Memories: Part Five
#5 of Memories
Alright! This is the second last part to my memories series, so while it a rather short part, a lot happens in this scene. rate, Comment, and once again enjoy the series!
Cybil finally returns home and promises Alex that she will return the next morning. Meanwhile, Alex finally has his mother come over but learns that she has brought with her someone he didn't want to see. After a short talk, he learns why he has no memories of his past.
Sometimes, people need to see for their own eyes to believe. However, most will still not believe in what they have seen simply because of this saying I have come across in one of my favourite books: "People Are Stupid, and they will believe only what they wish to believe."
-Alexander Durley
The first thing Alex noticed was that the bed felt strangely empty. Opening his yes, he realized that he was right and that the spot next to him was empty. He sat up, propping himself up with his fore arm as he looked around for a moment. Was it all just a dream? If it was, Alex certainly wanted to go back to sleep.
There was no way he wanted to live knowing that such a wonderful person did not exist. But even if it was a dream, Alex didn't think he would commit suicide, he would probably go downstairs, eat breakfast, and get drunk once more.
"Cybil?" He called out, hoping that the last few days weren't a dream..
"Right here."
"AH!" Alex screamed, jumping in his bed as he turned to see Cybil standing in front of the mirror, her face looking over her shoulder at him as he took deep breaths. "JeeZUS! You scared me Cybil!"
Cybil chuckled as she walked over and gave him a peck on the cheek. "Good morning to you too." She said, nuzzling against him for a moment before turning back to the mirror. Alex watched her curiously before he finally asked her what she was up to.
"Oh, It's time for me to go home." She replied as Alex stood up and placed a shirt with a Disturbed band logo imprinted on it. He suddenly had a sad look on him as he walked over to Cybil.
"Sigh. I was expecting this, so I have no choice." He said as he shrugged. He suddenly gave her a hug and the two kissed. "I'll miss you Cyb."
"Cyb?" She asked, raising an eyebrow at the nickname. Alex only grinned.
"What no nickname?" He asked, pulling away from her with a laugh. She only had a curious look on her.
"No, no, not that it's just..." She looked up at him with a sad smile on her face. "...You used to call me that back when we were kids."
Alex walked up and held her in his arms. "I was wondering why it seemed so familiar."
They sat there for a moment than it was Cybil who pulled away this time. She walked up to the mirror and placed her hand on the reflective glass, causing a warm glow to come forth as well as a hum. Soon, the glow fade to show a room that was a bedchamber. Alex immediately assumed that it was hers.
"Will you come back Cybil?" He asked, walking up next to her. She looked at him with a smile.
"Of course Alex. I'll be back by tomorrow, at eleven in the morning." She replied as she began to walk into the mirror. It seemed like she was walking through water, as the area around her rippled. The she was on the other side, looking back at him as he watched sadly.
"I'll wait for you Cybil." He called out as the mirror seemed to slowly return to normal, starting from the bottom. Before her face disappeared, Alex heard her whisper: "I know you will." And then she was gone.
He sat there in silence, watching the mirror for a good minute before turning around where he began to change the sheets on his bed. He didn't fold them up neatly; he just tossed them down a chute that lead to a laundry room downstairs. Once they were removed, he replaced the sheets with new ones from a closet at the end of the hallway. Smiling, Alex turned and went downstairs where he went into a door to a different part of the house.
He's eyes met a room filled with what had to be thousands of pictures and boxes. Near the far end of the room, a desk was lying there and Alex made his way slowly towards it. Sitting down, Alex pulled out a 4 h lead pencil and drew a circle on a plain piece of canvas paper. Once done, he took a slightly deeper coloured pencil and began to draw a rough outline.
After a few hours of constant drawing, erasing and more drawing, Alex finally leaned back to admire his work. Before him lay a drawing of Cybil. He chuckled at it, for was oddly his finest work, the way the crest on her head looked and the almost human eyes of a dragon, and yet... he felt slightly clingy towards her now. So he found it luck when he heard the doorbell ring and he stood up to get it. Opening the door he was greeted by the smile of his mother.
And the frown of his step-father.
His happiness almost immediately went down the drain when he saw John even though he hadn't even done anything yet. John was roughly six foot one and was considered handsome by many, even those that were younger than him. Of course, this was do to the fact that his face could only be described as 'carved by angel' and his blond hair and blue eyes only added to it. Alex was buffer in appearance then his step father was but this deceived many as John was a strong man, able lift the front of a car if he wanted to.
"What is he doing here?" he asked his mother as she hugged him. John snorted.
"I'm here because your mother figured that if it was really that important, then I should come too." He replied, brushing past Alex and into the living room where he sat in the lounging chair. Alex and Amanda followed the man and took their own seats on the couch.
"So Alex, what is so important?" his mother asked as he sat down. Alex only sighed deeply at her.
"Mom..." he began slowly, dreading of asking her the following question. "...did I...did I have amnesia when I was a kid or something."
John suddenly leaned forward. "Why do you ask Alex?"
Alex shot a glare at him. "I asked my mother not you." He growled. "But since you're here I may as well say it: I have been having strange dreams lately, whether they are a nightmare or not, I do not know."
Amanda seemed to be trying to hide something as Alex spoke. "What sort of...dreams?" She asked slowly.
"A dream where I'm running...from a girl I think, but every time I turn to look at her all I see is a blur and then... I wake up." Alex sighed. "And then I suddenly remembered this song that I swore I never heard of."
Amanda and John only stared at the boy, but what John said next caused Alex absolute horror.
"It ain't amnesia Alex." John said slowly, emotionless. Alex looked over to see his step father with a blank face.
"Then what the hell is it?" he questioned.
"Me and Amanda... had a hypnotist put you in a trance then wiped your memories." John leaned back in his seat a thoughtful look on him as Alex felt his fists clench. "Seems they weren't wiped comepletly."
Alex looked at his mother with a bitter look.
"Is this true?" He asked with venom in his voice. Amanda only flinched and looked away, confirming his fears. "My god..."
He darted his eyes back towards John then to his mother. He wanted to scream, to yell, to do something. But all he could was mumble out a simple why.
"We...had no choice Alex." His mother whispered slowly. "We thought you were going insane."
She suddenly sighed. "Seven years ago, we had figured you were acting strangely one day and so we were curious as to why. When we asked, you simply said that you had found the 'love of your life'." She chuckled at the memory. "Yet you would not tell us who this person was, so we did something we thought was smart and told you that we were moving."
"You had a look of horror and exclaimed that 'I cannot leave Cybil! I love her!'" John began, replacing Amanda. "We laughed and you finally told us what we wanted to hear, at least back then we wanted to hear it."
"You said that Cybil was a half-dragon." He finished.
"We instantly knew that something was amiss and we actually went to look for a new house for fear that if we kept you there, the insanity might get worse." Amanda started up once more. "And it was then that we knew that you were going insane but rather then send you to see help..."
"You hired the hypnotist, not wanting to see me degraded as a freak." Alex finished her thought for her as he suddenly had an image of a man wearing a cape sitting in his bedroom waiting for him when he was a child. Behind him, he saw his mother and John watching sadly as Alex was slowly placed into the trance.
"Yes." Amanda sobbed, placing her face in her arms.
Alex looked over at John. "What else have I forgotten?" he asked quietly, barely a whisper.
John did not react in anyway, just spoke. "Have you ever tried to remember who your real father was Alex?" He asked slowly. Alex reacted like a slap, for at that moment, he realized that the memories of his father were a blur. He sat there staring at John grim look as well as the image of the blur of his father then...
The blur disappeared, revealing Johns smiling face.
"No." He suddenly muttered, staring long and hard at John. "No, you can't be my real father. I hate you..."
"Because you learned that the hypnotist was my idea and your final words before your memories were wiped was: 'I will always hate you'." John had tears beginning to stream down his face and Alex watched in shock as the old man began to cry. "And you have, to this very day."
Now it all came flashing into his mind, days spent playing, John and Ale when he was younger playing in the yard, his mother smiling during a birthday... and even his missing memories of Cybil. All of it, rushing into his mind like a torrent of running water and he looked at his parents with a grim look.
"I...wish to be alone." He and his parents stood to leave. Before John left however, Alex grabbed his wrist and the older man looked down at Alex, who did not look up.
"I'm sorry." He apologized suddenly taking in a deep breath. "I'm sorry Dad."
Then John was gone, leaving Alex alone to his thoughts and to his memories. After a moment of staring blankly at the wall, Alex placed his hands over his face cried long and hard as memory after memory rushed him.
He and Cybil were walking in the woods. They were twelve at the time and Alex had lent her some clothes. Both gazed about admiring the view, when he looked over to see Cybil smiling at him.
"Hey Alex, can I tell you something?" She suddenly asked, ausing him to stop.
He smiled back at her. "Sure!" he exclaimed puffing out his chest and placed his hand on his chest. "You can tell me anything Cybil, we're friends aren't we?"
Cybil nodded happily. "Promise not to laugh?"
Alex laughed. "I won't, pinky promise!"
"Umm... well, when I get married I want to do it here, by the lake in your back yard." Alex stopped and stared at her, then giggled.
"Sure! I can let you do that!" He laughed. Cybil's face suddenly brightened with a wide smile and she jumped on him, giving him a hug.
Alex suddenly stopped and chuckled as a new memory came to him.
He and John were outside, both enjoying the sun when John suddenly picked him up. "Where are we going dad?" Alex thought. It was when he was a child and he found the world all too exciting as he continuously got distracted by something like a colourful butterfly, or a simple rock. John chuckled as he held Alex, going down a path that he had cleared from the forest months ago.
"It's your birthday Alex." John laughed, giving the little boy a squeeze. "So I have a gift for you, look!" John pointed up and Alex looked up to see a tree fort.
"WHOA!" Alex exclaimed happily, squirming out of his father's grasp and he quickly climbed the ladder that lead up.
A new memory.
They were thirteen and Alex and Cybil were lying next to each other, both tucked into bed rolls as the two spoke. It was the first night that his parents decided to leave him alone all night long and the two wanted to spend every minute with each other. They spoke throughout most of the night when they finally decided to call it a night in the tree fort his father made him five years back.
It was dark out and Alex was almost asleep when he heard Cybil shuffle. "Alex?" he heard her whisper. "Will we always be friends?"
Alex smiled as he moved to look back at her eyes. He knew he was falling for her, even then. "Always." He smiled as he closed his eye.
Now the tears returned with the next memory.
Alex was standing on the porch, watching as the men continued to move things into the moving truck. He felt sad about moving... but he couldn't place why. He heard the door open behind him and he watched as his mother walked out with a smile, but Alex sensed that it was a hollow smile.
"Ready to go?" She asked him, placing her hand on his shoulder gently. Alex only nodded as she walked down the stairs. He heard the door open yet again and he saw John walk past him.
"Come on Alex, time to go." Alex only snorted.
"Yeah, whatever John." The boy said as he followed the man. Alex saw a pained expression etched on his face, but Alex felt only content at the thought.
Alex had such memories roll over him, and he just sat there on his couch as they came. He cried, laughed, sang, and did so much more as they came across him. Soon they stopped and he looked up, feeling...complete. Then one of the memories came to him and he smiled as he threw a coat on and walked outside. Alex quickly hopped into his car and drove away and into town.
Hours later he had returned with some groceries and he quickly placed it all away when he stopped at a small velvet box. Flipping it open, he admired a golden ring with a large diamond embedded on the top of it. He quickly placed it back in the box and placed the box in one of the counters as he made his way outside. He had a lot of work to do before Cybil came back tomorrow and he wanted it all to be prefect.
Cybil was in for a surprise tomorrow. A very big and a very happy surprise.
