Prequel (No Name Yet)
#23 of Discontinued
A new story. I have posted a journal about something of a galactic war and all that. This is it, however I have decided to go in a different direction.
The darkness was illuminated by the fires of destruction; the scars of battle that marked the earth would never heal as the battle raged on as the final stand of a proud people.
Rifle muzzles illuminated the rubble around as the sound of the gun fire echoed out, drowned out only by the screams of the shadowed creatures that charged fearlessly into the oncoming blaze of gun fire. Armored warriors steadily backed away as the shadowed enemies continuously forced them back into the remains of one of the last standing buildings, the last place that they could hide.
"I am a soldier..."
The last stronghold was nothing more than a small building that only stood two floors in height, the smooth sides and cylinder design served well in all side defenses but trapt the survivors inside as there was nowhere to run when surrounded. The dark armored warriors quickly slammed the large metal door closed, slamming heavy spikes into the ground so the doors could no longer be forced open from the outside. The darkness within the building was cut away by small fires and blue lights that were scattered about marking supplies and wounded.
As two warriors pounded the large spikes into the ground the seven others quickly spread out, there was no resting, no time taken to take a breath. A warrior took stand before the others, pointing to supplies and wounded, the others quickly scrambled around to collect supplies and arm the wounded that were capable of holding weapons.
"Not by choice, but necessity..."
The leading warrior stared silently through the dark eye shield of the mask upon their face, the dark helmet hiding the features of their face, a black and grey camouflage painted upon the battle scarred armor helping to hide the warrior in the darkness. The weapon within the leaders hand was raised before their chest, a push of a slide upon the side caused a white glowing light to shine from the inside of the weapon. The light was cut off as the slide was released, the other warriors quickly gathering around the leader who rose their right arm up, resting the top of the rifle upon their shoulder as their head scanned from left to right, hidden eyes gazing over the warriors that awaited orders.
As the remaining warriors gathered up close the leader merely nodded in approval as the warriors checked weapons and ammo, each giving the other a final goodbye with fists hitting shoulders or helmets being bumped together showing the bonds that the warriors held with one another, the leader was even approached by a head smaller warrior. The leader's left gloved hand was placed on the back of the head of the smaller warrior, a bend down to bump their helmet against the smaller warriors before the smaller warrior pulled back to give a small bump of the leaders chest with a balled fist.
"I fight, even though there is no escape... I will die here..."
The warriors then turned all attention to the sealed door, the shadows had been beating against the outside of the door since it was slammed closed, and the sound was that of the enemy at the gates. The warriors all understood that there would be no way out. Not one would survive this final battle, but all held firm as the doors echoed out in protest as they attempted to keep the shadows out. The warriors slowly spread out, weapons lifted to shoulders while the leader backed away, the surrounding was taken in even though there was no escape it would be good to know so this final fight would be dragged out.
With a quick step the leader spun on their heels as the doors were finally smashed open, the shadows standing within the door way, heavy dust being flung into the building as the warriors stared at the shadows in silence, not giving a single movement as the dark figures quickly poured in. The dark figures were thin, large shard like objects protruding from them, the darkness hiding them like a shroud as they quickly wandered into the building.
"I fight with nothing but hate and hope..."
The warriors remained as statues, the shadows seeming to be unable to find them as they passed the warriors, the appearance of heads were twisted back and forth as if they were unable to see the warriors that they wandered past over and over again. One of the shadows approached the leader slowly, crawling upon the ground before reaching the leader and slowly raising to its 'feet' to reach eye level with the leader. The sound of air being pulled in marked the shadow smelling the air perhaps, yet the leader gave no more time as their helmet was swung forward, smashing the head-plate against the shadows 'head' causing it to reel back with a loud shriek that was like nails on a chalkboard.
The other shadows quickly snapped all the attention onto the leader who had already shouldered their weapon, the other warriors breaking that frozen stance to quickly open fire on the shadows. The muzzle flare within this building was much brighter, as it flickering lights were now dancing to the images of the shadows being thrown about. Each round from the rifle of one of the warriors glowed brightly as it ripped through the dark figures before them, flashes of twisted black and red flesh could be seen from the flashes of light, and a dark black metal twisted in dim purple glowing light was forced through the flesh and around the metal. The shadow shrieked out over and over as the glowing rounds ripped through them, the ones that were capable quickly dashed around the warriors by any means, several even jumping onto the walls and ceiling.
"The enemies are demons from the deepest parts of the darkness..."
The shadows moved in twisted patters, arms and legs being thrown about in random directions as they quickly scrambled about, climbing the walls, jumping over supplies and even moving along the ceilings. The rapid movements were met with quick paced rifle fire from the remaining warriors, the few wounded warriors that were capable even fired from their position in the corner of the main room. The shadows continued to dash around in random directions before the first warrior was brought to the ground by a shadow dropping from the ceiling. The other warriors did nothing to help as they focused on the shadows that still dashed around the room; the fellow warrior would be avenged as the sound of flesh being torn apart entered into the room. Six warriors now remained upon their feet, no time to mourn a loss as the leader quickly moved to the right, an arch way leading to another room was their destination when a new sound echoed into the room. Slowly stepping into the building through the main doors was a new creature. That dim purple that rested upon the shadowed creatures was in a full blinding glow from this new creature that held all attention from the warriors.
This large creature stood no larger than any of the warriors, that twisted purple glow pulsed around the creatures 'arms' and 'legs', its 'head' twisted back and forth before locking upon the warriors. Slowly a glow would begin to shin behind a crease within the creatures 'head', a mouth one would guess only it ran vertical and spread open like a flower. A purple light blazed into the room illuminated all the warriors and the shadowed creatures as a shriek was let forth that shook the walls. This new creature held the other shadows off and the warriors stepped back from this new shadow as its mouth slowly closed.
"We were never able to win..."
The warriors were quickly to rush after the leader as the new creatures mouth closed, the shadows quickly dashed after the warriors as they all made it into the other room, the wounded warriors left to the new creature that quickly targeted them. The sound of gunfire echoed out behind the warriors as they found themselves quickly circling around a staircase, heavy armored boots echoing out as they moved onto the second floor.
The warriors dashed down the hallway into the second floor, a narrow hallway with several rooms on either side was the surroundings now as the warriors quickly spread out as the shrieks of the shadows chased after them. The leader and the smaller warrior from before dashed down the hallway, the smaller warrior holding their left fist before them, a small white glow forming from behind their curled fingers. The leader who ran next to the smaller warrior quickly spun and began to fire at the shadows that crawled from the stairway, the other warriors having already secured themselves in separate rooms. As the shadow creatures shrieked as they were pelted with rifle fire the smaller warrior would turn, their left arm extended down toward the shadows as a bright light formed within their hand.
"We struggled as best we could... but in the end it did nothing..."
The light would glow and shift about like a molten liquid before suddenly flashing out, a thin layer of white would flash out, shifting around between that blinding white and a clear transparent as it flowed down the hallway toward the shadows. This strange force shifted about like water as the shadow creatures charged directly into it, the shifting force smashing into them like a solid wall, the shadows being forced back and thrown into the stair case where many were left broken and lifeless upon the stairs.
With the shadows thrown back the leader and the remaining warrior quickly moved into the final room at the end of the hall. The door was slammed shut, the final two warriors quickly shoving a large piece of rubble forth to give them some time as the sound of rifle fire echoed out from behind the door from the other warriors that were engaged with the enemy. The leader stepped back from the door toward a sealed window, the windows had all been closed off by large sheets of metal leaving the leader and the other warrior sealed within the room.
The smaller warrior having to take a moment to lean against the wall, the rising and falling of their chest showed their exhaustion. The leader noticed this and quickly approached the warrior as they slide down the wall, their right shoulder pressed against the wall, the helmet bumping against the wall. The leader kneeled down next to them, gripping the warriors left shoulder and shaking them only to get no reaction, no signs of life from the fellow warrior.
"I've lost so much... so many..."
Standing the leader moved back to the window, rearing their right foot up the leader smashed the metal sheet straight through the window, ripping the large metal spikes from the wall as the metal sheet was sent out into the open air and to the scorched earth below. As the rifle fire suddenly stopped the leader turned to glance at the door, the shrieks of the shadows had ceased as well. The leader gave no more than a single glance before pushing out the window, keeping their feet firmly placed upon the edge of the window while searching for a way to climb higher to the roof. Battle scars upon the building served this purpose as the door was smashed apart by the shadowed creatures.
The leader forced gloved fingers into small holes in the side of the building, using nothing but their arms to haul their self-up to the roof, having thrown the rifle away to make this climb. The leader having reached the edge of the roof gave a final pull with both arms to make it up to the roof, laying their upper body against the roof before rolling onto a side to pull their legs behind them.
"I never wanted any of this... but now only I remain..."
The leader rose to their feet only to stare across the roof at that larger shadow creature that was surrounded by that blinding purple glow. The leader stepped back slightly, their heel hitting the air behind them that marked the fall to the earth below, the sound of dozens of shadow creatures dashed the thoughts of surviving should the leader attempt the jump.
Though before the leader could make another move the sudden sound of flesh being pierced caught their attention, the pain quickly soared through the warrior's foot as their attention was thrown to the ground where blood was flowing freely from the warrior's right foot. A large spike protruding from the center of their foot, having stabbed right through the armor plating, pinning the warrior in place as a firm hand gripped the spike in an attempt to rip it out. To no avail.
"I knew I would not survive this war... but no one is ever really prepared to die... not like this..."
The warrior tried madly to pull that spike from their foot only to snap their attention up as a purple glow flowed over them, that glowing creature having already closed the distance between them. The warrior slowly rose to stand before this creature; clenched fists slowly rose to the helmet. Fingers stretched out causing the helmet to depressurize before the warrior pulled the helmet off to show the human like face.
A pale colored flesh showed a heavy lack of sleep, hardened pale blues eyes glared defiantly at the glowing creature, the matted brown hair had long been left to the elements, untended and grown wild. The warrior's upper lip would curl slightly in a snarl, showing duel fanged teeth on the top and bottom rows of their mouth, eyes glowing a dim white as the anger flowed over the warrior's face. The glowing creature responded by slowly opening its mouth once more, that glowing purple light becoming blinding as the warrior was overcome by that blinding purple glow.
"The end was light... but all I felt was darkness... and hate..."
The glowing creature slowly closed its mouth before backing away slowly, black feet scraping over the rooftop, that twisted black metal protruding from every limb causing it to waddle and drag it self about as it moved away from the warrior. The warrior still stood their ground, unmoving and seeming fearless as the creature made its way away.
The warrior however did not relax, nor move at all as the creature disappeared. The warrior stood still, as still as stone. The warrior that once stood there was now a black figure of its former self, not like the twisted shadows but more of a black statue, a sheen even coming over the former warrior was light began to break over the horizon. Standing straight, fists clenched as their side, a defiant glare with bared fangs the warrior stands, never flinching even when faced with their final moments.
"... Silence is where I have been left... nothing but the darkness... and my hate."
