Brotherly Love: Chapter 18
#3 of A New Venture
The doctor's office was too small, too closed in, and far too uncomfortable for the group that had been ushered into it the moment they'd gone past the receptionist. Roan normally took up quite a bit of space, and his partners were just as muscular. They'd taken the three seats set in front of the table leaving their three sons and one abashed looking husky to stand against the back wall. They loomed over the proceedings even as they tried to make themselves small. Kierlan was the worst of the lot, he had to duck his head slightly to be sure he wasn't touching the roof with his ear tips. It would have been fine if he could have sat down, but there were no chairs that would have held him and he didn't want to sit on the floor. Something that Richter felt not an ounce of shame over.
He sprawled out and watched Grant trying to catch Siber's eye as they waited for Dr. Lupe. The pair of them had come in together with a few words, but had been silenced by a look from Artemis who seemed to want them to try their best to be quiet. It was a slightly uncomfortable silence that was worse by the way Roan gave him a few long looks. The colt managed to drop his head down and rested it on his crossed arms. He was doing his best to not meet his father's looks. He wasn't sure what they meant. They weren't angry or disappointed, but they certainly weren't pleased. His tail twitched slightly as he let out a heavy sigh that was picked up by Kierlan.
The big tawny lion finally gave up on the idea of standing and dropped down next to his brother. The young stallion wiggled a little to make room, which made his back press right up against the book case. Not comfortable, but he felt more relaxed now that the muscular lion wasn't towering over all of them. Kierlan was still stiff and tense so he threw a dark arm over the golden shoulders just as his father glanced back again. He didn't take his arm away, but Roan didn't frown or narrow his eyes, he just glanced back and then went back to talking softly with Skarlath. Richter let out a breath of relief and hugged his brother firmly, a bit shocked at the way he had to spread his hand to wrap around the broad shoulder. Kierlan had always appeared so small.
"Ahh sorry to keep you folks waiting." Dr. Lupe came in with the door hitting against the wall sharply enough that nearly all of them jumped. "I was-"
Whatever the doctor had been doing was lost as he looked up and gaped at Richter and his brothers. The stallion flicked his ears back against his head and tucked his large soft nose downwards. The spill of his mane covered his eyes as he tried to hide behind it. It was an automatic guilty look as the big bull blinked his eyes a few time and lingered on Kierlan and then on either of his brothers and then fell right back down to him. A flush rose to his cheeks and started to spread right along the upper edges of his cheeks even as he tried to fight it off. Looking guilty wouldn't help anything.
"Well, I see that my warnings didn't quite serve as the deterrent I'd hoped it would." The doctor's voice was bland as he spoke and Richter flushed a bit harder.
"We tried to behave." Kierlan offered quietly and then gave a small tremulous smile towards their doctor. "I didn't even go near them."
"Then how did..." The doctor's eyes flicked around and it was Skarlath who answered to save Siber the embarrassment.
"He was staying up at Siber's parents' cabin at the time. I assume it was with the best of intentions." The red wolf wagged his tail as he looked back at his son. "Right now, we're trying to figure out exactly what is happening and what can be done to stop it. They can hardly go their entire lives with this... hrrrmm problem."
"Quite right.. quite right.." The big bull gave his head a shake back and forth so that his broad ears flapped back and forth. "Let's see now, we need to do something about this. I did run some preliminary tests to see what was causing it."
Their doctor moved behind the desk, grimacing a little bit as he was forced to inch past Roan's broad shoulders. The big stallion grinned and Richter blinked a little as he looked down at his own body and felt a sudden shock. He was big, bigger than his father was by far. He was heavier as well, but not in terms of fat, but in terms of muscle mass. He felt a moment of embarrassment and then straightened up and gave a squeeze as Kierlan drooped his head down guiltily. Of all of them, the big tawny lion was taking being found out the hardest. Granted, he hadn't had his fathers on the other side of the door while he was helplessly stuck to another male.
"Alright... now the test results I have back here.." The bull sat down in his chair and tapped a finger on the thick looking file. "There's a lot of information I got from it, but most of it probably wouldn't make much sense reading through it for you. So I'll summarize. Basically, the drugs that we used to ensure fertility was one that was passed along to them."
"You tested them for that already." Artemis stiffened and the white-gold male's tail suddenly snapped against the ground. "You checked repeatedly for that after how they grew while still in Skarlath. You assured me after the last time that they were fine."
"It was an experimental procedure. We had to tweak it for further use, you know that." Lupe tapped his thick nailed fingers against the folder. "I had assumed that once they pushed past puberty or at least were well into it, they would be settled. Problems that should arise shouldn't just crop up like this. And I'm not sure why it is now. Or why it's working on Siber! It didn't before, I don't know why it is now. Were you doing anything differently with Siber, Kierlan?"
His brother stiffened a little and Richter nosed him warmly against the edges of his shoulder as he watched the inner ears turning bright red. "It's okay, Kierlan.." He murmured softly.
"Not really, I mean, I dunno. The only thing that changed was uh.. what was happening after it.." He stuttered and Richter nosed him again.
"It's alright, son." Artemis leaned back, though he certainly didn't have to lean far, and patted his son's leg lightly. "We're just trying to figure out what's wrong that's all."
"Okay, Dad." Kierlan mumbled and flipped his ears back.
"Sir, why are we? I mean, is it just gonna go away? Will this always happen? How much will we grow, is it the same in inches each time or is relative to how big we are." Richter took the doctor's attention away from his brother and focused it towards him.
"That's what we need to figure out. I can base some of it on your last time here and what your height was at the time." The doctor flipped the chart open and glanced down at it, "That was ten months ago, and that's not... well, it's certainly not a basis. Young men grow quickly, you realize, and I'm not sure how much of your growth is going to pertain to what you've been doing and what would be a normal growth spurt."
"That's not very helpful." Richter muttered and flipped his ears back. "I mean, what are we gonna do? You tested us and that doesn't mean anything except something is wrong. And what's Siber got to do with it."
"Richter, hush." Roan glanced back at him and frowned before looking back. "The boy has a few good points, what are we supposed to do."
"Right now, I'm going to try and find out answers to those questions. Part of me wants to send you back home, but I'm afraid that's not possible right now." The doctor leaned forward. "The children should stay here while I gauge the effects and if they're harmful. We have a sleep clinic that we don't have in use right now and they can stay there. I'm sure some comforts from home will help, but we need to know what's happening and right now I want them to be under my eye or at least under video surveillance in case there's something they haven't told-"
"We're not lying!" Richter stiffened and Grant glanced at him before the white gold lion spoke up.
"Sir, we're telling you everything. Even embarrassing parts." His calmer brother spoke softly and his ears flickered upwards. "I don't know what you'd learn there."
"I'd know when the growth takes effect, how it happens. I can measure the growth and possibly find out what's triggering it. If it's the sexual act, the orgasm or simply the stimulation to the mind." Dr Lupe didn't look ruffled.
"I don't want to stay here." Kierlan's shoulders were a bit tense. "I'd rather go home."
"It's alright, Kierlan," Skarlath glanced back and then sighed. "I don't like it, but.. I think it might be the best option. I want to know how it'll affect them . It won't be that terribly long and I'm sure that we can bring them some comforts from home. In fact we could stay with-"
"No!" Dr. Lupe's ears fell back and he shook his blunt muzzle back and forth. "I'm sorry, but the boys will often be asked sensitive questions and I'd like them to behave naturally. Now that you know, well.." The big bull leaned backwards and gestured slightly. "It's not that they don't love you, but a young man is hardly going to behave close to naturally if he's under his parents' eyes. The sleep clinic can be quartered off and they'll have it to themselves, a sort of small apartment. You may visit whenever you wish, Siber can as well when it comes down to it, but I'd prefer that they view it as their own temporary home."
"But.." The red wolf's ears tipped back and he looked unhappy. Artemis used a large white gold paw to pat his leg lightly.
"Come now, Siber, you would be just as embarrassed if you were in their position and your father was hanging around. It'll do the boys some good to get away, I think. And I'd feel more comfortable following the doctor's orders instead of ignoring them."
Richter blew out a breath of relief and gave Kierlan a slight smile. He loved his parents, but now that they knew and had confronted them, it was embarrassing. He didn't want to be forced to answer uncomfortable questions, or worse, do things where they might see. It would be bad enough knowing that their doctor was going to be keeping an eye on things and they'd be struggling act naturally. Kierlan gave him a weak grin and seemed to agree with them. The young lions ears came up and a hopeful look came into his eyes.
"I can get some of my paints from home maybe.." He offered quietly. Grant glanced over at them with an almost angry expression, but he swallowed it back.
"Well then, let's get started then. We can have them stay tonight. Siber, I'd appreciate a talk with your parents as well. I'm not sure where you fit in in all of this, but they might be able to offer me a little more insight." The big bull stood up and the husky looked as if he'd swallowed a bug. Well, at least they wouldn't be the only ones having their parents knowing what was going on.

Grant set his bag on the small bed that he'd pushed up against the wall and tried not to give into the urge to punch the pillow. His tail lashed back and forth wildly behind him while he stared down at the pale blue covers that were barely thick enough to keep off a chill. The entire room smelled vaguely like the doctor's office and not at all like home. He'd had to rein in the desire to tell the doctor that he had no intention of staying here earlier, but it had been taken out of his hands. The other two looked perfectly agreeable to it. Even if Kierlan had been looking nervously about at the idea of their parents coming as well, he hadn't said anything about not coming. That had left him keeping his muzzle shut.
It wasn't as if he wasn't curious about what was going on with his own body, but he didn't want to stand here and end up being made some sort of experiment. He'd been about to say as much before they'd taken it out of his hands. Artemis had stayed with Dr. Lupe to outline a few tentative plans and Skarlath and Roan had shooed them all out. Roan had gone to take Siber home and talk with his boyfriends parents, and who knew how that would go, while they had gone home with Skarlath. The wolf had been a bit more nervous then normal, covering it up with talk, but still hadn't given Grant any sort of opening to voice his own reservations.
Instead they'd been packed up as carefully as he could have wished. Richter had been positively cheerful about it. He had been trying to rally Kierlan into talking about living in their own space for a while and no parents. The normal brightness had taken over his earlier embarrassment. And before they could blink, they'd been taken back to the hospital and the sleeping clinic. They had enough bags to last them for at least a week, plus some homework that had been assigned to them by 'understanding' teachers. The fact they'd been pulled out of school was another thing that set him bristling as he tried to find a calm place to center himself. With a sigh he flopped down on the bed and stretched out.
"Grant! Didja see what the doc is doing to the observation room? He's got a few nurses moving in stuff to making a living room. We have a full sized fridge too." Richter's nose pushed into the room just before the rest of him followed. "I just got done helping haul the couch in. And I did it all by myself. Didn't even have to get help."
Grant opened an eye to see the colt's neck arched proudly and his nostrils flared. His ears were up and even his tail was flagged with good humor as he barged in without even knocking. His big hooves clopped heavily on the linoleum floors. The bright eyes flicked around the room and peered at the sparse furnishings with interest before claiming one secure chair to flop his bulk down in. Roan would have made a tight fit on the thing, Richter had to damn near force himself down onto it. It looked as if he were sitting on a piece of furniture meant for a kid.
"Great, just great. We can sit in a freaking windowed room and eat dinner." He growled and kept his ears back. The urge to be polite was rapidly falling away when faced with the bouncing young stallion.
"What's wrong with you?" Richter's ears fell back. "It's not that bad, I mean yeah there's windows and such, but the doc said he was closing up this part of the clinic so we can have to ourselves." He gestured to the mirror that lined one part of the room, a two way mirror.
"Oh no, they won't be sitting there, but have you even looked at the cameras they got around here." He jabbed a finger at the dark half globe on the ceiling.

Richter blinked at the snapping response he got out of his brother and shifted on the too small chair. He heard the metal groaning in protest as he dropped his ears backwards. Grant had been pretty quiet when they'd moved in here. Kierlan had been quiet too, but he was always that way. He mostly seemed to be looking around the place and trying to figure out how it was going to work. He was big enough that the doctor had had to bring in a special bed for him since the current one was far too small. The colt had kept his complaints quiet, he hadn't wanted to say anything when he'd tried out his own small bed. After all, he could deal and he wasn't sure that the doctor would have another. Besides, since they were all here relatively unsupervised by their parents he could always bunk with his brother.
"So? There's cameras, doc said he wanted to make sure we were okay." He answered in bafflement. Grant only bristled a bit more and punched the pillow on his bead.
"They're gonna tape us. That's what they're gonna do. They're going to have us here and Lupe is going to watch us all the time. And.. and.. tape it! There will be tapes of us!" Grant grimaced a bit. "Can you imagine having tapes like that out there?"
"Of what? Geez, calm the hell down." Richter shifted back in the chair to draw away from his angry brother. "What do you want? To go home and not figure this out?"
"I want to not have us taped like this! Why are we growing? You know why! Cause we're fooling around with each other. They're gonna tape us DOING that." The lion's tail lashed and he gave his maned head a rough shake back and forth. "That's not fair. I mean, what if it got out? Can you imagine what that would look like?"
"Oh... OH!" Richter frowned slightly. "Dr. Lupe's always been good to us, he wouldn't do something like that."
"No, but how many other folks does he have working here? It won't be just him. I don't want to be looked at like that. And think of poor Kierlan, he's already nervous about all this stuff. Hell, he's only just gotten okay with us and now there's gonna be this?" Grant started to pace and glared up at the camera. "I think it's outrageous, I can't believe our parents said this was okay."
"Come on, Grant. Don't be so worked up...." Richter frowned to himself. "Kierlan didn't seem to object. He's already setting up his stuff and doesn't seem unhappy."
"Probably because he doesn't know he's gonna be watched and all that!" Grant snapped. "Are you really okay with that? People watching you do stuff?"
Richter blinked his eyes a few time and frowned to himself again. He looked at the black globe of the camera and tried to recall if they were other places as well. He hadn't really been paying attention to the ceiling, he'd mostly been working on getting things set up and making sure that he wasn't making too much work for the nurses. If they were in here, they'd be in his room too. He didn't really care that much, but what Grant was saying about being watched... The big colt gave his head a short shake back and forth and lifted his head a little bit.
"Why don't you just ask him if you're so upset? I don't think he'd do something unnecessary." The stallion replied slowly, "He's a good doctor and our parents trust him. We wouldn't even be here without him."
"Fine, maybe I will!" Grant snapped back and gave his head a short sharp nod. "Then maybe I won't have to stay here. You can be on tape if you want, but I'm not gonna do it."
~ ~ * ~ ~
Grant left his brother still looking puzzled in his room. He stormed out with his tail lashing hard enough that he could feel the tufted tip hitting the door way. It wasn't that he was ashamed of what he was doing, not really, but he wasn't going to make a spectacle of himself just because there were questions about what was going on. There had to be other ways to get the information. It wasn't like this was their only option, just the best one. And there had to be other ways. The fact that Richter wasn't at all bothered only made him more upset. The colt should have been bothered too! He should have wanted to try and at least keep some parts of his life private and quiet.
The nurses were working in the viewing room and trying to make it look like a living room instead of a place that people watched the rooms. The two way mirrors were covered with blankets that were almost made to look like curtains. The fridge had been put against a wall and there was the couch Richter had brought up. Dr. Lupe wasn't to be found there, instead they pointed him down to the hall where he was supposedly doing his best to put together a plan for the next few days. After poking his head in a few empty rooms he found the old bull in a room that was filled with various monitors that were set up around the desk that showed the various rooms. Just like he'd known there would be.
"Grant, are you done setting up your room?" The graying bull lifted his short muzzle with a faint smile. "I'm sorry they're not very roomy, but they weren't made to be lived in."
"I did, but I wanted to talk to you." The white-gold lion peered towards black and white screens. "About all this.." He gestured at the monitors.
"Ahh, yes well..." The doctor turned his chair around. "Right now we're not sure what is making you change, of course. So.."
"I don't want to be on camera!" Grant snapped out and his tail hit the ground with a sharp crack. "I want to get a real job one day and what if pictures of us all... doing stuff got out there? I'd never get a good position! I'd end up the laughing stock."
"Now, Grant, I'm not sure what you've been told-" The old bull frowned slightly and Grant cut him off before he could start trying to argue on why it was necessary.
"I know there are cameras in my room and I know you said that we'd have to be watched and observed to figure out what was going on and why. I don't want that taped! I sure as hell don't want people in there wa-watching!" He tripped over the word before he drew in a breath to steady him and then plowed ahead. "So you can either take out the cameras or I can go home, but I'm not going to be made a mockery of."
"No one is mocking you, son." The big bull blew out a sigh that made his padded nose flare a little bit. "I sympathize with you. You're a young man and these circumstances are out of your control. Trust me, the last thing I want to do is torment any of you by having people watch or taping you."
"That's what you say, I know it's probably some sort of scientific first or whatever and-" He snapped back and the bull let out a snort.
"Grant, I've been with you since you were born. Do you think I would do that to you?" The doctor stood up and gave his head a shake. "First what we'll do is try to NOT interfere or embarrass you. You may be asked to enjoy yourselves, but it will be done privately. The only difference is we'll measure you before and after-"
"Which I could do myself at home!" He pounced on the words victoriously.
"Which we can do here with more accuracy and I trust the results more. No," Lupe held up a hand, "I don't think you'd lie to me, but it would be easy to look at a measurement and read it slightly off. Not realize that it's an eighth of an inch not a fourth. Accuracy is everything here."
"So, teach us how to read it!" Grant kept his ears back and his pose defiant.
"And yes, we have equipment here we will be using, one of them a monitor on your heart, brain waves, etc that I want to get a read on. And yes, that will be utilized while you are in the midst of sexual acts, but I hope that I won't be viewing anything you do. It can be done privately and if you wish I will let you check this room every time." The bull gestured. "You can make sure there's no tapes in there yourself. The last thing I want to do is turn them on. If I have to, you'll know about it."
"But you'll still.. I mean.." Grant growled softly to himself, "You want to hook us up to wires and machines?!"
"Yes, that's what it means. The first time I'm hoping to do it tonight. I want to see if there's any change from what's considered normal before you start to grow." Dr. Lupe sighed and looked tired. "It won't require anything really invasive."
"I don't want to do it." He flattened his ears. "It's just... I don't like the idea of people knowing.. I mean.." He trailed off unable to really come up with a protest that would stick.
"I don't mind.." A soft voice startled him and he jerked as his now larger brother poked his head into the room. He had to duck to keep from hitting his door on the top of the door. "If it'll help I mean."
"Kierlan, you didn't even-" Grant stopped and frowned as the tawny lion blinked at him a few times and tilted his head.
"I'd kinda like to know why I'm wearing Roan's clothes, Grant. If that'll help, what's the harm. I'm sure that Richter won't mind helping me with it." Kierlan flushed a little bit and the edges of his ears went dark red. "I mean, it'd be after other folks went home alright."
"Yes, it would." The doctor nodded and then looked back at Grant. "Son, if you have a problem, I understand. I won't force you, no one will, but we want to make sure that you're not taking any harm. Why don't you sleep on it, Kierlan and Richter can help tonight."
"HELP WITH WHAT?" Richter's voice echoed down the hall before they heard the clop of hooves. "I'm not moving anymore furniture damnit!"
Grant just sighed. A night to think on it. He wasn't going to change his mind!
