* stands for thoughts, and thinking.
Another tip...I don't think there is a town in Alaska called Valtu.. I made it up.
~{{ Lakeside View in Valtu, small town 200 miles outside Juno Alaska }}~
Fog coated the lake below the parking spaces just above, with only one lone car sitting silently in the space the engine shut off for some time but still heat vapors raised up from the hood into the crisp Fall air. Over near the low rock wall stood a young man dressed in lose fitting blue jeans, a black T-shirt and a black leather jacket...his dirty blonde hair coming down to the middle of his neck as he looked out at the fog, leaning softly upon the wall.
"Why am I here? Back at this town...these memories. Are you really here, Sasha?" he sighed softly standing up fully while tossing a small rock off into the mist before turning back around to look at his car then back to the town that could barely be seen in nothing more than a silhouette.
Closing his eyes he shook his head making his way to the steps that led down to the path along the lake that bordered the line of trees that climbed up the hill, his boots thudding softly against the ground as he fallowed the path.
Not really paying any mind to the area around him, too far lost in thought till a sound caused him to stop...he then looked around some till his gaze shifted out to the lake then the sound came again like someone walking through thick mud.
He could feel his heartbeat pick up quickly till the sound stopped, looking around once more waiting for it...soon convincing himself it was his mind playing games he kept on walking soon finding himself in the back alley into town.
"Hmm...I don't remember this but of course I ain't been here in years." he shrugged moving on down the path and soon found himself in the middle of a street...the fog made it hard to really see but he soon noticed that there was no movement at all besides his own breath in the air and the soft breeze that flowed down the empty streets. "This is odd." he looked around once more then moved on down the street till he stopped in front of a streak of red on the road curving around a turn onto the next road over. Tilting his head, he fallowed the blood trail silently before it disappeared under a door into a club...he then made his way up to the door opening it up slowly only stopping when the musty air inside assaulted him.
"Ugh...seams no one has been in here for some time." he shook his head pushing his way inside finding the room was dark besides the steady beam of light coming from the top of the bar from a small clip-on flashlight, and a few lone lamps and neon signs. Picking up the flashlight he shined it around the room finding much of nothing un-till a shuffling sound came from behind him...he then turned around slowly only to come face to face with a creature that stood half a head higher than he did, its skin dark gray and slick with some kind of film, its head held no real features besides two black eyes inset into its skull.
He then started to back up slowly as it shambled toward him though neglected of arms it wasn't hampered in its mobility, soon it was upon him in a matter of seconds but was soon sent stumbling backwards when a glass ashtray slammed into its skull. Now backing away from the creature he glanced around for something else to use...soon picking up a pool-cue from its rack on the wall he spun it around slightly holding it ready, watching and waiting till the creature got close once more before lashing out with the stick, slamming it into the things head busting the end of the stick and having not the desired effect on its target.
"Ah shit...not good." he stepped back slightly then in a last ditched effort he rammed the broken end of the pool-cue into its chest, rewarded when it fell upon its back in a seizure fit before it went still as a small pool of blood formed under it.
Moving slowly to the body he nudged it slightly with his boot, the light shining off its body slightly due to the unknown film on it. "It is dead? What is it?" he tilted his head some before he pulled the makeshift spear from the creature and went back to his search through the club for a more...Suitable...weapon.
Moving around the bar he came upon a small rosewood box tucked away behind a few bottles...slowly he then picked up the box blowing the dust off it as he sat it down upon the bar.
"Hmm. What's this.?" he then unhooked the small latch and opened the box slowly to find a nickel plated .357 revolver tucked away in the red velvet cloth along with a small box of ammo. "Why hello there..." he grinned slowly picking up the revolver checking it over slowly then loaded it, finding out the bullets were hallow point rounds with custom cuts across the tips to maximize damage done from impact and mushrooming.
Slipping the revolver in his jacket pocket and the remaining bullets into the zippered pocket on the inside of his jacket as-well. Now with a slightly more useful weapon he walked out of the club only to find he was now surrounded by the unknown creatures like in the club.
"Oh isn't this just lovely." he half sighed.
He looked around slightly as they got closer to him, he knew that he didn't have the ammo to waste...so steeling himself he lunged at the closest one knocking it over into the crowd making a escape path, he then took off in a sprint down the street as far as he could before he slid to a stop on lose asphalt sending small chunks of the road cascading down into the fogy abyss. Oh this surely wasn't good for him at all...turning around he noticed that nothing was behind him oddly, so he started making his way back down the road before he noticed the creatures were still standing silently where he once was as if in a trance. Moving to the far side of the street he walked silently past them rewarded with the fact they paid no mind to him at all...surely they must have ears or can feel the slight vibrations but still they didn't make a move toward him.
Taking the blessed way out he got as far from the club as he could, turning down another street making his way silently aimlessly to wherever his heart was pulling him, guiding him to the unknown key to the darkness inside his head that plagued him since the death of his girlfriend Sasha three years ago.
~{{ Three years ago at Valtu Hospital }}~
"You can't die on me Sasha...the doctors said they have another test that might cure you..."
"Hah...don't be like that Michael...there's nothing they can do, I can feel my body starting to weaken more. Its just my time to go that's all..." spoke a young female husky laying in a hospital bed, her eyes were a ice blue but had lost there shine over the time being on the drugs the doctors gave her nearly every week, even her fur had withered into a dull coat of black and white, having a two tone effect around her face, not having a mask like most but a beautiful blend that came in splotches and stripes along her muzzle, cheeks and between her eyes...her body looking frail and brittle like a dead and decaying twig...it was painful.
"I wish I could help more Sasha...I feel useless..." he sighed, dark circles under his bloodshot eyes showing he had a major lack of sleep, his hair was a mess, but he still looked nice...his hand gripping the husky's paw firmly, afraid to let her go.
"There's nothing you can do...nothing anyone can do for that matter my love...just remember...no matter what I will always love you."
~{{ Main-street of Town }}~
Michael walked silently down the street holding his head some trying to remember what happened after those words but his mind wouldn't let him even start to see anymore of it.
Sighing softly he kept walking...pushing on into the fog, the mist, the pain and torture his life gave, and the mystery of what really happened inside that hospital room that was so bad it blocked its way from his mind in nothing but a black and dark haze. It hurt...like someone ripped his heart out and drove a spike through it. Though the thoughts and feelings of that very thing was fake, the pain was real...god was it ever so real you could just taste the blood.
*Bring me back to the town you took me to on our first date, take me back there someday...to that spot where we were happy...Im waiting for you there, that one spot.* he looked up some at the faceless sky "To that spot...this town "was" our spot...nothing about it didn't make us happy...but..." he looked down a street to his left some "Could she have meant the docks? We...we had our first kiss there under the full moon...".
He turned down the street making his way down to the docks near the lake but soon was cut short finding himself in a dead-end alley...he looked around before something brushed against his legs causing him to spin around looking around finding nothing behind him.
Slowly he pulled the revolver from his pocket while glancing back at the high stone wall trying to think if he took the wrong turn or not...pulling out a small town map from another pocket he found that he was on the right street but what surprised him was that the street didn't have any dead ends and if it did the map would have shown because it was brand new and came with a letter with no return address and Sasha's writing.
If it wasn't for that one letter with the request to come to the town he would have tossed it in the trash and went on with his life but something just pulled him to go.
Soon a crash came from beside him causing him to spin around nearly dropping his gun seeing nothing but a brick wall of the building beside him, he started to step back slowly till something caught his foot sending him tumbling down a flight of unseen stairs. When he hit the bottom he hit hard, sliding through a puddle and hitting his back against another stone wall.
Opening his eyes slowly he saw raindrops pepper the ground softly, rhythmic almost as if a song was playing out through the soft rumble of thunder overhead.
Getting up with a slight groan he was amazed that he still had the revolver still in his hand...he then looked around slowly, the sky had gotten slightly dark, or was he in a cellar...but...if he was, where was the rain coming from? No he couldn't be, even as he looked up the way he came down no light had shone down inside so he had to be still outside but now the question was...Where?
He rubbed the back of his head with another groan...he was sure going to have a headache later on in time if he was able to dodge a concussion. Slowly he switched on the pocket light he had on his jacket before he started to walk deeper into the darkness, he came up to a chain-link fence that had to be about nine foot high, rusted wire, poles and chains hung around, giving him cold accusing stares that made him take a involuntary step back only to bump into something that was around maybe hip high.
Turning around slowly the beam of light landed upon the form of a young female husky, matching the same fur, eyes and posture as his late girlfriend.
Michael couldn't bring himself to speak at first, looking over the young pup in front of him till it spoke softly in a voice he recognized in a instant...Sasha's voice!
"Are you lost?"
Taking a look around after her question the young husky gave a nod.
"You must be lost...come on...we must go before "They" show up." she said walking past Michael and down the caged path.
Michael blinked some and fallowed her. "Who's "They", and who are you?" he asked while glancing behind himself from time to time before he stopped just before he bumped into her, watching as she stood there looking around quickly.
"Sa..." she stopped for a second before speaking once more "My name is Sara."
Soon a crash came from behind them fallowed by a ungodly scream causing both of them to turn around to see over a dozen pare of glowing yellow eyes behind them.
"We got to go...NOW!" Sara yelled before taking off down the maze of paths.
Michael fallowed her close behind best he could, turning this way and that, dodging and jumping over and under obstacles before a shadow appeared in front of him.
He tried to stop in time but ended up slamming into the object sending him flying into the ground and sliding to a stop...oh this was bad...very very bad.
He then saw Sara standing near a corner looking back at him with sorrow in her eyes.
"SARA!!!"
All he saw was her tail disappearing around the corner before he rolled over just in time to see one of the shadows jump on him...he let out a yell of both rage and shock before darkness took him...soon a feeling washed through his body...so warm...so soft...so...Small?
The world came back slowly, nothing but a gray haze in his mind before settling out into shapes and colors.
The first color was a deep red, at first he thought he was bleeding but upon looking to the side he noticed the red blended in with a beautiful sky blue wallpaper with white clouds.
Michael moved to get up but the weight on him stopped his movements to look down and see the very same husky from the maze, laying on-top of him curled up and clinging to him...god...just the same...the same way Sasha used to hold him during a horror movie.
His movements woke Sara...slowly she sat up with a yawn and a canine stretch before looking down at him with beautiful blue eyes, her curled tail wagging slowly behind her as her ears perked forward.
"Oh you're awake...good. I thought they killed you."
Michael groaned slightly and closed his eyes. "You're not the only one...what the hell was they?" he opened his eyes too look at the husky who now sat silent on his stomach with her head down low and her ears pinned back against her head.
"I don't really know...they come out and search during the dark hours...I've never really understood them but I do know not many have lived past there onslaught of pain." she looked at him silently before she latched onto him in a hug, holding him close before she started to whimper softly...her body shaking like a leaf on a tree about to be ripped away by a strong gust. "I'm so sorry."
Michael blinked some, holding the young husky close stroking her back and her ears before closing his eyes.
"Shhh...it's okay...I doubt you could have done anything even if you wanted...you would have been killed if you did." he tried to comfort her as she kept shaking before soon she licked his chin.
"I'll be by your side from now on..." she looked up at him nuzzling her muzzle up under his chin softly before she got up standing on the bed now as she tilted her head and jumped off landing gracefully on the floor. "I'm ready when you are.".
Now that Michael could see better in the light that came from a small lamp he saw that Sara stood there in a short green skirt, and a blue sweater...he also noticed the small red ribbon tied to the tuff of white fur that puffed out from the low cut neck of the sweater.
The fact that she was so cute, he couldn't understand why she was out here all alone in this town full of monsters.
"Sara...why are you here?" he tilted his head some looking at her carefully while he waited for her answer, watching as she lowered her head some as a single lone tear rolled down her cheek before she then looked at him...pain and sadness in her eyes as she wrapped her arms around herself and her tail around her leg.
"Mommy and Daddy disappeared into the darkness..."
Moving from the bed slowly he kneeled down upon one knee and place one hand softly upon her shoulder, while he softly stroked the tear from her cheek with the thumb of his other.
"The same ones who attacked us?"
Sara gave a soft nod, sniffling softly before she looked at him with those big blue eyes that could bring anyone to there knees in a instant and rule them with ease. It was clear to see she was on the verge of a breakdown, her lower lip quivering, as she fought to keep from bursting into a fit of tears. Soon Michael took her into his arms holding her close, embracing her in nothing but love, stroking the back of her head just as she wrapped her arms around him digging her claws into his back, pricking at his skin just under his jacket but he ignored the slight pain as she burst into tears and heart wrecking sobs...her body shaking hard with her muzzle buried into his shoulder.
After what seamed to be forever her sobs slowly faded away, but still she just held onto him for dear life...scared she would lose him. Such a shame the poor child's family was taken from her so ruthlessly...but here he was, the one person to help her and protect her.
"Hey...come on lets see if we can find your family...besides...I'm here looking for someone also." he smiled trying to help brighten her mood, rewarded for his efforts when Sara looked up at him, her eyes shining brightly while her tail started to wag so hard it most likely would have knocked her over if he wasn't holding her.
"Okay..."
Standing up Michael moved to look out the window, it was light out, but the fog never cleared...if anything it got thicker. Moving to the door out of the room he reached for the doorknob but stopped when he felt Sara's paw slip into his hand holding it softly, he then looked down noticing that she was looking up at him with a loving smile...he gave a nod and opened the door and both of them stepped out into the dark hall of the apartment complex, looking around as he turned on the pocket flashlight due to the hallways being dark from the lack of any real means of light.
They both made there way to the fire escape and moving to the street below, disappearing into the thick fog, unaware of something watching there every move while they walked to the docks silently.
Upon reaching the docks the area was silent and still...besides the sound of the water lapping at the posts that supported the structure. Soon Sara looked to the side sniffing at the air some before her ears perked up.
"Something is out here...watching us."
Michael turned to look at her silently before he got the feeling she was right...goose-bumps formed all over his body, he looked to the side noticing a building that looked like some kind of museum. "Lets get over there..." he looked to Sara before leading her to the front doors and inside the building.
The inside of the museum wasn't much...just random paintings, and other trinkets in display cases and stands. Sara looked to the side at a long hall sniffing the air some more.
"I smell momma and papa.."
Soon she took off down the hall with Michael fallowing her close behind...then he saw it...before she even guessed. A large hole was in the floor carved into the rock below, he just managed to catch Sara in his arms sliding to the stop just before the edge of the hole holding her close to him panting hard.
"Don't run off like that Sara...I almost lost you." he sighed softly holding her close in his arms kissing her head before his mind was snapped back forcefully when the floor gave way under him and busting through... "Shit!" was all he could say...the hole was larger than he thought, and before he could even move they both fell into the deep dark hole that seamed to go on forever before they slammed into the ground below with a bone shattering impact. Michael had adjusted himself in the fall to land so Sara wouldn't hit the ground, taking the full force that jarred him hard.
They laid there silently, the sound of water dripping along the rocks was a silent echo in the dark cave before Michael groaned looking at Sara who was laying on his chest looking at him worried.
"You okay?" he asked softly with a groan, his body ached a bit, but the headache he had was killing him.
Sara gave a soft nod, getting off him and looking around shivering softly. "This place scares me...I wanna go home.!" she whimpered softly while hugging herself with her arms and tail...watching as he got up and dusted off his cloths and ran his fingers through his hair looking around.
"Well...no way up so we have to keep going...don't worry...if we make it out of here alive...I'll take you home and we can sit near the fire and have hot chocolate and cake."
That there got the young husky girls attention, with a smile on her muzzle she moved to take his hand once more looking around then up to him. "If...if we can't find them...will you be my father?"
Michael gave a soft nod looking at her. "Yes...I will."
They then made there way deeper into the tunnel unaware that more danger lurked ahead and the secret to both of there questions would soon be answered. The path was long and uneventful...after what seamed to be hours of walking they both came upon a heavy steel door. Looking to one another they both gave a nod, placing there hand (And Paw) upon the doorknob and at the same time, turned it...pushing the door open to find themselves in a open area, nothing like the rock tunnel they were just in...but something that mocked a destroyed buildings roof, crumbling concrete pillars, rebar mesh and steel grate floor that showed the lower floors that were just the same, till fog obscured any way to see farther down. Rain was falling softly upon them as the wind blew sending a chill through both the human and the husky making them give a slight shiver.
Soon in a crash of thunder a large metal casket slammed down into the floor sending a shockwave through the metal knocking them off there feet and right on there ass.
The casket opened to revile a very disturbing sight...at first Michael shook his head with his eyes closed before looking once more before trying to form words that wouldn't come from his mouth, but Sara gave a whimpering howl as she hid behind him shivering hard.
The figure that moved from the open casket was a mix of three huskies, fur patterns mixed and blotched, three heads on its shoulders, two feminine looking ones and one male...upon looking more closely Michael noticed that one of the females was his own girlfriend Sasha. Then that same voice poured from Sasha's muzzle that seamed to bind the air with a thick tone.
"Why Michael? Why did you do it...I thought you loved me?"
Michael now remembered just what happened three years ago, he now knew why it was so dark and painful...He killed his own love...right there in that hospital bed with a pillow over her face.
Slowly he got up lowering his head standing there as the rain kept falling upon them softly before it got harder.
"I...I couldn't see you suffer anymore...it hurt me to see you like that. I gave up when you did..."
Soon a black tentacle lashed out and slammed him in the chest sending him onto his back on the steel floor with a clang. Getting up slowly he shook his head of the pain before looking back at the creature.
"I'm sorry..." he sighed softly, nearly slipping into the darkness of his pain before a howl of pain jerked him back to see Sara being squeezed by the same tentacle that hit him. "LET HER GO!" he yelled while he took his revolver from his pocket and fired a round into its chest, rewarded when it dropped its target and changed to him sending its tentacle at him aiming to slam him into the floor but missed when he dodged to the side rolling into a crouch and fired off three more rounds into its side.
The creature growled in anger stalking its way toward him while he fired off his last two rounds, one round finding its mark in the forehead of the male but the last shot hit a metal lock holding a cable.
Tracing the path of the cable Michael found that it held up a load of steel beams over the center of the floor...now reloading quickly he dodged a few more attacks but one that he didn't see slammed into his side sending him sliding across the floor, the metal biting into the palm of his free hand and his knuckles of the other before he took aim at the cable, bracing his wrist carefully while waiting for the creature to get within the center of the floor then fired off two rounds, one missing and the other hitting home. The cable snapped sending the tons of steel onto the creature pinning it to the ground, one beam had slammed into the other females head crushing it on impact, leaving only Sasha's head alive and well.
He moved over to the creature and kneeled down placing his hand upon its head closing his eyes.
"I never meant for any of this to happen Sasha...If I could...I would turn back time and take it all back...I would have been by your side till the last breath." tears slowly started to trail down his cheeks but it was hard to see due to the rain.
"I...know that...I'm sorry it had to...end like it...did...but...at lest we can...go on in peace...now finish the job...please...put me at rest once and for all.."
Michael gave a soft nod standing up aiming the revolver slowly to her head and pulling the hammer back. "We'll be together again...some day...I love you Sasha.." the words he spoke brought tears to both there eyes once more before he pulled the trigger...the gunshot echoing over the low rumble of the thunder that flowed through the gray sky as the rain let up softly. Soon he felt something grab his hand, turning to look...he noticed Sara held his hand softly looking up at him.
"Lets go...please?" she looked up at him with bright blue eyes and a soft smile.
Michael gave a nod and walked with her to another door that was the only way out, upon going through they found themselves in a short tunnel with light at the end and made there way toward it slowly.
Upon exiting the tunnel they found there selves not far from his car...slowly walking over to it he looked over to the town still surrounded by the fog and mist before he smiled softly just as Sara's voice pulled at him.
"What are you going to do with that?" she asked while pointing slightly to the revolver still in his hand.
He looked at her then to the revolver in thought before he smiled. "I'm going to go on with my life...and I am going to let the past lay to rest." he spoke while holding of the revolver, adjusting it in his hand before stepping over to the rock wall and with one mighty toss of his arm...he flung the gun into the air, watching it spiral through the air, disappearing into the mist before a splash sounded in the air from impact to the water below.
Moving back to the car he smiled seeing Sara was already in the passenger side waiting for him with her seatbelt on, so he moved over getting into the car...looking to the town one last time with a soft smile.
"Rest my love...some day we will be together again..."
The car started up, backing out of the parking space and turning toward the long empty stretch of road before driving off slowly into the mist and back home, where they both belonged.
Be it as a memory or something else...fate has a weird way of steering people in the right way...all we can do is fallow the path and pray we know what to do...but...sometimes its not very easy to face the darkness of your past...sometimes it is...but all in all...the more closure ya get...the more at peace you will be...and just hope the darkness don't have a desire to feed on your pain as well.
~{{ Michaels Residence down town Juno Alaska }}~
Michael sat silently in his leather recliner holding Sara in his arms, both of them sound asleep and at ease...newly filed adoption papers laid on the table from earlier that day, beside empty cups of hot chocolate and plates with small cake crumbs on it...the day a new family was born, a wish come true... A Life Born From A Wish and A Broken Dream.
Sara slowly grinned in her sleep snuggling closer to his chest with a murr, her tail swaying softly in bliss as she muttered one word... "Daddy.".
