#10 of Chronicles of the Lost One

Just the next chapter. i've had this done for a while but i didn't have internet access with the move. comment, rate, enjoy!

*NOTE: I did a little reworking of this chapter. Personally I think it flows a little better than the original did. It didn't change very much... more just changes to dialogue. The only major changes I'm doing are to chapters that have not been submitted yet.

A small crowd started to gather inside the control room. Many of the women were curious as to why the alarms began going off and some of them were in a panic. It didn't help much when they got there and looked out the window to see a grouping of ships headed right for them. Many of them were trying to get Sam to turn around and evade the grouping but she was hell bent on destroying them.

"That is a Vey'Ral colony out to destroy another planet! If you can't handle being up here, go back to the commons and wait it out." Sam started up her scanners to see what she was up against. The large ships had hundreds of landing craft all set up and ready to go for an invasion but had minimal guns at their disposal. Hundreds of small fighter craft were flying around the ships, though, and many of them were breaking off to head towards Sam. Readouts were coming in for each ship and Sam couldn't help but grin. Nothing was designed to take on a ship like hers. At the flick of her wrist, all weapons and combat drones were set to arm and ready. She didn't fire anything and didn't launch any of the drones. She was going to wait until they were too close to turn back. As the ships were getting closer she received a hail from the largest of the ships. She brought the screen up and saw a high ranking Vey'Ral.

Amazingly he spoke a language she knew, "thank you for delivering this buffet to us. A ship full of females! Lay down your arms and we will not hurt you."

The attacking ships were within range to open fire and Sam could feel small shudders in the hull when larger missiles hit her shields. She just smiled and flipped him the middle finger, "fuck off."

Almost immediately the screen went black as a bright beam of energy lit up space outside her window. The giant carrier exploded into a shower of molten metal and flame. Any smaller ships near the blast succumbed as well, buckling and collapsing into little balls of metal. Sam opened fire on the rest of the ships quickly to make sure they couldn't run away, focusing her weapons 2-5 guns per ship to take them down quickly. The Dreadnaught was kept charged and firing at the large capital class ships that were used for landing since they were too large for her other guns to take out quickly. All around her the ships were blowing up from her cannons penetrating their drive cores.

Some of the women watched in fascination as ships exploded in their view. Others huddled in corners and cried to each other. It wasn't long before the large invasion force was reduced to floating rubble drifting through space. Hundreds of small rubble clusters floated around with maybe fifty larger clusters and the seven capital ships were reduced to space dust from the dreadnaught cannon.

Sam surveyed the damages. 77% shields left, weapons capacitors down to 20% charge, fifteen drones lost. Not a bad first battle at all. A few of the women were behind her crying but most had been at awe over the sheer destructive capabilities of the ship. An entire fleet of ships destroyed in minutes. 500 fighters, 75 cruisers, 20 destroyers, and 7 carriers all downed. Sam was practically bouncing in glee as she commanded all of her salvage drones to clean up the mess. She figured she had enough room in her hangar to store most of the debris while the salvage drones sorted out everything. While she set about cleaning the mess she got a hail from the planet she was intending on heading to.

Sam answered in Linley's language, "good evening. How may I help you?"

A stern looking badger was on the other line, "we saw the carnage from here. Care to explain what just happened?"

"I hailed them not knowing they were Vey'Ral. They saw through my video that I had a ship full of women and got excited. They obviously didn't know what they were getting into and they paid for it. Besides, I have a huge problem with Vey'Ral. Bugs that need to be exterminated."

"Well I won't lie. Once that cluster got into sensor range we were slightly worried. So thank you for that. So the report we received on you says you have a ship full of women?"

"Indeed. 76 women all pregnant. They were stored on this very ship until I came along. Thirty of them want to be brought down to the Office of the Lost to be sent home. The rest want me to take them home. How close am I allowed to get to the planet so that I can offload the ones who want off? Maybe I could get a representative from the Office to speak with regarding the remaining?"

"I will see what I can arrange. You are cleared to orbit at 20,000 miles. We will hail your ship once we have things arranged."

The screen blinked out before Sam could respond. She thought it rude but at the same time she wasn't getting a very good impression of badger men. The fox men seemed to be rather good diplomats and were much more approachable though. She had a silent hope that one of the fox were assigned to assist her. Sam just shrugged it off and started the primary thrusters.

Nobody was ready for the lurch the ship made as the thrusters engaged. Most everyone on the ship was thrown to the floor or into a nearby wall as the ship took off at 10G's at only 30% power. Sam quickly reduced the power as she clung to the chair she had been standing next to and surveyed the damages. All of the women who had been in the control room were slowly getting up and glaring at Sam. She could only manage a quiet oops as she left the room to seek out her own bedroom.

The ship told her the room for the ship's captain was close by and would only open to one who had the implant. She stalked around and followed the directions, which were rather convoluted, around a complex set of pathways and access tunnels. Supposedly the easiest way was also a rather long distance so she opted for the short path for now. She made a mental note to have a direct path installed once she had the ship cleared out and started remodeling.

It took a few minutes but she finally arrived at the room. A small eye on the door turned green when she walked up and the doors opened with a quiet hiss. The room didn't seem like very much with a simple queen sized bed and single dresser on the side. She stepped in and was instantly marveled at how soft and plush the carpet was. She was always barefoot but the carpet felt like it was massaging her feet as she walked around. The comforter on the bed had a similar quality and felt like water across the pads of her hands. She was thoroughly impressed and stepped over to the bathroom and was in complete awe when it opened. It didn't even look like a bathroom. Instead it looked like scenery from a tropical jungle. The shower was a short waterfall into a ten foot wide pool at the bottom and the sink was a trickle of water from the side into a shallow basin. The whole thing was very peaceful and relaxing. Sam would have went right in if she had the time but they were coming up on the planet and she needed to be available. Sam made a ship wide announcement for anyone who was departing here or at another planet to head to the hangars.

Sam traveled to the hangar with a sparse group of women who mostly had found clothing. She entered the hangar to see most of the women had already made it there and were lined up near a ship dock. As if on cue the little robot floated up in front of her and brought up a screen with the same badger man. He didn't look too happy but then again when did he ever?

"We have a transport inbound to your ship to pick up the thirty who wish to go planetside. The local Office of the Lost officer is also aboard the ship and will discuss things with you about employment. I wasn't too sure what he meant but I'm sure he'll disclose that with you. Maintain your distance and everything should run smoothly."

Sam just nodded and closed the screen to look through the windows into the bay. Her salvage drones had worked a large chunk of the salvaged ships down and it looked to be only half the size it was before. She could see them still working busily, cutting chunks of material out and removing machinery as though they were alive. She marveled at their efficiency while the women around her gossiped about things they had seen on the ship.

Finally her proximity sensors went off and the bay doors opened to permit the transport into the bay. It was automatically tractored right to the spot she was standing next to and docked quickly. Large magnetic locks reached out and held the ship in place as the air locks were put in place. Sam waited and watched as a single person walked out of the ship. There was a murmur as most of the women recognized what it was before Sam. She just watched patiently as a tall draconic individual stepped out into the bay. Sam thought this person looked strange with their draconic features and fur instead of scales. She did notice rather quickly, however, the two large wings that sprouted from its side like hers did. He finally noticed her and his facial expression changed rather quickly as he started shouting things into a communicator he had with him. Everyone looked around confused since no one understood his language.

By the time he finished yelling at whoever was on the other end of the communicator he had to shake his head. He walked straight up to Sam and looked her in the eyes. She suddenly felt a small pull in her mind as she stared him right back. She felt such an inflow of languages from him it was almost overwhelming. Eventually he broke the silence and spoke in English, "you have picked up many languages for someone so young. This is your first?"

Sam though, replied in his first language: Drakornan. "Yes. And I believe this is your first. You are the first Drakornan I've met so far."

He switched back to Drakornan as well, "most of us don't get out much. I didn't feel the desire to prove myself to the others and found peace among the lesser races. You, however, should not exist. By all that our people live by you should never have been made. Alas, there were a few made but they had been exterminated. You are an enigma."

"I have learned little as to my origins. You are here about everyone else in the room anyways, not me. I've already dealt with the Office of the Lost once and I must say, I was not impressed."

"There is a certain corruption in everything. It can never quite be rooted out. Threats and incentives can be quite influential. So you have 79 women here who wish to leave?"

"Well, there was 76 but I guess three from the ship across the way have made their way here to return home. Either way, most of them wanted me to take them home. Does the Office offer compensation to those who transport?"

"We do. I cannot guarantee it will be enough to support such a large craft but I can assume that this ship is fully self sufficient. It does look familiar though."

"You may have seen it before. It is a Drakornan craft. An old one but still one."

"I thought it looked familiar. What are your intentions with it?"

"Once I drop off these women I'm doing some remodeling. This is a war ship and I have full intention of upholding that purpose."

"May the odds forever be in your favor, then. Do you have an account I can transfer the money into?"

"Nothing. I've barely been off the planet I was born in for a week."

"Very well. We will set you one up. I will issue you the codes and cards for it once my associates complete it." He spoke for a minute, much more gently this time, into his communicator before continuing, "okay. The cards and codes are being printed on my ship right now. Will all of the women who wish to leave now please board my craft and find a seat." He repeated the last bit in several languages so that everyone heard him.

Sam turned away and was about to disappear behind a large door when he stopped her again, "I have just one request before I leave. I know you are half Drakornan, can I see your family marking?"

Sam just looked at him funny, "what family marking?"

"Every Drakorna family has a particular fur pattern. I was hoping to see yours so I can see which family you are from." Sam looked at him incredulously but just shrugged and removed her dress. His face fell once he saw her pattern and he shook a bit, "I am glad I do not follow Drakorna's customs. If you did not kill me I'm sure your mother would have. You will understand if you ever go to Draknaliz. Take care of your charges, they could use the assistance of one as strong as you."

Sam watched as he quickly turned around to shuffle the last few women still waiting around into the ship. A Raklith came out of the ship a moment later at a very fast pace and handed Sam an envelope. They eyed Sam for a moment before heading back into the ship again without a word. She thought about it for a second and realized she was attracted to the female Raklith she had just seen. With their short stature she thought it strange but they were cute. She just shrugged it off and headed to the engineering bay.

Sam was happy to find one of the engineers working on the medical robots. She wanted to talk to them about a few things. She approached at a leisurely stroll and noticed they were lost deep in thought. Sam watched for a few minutes until she saw a tear roll down her cheek.

Sam walked a little heavy to make noise as she approached. Sam hadn't gotten her name yet but she was still concerned, "hey, you doing alright?"

Even with the noise she still jumped when Sam spoke, "oh! Sorry. Yeah, I was just thinking about what I'm going to do about this baby those Vey'Ral gave me. It makes me really want to go home but I don't want to leave you hanging out here."

Sam couldn't help but chuckle, "you know, that's exactly what I wanted to talk to you two about. Your friend isn't here but I'm sure you could tell me what she would think. I really need those robots fixed but if you two would be willing, I have an idea that would let you two go home and allow me to fix my own problems." Her ears definitely perked up at the idea, "if you could build me at least one engineering robot, I could use it to fix everything I need. You two are quite good with robots so it shouldn't be an issue. It makes me wonder why it isn't already available. If you two could do it I will take you anywhere you want."

She gave it a lot of thought. Sam figured she was designing it in her head while she waited. When a grin crossed her features, Sam figured they would do it. She stood up a little straighter with a big smile, "yeah, I think we can do it. It would be a high precision low strength robot but it shouldn't have any trouble with whatever you throw at it. And you would take us where ever we want to go afterwards?"

"Anywhere you want to go. Of course assuming it works."

"Oh it'll work. It'll be a masterpiece. I can't wait to tell Cathy."

"Oh speaking of, what is your name? We've never even brought up the subject."

"Oh! I'm sorry. My name is Kelly."

"Kelly and Cathy. Both popular names from the planet I'm from. Not something I expected to hear out here. I can see you're excited. Go talk to Cathy and let her know. I'm sure you'll both love to go home."

Sam smiled as Kelly skipped off to go share the good news. She did have a little pang of sadness though. It seemed like no one wanted to stay with her. Perhaps someone would take a liking to her and stick around. Sam just shrugged and started working on redesigning the interior of the ship to suit her better. There would be time later to worry about friends.
