Differentials: Part 3 - A New Home
#3 of Differentials
So hello again! I'm happy for all the support you've given me and I'm still planning on going ahead with the extended version.
On the plus side, I've worked out another way to juice every single drop of story from my ideas! Hopefully this won't end up as rubbish, but I've decided to include the viewpoint of the human 'owners' as well as the fox. Hopefully this will give a bit more insight into what is going on in the story and what my brain is thinking about the characters as well.
Explanations over, it's time to begin :3 -
The fox walked up to the door, thoughts of having a nice, warm bed running forefront through his thoughts. He tried to work the handle, but failed miserably because of the vixen he was carrying. He shifted her off one of his arms and onto his shoulder, causing the female to mutter and shift, making the fox tense for a second before deciding it was safe to continue. He reached out to the doorknob and turned it, pushing open the door to reveal what was inside.
What was inside made him feel like he was going to melt into a pure ball of happiness. The room was relatively large, and definitely much larger than the room he had slept in for all of his childhood, and much, much bigger than the prison cell he had stayed in for the past months. In the center of the room was a very big bed, probably kingsized, which looked so comfortable the fox just wanted to dive onto it and fall asleep right now. There was also a few cabinets and drawers, but attatched to the wall above the desk was something he thought he'd never have in his own room. A mirror!
His parents' master used to have one in his room, but never did the slaves have one. The fox stood there admiring his reflection for a rather long time before moving on to one of the rooms attached to the bedroom. It was his own bathroom! It had a sink, a toilet and a shower, with what looked to be an expensive stone floor which felt cool to the touch.
Tears welled up in the fox's eyes as he praised luck for giving him such great owners. And even if the man turned out to be horrible, although the fox was sure he wouldn't, he would have a much better time here than any other place he could have been sent to.
-
"Why did you send him to the guest room?", Dan questioned angrily, the same sneer as before plastered upon his face.
"Come on Dan, do you really expect them to be happy in that tiny shed you made for them? It's not even waterproof, they would get soaked if it rained tonight."
Elizabeth was surprised at the cynical nature of her partner. He was usually joyful and bubbly, but now all it seems he could think of was treating the new 'slaves' as harshly as possible.
"But what if we have guests tomorrow? What if they come and find orange hairs all over their bed? They would be furious, and say we should treat them even more harshly!"
Daniel's mind was confused. He didn't want to treat the Reklan harshly, but he definitely didn't want anyone at work finding out he'd bought a slave just to pamper it. He remembered the time a couple of weeks ago when his workmates bullied him into getting one.
-
"Come on, Dan! Everyone else has got one!", shouted one of the secretaries.
Dan looked uncertainly around the room, greeted by nods wherever he turned. They were probably meant to be friendly, coercing nods but instead they seemed like they were nodding yes to his own execution.
Dan had always loved animals. Anything cute or fluffy was under his sworn protection to keep them from harm or maltreatment. He spent his free time volunteering for the animal shelter in town and had always had an affinity for the cute bunnies which always hopped over to him, or the cats who would scratch anyone else, but let him stroke them without a care.
He had never wanted to own a Reklan. It seemed inhumane to him and since they also were part animal, they struck something inside of him as well. Even when the humans invaded them, they never killed anyone who wasn't directly attacking them, and that definately wasn't the case when humans warred each other. It just appalled him how such creatures, who were clearly more intelligent and definitely more honourable then humans, had their peaceful lives ruined by the horrible people who just acted out of spite and envy.
When he had arrived home, he talked with Liz about it, and she supported him in the decision of getting a Reklan.
"We can give them a better home than anyone else can. They'll be a lot more happy here than whatever prison cell they're being held in right now", comforted Liz. "Once you get one you can tell the guys at work to bugger off, and I could definitely use more hands to do the housework. And the garden is getting pretty messy as well."
As she was finishing the last sentence she pointed out the back window looking onto the garden. It really was a mess, with brambles and long grass plaguing the rear of the garden, and the grass at the front didn't look like it had been tended to in a while either.
"I suppose so", Dan replied. It seemed as if they were going to get a Reklan then, and try to give it as good a place to stay as possible.
-
"I'm sorry about the whole issue downstairs, Liz", Dan said dejectedly. "What the guys have said at work must have caught up with me."
Liz's eyes were immediately filled with sympathy and relief for her partner not having turned into one of those slaver monsters.
"I'm sorry for shouting at you too. You are right about them not being able to stay in the guest room though, but they can't stay in that thing."
Liz gestured to what could only be described as the product of a three year old's drawing, sitting in the back of the garden.
"Yeah, I guess you're right", Dan said dejectedly. He knew it wasn't very good at all, but he still felt sad at the fact that his 'masterpiece' wasn't up to scratch. "I'll see to buying a proper one in the morning."
"Don't bother about that, we still have that spare room, don't we?"
"I think so", replied Dan.
The spare room as far as they could remember had been left untouched since they had bought the house. It was apparantly used as an extra guest room by the previous owners (Why they needed two guest rooms, the couple didn't know). It had no furniture in it, but that could be easily sorted out and the bathroom attached would just need a good clean before it could be used again.
"Good, we could get started on that tomorrow!", exclaimed Liz, finally happy about something. "But for now I think we need some rest."
Dan numbly agreed. Liz had never been this dominant before, but the lifting of some of the pressure was a welcome relief to him. Let's just hope tomorrow goes a bit better than today, they both thought.
-
The fox had a dilemma.
He had rested the female down onto the bed and was now sitting over her, trying to figure out the best way to proceed. If he left her there and let her wake up in the morning, there would be no telling of how stressed she would be. So that left the other choice, try to wake her up now and hope she doesn't make too much noise when he explains what is going on. Here goes nothing, the fox thought.
"Hey, wake up"
The female didn't respond, so the fox decided to step it up a notch. He gently took her muzzle and shook it slightly. It seemed as if the girl wouldn't respond again, but he was quickly corrected when her eyes opened wide, radiating very large amounts of fear.
"Shh, it's okay", the fox consoled.
The female started to struggle, nearly breaking out of the fox's grip before he could get hold of her again, his hand clamping her muzzle shut so she couldn't scream out. Once she had realised he meant no harm and calmed down, the fox continued talking.
"Now I'm going to remove my hand from your muzzle, so don't scream out, ok?"
The female nodded as much as the fox's restraint allowed, and the fox released his grip. The female gasped for breath, the fox scorning himself for not being gentle enough. He must have stopped her breathing after grabbing her muzzle too tightly in his own panic as it took a while before her breathing rate calmed down to a normal pace again. She looked around a bit before responding in a hushed tone.
"Where am I?"
The fox got his hand ready to clamp down in the case of her wanting to scream again.
"We're in our new masters' house", the fox replied.
To his surprise the vixen didn't try to scream or escape, instead giving a dejected nod along with a comment.
"I thought just as much. But what kind of owner puts their slaves in a room like this?"
"I don't know", the fox said. "A very kind one?"
"I guess so", the vixen replied. "We definately struck gold when it comes to getting a kind owner."
"Well actually it's two owners."
The fox proceeded to fil out the vixen on all the details she had missed out on while she was unconscious, paying particular attention to Dan and how he behaved.
"Do you think he'll be ok?", the fox asked.
"I don't know, but it seems like he's just a bit overwhelmed at the idea of having two lives, let alone two sapient lives, under his command", the vixen suggested. "He might have even been pressured into getting us, which might not be such a good thing if the people who pressured him into getting us also want him to treat us harshly."
"Thanks for the insight, but now I think we'll have to get some sleep. They said they wanted us down by nine, which is quite late, but I definately don't want to take any chances."
The vixen nodded her consent and slowly slid under the sheets of the bed, but only after removing her clothes. The fox was surprised she was so open about being naked, but then they were going to be living together for the rest of their lives. The fox carefully climbed in next to her, opting to remove only his top before falling back into the comfortable embrace of the thick, plush pillows.
The fox was just about to drift off to sleep when the femenine voice sounded out from beside him.
"I never actually had a brother", reminisced the vixen. "Could you be my brother?"
The fox felt a knot of emotion tie up in his chest. He had never had a sister either, and definately wouldn't mind having one. He could feel the vixen's nude body snuggle up next to him, staring up into his eyes as he looked down at her.
"Yes", he replied. By now his tears were running freely down his face. "Yes, I will be your brother."
The fox could feel his whole body starting to shake from exhaustion. The fox hadn't realised how much had happened in that one day, and now the activity was coming back to haunt him. Next to him however he could feel the soft body of his newly proclaimed sister, starting her descent into the dark abyss of dreamless sleep. The fox closed his eyes and gently rested himself down again.
"Goodnight, sister", he said as he was pulled slowly into the darkness of sleep, but with a new speck of light on the horizon. Yes, he thought. Things definately might turn out for the better after all.
