PART 14: A Little Time Together
Words. Single letters brought together. They all flew around in his head, trying to combine themselves into something more. A screen of white with black stared back at him, the cursor slowly blinking, waiting for more letters to be brought together.
His hands hovered over the keys, barely moving. He started typing and soon stopped, reading what he wrote over and over again. Eyes narrowed, he growled and covered them with his hands before screaming in frustration.
"No! This doesn't fucking work!!!" Drake tried his best to calm himself down, but it was unsuccessful. As his chest started to rise and fall quickly, the azure scaled dragon removed his limbs from his head, allowing them to fall limply to the side. Feeling only slightly calmer, Drake looked back at the screen and held down the backspace key.
"I cant do that. That just fucks up with I wrote before. Why is this so damn fucking hard?!" With a fist clenched, Drake managed to keep himself from going into another small burst of rage and frustration. Quickly though, he pushed himself up straight and looked at the screen with his hands hovering over the keyboard once again. He started forming words in his head and how his book would progress, but that was followed by a series of questions and doubts.
Not wanting to deal with it anymore, Drake saved the document once to his main computers hard drive and a copy to a 2GB memory stick before shutting the machine down.
"Take a break. . .take a break, relax and go back to it later, that always helps. . .yeah. . .now what the fuck do I do?" Drake asked himself. Sighing, he just sat on the bed and looked at the alarm clock that was next to his bed. He snorted a little, realising it was only just after quarter past two in the afternoon, which had meant the dragon had only been working on his book for a little more than an hour.
Trying to distract himself, he scanned around his room for anything that could possibly be remotely interesting. Nothing grabbed his attention and forcibly, he pushed himself off the bed and walked towards the window. Drake sighed, leaning on the windowsill. Today was a good day, the sun was shining, clouds hung lazily in the sky and a faint breeze was blowing.
A great day and I'm bored out of my skull. . Hmm? Drake's thoughts were interrupted as spotted Jamie and Max walking with Rei, talking and laughing away. He couldn't make out what they were saying but he could only smile at them.
His mind called back the morning Jamie and Max returned from the sleepover at Rei's. The dragon himself had asked how it had went and only got sly grins in return and a short description of what they did. Movies and games. Drake, of course, didn't buy it, not one little bit. He would have asked them if they could keep their pants on for longer than five minutes but he held it back, knowing he and Troy were just as horny at that age.
Troy. . . Drake pushed himself away from the window and sighed, wondering what his panther was up to. The two of them hadn't talked at all today, but such a thing was not unusual. However, the two of them made it a habit and always liked to know they were around. Moving towards the bed, Drake picked up his cell and smiled when an image of himself and Troy appeared on the screen.
"Maybe I'll call him, he might want to go somewhere." Just as he was about to pull up Troy's name, his phone burst into life, playing his ringtone. His reaction, a quick, but held back scream and nearly jumping out of his scales. The dragon growled and looked at the caller ID. "I guess you were thinking of me too." Answering the call, Drake smiled. "Hey there."
"Hi. I'm not bothering you am I?"
Drake tilted his head slightly to the left and smiled deeply, wondering if he should have told the feline that he nearly scared the life out of him. "No, of course not love."
"That's good. I was wondering if you want to come over. Dad's working and mom finally left me alone."
"She driving you nuts?"
"It's the cast, as long as I have it on she's trying to do everything for me and its getting to the point I just wanna. . ."
Drake heard Troy sighing deeply. "She just cares about you. And besides, soon it'll be off. Has your dad let you back into the training room?"
"Heck no! Apparently, I'll hurt myself and break my arm all over again. But, I've been jogging and lifting tins of food with my only good arm."
Drake chuckled. "Tins of food? Like a can a beans?"
"Its better than nothing. Although, weights are better." The two of them laughed and Troy broke the momentary silence after the laughter faded. "So, you want to come over? We can always go out somewhere if you prefer."
"Sure, I'm at a loose end. I'll be over in about fifteen minutes?"
Even if he couldn't see it, Drake could just imagine seeing the panther smile. "Great, say hi to the hornballs for me will you?"
"I will. See you soon."
After hanging up, Drake pocketed the phone and grabbed his trainers before making his way downstairs. Walking straight into the living room, he found his mother reading a magazine. "Well, you calmed down yet? You almost shook the roof off the house with that scream." Lily smiled and held in her laugh.
"Why don't you try writing a book mother."
Putting the magazine down, Lily looked directly at her son. "Don't call me that, you know I hate it."
"Yes mother." Drake grinned.
Lily would have said his name again, but she instead picked up the magazine and noticed that her son was carrying his trainers and starting to put them on. "Where are you off to?"
"Going to see Troy."
"Ah. Walking?"
"Well.. .yeah, how else am I going to get there?"
Lily shrugged. "Usually you fly if you get the chance."
The blue dragon sighed as his mom brought the subject up again. "Mom, I can't right now."
"Drake, you're back to your normal weight which I'm really happy about, but surely you've got enough strength in your wings."
He sighed. During the time he stopped eating, Drake had not only lost weight, he lost a decent amount of muscle and a lot of strength within in his wings. He had planned to start flying again but he kept putting it off, which only resulted in his family repeatedly asking him when he would actually go outside and try to fly again. "And I'd rather not just suddenly plummet from the sky. Besides, you never fly and dad rarely does these days."
"Because I'm older and I didn't want to, you're father only does so if he absolutely needs to. You always made a point of it when you were younger. Why not go see your old instructor? What was his name. . .Adam Risley was it?"
Drake began tying the laces on his trainers. He remembered clearly who Risley was, a tall Jackdaw that was well into his forties or early fifties, he couldn't be sure, but his job was to teach any winged avian or reptile how to fly.
"I'm not thirteen mom."
Thirteen was the age when kids could apply for lessons. They would stay behind after school and get taught for more than an hour on how to fly, maintaining speed and altitude without going into any restricted airspace. That was never really a problem since those that could fly tended to stay well below the limits of certain buildings. Drake remembered sitting in the classes and flying around above the sports field. Even the day when he got a license that permitted him to fly was still fresh in his mind. In a way, it was similar to a diver's license but still had restrictions. Those carrying a license had to renew them every five years and prove they were still fit enough to fly around without landing themselves into either a jail cell or into the ground.
"I know you're not thirteen. But its just a suggestion."
"I know, but I'll have to get it renewed in February next year. That and take both a theory exam and a flying exam. Again."
"Still, why don't you go see him. Doesn't he still teach at Jamie's school?"
The blue dragon shrugged. "I guess. Who knows, maybe I will, but I'll practice myself later." Getting up off the couch, Drake informed his mom that he was leaving and wasn't likely to return until well into the evening. As the door closed behind him, he saw the three younger teenagers standing a few feet away from him, all giving suggestions about what they could do today.
"We cant swim, Mark said he was cleaning the pool and he'll probably just want to be left alone for a while." Rei informed them.
"We could always go to the mall?" Jamie suggested.
"We'd need a ride though." Max pointed out.
"Hey you three." Drake said as he walked past them.
"Hey, where are you going?" Max asked him.
"Going to see Troy for a while. I'll see you guys later."
Receiving a couple of goodbyes from them, Drake walked at a steady pace down the pavement, crossing the roads only when he needed to. He was starting lose himself in his thoughts, wondering what he would be doing with Troy. Maybe they would end up going somewhere or perhaps they might just even cuddle together on the couch and watch a movie or something. Seeing the familiar house coming into view, Drake sped up his pace and rang the doorbell. When it opened, he saw that jet black muzzle and those gorgeous eyes looking back at him. Troy was wearing a pair of old cargo pants that were loose and becoming very thin, allowing Drake to see a small pattern on the boxers underneath while he wore a simple blue shirt that was unbuttoned at the top. Most likely it was far easier to put on and pull off than a regular shirt Drake figured. Seeing the smile on Troy's face was enough to make him wrap his arms around Troy's waist and nuzzle his chest through the fabric. He could smell Troy's deodorant mixing with his natural scent, making him wonder if he was just out of the shower not long ago and a small twinge of regret nipped at him. A few hours earlier maybe? I could have had a much better morning.
"Do you know how much I love you?"
"You're sweet." Troy said and pulled the dragon gently inside and shut the door, placing a gentle kiss on the dragons lips. "And I like that."
Troy gestured Drake to follow him through the house and Troy moved into the living room, switching the TV off. "Been alright this morning Troy?" Drake asked as Troy moved back towards him.
"Yeah, I pretty much told you everything over the phone. Mom driving me nuts and dad not letting me work out. Went for a shower earlier, takes me bloody ages cause I have to keep this damn thing dry. Pain in the ass really. Only other thing I've been doing is watching the TV." Troy sighed as he led the dragon upstairs towards his room. "What about you? Please say your day has been better than mine."
Drake shrugged. "Mom is still nagging me about starting flying again. She's trying to convince me to go see my old instructor Risley." He pondered on the thought of maybe telling his boyfriend about the book he was trying to write earlier, but then that would lead to questions which Drake would have rather avoided until it was done. Fortunately, Drake thought, Troy didn't ask.
"Risley?" Troy racked his memory for the person and even after he remembered who it was, he gave a puzzled looked. "Your mom wants you to see that old Jackdaw? The one that taught you in middle school? Wasn't he a miserable old bastard?"
"Yeah, that's the one. And he wasn't that bad, just an ass on a bad day." The two of them walked side by side and stepped passed the doorway of the panther's bedroom. "I don't see the point. I can fly and its not like I've forgotten how to. . .its just. . .my wings, if they're strong enough."
"You sure about that?" Troy sat his dragon down on the bed. Even though he was terrified of heights, he never really minded watching his boyfriend fly around above him, despite the lingering fear that Drake would stall in mid-air and crash into the hard ground. However he did his best to keep it in check. "Open your wings."
Drake had a hunch as to where this was going, but rather than object, he opened them out and allowed Troy to gently caress the wing membrane with his furred paw. It tickled slightly causing a little smile to appear across his face and even a little shiver as that paw ran over the bone and membrane.
"They feel good." Troy moved his paw upwards towards the scales. "Doesn't seem to be any damage to them."
"Troy, you don't really know about this sorta stuff. You're not a doctor."
"Maybe not. But, I can try."
"Oh fuck, did my sister get you?"
Troy titled his head and grinned. "No she didn't. And meaning no offence, the thought kinda. . .disturbs me? No. . .repulses me?"
Drake chuckled and shook his head. "I know she didn't and none taken hon. I'm just joking with you." Smiling, Drake folded his wings and nuzzled his boyfriend. "My turn. How's the arm?"
A small sigh escaped from the cats jet black muzzle. "Put it this way, I'm really close to tearing this damn cast off."
Stifling a chuckle, Drake started to close his eyes and lean into the warmth that Troy had. "You better not. It'll be off soon."
Troy rolled his eyes. "Now you're beginning to sound like my mom."
"Please don't say that again."
The feline chuckled softly. "Sorry but you said the same words as her. Oh, I forgot to tell you, I met the guy who phoned me the ambulance the other day. Nice guy."
"What's he like?"
Troy shrugged at the question. "Usual kind of guy. He's a little like dad but not as fitness crazy. The thing is though, when I met him, I had no clue who he was. So, we went out for dinner with his family as a way of thanks. Dunno if they'll stay in touch but-"
Drake smiled. "Well, it was wonderful of him to keep an eye on you." The dragon planted a kiss on Troy's cheek, resulting in a small purr. "Oh, how's the whole situation with the car going?"
With that question, the feline edged ever so slightly away from Drake. Despite trying to be discrete as possible, Drake noticed it but rather than pester him about it, he stayed silent until Troy spoke. Pulling his gaze up from the carpet, Troy shrugged. "Dad's taking care of most of it, he was on the insurance as well and I. . .Drake, I don't remember a thing about what happened in the car and, you see. . .the other day, Dad found a decent enough car for me and. . ." Troy gulped and took a deep breath. ". . .I just didn't want to be near it at all."
"I thought you'd want to get a car as soon as possible. You jumped at the chance to get your learner's permit and when you passed you were over the moon."
Rubbing his eyes, Troy pursed his lips and thought about his words carefully before letting them out of his mouth. "Yeah that was then and this is now. I just never gave it a thought that I could have. . ." He didn't want to say it and Drake didn't want to hear it either. "If I ever have to go Drake, I'd rather it not be like that."
"Troy can we drop this?" Drake forced a chuckle, although he wasn't exactly sure why he did. Perhaps just to brighten up the mood that slowly descending onto them. It wasn't enough though and Drake gulped as those lonely nights came back to him. "Its something I'd really rather not think about."
"I know and I'm sorry. Its just. . .I'm scared Drake. I don't want that to happen again."
Leaning in close, Drake rested his head on the feline's shoulder. "I don't want it to happen either. I just want to keep you here with me." Troy smiled at him and wrapped his arm around the dragon. "Hey come on, how about we just cuddle for a bit?"
"In bed? You sure, what about your arm?"
"I might ask you to cut off this cast." The two of them smiled at each other and stood up, Drake undressing himself down to a pair of briefs and assisting Troy in removing his clothes before the two of them slipped into the panthers bed, embracing and sharing the warmth they both had.
"I must sound stupid right?"
"How?"
Troy smiled softly. "A big, tough, muscled panther scared of getting in a car. And heights as well. Bet a lot of people think I'm not scared of anything."
Stretching and placing his arms around the felines neck, Drake licked his cheek. "Everyone is scared of something kitten."
"What are you scared of then?"
He replied with his answer in an instant without even needing to think. "Losing you."
"Again, you're sweet. But I meant other things. I'm terrified of losing you as well."
"Spiders. I really just hate them."
Troy giggled and smiled, cuddling Drake closer. "They're not bad, you just deal with them."
Shaking his head, the dragon grimaced and shivered. "Whatever, the thought alone makes my scales crawl."
As the two of them lay in the bed, Troy let his good hand roam the dragons body stopping on the underwear. Drake smiled and guessed where this would most likely end up going. "You know Drake. . .we haven't don't anything much over the past few days. . .and. . .we are alone."
Already the dragon was feeling his growing erection pressing against his briefs and it was very tempting. True they were alone, but for how long? Not that it would exactly matter as they had been disturbed before but that's not what he was concerned about. Glancing at the cast, Drake opened his maw to start speaking but instead he got his maw clamped shut by a black furred paw.
"Drake, don't mention the cast."
Pulling the hand away, Drake sat up. "Thankfully I didn't bite my tongue. And I just want to be careful, is that so bad?"
Troy sighed again. "I know, but I don't want it to prevent us from having sex. Its not a big deal."
Standing up, Drake moved over the window and pulled the cords letting the blinds down and then shutting the door. "I know its not a big deal. I just don't want it to hurt you. It still has to heal."
"I'm aware of that Drake. I'm not stupid and neither are you. I love you and I trust you."
With a smile on his face, Drake slipped off his briefs and moved back towards the bed, hearing soft purrs as he moved closer. Stopping at the bedside, a pair of boxers slipped out from under the covers and onto the floor leaving a feline lying in bed with a large grin on his face. Grinning himself, Drake leaned in and kissed the feline, gently sliding back into bed and embracing Troy in his arms.
*****************************************************
Hello again, how long has it been? On second thought, don't answer that. If you're going to ask "Where's the yiff?" then the answer is simply this, I felt like this was a good enough point to stop and have just some romance instead. But it felt good to get this chapter out, despite how short it is. Anyway, have fun.
