Ch.1 The Encounter
"It has always been the same for centuries in this world. Creatures that have a body like a human but a head and tail like a canine or a cat, they can move swiftly and are built stronger than even 3 of our best hunters. These bests are the rulers the lands and find humans to be fun game and slaves." An old elder said as he sits in front of a fire and looks at the young humans gathered around. "We don't know what they are properly called so we just call them Furs. They raid villages and kill all they see in their path and the ones that try to run away are the ones that they chase after and make them slaves."
Everyone was paying very close attention as the old man continued his lesson except for one human who seems to be lost in thought. "We cannot say where they came from but what we do know is that you should always be on your guard when you go out into the woods for they are masters at tracking and they can also see almost twice as good as we can even at night." Most of the children seemed scared from the tail but the elder smiled.
One of the boys raised his hand and got the elders attention. "Yes."
The boy stood and looked at the old man. "Marcos, sir but they do exist right?" Everyone started to laugh at him making the young boy feel embarrassed. The only one who wasn't paying attention looked at the young boy who was standing then focused his attention on Marcos as if he wasn't daydreaming at all.
The elder's smile faded. "Yes they do but I wouldn't worry too much about them..." Marcos leaned back in a huge chair and started to scratch at his beard. "Those beasts haven't been seen in these parts since my grandfather's father."
Marcos noticed that all the young humans have relaxed a little but are anxious to leave. "OK that's all for now. You can all go." Everyone got up and scattered out of the cabin and was laughing and playing. Marcos walled out of the cabin and looked at the small village that was home to less than 120 humans. They were all living at the base of a mountain near a forest where they can find game and a river 200 yard away for fish and clean water.
As Marcos was walking through the village when he noticed the only one person that wasn't paying attention to his lesson walking through town with his best friend Alsea. He knew the two teens very well. Kyo was about 18 summers now but had lost both parents. His dad was a respected man and was seen as the best hunter the village had at the time but he had died when Kyo was only 10. His dad was in a hunting party and had accidently encountered a bear and her cubs. The party didn't want to kill the animals for the cubs looked fairly young but the bear noticed them and attacked the party. It went after the youngest member of the group and was on its hind legs and ready to swipe at him. Unfortunately Kyo's father in between the two to save the young man but he didn't survive when the big animal had swiped and hit him in the head. His mom was a beautiful woman that had died a year later during the winter of illness. Ever since then Kyo has been living in the small cabin alone. The elder has taken the responsibility to look after the young boy till he thinks he is ready to take care of himself.
Alsea is a beautiful female teen that has been friends with Kyo ever since they were a couple of summers old. She is a red head girl with blue eyes and a thin body but enough muscle to show all that she is more than capable of house work. Everyone in the village thinks that the two will most likely marry each other for how long they have been around together.
"Hey Kyo." The elder called out. Kyo turned and looked to see the old man walking up to him. "Going to go collect wood today right?"
"Yes sir," Kyo lifted the Ax with his right hand and rested it on his shoulder. "They said that it's going to be a cold night. So I figured a little more wood for the fire won't hurt."
Marcos looked at the boy who stood about 5'8 and had a little muscle to him from living alone and having to cut wood to repair the cabin and for the fire. He had black hair that only came down into a pony tail that reached his shoulders. Staring back at him were dark brown eyes which you can barely see the pupils. Even though he looked like he can take care of himself he was still a young boy that still needed someone there for him. The elder smiled and pat Kyo on the head, Kyo looked to the ground and blushed a little but soon moved away and started to the woods. "Hey," the Elder shouted making him stop once more "Don't stay out too late its going to be dark soon."
Kyo nodded his head "Yeah I know."
Marcos looked down at Alsea and nodded. She took a small bow and the two walked off passed the elder. The elder looked up to the sky and smiled and said to himself. ‘Things is always going to be good here.' unaware that a set of eyes was watching the village from a cliff nearby. The creature looked to a few others behind him. "Get ready." They all nodded and ran off to the others nearby.
.................................................
It was almost sun set when Kyo was out in the woods chopping up the last tree that he had cut down on a ridge until he had enough wood that should last him through the night. He started to tie the pieces of wood together when he heard someone scream. Kyo stood up and looked around to see if he can see where it was coming from. It wasn't long till he heard another scream followed by another. Soon all he heard was yelling, screaming, and to his surprise howling. Since he was up high up in the mountain a little it was easy for him to see the black smoke coming from the village when he looked in that direction. Kyo immediately dropped the pile of wood and grabbed his ax and rushed to the village.
It took him almost 20 minutes to get to the village and when he got there he couldn't believe what he saw. Half the village was on fire and people were running around but mostly in his direction some had bows and small axes but what really caught his attention was what jumped out of a window and landed in a crouching poison. Kyo thought it was nothing but a dog until it stood up, just like how the elder explained it, like a human. Kyo noticed it had a head and tail like a wolf but it was standing at least 6 foot 5 and had paints on. The wolf was also wearing an armor plate over his right shoulder and what looked like a sling but couldn't see it well from the fire behind him. Kyo noticed another one walked up behind him and as he looked around he noticed that they were all over, he could guess at least 4 dozen wolves where here destroying the village.
The wolf reached behind him and gripped something but Kyo couldn't make it out until the wolf moved forward quickly and slashed down on a human almost cutting him in half. Kyo looked horrified as the wolf stood and looked at his direction then lifted his sword towards the direction where they were running. "You know the deal...kill all the men but leave the woman and children alone." The wolf shouted. The rest of the wolves lined up with their swords in their paws. "Go." Was the only word shouted for the massacre to begin.
It happened so fast that Kyo didn't know what to do. He stood there froze when the wolves started to kill the men of his village. He watched one stabbed one of his friends threw the back and another got his head chopped off. He wanted to do something but he was just too scared and shocked to even move
One wolf was running to him and was about to kill him. The huge wolf toward over him and had the look that was filled with coldness and hatred. "Kyo run." Came from a villager as the man tried to tackle the wolf. But the wolf was just too big and strong. When the human didn't bring to the wolf to the ground he wrapped his arms around the wolf to try and lift him and slam it to the ground but couldn't even make the creature move. The wolf let out a loud laugh as he gripped the man throat and started to lift him off the ground. Kyo tried to move his ax and try to help his fellow villager but his body just didn't want to react like he wanted it to. The wolf's smile turned angry as he pulled his fist back and punched the man in the face so hard that it looked like half of the man's face came off. Kyo stood there as the wolf tossed the body to the side and brought out his sword.
"Your turn is next." The wolf said as he lifted his sword in the air. "Time to send you to your maker." And was about to bring his sword down until a arrow struck him in the head.
"Kyo move it now!" Kyo watched the wolf fall backwards motionless and he turned to see Marcos with a bow. The elder quickly raised it and drew another arrow and amid it right at Kyo. "Down." Was all he said and Kyo fell to the floor, the elder shot the arrow to a wolf that what standing behind Kyo since he was looking the other way. It struck the wolf in the chest just below the armor plate. He fell down on the ground as well but he wasn't dead, Kyo stood up and was looking down at the wolf. "Kyo!"
Kyo regained his thoughts and turned to ran to the elder. "What the hell is going on?"
"There here for us." Marcos said. "You need to run."
"No I'm not leaving." Kyo said as he brought up his ax.
"Don't be stupid boy." Marcos turned and started to run while pulling Kyo by his shirt's collar. "You are too young to fight and die. There is too many of them and they are too strong for hand to hand combat so you need to go now."
"What about you?" Kyo asked as they where weaving through the remains of the village. Kyo watched as he ran seeing the wolves grabbing the woman and young children by the throat and dragging them back from where they ran from. But they saw dead bodies all over as they reached the edge of the village.
Marcos pulled him in front of him and shoved him by his back making him stumbled a bit. "Don't worry about me now get moving before they see you. You have 50 yard till the forest so move your ass."
Kyo started to strain from having tears roll down his face. But did as he was told and regained his balance to just take off running for the woods. He was supprised that he made it without anyone seeing him but was sad that it looked like that he was the only one who made it out. He kept running until he found a small spot where he thought he would be safe. That moment he would never forget what he seen, the village was engulfed in flame, standing near the edge of the burning houses the wolves was standing around one person with a bow in his right hand and who seemed to be the last except for the women and young children hiding near the woods. He stood there to watch as the wolves picked up their swords and got ready to attack. The man quickly lifted his bow but got it up only half way till the wolves all had their swords threw him. Kyo quickly looked away as he knew that that man was Marcos that was being stabbed. As he looked back at the lifeless body he started to feel the tears he tried to hold back fall down his face. He looked as he recognized one of the wolves that order the attack for one got his attention and they all looked in his direction and him plus 6 others took off in his direction.
"Fuck!" He shouted when he seen the seven of them running his way. He couldn't see that well for the sun had already gone down but he kept running. He didn't stop until he reached the shore of the river and turned to follow it down stream. As he was running he could hear the wolf running after him.
"You're ours you little shit." He heard one yell.
"You have nowhere to go." Called out another
Kyo didn't care all he knew was that he had to get away from them but he remembered what the elder said to him about how they can see better than they can and knew that they would be catching up to him very soon . He was running along the shore when he tripped.
"You're ours now kid." One of them yelled as he heard them pick up their speed to catch him. He got up as quickly as he could until he could heard what was in front of him but he decided that that was going to have to be his only option to lose them. He came up to a water fall and stood on the edge.
"Nowhere to go." Kyo turned around and seen that the wolves caught up to him easily. As they all stood there he noticed that unlike him none of them was breathing heard. He saw the one that has ordered the attack start to slowly step forward and stuck out his paw. "Come on lets go. We are not going to hurt you." Kyo didn't buy that statement one bit and took a step backwards where a few pebbles fell over the side. "Hey kid you don't want to do that ok. Just come with us and you'll be all right." He took a small step forward.
Kyo noticed that none of the wolves had a weapon on them and from as much as he could see that they all didn't look like they were going to hurt him but his mind was made up. Kyo moved closer to the falls and closed his eyes and jumped backward and off the side. "NO!!!" the wolf yelled as he ran towards the edge and look over the edge in time to catch the kid to disappear in the water. The wolf turned to the others and looked each one in the eyes he pointed to the one on the end. "Go back to the others and tell them to go back to camp and take only half the women and children." The wolf bowed and took off running back to the village. "The rest of you lets head down stream and see if we can find him." They all nodded and set off down the side of the cliff and down the side of the river to find the only male human that got away.
