Streams of Life Chapter 9 part 1
#10 of Streams of Life
I hope to have the rest of this finished in the next day or so. I've had a good twenty or so pages of this done forever but couldn't seem to peice it together and get some parts how I liked them.
"Listen you" I said through clenched teeth as I grabbed the tailor roughly. " I left my WIFE in your care not more than two hours ago. If you think to gain something by this act of ignorance, my blade will swiftly find a home in your gut."
"Sir, unhand me. You are out of your mind. Leave now or i'll have the guards throw you in a cell." The man said calmly as the other patrons drew back in fright.
I grabbed my sword with my free hand and halfway removing it from its sheath jammed the pommel into the liar's gut. The man coughed and groaned as I let him stumble backwards falling on his ass.
"Do you take me for a fool? Where is Veira."
"You are a fool if you can wander out of the Wilds reeking of animals and piss and come to the finest clothier in town and imagine you had a wife who you could even afford to cloth here. No, sir, you are in fact mad." The man said standing up while making a show before the other patrons with their painted faces and pompous self-assured smiles.
"Master Tsarano, what is the commotion you are causing in here?" A very mirthless voice called out, causing our little standoff to pause for a moment.
The Breck entered the room, holding his halberd in one hand while making very noticable his onyx talons in his other hand. He stood tall nearly six feet wearing only a white skirt around his loins with a spiraling marking in black that I cannot place. His wings folded behind him as dark as his talons in color. In fact his skin was so dark that calling it black would hardly be a lie. And while his nearly human face offered some familiarity, his piercing emotionless eyes were that of a predator, golden and black. Everyone watched him making no movement feeling ill at ease except the tailor who was smiling smugly as if he expected this occurrence.
"Impeccable timing my dear guard. This man here is quite mad with sun fever and had the audacity to make false claims against me and to even go so far as to hit me in the stomach with his sword. He is clearly a danger to everyone in Terrace. I don't know how he was ever granted admittance in the first place. I can hardly believe...."
"You did you draw your sword on master Tsarano?" The Breck turned to me interrupting Tsarano and asked.
"I did not, I hit him with my pommel while sheathed. I will not escalate this further but.."
"I do not care for your explanation. Do any of you dispute that he did not draw his sword." The Breck cut me off and asked the others, they said nothing and looked away from his gaze.
"Then you have committed no crime.... yet... I should advise you to cool your temper unless you desire the blades of justice to claim you. Master Tsarano, claim a duel with him if you are going to or bring this matter before the council later. Nothing?" The bird man wasted little time waiting for an answer he knew already would be a no. "Fair enough then, and you outsider, leave here and do not return here or assault master Tsarano further or you shall pay. I know not where you hail form in the Wilds, be this town is ruled by law, obey them or perish." With that the guard made a beckoning motion for me to leave.
At this point causing more of a commotion would only hinder me and drawing blood could doom my search for Veira. I can't see how I have much choice but to oblige. Tsarano made a few jibes at me as I left followed closely behind by the Breck male. Turning to speak to him about what just to place, he meet my eyes with his soulless ones and made no motion or indication that bird man cared in the slightest about what transpired. If I am to do something he will be no help to me.
The market, I guess I can try looking for her there for now. The chances of Veira actually leaving and following after me when I told her to stay are low. More so considering how Tsarano acted. But what could he have done with her or where could she have gone?
I jogged as best I could with the weight of my pack suddenly becoming heavy under the hot summer sun. A pass up and down the main market showed nothing, not a Gre'nahk of any type to be seen and in actuality there were not even any Ah'komeli or Rugesh shopping only an odd merchant of different race here and there. The market was almost solely humans now.
"Tal'keelis!" A voiced called out to me from behind.
Byron, the apothecary was waving me over to him looking a bit concerned.
"Tal'keelis" he said as I came closer. "What's the matter? You've twice been up and down the market. If you need something else perhaps I can point you to where you might go." He spoke kindly, but was poor at reading moods. Yet I held back my tongue, I can't go and offend the one man in this town who has my name, even if I want to lash out in rage at someone. He could perhaps give me a bit of help, seeing how I do think that he is a good man unlike that sly tailor.
"Tal'keelis?" He spoke again as I gathered my thoughts and calmed myself a bit.
"Sorry Byron, but my wife is missing, and a guard came before I could get any answers out of that snake Tsarano." I practically spit that vile creatures name out. Calling him a snake is too good, even snakes have uses. " I do not like this I need to find her quickly." I said to him hurriedly as I looked up and down the street trying to catch a glimpse of Veira.
"Spirits, Tal'keelis I am truly sorry" he spoke worriedly and then looking around beckoned me closer. "Your wife, is she not human?" he asked with a grim expression
"No, she is Gre'nahk, I took her unto me not long ago, I don't think she would do well being separated from me for long." A feeling of hopelessness came over me as Byron pretty much had already told me what I did not wish to hear, that someone had taken her.
"Master Tsarano, his brother-in-law sits at the head of the town council and he himself is likely to gain a seat soon. You need to be careful Tal'keelis his brother has men under his own employ veterans of southern wars and most in town will overlook their actions out of fear. This goes doubly so for an outsider."
"What does this have to do with Veira, my wife Byron? I am really not in the mood to talk town politics." I said wearily. I tried not to sound too severe or angry as he was obviously trying to help me and further he believed doing so would itself endanger him.
"The slave market of course Tal'keelis. Master Nokato owns the slave market in town, those who cannot pay debts, criminals and those acquired "legally" from other lands are sold and bought here and transported beyond the Wilds."
"But Veira would be none of those."
"Tal'keelis, it matters not. Non-human outsiders are sold here and sent into the fire worshipers' lands. If you left her at Tsaranos' then I would bet the ashes of my father she was taken to be sold."
"How could any Wilder allow such detestable things go on in this town? This is still...."
"Barely my friend the past five years has changed this place much, and not for the better I say. But hurry now, the slave market is past here and up two terraces then further west. Walls taller than a Rugesh frames it, guard on both sides under a red canopy. If you reach it before Tsarano or a messenger telling of your outburst does you could still buy her back, or at the least, see who has purchased her and then do what you must." He said in hushed whispers, motioning for me to go down the street beyond the market.
"Why? Why should I purchase my own wife back, they have stolen her. No, they have abducted her." It is madness to think that the rights of freedom of one could so quickly and easily be erased and no one would lift a finger to stop it.
"Tal'keelis, it is injustice, I know it. But you will not change it. The Fire King has his hands here and that place is his. If she's not there then I would be glad, but I think it likely. 20-25 gold, that's what you need more if she is truly fetching. If you cause a scene Nokato's guards will kill you without hesitation and even if you manage them the town guards posted there will sound an alarm and also come for you. Just buy her again. I will even loan you some gold if it helps, since by your countenance I can tell you are a man of his oath. Just by the Spirits go quickly, there will be no one who will speak to you if you inquire about her, it is taboo to speak ill of that place. Just play a buyer looking for a toy and act as you belong and then quickly leave, Tsarano is vengeful and cunning and Nokato is worse still." He was almost pleading me to leave him now, so I did.
I do not know what kind of place this has become nor what else will happen here but if they have done something to Veira, I will make them pay for touching my property... damn it no, my wife.
I hustled as best I could without wearing myself down further, slowing down to a casual walk as soon as I caught sight of the wall that encompassed the market. I approached from the right, the guard was surprisingly an Ah'komeli, a beige striped one who took note of me as I got closer.
"Auctions are almost through for the day." he said as if to deter me. I just shrugged and continued in without looking at him again, placing my hand inside my shirt to check my purse. He made no move to stop me looking a bit annoyed but otherwise not seeming to care.
The insides was set all in the same yellow bricks that ran throughout the town at the far end was a raised platform perhaps three feet high and shaded by a hide awning under which the slaves were displayed, currently it was a young male Rugesh. At the back of the platform were open doorways one at the left end and one at the right. At the right side off of the platform was a covering with a seated man and a guard next to him a pair of men stood in front of him. It must be there that payment is exchanged. Which means that slaves are kept behind the left door paraded across the platform then picked up at the right.
Six rows of stone benches were placed in front of the platform, seated upon which were many humans nearly all blaring the colors of red, orange and yellow. There seemed to be no other exit other than the two entrances in the back of where I was slowly making my way from to the benches. Perhaps thirty men and a few women sitting there buying and talking amongst themselves.
The man on the stand was pale skinned and portly, behind him a large guard with a spear and dagger at this side. The fat man wore a black cioppa coming down to his knees. The robe was slashed vertically on the body and along the arms as well, revealing golden silk inners, sharply contrasting to the deep black. His cioppa was unusual as the collar popped up behind his neck, radiating from the center were strands of gold silk making it appear as he was crowned by a rising sun. His undershirt was blaze red with gold buttons running the length to his trousers, a ruby jeweled dagger at his side. He has to be Nokato, and another guard must be behind the platform with the slaves. Three plus the two guards and then likely a few more soon after, those are not good odds for even the best of fighters in good health of which I am neither.
"Sold! For Twenty and Seven Gold to the respected Master Gimmilion, a bargain greater than summer rains of a surety." The portly man cried out as the young Rugesh was moved by the guard to the right door. The red lines on his back evident even from a distance as clearly was the fact that the nude youth had been emasculated. Sold to be a laborer until he was worked to death most likely. Mocked, beaten and punished until his will was broken without a doubt. The mark of the Fire worshipers' "civilization".
"Two left and the finest of the lot for the day my dearest friends. Two, great prizes waiting for a home. Two exotic of the most exotic that can be found. Prepare to arrange a line of credit for you shall want both." The man called out as a guard brought out a cage, set it down at the front of the stage and then gave it a good kick. The small blue creature inside jumped, hit its head on the ceiling of the cage and then again on the front as it panicked at the sudden jolt. This gave a round of laughter to those sitting. I smiled wickedly at the sight to keep up appearances but hated this all as I moved closer to the platform.
Inside was a Synwyn, a child or adolescent, I couldn't be sure. The same type of creature whose milk I had just purchased in the market. Whose kind are found only deep in the Wilds, and prefer to avoid contact with the other races. Its bright green eyes looked warily at the crowd before laying back down in its cage. It wrapping its blue furred tail tightly around its body with the white flared tuft of fur at its end upon its face to perhaps block out the view.
"Yes a Synwyn, a rare beast of the Wilds, full of magic and beauty. This Feisty little female comes all the way from the Skypeaks unto you. What a symbol of tamed majesty she could make or what endless amount of elixirs could be made from her. I judge not any of you for your uses of it. Only by the size of your wallets, of course."
A few made rude comments at Nokato and they all laughed, Nokato included. This group must often be the same to tread so lightly with a man like that. "And the last now as well, barely made it into town upon a caravan from southern sands, so I apologize endlessly my friends for not having her available for inspection..." Spirits no, I don't want to see this. Yet It is easier to be if it is. At least then I won't have to search. But how to get her. "A Gre'nahk of the shifting sands clan. The prize of the south deserts. The jewels over which wars have been waged." The Guard brought out Veira, her head low, hands bound behind her back still wearing her robe thankfully. her tail drooped low, dragging on the ground, here whole body seemed to match her tail as she seemed to drag herself across the platform. The guard roughly forced her to kneel and went behind the left door again, leaving her for the other. "Young beautiful, trained to please every man or woman, and fertile. In fact your ancestors must have bestowed luck upon you today, for she's in heat now, purchase her now and breed her tonight. In seven months you shall have more. A literal fountain of wealth, as close to gold as her luxurious fur is. How priceless a thing is that! Do not be shy come closer and see for yourself the quality of these two fine females!" Nokato said making grand gestures a warm and inviting smile upon his greasy face.
Several of the men rose up and walked forward, lustful smiles upon their faces. It was this kind of slave that they had obviously come here to buy. "Come on Nokato, how can we judge her if you have her wrapped up like a burrowing sand badger. Let's see what we are to purchase." An older greying man with yellowed teeth and wispy oily hair said licking his lips.
"Of course, of course, but you know how Gre'nahk like this are so loyal and docile they would never display their lovely features in public by choice. *sigh* Yet I somehow must abide by the will of you good men." Nokato gave a nod and the guard loosed the bands on Veira's hands so her robe could be removed. Her eyes were shut tight, and she showed no emotion and made no action to undress, she just placed her now freed hands in her lap and assumed a serving pose as she had been taught. Her tail lifting around and setting in a double 's' pattern behind her as if she was hoping that this act could spare her from the issued order.
They were momentarily distracted as she moved her tail, its length obviously abnormal even for females of her clan. As I worked my way forward, they seemed to lose interest in her tail and returned again to their previous command. Shouting with louder voices.
"Off with those robes now you" The greyed haired man yelled. He reached his slimy hand out towards the v-neck of her robe intending to rip it open as Veira kept her eyes closed. The others cheered him on and Nokato smiled as he counted coins in his head.
"VEIRA!" her head snapped to attention, eyes open wide in disbelief. The man stopped and all eyes were now very unfortunately on me. The guard renewed the grip on his spear and Nokato's smile disappeared and was promptly replaced with a snarl. My body moved without thought as I reached my hand to her she took it instantly and I pulled her down into the crowd.
"Hands off the merchandise you feeble minded outsider." Nokato said tersely.
"Don't try to claim what isn't yours swine." I spat at him.
"Delusional imbecile. Every slave I own is properly documented as legally bought, criminally convicted or indebtedly contracted. This is a town of law, and theft of a slave is punishable by death or forced servitude at my council's discretion."
"Yet you are quick to spout a defense of them. Damn you ancestors for spawning such lying, oath breaking, tueron fucker." I drew Veira close to me with my left as I unsheathed my sword. She was in such shock that she said nothing, just allowed herself to be moved.
"Guards" The rotund bastard said calmly I didn't have a chance to take a step towards him before his men were in front of him, the city guards coming in from behind by the only exits.
The distance between myself and the all those who came to inspect Veira was now very great, the cowards had backed off, wished nothing to do with drawn steel. Yet unfortunately those closest to us were all holding weapons, two of Nokato's men had spears, a third wielded a wicked looking double headed axe. Behind me the two guards and their halberds were already pointed at me.
"Get the Chief." the Ah'komeli guard said to the other." And the second city guard quickly left. Leaving it as four to one.
"My dear man" Nokato started. "I am not unreasonable nor unmerciful as the duties of leadership require such a prudent man. I shall overlook this commotion and your drawn sword if you return to me what is mine. And provided you are able, would even consider allowing you to purchase IT from me if you desire, of course you must outbid everyone else." He spoke elegantly as he walked off the platform and confidently over to us, the guards holding their places.
"80 gold Nokato" The grey haired man said. "I'll fuck her raw tonight then give her to my Ah'komeli to knock up." The man said as he laughed through his stained teeth.
"See friend just a bit more than 80 gold and we can all be happy here. Surely a man like yourself, obviously a proud hunter would have such means." His devilish smile crept across his face as the crowd, now watching from behind the safety of the guards laughed.
Veira suddenly left go of my hand. Time seemed to creep by at a crawl as she took one step and then another and then another away from me and towards that wretched liar. I couldn't find a voice, my mouth just hung open as she walked away without looking back. Why?
"Now that's a fine girl. You know who owns you don't you." Veira took his outstretched hand and then stood behind and beside him head, down eyes on the ground again. "You see friend you can't take a slave away from being a slave. And Gre'nahk females are always slaves. Perhaps mister Jacks here could help you find your way out of town and into a more natural habitat for yourself." he said smiling towards the Ah'komeli guard who just sighed and nodded. "That's a good boy. Now I have some bitches to sell still." Nokato told the guard in a condescending voice with a shit eating grin.
He closed his eyes for a moment and the guards lightened up their stances for only a second before Nokato cried out. Quick as lightning Veira had grabbed his ruby jeweled dagger at his side and plunged it into his back. Blood seeping from both sides of the large wound on his right, she drew closer to him, the guards standing still in shock. Myself sword still at the ready, comprehension of what just happened only slowly becoming clear.
She pulled it out, and nuzzled the man's neck giving a quick tug on his ear with her teeth, before seductively saying. "I thank your men for bring me closer to you, my lovely mark." Then with her head just behind his, she slowly brought the dagger across his neck. His eyes tracing its slow movement across him with abject terror, completely frozen in place until the base of the blade was at the left of his neck, his mouth wordlessly muttering. There, with a little pressure she brought the sharp blade into his skin cutting along his neck. As the blood spilled on the blade, she stuck her tongue out across the blade licking it clean as she slowly sliced him open. She kicked his body down to the ground, a single gurgle was the only sound before the man was dead, his finery soaked in his own fetid blood. The other buyers ran now for the exits screaming. Leaving three shocked and very nervous mercenaries and one town guard.
