Now Serving:

That Nagging Feeling

"Dad's decided he wants to meet my biological dad," Venti said.

Art blinked a few times, then said "That's today? Oh, man, I'm sorry, I forgot."

Now it was Venti's turn to blink. "You forgot? You usually have a better memory than I do."

"That isn't too hard to accomplish," Ted said in a stage whisper.

Venti glowered at Ted, who returned the look with a beatific smile.

"Boys," said their father. "Remember what I said about behaving?"

"I'll be good," Venti said.

"I'll be better," Ted said.

Art shook his head with a chuckle. "It was a weird day at work, Venti. I'll tell you about it later." He then shot Ted a glance, who mimed zipping up his lips. "Anyway, do I have time for a shower?"

Venti squinted at the exchange, but decided to not press for more details. His curiosity would have to wait, no matter how much it was nagging him to find out what the 'interesting day' entailed. "Anyway, yeah. You have enough time, I'm sure. I got to call him and arrange it." He then glowered at his little brother once more. "And before you ask, Ted, you can't come with us."

"That's fine," Ted said. "I'll just hang out with Otis."

"If that's alright with you, sir," Otis hastily added.

"Call me, Earl, Otis, and then it'll be alright."

"Yes sir...Earl."

"Good boy," said Earl, then looked over at Venti. "Now, how about you give Sam a call and we'll take it from there."

"Yes sir," Venti said, then paused before dialing. "I suppose you don't want me to let him know you're coming along?"

Earl gave Venti a patient look reserved for people who accidentally said something foolish. "Of course not, son. If he thought I'd be showing up, he'd make some excuse to cancel."

Venti nodded, though now his curiosity was replaced the feeling of he was missing something crucial. A quick glance at the computer showed the broadcaster program was shut off, but the feeling continued to nag at him. It's just my frazzled nerves, he thought. I didn't expect to have my adopted dad with me when I outed myself to my bio dad.

It was like having a Chinese curse, except time was being replaced by lunch.
