#6 of Kiss of Destiny

It was early in the morning on the second day when Mittens/Jodie woke up. She stretched, smiling at her recollections of last night. In a remarkable show of compassion, Bolt had given up his food and bed for her. She would have preferred him to share them, but she was touched just the same. She sat up and shook herself. The movement was a little different from it had been when she was a cat, but it achieved the same purpose. Mittens put her newly improved nose to work and set out on Bolt's scent trail.

She found him upstairs, asleep in Penny's bed. He looked so peaceful, curled up in a little ball with his muzzle resting on his tail and snoring softly, that she didn't have the heart to disturb him. She crept silently out of the room and back downstairs, where she ran into Rhino. The fat little hamster was rolling around in his ball, as was his custom. He looked up with a smile that quickly turned into a frown. "You look familiar..." he said. In deference to the fact that she was now a dog, Mittens cocked her head and wagged her tail at him. Rhino continued to look at her with a hungry expression of curiosity on his face. He scrutinized her face, looking for what, she did not know. "What did you say your name was?" he asked. She gave him a sharp look, then proceeded to scratch out her name with a paw. "Jodie? Why didn't you just say it?" In response to that query, Mittens held a paw to her throat, then shook her head. "Oh... I'm sorry..." Rhino looked shocked. She smiled at him, sensing his embarrassment. She shrugged, dismissing it. A series of footsteps across the ceiling signaled that someone was awake. Mittens looked towards the stairs and was overjoyed when she saw that it was Bolt. In turn, he looked happy to see her. "Morning, Jodie!" he said. She wagged her tail at him to return the sentiment.

Bolt quickly devoured his breakfast and did his daily routine of stretching. A series of pops ripped through his spine and he grinned. "Ready to go look for Mittens?" he asked. She nodded, seeing no other way out of it. "Rhino, stay here incase she comes back."

Together, the two of them went out through the dog door and headed for town.

Kiss of Destiny: Chapter 6

Later that evening, after they had returned from the rather fruitless search for Mittens' other body, Bolt and Mittens were curled up in front of the fireplace. There was no fire in the grate, but the tile radiated the heat gathered during the day....

A few hours later, Mittens, in her new body, found herself at her home. She was listening to Penny explain to her mother that she didn't have a clue where Mittens was. Thus far, no one had commented on her appearance, though she knew that that could...

A slight nudge was enough to wake her. She could hear light breathing, and the sound of a paw shifting slightly on dirt. She moved her paw around and felt the surface that she was laying on. Dirt, with some small bits of rock mixed in. She opened her...
