The Corporate: Part 3 of 8

Harold had been sitting quietly in his seat. And while he was eagerly taking in his food, the feast

in front of him did little to spark the faintest of conversation. And perhaps it was that which stirred the

uneasy tension in the room as he and his rather large family ate. His own mother, sitting directly across

from him and his cousins, was unusually quiet as she picked at her plate.

It was Harold's father who finally broke the silence, asking whether or not Harold wished to be with

the family for Christmas Eve. Harold hesitated at the question and then lowered his fork. He muttered the

question silently to himself, and then repeated it again at a louder tone.

Harold then flew into a rage. Tossing his plate off of the table he scorned the man for asking such a

ridiculous query. Of course he did not wish to be there! He had much better things to do on Christmas

than lay around and do what? sing frivolous carols? There were things to be done, deadlines to be met!

Why was there any question to his schedule? Why was it that they couldn't understand that Harold was

a busy and important man? Why were these people always so needy?

Harold stopped himself and then raised his hand as if to reference every object in the room. Although

this house was occupied by his parents, it was actually Harold who held the deed to the property. Harold

made that very clear now that all of this was his willingness to put up with them. And he also made it very

clear that he did not want to be bothered ever again. With this, Harold stood up and excused himself from

the table. Reaching the front door, he spun around on a heel and pointed towards his younger sister, Beth,

who also happened to be his personal secretary and, just before, had requested form him a day's leave on

Christmas Eve. He said to her now that if she was not in her office on that day, he would fire her. And with

that, Harold walked out leaving the door open behind him.
