Star Fox Chronicles: Chapter 14: Jovey Jadestar
#16 of Star Fox Chronicles
All Nordic could do was reach out as Ryan fell out of view. Consumed in a vast anger and rage he turned around and drew his katanas. The aura glowed more efficiently than before. He then spoke, his voice however had changed. He now seemed to speak in three voices, one deeper, and one lighter to compliment the spirits of his blade.
"You dare hurt Ryan," Nordic said his voices ringing loud into the air, "you shall perish for that." Cougar twitched his ears in slight surprise and laughed out loud.
"Aahh," he replied, "so the great dragon spirits of Firamatsume and Miramatsume lie in your weapons. Such power has made me aware of that. But realize it was your own damn attacks that condemned Ryan to that fate." The blades' auras ignited furiously and Nordic charged his energy into a new level. He rose his blades to prepare for a showdown to the death.
Natoya and Roxanne continued to charge very aggressively at the Star Wolf team. However neither side seemed to budge in the struggle. Wolf charged forward with his claws extended out ready for another strike. Leon had knelt down in a side injury who was defended by Panther, his sword held out at a steady position. Natoya glowed a quick pink aura before warping right to Wolf's back. Wolf knew this and spun a kick, which Natoya dodged heading square for Panther and Leon. Panther matched his sword with her knife and struggled with her as she quickly warped around trying to find a way to get to Leon. Leon jumped up and landed a kick right on exact timing connecting Natoya right in the stomach, which was quickly followed with another kick from Panther. As she doubled over Roxanne thrusted her whip at Wolf. He stood his ground and caught it with both hands. Pulling hard trying to wrench it free from Roxanne. Her smile faded and she growled while trying to win the tug of war between the larger wolf. The pitbull was unsuccessful but still held on with an iron grip. With a hard tug Wolf yanked Roxanne off her feet sending her right towards him, who unleashed a roundhouse kick right to her shoulder. The two Claxan members supported each other back to balance and quickly glanced out the nearby window.
"I guess it's mission complete," Roxanne said giving a childish giggle.
"We'll see you big bad boys later now," Natoya said. The two girls stood back to back and Natoya teleported them away. The Star Wolf team looked on dumbfounded and Wolf rushed to the window. He looked up and what he saw made time slow down to a near stop for his comprehension.
"RYAN," Wolf shouted. The other two heard their leader shout and quickly rushed as Ryan fell below their view. It seemed that a chain reaction occurred for everyone who saw Ryan fall. Lucian and 8 a couple floors up noticed him just past a window, followed by most of the group of fighters.
Fox and Falco fought in complete sync against Draxor and Mayson, easily matching the powerful blows of both, but still being shaken up by the attack. Mayson's powerful gloves providing a great deal of force complimented by Draxor's buster gunblade. Krystal separated from the fight to assist the medical team on the floor helping the wounded. Tri and Trevor in particular suffering several bruises and a couple minor cuts. Mayson sent his fist into the ground sending another shockwave that further punished the ground floor. Draxor followed this up with a flurry of blaster shots heading right towards Fox and Falco. They both held ray shields up just in time, but the force sent them flying right out the front door. They both landed hard on their backs and helped each other back onto their feet. As the two Claxan members stepped outside they looked up and gave smirks.
"Objective one complete," Draxor said. Mayson looked up and started laughing out loud. Fox and Falco looked up with them and nearly fainted with the sight of their falling comrade Ryan plummeting towards them fast.
"Ryan no," Fox and Falco shouted simultaneously. They rushed forward trying to position themselves to get to him, but to no avail as Draxor and Mayson pushed them both away. All they could do was look up at Ryan, who was dangerously close to the ground. Fox then noticed a quick flash of green from the corner of his eye. He turned to notice a figure speeding right past him. He tried to follow it, but by the time he saw it, he was both relieved and confused at the same time, whoever it was that had shown up had saved Ryan just in the nick of time. He looked up at the figure holding Ryan in his arms. A false vampire bat, standing at roughly 6 foot 3 with dark gray fur. His head was complimented with dark blue hair and neon green eyes that could pierce any pitch black area. He slowly flapped his wings as he slowly descended, his hold of Ryan not fading as he flew through the front door into the building. Krystal, Tri, and Trevor looked on with mixed horrors on their faces. The bat slowly set Ryan down on the ground and stood upright encloaking himself in his own wings. The medical team quickly converged on Ryan and did their best to find a way to move him without seriously damaging him.
"It seems you guys just can't stop causing trouble," the bat said to Draxor who could only laugh.
"You're quite the wise guy aren't ya?" Mayson said mockingly. The bat ignored him and turned to the medical team.
"We'll handle it here," he said gesturing the team up the stairs, "get him to safety." Tri and Trevor managed to get up, but couldn't quite comprehend the situation. They looked on at Ryan in complete horror. They couldn't stand to see Ryan hurt, especially this bad as they looked on at the large spike. Krystal ran with the medical team and motioned Tri and Trevor to do the same. As they left out of harms way the bat turned towards Fox and Falco.
"Thanks for your help," Falco said, "but who are you?"
"My name is Jovey Jadestar," he said to him, "that's all you need to know right now." He pulled out his arms and withdrew a large staff. The top complimented with a curved blade and held a significance length to it. He held it up and a green aura formed around it. A second later Fox and Falco found themselves surrounded by the same aura. They felt the bruises and pain from the fight fade away and could feel their strength rise. When the aura disappeared Jovey held the staff firmly with both hands pointing it right at the two Claxan members.
"This looks like it'll get interesting," Draxor said holding up his buster gunblade. Before anything else happened he held his hand up to his ear for a second. When he put it down he sighed. "Unfortunately we're being called back. I'm looking forward to our rematch Star Fox." He grabbed Mayson and pressed a button on his shoulder. The two quickly vanished into thin air after that, leaving the three others in the destroyed foyer. Fox looked around for a bit and saw that there were no more enemies looking around. He approached Jovey who stood with his eyes closed.
"Well I don't know who you are," Fox began, "but thanks-"
"Shhh," Jovey cut off Fox and listened quietly, "can't you hear it?"
"Hear what?" Falco asked from behind Fox.
"There is a battle on the rooftop," Jovey replied, "I think I'll take my leave of you gentlemen. I would suggest getting rid of the last of those infernal robots, before they get out." He expanded his wings and took off. Heading full tilt up towards the building rooftop.
Spell after spell was cast on that rooftop. Nordic threw a flurry of attacks right at Cougar, who seemed easily capable of reflecting them.
"I thought you'd give it up after the last 30 times you've used that attack." He quickly slashed at Nordic with his triple bladed katana. They exchanged blow after blow with their swords, sending sparks into the night sky. Cougar saw an opening and struck, slashing right into Nordic's side and causing him to collapse. He aimed his blade right at Nordic and smirked. He pulled up ready for the strike but turned around suddenly with a look of seriousness on his face. He looked up to see a bat fly up and charge right at him, cutting a line between Cougar and Nordic. Jovey quickly stopped and casted a green aura onto Nordic, whose wounds went away shortly afterwards.
"It seems I've overstayed my welcome," Cougar said to the two of them as Jovey helped Nordic up. "Now I should leave a little momento for you now huh?" With that note he hovered up off the ground. Floating up about ten feet charging a dark blue aura around his body. An essence of darkness emanated from him and he clasped his hands together. An intense red light formed in front of him into a large ball. And the size rapidly increased and Nordic felt Jovey tug at him.
"We'd best be going," Jovey said using all of his strength he grabbed Nordic and carried him away from the building. Nordic looked back as he saw a terrible explosion. The entire top of the building encased in a ferocious explosion. The large ball of fire engulfed the entire top floor, decimating everything inside. Nordic and Jovey looked on for several minutes until the flames died down, revealing nothing but smoldering remains of the president's office. The floor was completely vaporized, leaving everything not caught in the center of the explosion badly charred. Jovey lowered the two down the building to the ground and as they did they got the full extension of the damage. Most of the floors remained unharmed with a few internal damages. But most had several broken windows and a lot suffered numeruos cracks. This was going to sum up to a lot in damages. The building as a whole was still standing and very sturdy. It would take an asteroid to knock over that building. Cougar was nowhere to be found after the explosion, so they figured that he warped out of there. They got to the ground and headed inside where Bill was with Fox and Falco cleaning up the ground floor.
Cougar gave a sigh as he arrived back at the Claxan hideout.
"Anything you want to explain Cougar?" Arxgon asked, "why would you leave wihout finishing either job."
"This mission was just to pose a warning," Cougar answered, "to show Corneria that we mean business."
"What a waste of time is what I say," Mayson said, "what about the president and that human whore?"
"Those two are just a bonus," Cougar said, "we have them right where we want them now. Ryan teeters on the edge with a large wound, and the president is all vulnerable on a ship in space. Now we can move forward with the festivities. Natoya's experimentation is complete?"
"Yes," Natoya replied, "I almost doubted number 9 for a second there, but he knew what he was doing." She turned around and snapped her fingers. They all turned to face a figure slowly approaching. Roxanne whistled at the sight.
"Very impressive," Draxor said, "this is getting interesting."
"Excellent job," Cougar said and chuckled loudly, "we shall make this one our number 24." He chuckled out loudly as he continued to stare at the experiment, now joined in by the rest of the group.
"Now we'd best carry on the next phase then," Arxgon said equipping his large axe onto his back.
First there was a sharp pain, and when it didn't die down there was yelling. My eyes shifted open widely as I yelled out a sharp cry of pain. My breath grew heavy and I couldn't pay attention to anything. My mind was focused on that extreme pain on my shoulder. I couldn't remember what it was that is causing this pain. Why wasn't it stopping. Slowly I fought through the constant pain trying to get everything back into focus. I slowly remembered everything. The Claxan invaded, they attacked everyone. I was with Nordic on the rooftop and... I was impaled with the ice lance that cougar reflected.
"It could easily have been much worse," I said to myself.
"Ah you're awake," I heard an unfamiliar voice speak, "that's way ahead of when I thought you'd wake up."
"Whose there," I asked. My eyes were tightly shut from the intense pain, but I slowly opened my eyes to see that someone was standing in front of me looking over a piece of paper. It took me a while to see that he was a large dragon. He had red scales that reflected the light of the room. He was huge, standing at around 6 foot 6. His muscles quite bulky and noticeable through his white lab coat. He was wearing a grey jumpsuit under it, which I came to recognize as the medical uniform for on the field and in the hospitals. For a dragon he had long dark hair and complimented his blood red scales with Ice blue eyes. His large black wings were flapping slightly while he looked on at me. Clutched in his hands was a clipboard of somekind.
"Easy there," he said, "we just took out that large Ice spike about four hours ago."
"What?" I looked at my pain filled shoulder and winced. It was covered in a very bloody bandage. I could only grasp it just a little as I let out a grunt of pain.
"Here," he said handing me a vial, "drink this. This'll help the wound seal itself and heal faster. It should also help kill the pain." I looked at it for a second but nodded and chugged the medicine down. The taste was repulsive, like someone had put nails in a tasteless drink. I coughed and gagged trying my best not to puke it up.
"I know it's not the best tasting in the world," he stated, "but it works quite well."
"Thanks," I said catching my breath, "so who are you?"
"Ah yes I should introduce myself," he replied, "my name is Zio Sephis. It's a great honor to meet you in person." I smiled and shook his hand using my good arm.
"Yeah, and thanks for saving my life," I said.
"Oh, don't thank me," Zio said, "thank Jovey for that."
"Jovey?" I asked him. He headed for the door and opened it up.
"You guys can come in now," He said. He headed back over to my bed who was followed this time by Fox, Krystal, Falco, Nordic, and who I could swear was a bat. I figured that this guy was this Jovey Zio was talking about. Everyone looked at me and sighed breaths of relief, Nordic's was the largest.
"Thank goodness you're alright," Krystal said, "we were getting worried."
"I'll be damned if Cougar ever gets close to you again," Nordic shouted angrily, "I'm sorry Ryan, I wasn't able to protect you."
"It's okay Nordic," I said trying to end his tirade of sorrow.
"You're soul is quite strong Ryan," Jovey said to me, "that's a good sign. I'm not really worried about you at all."
"Thanks," I said, "and you are?"
"Jovey Jadestar," Falco said interrupting Jovey, "he's a cool guy."
"Falco it's not polite to interrupt," Fox said holding a finger up, "go ahead Jovey."
"No that's okay," Jovey said, "I don't mind. Here let me try to help you a little." He closed his eyes and concentrated, I felt the pain in my shoulder lift some and looked to see it encased in a green aura. When it disappeared he looked at me and smiled. "That should do it."
"What did you do?" Nordic asked.
"I healed him by channeling some energy from souls," Jovey explained, "I'm a keeper of lost souls. My herd souls with my staff which helps lead them to their final resting place. While I channel them I can harness it's power and use it without doing any harm to the soul. Allowing me to either heal wounds or even charge up people's attributes to assist them in battle." After he finished explaining it I nodded and turned to Fox.
"Where's Peppy and Slippy?" Zio seemed to focus more after this statement.
"They are inspecting the damage and preparing us for our latest mission," Fox said, "The president is out there and we need to find him. His ships signal has been shut off so the Claxan won't find them. So we need to find them before they do."
"Then let's go then," I said and I shuffled through the sheets trying to get out.
"Oh no you don't," Krystal said and forced me back down onto my bed.
"You're not in the condition to go anywhere," Zio said, "you're still wounded. You'll be killed in a matter of seconds."
"So what am I supposed to do then?" I asked annoyed.
"Stay here and get better," Fox said, "we'll get the president and be back before you know it." I felt like protesting even further but decided against it.
"Very well," I said, "you better find them fast or else." Fox, Falco, and Krystal nodded and left. Jovey waved at me and headed out the door. I wasn't sure what he was up to but I figured I'd see him around again. Now Nordic and Zio were the only ones left in the room with me.
"Ryan," Nordic began and I looked at him, "I want to make it up to you by protecting you while you recover. Is that alright with you?" I thought for a moment and figured that he'll keep beating himself up for it if I didn't so I nodded.
"I'd like that," I said and looked at Zio, "think they'll be alright?"
"Of course they will," Zio said, "I have first hand seen them in action. Slippy is a very good friend of mine."
"Cool," I said and gave a yawn. I guess I was more tired than I thought I was.
"You should get some sleep Ryan," Zio said, "the more you do the better you'll fare." I looked at him and nodded. "We should leave him alone mr. Icewolf while he rests." Nordic nodded at him and prepared to leave with him. He turned back to face me at the door.
"I'll be right out here guarding the door if you need me," he said as he shut the door. I looked on for a few seconds, he was really bummed out about this situation. Probably as much as I was, all I could hope for was that the rest of the Star Fox team will turn out okay. I pulled my covers and shifted to a comfortable position being careful with my right shoulder. I swiftly drifted to sleep, and I couldn't help but feel worried and useless from the situation.
Nordic slowly shut the door and looked around. He was determined not to leave that spot until Ryan needed him. He couldn't think how else he could make it up to Ryan.
"Hey Nordic," Nordic turned to his left to see Vincent and Nevlamas approaching. He waved at them as they approached.
"Ryan's in there right?" Nevlamas asked, a hint of sadness was detected in his voice.
"Yeah but he's asleep," Nordic said, "he took it the toughest this battle."
"Well he's the only one who got seriously wounded like that," he said, "thank goodness that bat dude saved him. I saw him fall while I carried Nev to the paramedics and had a heart attack."
"Everyone saw him fall," said Kuro as he and Red approached to join in the conversation.
"DJ wanted to jump out of the window just to catch him," Red said.
"All of that because of me," Nordic stated, "I swear that Cougar will fall to my blade."
"We all want a piece of the Claxan," 8 said from across the hall, "you don't need to beat yourself up for this Nordic."
"He's right," Vincent said, "same goes for you Nev. You guys didn't have control of the situation, it happens." Nevlamas and Nordic looked at him and silently nodded.
"We should all offer him support," Red said, "help him while he recovers." Everyone agreed and discussed what they could do and dispersed. Leaving Nordic alone to continue guarding Ryan's door.
Fox and the others took off in the Great Fox with worried looks on their faces. They didn't want to leave Ryan for this mission, but they wanted to keep him out of harms way while he recovered.
"He'll be fine," Slippy said, "he's in Zio's care."
"Besides," Peppy said, "we need to concentrate on this mission. Let's finish this quickly so we can get back."
"Yeah," Fox said, "And I got to give it to you two and Bill for fending off the air attacks very precariously."
"We had lot's of help from some of the people from Ryan's test. Particularly Balze was an excellent help. And Lucian with his customized ship until he was called to the ground forces."
"Now leaving Corneria's orbit," ROB64 stated. Everyone sat in their different chairs looking around. They were determined to scan the Lylat system to the very last speck until they found them.
