a guy a smoothie.
Adam imagined the bison in his tiny speedo, running to him and hugging him in an embrace as Adam handed him the smoothie, the large behemoth smothering him in his hulking muscles and beautifully-crafted chest.
Sucking in a small amount of drool that began to make its way from his lips, he shook his head and changed into his muscle shirt and shorts that he had worn to the gym before running out of the locker room and towards the juice bar.
He realized that he was still furiously combing his body when he made it into the lobby, and the gym receptionist stared at him curiously. Adam was too intent on making himself look presentable for the bison that he didn't care about the strange look he was given at grooming himself in public.
"Jesus, it's nothing like that...Just get the smoothie, and go," Adam said as he smacked himself mentally and pocketed the comb.
The bar was bright and well-lit, and different people stood around and talked amongst themselves. Most of the customers around the bar looked like they just finished a workout, while others still had the determined look across their faces and a towel over their neck, as if any second they would jump off their seat and start doing pushups in the middle of the floor. The sweet scent of fruit reached the buck's nose, and he licked his lips. The scent was fresh and tropical; it slightly reminded the deer of his mother's perfume. An obnoxiously large orange was over the top of the bar, and large letters carved into the plastic fruit read "Juiced".
There was no line to the cashier, and the transaction went by pretty quick. He slapped down the five dollars for a generously sized smoothie and made his way back to the entrance of the locker room. The bison was already there, waiting for him with his arms crossed as he leaned against the wall, looking bored as he admired the concrete floor. He wore baggy, tan cargo pants and a fairly ugly-looking, grey sweatshirt that looked like it had seen better days.
"Here is your smoothie," Adam exclaimed happily as he handed the bison the frozen beverage. "Hopefully there are no hard feelings," the buck added as he gave the other male a warm smile. He then adjusted his hair as quickly as possible, a blush crossing his face as he stopped midway and forced his hands down to his sides where they couldn't reach up to mess with anything.
The bison looked up from the spot on the floor he was staring at and gave the deer the smallest of smiles as he accepted the smoothie from Adam. "Thank you," he replied before taking a long sip and sighing contentedly. "And don't worry about it."
"I'm glad," Adam said as he leaned against the wall casually. "So, what else do you do besides swim? I've been here for a while, but I hadn't seen you around until you picked up my goggles a while back."
The larger male took a moment to drink more of his smoothie before responding. "I generally focus on lifting, but I like swimming because I enjoy just being alone with my thoughts."
"I can see the lifting works well for you," Adam was about to flirt, but caught himself and began to cough to cover up the sentence he was about to blurt. When he noticed the bison's expression didn't really change, he cleared his throat and said, "I enjoy swimming for that reason too. Of course, deer don't often stick me in the chest to interrupt my thoughts," the buck joked.
Rolling his eyes, the bison chuckled softly. "That was definitely a first," he said, taking another long sip of the smoothie. "Just don't make it a habit. I don't like being perforated."
"Of course not, big guy," Adam said with a smile, "So...what's your name? I remember I told you mine, so I feel I should at least know yours, right?" the buck smirked with a flash of flirtiness in his eyes.
The bison began looking uncomfortable for some reason. "My name's Lance," he replied shortly as he shifted his weight from hoof to hoof awkwardly. "I forgot yours. Sorry."
Not really focusing on the fact that the bison forgot his name, Adam chuckled, and he extended his hand. "A shy bison hunk? Oh, I thought I would never see the day," Adam thought to himself.
"A pleasure to meet you, Lance. My name is Adam."
Lance looked at the buck's hand like it was a venomous snake for a moment before slowly reaching out to shake Adam's hand firmly, perhaps a little too firmly, displaying just how much raw strength was actually housed within that massive body.
Feeling the pressure around his paw grow, Adam tried to hold back any signs of pain and simply kept up a smile that was slowly starting to break. His right eye twitched visibly as the pressure became a bit too much. "You have quite a manly handshake," Adam said as his eye slightly twitched, and he gave a forced laugh.
The bison quickly released Adam's hand, withdrawing it quickly and stuffing it into his sweatshirt pocket. "Erm...thanks? Anyway, I need to get going. Thanks for the smoothie," Lance said, holding up the beverage.
"Oh, umm, no problem! Have a good one!" the buck said as he looked at his watch and realized he had only been at the gym for thirty minutes, doing nothing, and had broke more of a sweat from flirting than jogging for five minutes. Lance turned and walked away briskly, clopping across the concrete floor with heavy hoof falls.
"That went smooth. Good one, Adam," he chided himself sarcastically as he walked out of the gym lobby and began his walk back to the apartment. "'You have such a manly handshake?' Really? You might as well have leaned down and given him a blowjob right there, you awkward buck."
Looking up, he noticed there were storm clouds on the horizon, and the smell of rain was even more prominent in the air. The wind started to pick up, and Adam realized that, if he wanted to walk back to the apartment, and make it back dry, he better walk quick. Adam could feel the rain start to fall onto his shirt, and he tried to shield his head from the impending rain.
