Shell-shocked Zack stood still his mind a whirl of emotions. It was difficult to grasp the enormity of what he had just done. While he stood dumbfounded he felt warm surrounding him and he looked down to see Qerry hugging him tightly. A paw squeezed his shoulder and he realised Reggie, Kelo and Reese were standing by ready to help their friend. Their faces were a mask of concern, he returned the hug tightly a few tears falling down his cheeks. While Deju barked out orders the rabbit was surrounded by his friends. He knew he would chose to stay with them, to the bitter end if need be.

Their cause was just and if he could only survive and if by some miracle they could save the colonies he would take Qerry home. He would stand proudly before his parents and work hard to repay every penny he stole. He kissed the panda on the forehead and smiled as Qerry kissed his neck.

"You ok Zack?" Reggie asked breaking the group's silence.

"Yeah, I just never thought I'd be here, I never thought I would ki..."

"You didn't kill those people, Deju did. Do you blame a gun for shooting someone, or the gunmaker? it was the person who pulled the trigger who is responsible." Reggie cut across him firmly. "Those deaths are on his conscience not yours, you gave him a weapon he chose to use it. You saved us all and because you did, because of what he did; maybe, just maybe, we can save our homes and put an end to the Elitists control of the colonies."

The rabbit didn't reply he absorbed the words and then he held onto his love tightly and hoped someday he would believe the hyena. What he really needed was time to process, but time was a valuable finite resource and he had just ran out.

"Where the bloody hell is my engineering team?" Deju bellowed from the entrance to the cargo bay. The firey fox sped across towards them. " Come on we have to secure the ship. Kelo get your team to the engine room we need to get underway as soon as possible. Qerry you are with me, we need to hack the computer on the bridge, I promise time to cuddle with your boyfriend later. Reggie take Qeith and watch over the engineering team. Remember there may be survivors in the crew. Take them alive if possible, put them into an escape pod... there's been enough death today."

For the first time Zack heard the regret in the fox's voice. As the others began to get ready to move the rabbit found the fox looking at him. Deju leaned closer and said, "if there had been another way, to save my crew and my people, I would have taken it. I am not a bad man, there was just no way, not without losing most of my crew, and my friends. I had to do it. I hope you understand someday... I hope someday I will forgive myself. Now get to work or it will have all been for nothing."

The rabbit shared a soft loving kiss with Qerry, the panda whispered soft comforting words to him. Then with a tender embrace and an "I love you," he left for the bridge. A few minutes later the engineers left.

Reggie and Qieth took point, weapons at the ready. Kelo followed behind them. Reese hung back with Zack and the rabbit was grateful for his presence. The racoon reaching out with his paw often to reassure the rabbit. The engine room was a mess, Zack's distraction had worked well and the evidence of the detonation was everywhere. The three man team was less than one tenth the ship's normal engineering crew. However, they were smart and determined.

Working on the repairs gave Zack a wonderful distraction. He knew it would take years to recover from what happened, but with his friends and love beside him he knew he would pull through. As reports came in from the bridge he realised Deju had been right about the pirate fleet. They had confirmed reports of dozens of ships destroyed or taken. Whatever happened next things would have to change. The colonies fate now rested with one small pirate crew.

After a few hours Kelo told the rabbit to get some rest. The hyperdrive was repaired and the destroyer lurched into hyperspace. Qerry sent a comm message asking the rabbit what he wanted to do next.

Zack badly wanted to spend time with Qerry. however, he found his mind returning to the human who had helped him escape. Dillon, the human would still be out cold in the room and he worried that the kind man would wake alone. He also wondered about Shep, he had left him in the medbay with the ship's doctor. He wondered if anyone had had a moment to go and check on the wounded canine.
