#5 of Wren

What we believe

Lance and Wren sat there in the car, watching quietly as the police circled the house. Wren became seriously worried.

"What are they doing?" She whispered to Lance.

Lance did not answer. He just sat there watching the police search the house. Mr. Baxter was crossing his arms and standing in front of the house. Suddenly, a police officer walked out of the house carrying something. It was one of Wrens art pieces made from wood.

"No! Don't touch that!" Wren screamed. It suddenly caught the police's and Mr. Baxter's attention.

Wren quickly got out of the car.

"Wren, no. Get back inside." Whispered Lance.

But Wren didn't listen. She quickly flew over to the police officer in panic. The officer jumped back in fear and let go of the item. Luckily Wren flew fast enough to catch the wooden piece before it fell to the floor. She breath heavily, then calmed down.

"That was close." She said. "It took me such a long time to make this."

She then seemed to display the piece in front of the officer. The police were stunned at first, but immediately pulled out their firearms and aimed at Wren. Wren stepped back in fear.

"Eww, what is that thing?" Said Mr. Baxter.

Lance quickly got out of his car and screamed.

"No! Don't shoot! Don't shoot!" He said.

The attention was now on Lance as he ran in front of Wren, begging the officers not to shoot.

"Lance?" Mr. Baxter said in shock. "What the heck is going on here?"

Lance took a moment to catch his breath as Wren trembled behind her. Everyone stood stone still. No one uttered a sound. Just staring. Lance finally got to the point of talking.

"This....this has been a big misunderstanding."

Mr. Baxter still stood there confused.

"What do you mean?" He said. "You left me a message saying that you were....kidnapped or something?"

Wren stopped trembling and was now in shock.

"Kidnapped?" She said. "Is that what you think I did?"

"No no!" Said Lance. "No, that's not what I meant."

"What do you mean? You said you were trapped in a monster's house." Said Mr. Baxter.

"Monster?!" Said Wren in anger.

"No, not monster." Said Lance.

"Yea, you said that she took your car and stuff and was probably going to eat you." Said Mr. Baxter, having a little fun with the story.

"You thought I would eat you?!" Said Wren, her anger turning to sadness.

Lance just stood there speechless.

"I....I thought we were friends. I thought you had fun." Said Wren looking down.

"No, I did have fun. It was amazing, the town is amazing, you're amazing." Said Lance.

"I thought I was a monster." Said Wren.

She turned her back to lance. Then Mr. Baxter interrupted.

"Well, this has been nice, but we have work to do and this little birdie is getting in the way." He said.

He winked at the officers. Both of them aimed their guns at Wren again.

I don't think so." Said Wren.

She quickly spread out her wings. As the officers were about to shoot, her wings pushed out a huge gust of wind that blinded everyone. Leaves and dirt covered the whole area. Lance fell to the floor. In a matter of seconds, the gust was gone and so was Wren. Everyone looked around frantically.

"What the heck?!" Said Mr. Baxter.

Even Lance was stunned.

"Eh, it doesn't matter." Said Mr. Baxter. "Finish emptying the house so we can tear it down!"

"What?!" Yelled Lance as he got back up.

"You heard me. After we tear this house down, we can turn this whole area into our next mall."

Lance ran to Mr. Baxter and said.

"You can't.....you...this is someone's home. She lives here!"

Mr. Baxter chuckled and said. "Who cares about one little bird? She'll be forgotten in a day."

"You don't know her." Said Lance.

"And I don't care." Answered Mr. Baxter.

He then walked to his car and sat inside.

"Now stay here and make sure everything goes as planned. I'm going to get the bulldozer." He said.

Lance clenched his fist and stood there. He was angry, angry enough to do something crazy, maybe even something stupid, but he was willing to do something.

"No, I won't." He said.

Mr. Baxter paused and said.

"Excuse me?"

"I said no. I'm not going to let you do this to an innocent......bird...this is her home. We have no place here."

Mr. Baxter was speechless, but then he grinned and said.

"Okay then, you're fired."

Lance froze.

"Wha...what!"

"You're fired. You want to be a bird lover, then go ahead. I don't need you anyways." Said Mr. Baxter as he started his car.

Lance was furious.

"After everything I did for you?!" He yelled.

"I'm sure I can find another Lance." Laughed Mr. Baxter.

He drove off through the trees. Lance screamed in anger. He didn't know what else to do. He stood there, clenched fist, and staring at the ground. His heart was heavy and tears began to run across his cheeks.

"I'm.....I'm sorry....Wren." He thought to himself. He then wiped the tears from his face and said. "I will fix this. I promise."

He quickly turned around and ran to his car. He slammed the door when he got in and started the engine. He swerved the car around and bolted through the dirt road.

"But first...." He said. "I need some help."

Once he finally reached the town, he headed straight to the library to find the fox brothers. The car's tires screeched against the ground as he reached the front of the building. He looked out the window to see the calm sun setting slowly behind a couple of buildings. He hurried out of his car and forced the library doors open.

"We're closing soon, just to let you know!" Said Trent from the middle of the library. Lance then ran to the desk where the two brothers were. He panted as he reached them. The two brothers became worried.

"Lance?" Said J.C. "What are you doing here? What's wrong?"

Lance caught his breath and said.

"It's Wren. She's in trouble and I need your help."

"What?!" Yelled Trent. He then grabbed his shirt menacingly and said. "What did you do?"

Lance swallowed nervously then said.

"My boss. He wants to tear down the whole forest. I tried to convince him he can't, but he is doing it before anyone realizes. He's bringing the bulldozer tonight to destroy Wren's home."

Trent and J.C. became very worried. Trent let go of Lances shirt and said.

"Where's Wren?"

"I don't know." Said Lance. "The police tried to shoot her and she disappeared."

"They did what!" Said J.C.

Everyone was silent, until Lance finally said.

"Look....I need your help."

"Why should we trust you?" Said Trent.

"Because this might be our only chance to save Wren." Said Lance.

The two brothers froze. They looked at each other in fear.

"What do you want us to do?" Asked J.C. willingly.

Lance almost smiled a little, but stayed focused and said.

"Call as many people as you can and meet me at Wren's house. Tell them to be prepared to protect their home....and a friend."

Both of the brothers nodded their head in agreement. Lance nodded his head too, but quickly ran out of the library. He got in his car and frantically searched for his phone. After going through the papers and folders, he finally found it. As he dialed the phone he could see Trent and J.C. running out of the library screaming.

"Stop what you're doing! Wren needs our help!" They screamed.

Lance then opened the window and called out to the panicking foxes.

"Guys!" He said. The two foxes look at him. "Maybe you should ask people a little bit more calmly."

The two brothers looked at each other and laughed a little.

"Uh....maybe he's right." Said Trent.

The brothers called out to more people more calmly as instructed.

Suddenly, someone answered the phone.

"Hello, channel 10 news." A voice said.

"Hello news, are you familiar with Mr. Baxter?" Said Lance.

"Uh, of course. He's a business tycoon. Why?"

Lance smiled and said.

"Well, I have got a story for you."

Meanwhile, deep in the now dark forest, Wren was perched in the tallest of trees. She was hanging her head down and looking at the ground below her. Her eyes were closed and her wings drooped down around her. She felt that she had made a mistake.

"I tried to make things better, I tried to save everyone, but I failed." She thought. "I should've never trusted Lance. I should've just stayed home."

She laid her head against the trunk of the tree and even though the forest stood quiet, her cries echoed through the trees. But, suddenly, her cries weren't the only sound echoing. Wren raised her head to the sound of a large machine's engine. She looked in the direction of the sound and saw an area of the forest lit up. It was the bulldozer. Mr. Baxter was back. Wren stood up on the tree branch confidently and said.

"I may make mistakes....,but this is still my home, and I will protect it."

She raised her wings and soared into the sky, racing back to Mr. Baxter as fast as she could.

Great tension was starting to build as Mr. Baxter's bulldozer was nearing the forest. The bulldozer was escorted by a group of police cars and, sitting in the bulldozer's driving seat was the operator and Mr. Baxter.

"That's it." Instructed Mr. Baxter. "Right to the bridge."

"What are we tearing down again?" Asked the operator.

"A kidnapper's home....that's all you need to know." Answered Mr. Baxter.

"Why we need to destroy it?"

"I thought I said that's all you need to know. No shut up and drive."

The operator stayed silent and kept driving.

The bulldozer was slowly reaching the beginning of the bridge, but soon, Mr. Baxter and his men could hear a large group of people in the direction of the bridge. Small mumbles soon became bolstering chants.

"Leave us be! Leave us be!" They chanted.

Then, once the bulldozer reached the bridge, a large group of people and anthropomorphic animals were standing in front of them, blocking the entrance to the bridge. All of them were citizens of Cherrywood, except for one man who stood on top of his car and led the whole thing. This man was Lance. The bulldozer and the police cars stopped in front of the crowd.

Mr. Baxter chuckled and said.

"Oh look. Very cute Lance."

He then hopped out of the bulldozer and walked to the crowd. The group still chanted as he walked closer. Soon, Mr. Baxter was right in front of the group. Lance then calmed the group down and stared down at Mr. Baxter.

"Lance, what is all this?" Asked Mr. Baxter in a joking matter.

"This?" Said Lance. "This is your last chance. You have no right to destroy this place and you know it."

Mr. Baxter laughed again, rudely staring at every protestor.

"Maybe your forgetting all the proof I have." He said.

"You have nothing Baxter. You just don't realize it, but I do." Said Lance.

"Oh really?" Said Mr. Baxter. "This bird.....Wren.....isn't even a true citizen. We checked the whole house, no deed, no nothing."

"That's because I have it!" Yelled a voice.

The crowd looked and saw that the voice was Charlotte. She climbed on top of the car with Lance holding multiple pieces of paper.

"It's all here. The deed, her citizenship, everything. She left it with me for safe keeping." She said.

Mr. Baxter still smiled and said.

"You better hope that those aren't fake or you'll be going to jail like the rest of these...rats."

Charlotte became furious, but Lance calmed her down.

"Oh they're real." Said Lance.

Mr. Baxter still didn't loose his smile.

"Okay, so what if she is a citizen, we still have a charge on her for kidnapping." He said.

"It's funny how the one who was kidnapped didn't call the police." Said Lance.

Mr. Baxter chuckled and said.

"Ha! I don't need you. I got the phone call. I can charge anyone."

Lance smiled.

"That's nice." He said. "But I have witnesses."

The whole crowd then cheered loudly for Lance.

Mr. Baxter was starting to get annoyed. He waited for the crowd to stop, but they didn't. He then began to scream.

"Alright, alright shut up! All of you!" He yelled.

The crowd stopped.

"Look Lance! I don't know what kind of game your trying to play here, but get this! I already won! I always win! You and your pathetic friends have no chance!"

Lance just stood there and let Mr. Baxter go on his tirade. Mr. Baxter continued.

"Now I'm gonna arrest all of you, and I'm gonna take this bulldozer and tear down your precious forest along that stupid bird house! Then, when I'm done with that, I'm going for Cherrywood! This whole dump belongs to me now!....and I don't need any evidence or reason! Because all these cops work for me! Not you! Me!"

Everyone was silent. Some were scared of Mr. Baxter's rant, even the police, but not Lance. He just stood there, with a straight face, and standing stone still. Mr. Baxter was panting. After he caught his breath, he then said.

"So....Lance. What do you have to say now!"

Everyone then looked at Lance, waiting for a response. Lance began to smile.

"So, did you get all of that Jason?" Said Lance.

Jason then walked to the front of the group and pulled out his tape recorder.

"I got every word." He said. "There's nothing better than a grade A musical recorder to get the confession you want."

Jason then looked at Mr. Baxter and winked. Mr. Baxter just smiled and said.

"Nice job kid. Too bad there's no one here to hear it."

"Actually, we'll take that." Said a voice. Suddenly, the channel 10 news crew walked out of Lance's car and stared at Mr. Baxter.

"It will make an interesting story for tomorrow." Said one of the people in the news crew.

"I agree." Said Lance.

Suddenly, all the police officers and the bulldozer operator had very worried looks on their faces. Mr. Baxter became very furious. He then pointed at Lance and said.

"You think this is over?" Lance just looked down at him and smiled. Then Mr. Baxter continued. "It's only over when I bulldoze all of you alive!"

Mr. Baxter then pushed some police officers to the ground and ran for the bulldozer.

"Stop him!" screamed one police officer.

The crowd became fearful, including Lance. Some people began to back away from the bulldozer. Mr. Baxter still charged for it, getting closer and closer to it. A few people began to run. Police officers stood there, worried. Then, Mr. Baxter was climbing back up the bulldozer.

"I don't think so." Said a very feminine voice.

Mr. Baxter froze and looked towards the voice. Suddenly, a large creature with a long wingspan soared towards Mr. Baxter. He then screamed as the creature grabbed his shirt and carried him away. Everyone was afraid at first, but when they saw sky blue wings flapping in the air, they new it was Wren. Mr. Baxter kicked and screamed.

"Let me go! What is this thing?!" He screamed.

"I am Wren, the blue bird." Wren answered. "This is my home...and you are not welcome."

She then flew over the crowd to the nearest tree. Mr. Baxter screamed even louder. Then, when Wren flew over the tree, she let go of Mr. Baxter's shirt. Mr. Baxter fell down into the tree until a branch was caught in his shirt. He dangled off the tree branch and struggled to get free. The whole crowd cheered at Mr. Baxter's embarrassment. Lance just stared at him and smiled.

"Hey Boss!" He said. "I win!"

Soon the police officers walked over to Mr. Baxter and said.

"Bradley Baxter, you're under arrest."

All Mr. Baxter could do is sigh.

Lance and Charlotte then hopped off the car. Then Trent, J.C., and Jason all joined them. Charlotte then kissed Jason and thanked him. Trent and J.C. hugged. Soon, Wren slowly flew down to her friends. The crowd still cheering for her. Wren landed in front of the group of friends and they all huddled together for a hug.

"Welcome back Wren." Said Lance.

"Good to be back." Said Wren.

"You did it Wren." Said Charlotte. "You really did it. You saved Cherrywood."

"No." Said Wren. "We saved Cherrywood. I just made you believe."

The whole group hugged again. Wren giggled a little. It was a beautiful moment.

"Uh...so." Said Trent. "What happens know?"

***

Four months have past and everything has changed for the better. The once vacant bridge to Cherrywood was now bustling with cars. The small town of Cherrywood was now more populated than ever, all thanks to very intriguing landmark. A so called "protector of the forest". Some even called her "the goddess of the forest". Although, her well known friends know her as Wren the blue bird.

Jason's music store now has great business, especially since he now offers lessons to many kids. Charlotte has been receiving many costumers with great appetites. Even people from the city are visiting the restaurant and all agree that Charlotte is the hardest worker. Trent and J.C. are now having the best time running the library together. With story time for kids and many new parties, the library has changed from being the "old library" to being a "fun zone" in Cherrywood. Lance actually decided to move to Cherrywood and start a business of his own. He now works for a company the focuses on preserving nature and protecting the wildlife. As for our lovely Wren, she is now back to relaxing and exploring her great forest and welcomes anyone that wishes to join her.

And that is the story of one bird that stood for what she believed in, no matter what. This is the story of Wren.
