Furry and Proud: Chapter 3
#4 of Furry and Proud
Memories
Waking up that Friday morning wasn't as good as I thought it would be. The weather looked much better, and I had a good weekend coming up, but I just didn't feel right for some reason. Then I figured out what it was. I was still thinking about that question Sam asked me yesterday. She wanted to know why New York was dangerous and I couldn't tell her. Truth is, I don't really remember a lot from New York. It was a busy place, my parents were always working, and I was by myself. I was alone. I was never aloud outside. I would just look out the window in my old room. I would watch the kids go to school, play outside, and some other stuff. But when they looked back at me, they would always show their most terrified faces. Some even threw rocks through my window. Then there was this one night. One night that really sticks out. I stopped myself from remembering it. I didn't want to remember it. I just wanted to forget it.
When I got to school this morning, Sam caught me at the front door.
"Hey." She said.
"Morning." I said back.
"You alright?" She noticed my depressed look. I tried to smile so she wouldn't think something was wrong.
"Yea, I'm good." I said. "I liked your song yesterday."
Sam smiled. "Really, thanks." she said. "I came up with it yesterday morning. I was thinking that we could work on it and perform it for the show."
Then I began to smile. For real this time.
"That's a great idea." I said. "Your song could really be a hit."
Sam hugged me and said. "It's our song now."
I hugged her back. We then came to my locker.
"Alright," Sam said. "I got to go to science. I'll see you at gym."
"See ya." I said back.
I went through the next few classes thinking about that song. Sam seemed to get the lyrics so easy. She must have really felt what she was singing. She dug deep inside of her and let her feelings run free. I'm not like that. I tend to keep my feelings inside to just get through the day. I knew that if I wanted to write my part of the song I needed to let my feelings out, but I just couldn't do it. I don't know if it was because I didn't know how or that I just didn't want to. Maybe I was just making something so simple seem so difficult. I don't know. All I do know is that Sam put a lot of herself in that song and that I should do the same.
5th period came and I was still thinking about the song. So far I had nothing. I also kept tuning the teacher out. History was kind of boring though. The teacher, Mr. Connors, really liked to lecture the class, so I usually ignore him when he talks about stuff I already know. Although today, he caught me staring out the window.
"Eddy." Said Mr. Connors. My attention was then focused on him.
"Yes?" I said.
"Since you seem to have a very good handle on this subject, you probably know which tribes fought against the invading settlers from England."
I knew that question. "The wolf and fox tribes." I said with satisfaction.
"Very good, but which wolf tribe and which fox tribe?" Said Mr. Connors. I froze. I always forget which tribes did what.
"The...leaf tribe?" I said. The whole class laughed.
"Okay, okay everybody calm down. "Said Mr. Connors. "Thank you Eddy for your...effort, but it seems you need to start brushing up on your history. And I'm sure that you'll have time to do that with the project that I am assigning."
Then the whole class moaned.
"Your project is to make a poster board on one of the many ancient tribes in the U.S. I also want you to tell what the tribe's feelings were towards the European explorers."
Man, that sounded like a lot of work. Well there goes my weekend.
"Oh, you may work with a partner." Said Mr. Connors.
Then I got excited. If I worked with someone, I could get the project done even faster. I rapidly looked around the room. People were already getting into partners. I got up and ran to the squirrel, he said no. I ran to the fox, he said no. I ran to the lizard, he said no too. After a while I just sat back down on my seat and gave up. It looks like I have to do all the work myself. Suddenly I heard this female voice to the right of me.
"Excuse me." She said. I turned to her direction. I was completely stunned to see that the voice came from a human girl, and not just any girl, the same girl that was staring at me yesterday.
"Um...hi" she said. "My name is Victoria."
I was still shocked that she would even talk to me. Victoria then took in a deep breath and said. "Do want to work together on the project?"
For a while, I couldn't get a word out. Was this really happening? I soon snapped out of it and said. "Why do you want to work with me?"
"I've heard that your really good at building things and you do pretty well in the class and...yea." Said Victoria.
"Is this some kind of prank?" I asked.
Victoria lit up and quickly said. "No. I just could really use your help."
I began to look around the room. There were surprised looks on everyone's face, even the teacher's. This next part confuses me the most. I don't know what force or feeling on earth made me do this, but I just did it without thought or restraint. I said yes. Then the bell rang. Victoria then quickly wrote down on a small piece of paper.
"Here's my address." She said. "We can start tomorrow."
She walked out the class. I had a very bad feeling about this. I've been to school long enough to know when someone is tricking me. But this girl seemed more different than any other human I met.
"Oh, wait." Said Mr. Connors. "The project will be due next week Thursday." The day before the talent show. That's just great. Now how am I going to focus on this song?
Soon it was time for gym. I loved my gym class, because my teacher and I were pretty cool. His name was Mr. Davis. He was a leopard. A pretty tall one too. I also liked the class because I get to see my friend Jack and my girl Sam, that always made gym fun. I got changed and went to the gym. Our gym was kind of old. Some of the nets on the hoops were ripped, the logo on the court was fading, and there was dust nearly everywhere. But, it was still alright. When I walked in the gym, everyone was just waiting for the teacher. Then I saw Jack with Sam in the corner of the gym. I walked over to them and said. "Hey guys. So what are we doing today?"
"I don't know," said Jack. "I think tennis."
Sam had a funny look on her face and said. "Tennis? Jack do you see a tennis court, or even a tennis net, anywhere?"
"I don 't know," Jack said. "I don't really follow what's going, especially not in gym."
"So what do follow?" I asked Jack.
Jack leaned on one leg, put his hands in his pockets and said, in a really relaxed way. "Nothing man. I just go with the flow."
"You're crazy." Said Sam.
"Yea," I said, agreeing with Sam. "But Jack is a cool guy."
Jack smiled and wagged his tail a little to show his satisfaction. Then we heard the scream of a whistle followed by a loud voice saying. "Alright guys and gals, line up on the black line!" I looked and saw Mr. David with a bag of basketballs. Now we know what we are playing. Everyone got on the line and listened to Mr. Davis.
"Alright everyone, today were gonna be playing basketball, if you didn't know. We will play simple 3 on 3 games using half of the courts." Said Mr. Davis. He then began to count all of us.
"Good." He said. "We have 12 people. Alright then everyone choose your team and come to me when you're ready to play."
I already knew who I wanted for my team. Jack and Sam. We came together and went to Davis. He just smiled and said. "Well, Eddy, Sam, and Jack. Why I'm I not surprised."
I laughed and said. "Come on Davis, you should know us by now. We play good together."
"Yea, of course you do." Said Davis as he took out a basketball. "You guys can start over there. Just don't beat them too bad."
I laughed. We walked over to the first team. Two girl cats and a boy lizard. I looked at Jack and I knew he was thinking the same thing I was thinking: this is going to be easy. We started with the ball. I bounced the ball between my legs a few times to trick the lizard. Then I passed it to Jack. He dribbled behind his back and passed to Sam. Sam took the shot and got it right through the hoop.
"Oooh, three points!" Screamed Sam.
We owned that team. Sam was the reason we won though because she had the best shot. The girl never missed.
After we won, we sat down to rest. I was breathing a little heavy, but I could still play. Sam was laughing at me.
"You tired already?" She said.
"Girl you know I ain't tired." I said. "Besides, you see the moves I do out there. They ain't easy."
Jack smiled and said. "Yea, whatever. You guys wouldn't beat anyone without me."
Sam and I both laughed. "Dude, you don't even have any points." I said. Jack's smile went away.
"Defense is the best offense my friend." He said.
"Hey, did you tell him about the party?" Asked Sam.
"What party?" I asked.
"Oh right." Said Jack. "This place is opening up down by that old pizza shop."
"Uncle Joe's?" I said.
"Yea, that's the place." Said Jack. "We're gonna go eat some pizza at Uncle Joe's and then go to this new club."
"The club?" I said in an uneasy way. "We aloud in the club?"
"Don't worry," said Jack. "I have my ways."
Jack was just about to tell what he was going to do until I heard the bounce of a basketball coming towards us. I looked to my left and I saw a basketball heading right for Sam's face. I quickly reached my hand over her head and hit the ball away from hitting her. After I hit the ball, I then began to see where it came from. It was from this loud group of human guys. To make things worse, it was those same guys that bullied that otter yesterday. They started walking over to us. Sam noticed that my ears went down and I clenched my fist.
"What's wrong?" She said.
"Who are these guys?" Asked Jack.
"Just let me handle it." I said.
One of the guys walked right up to me and said. "Well, nice to see you again wolf."
"Just watch where you playing alright." I said with anger.
"Whoa, I'm sensing some hostility. What do you think Mike?"
The guy behind him nodded and said. "Yea, Tyler. He seems a little tense."
"What do guys want?" Said Sam.
"Nothing." Said Tyler. "It's this guy who has the problem." Tyler then got in my face. "Besides, he ruined our fun before and I just want to return the favor." I growled at him. It startled him a little and he stepped back.
Then Tyler began to laugh. "Aw, you think your pretty tough huh?" He said. Tyler threw the basketball at me and I caught it in my hand.
"Wanna settle this with a game?" Tyler said with intimidation.
"Your on man." Said Jack. I didn't say anything. I just got up and went to the court.
The game started out pretty easy. Tyler's team only scored 2 points while we were scoring like crazy. I kept crossing Tyler up like crazy. He couldn't take the ball away from me. Then it was 14 to 5. My team was winning and I knew that a 3-point shot would end this game. I dribbled all around Tyler, making him look like a fool. Then I passed to Sam for the shot. Sam got in a good position and jumped in the air for the shot. But then I saw one of the guys on Tyler's team push her to the ground. Sam still made the shot, but I ran to the guy and pushed him out of the way.
"What the hell man?" I screamed. I picked Sam up. She seemed alright.
"Hey, it's a contact sport." Said Tyler. "It's not my fault your girl can't stand on her feet."
I got real mad and went to Tyler.
"Contact sport my ass!" I screamed. "Your guy pushed her!"
Tyler made an innocent face and said. "I didn't see a push."
I grabbed his shirt and almost punched him in the face, but Jack pulled me back.
"Hey, what's going?" Said Mr. Davis.
"I don't know, ask those guys?" Said Tyler.
I pulled Jack's arms off of me and went to sit down.
"Eddy, what's wrong?" Asked Mr. Davis.
"I don't want to play anymore." I said.
I went to sit down. I was trying to control my anger, but Tyler really gets on my nerves. I soon heard footsteps walking towards me.
"Hey." A voice said. It was Sam. I looked up at her and she said. "I told you I never miss." I laughed.
Going home that Friday night was really peaceful. I just threw my bag on the ground and didn't get out of bed until dinner. My friends said they would go to the club on Saturday night. So I had to find a way to get as much work done on that project tomorrow. I'm still pretty shocked that this girl Victoria wants to work with me. And telling my parents at dinner was pretty awkward. I decided to tell them at the dinner table. That's usually the best time to tell them anything. Although this time was a bit different. My mom just smiled and said. "Oh...well that's nice."
My dad wasn't that accepting though.
"What time?" He said.
"10." I said. "At her house."
"I'll drive you." My dad said with a worried look.
I really can't blame my family for being so paranoid. Thinking of Victoria reminded me that we never really had a good relationship with humans. Not at school, not at work, not even at our neighborhood.
I remember our old neighborhood in New York. It was pretty nice. The people there kept the place pretty clean. I also remember when I talked with a human for the first time. My mom thought we should go out more often, but my dad didn't like the idea. My mom took me out to the park anyway. I think I was about 8 years old and I was a quiet kid. It took a while but I started talking to this one kid by this tree. He just kept asking me crazy questions, like do you have flees, and stuff like that. He just asked question after question, like I was in some kind of interview. Soon he just stop asking questions and went to his mother. I remember getting a little worried at that moment. Then his mother talked with my mother and they just started yelling at each other. Then my mom took my hand and we went home. She didn't talk to me after that. So, once again, I can see why my parents were paranoid. They didn't want me to cause any trouble.
