Chapter 2: Sirus first contact
Pvt. Karson ran as fast as his legs could carry him. He darted down the street and spotted a car parked near the middle of the road. He did a barrel roll over the hood and turned quickly. He pointed his M74D assault riffle outwards searching for his attacker. He spotted it and soon fired off three well aimed bursts at the trio of enemies. The first burst caught one in the head and it fell over dead. The second burst caught another in the chest and the last hit the same one in the leg and it fell over, picked up its head and then fell over limp. The third one, seeing what had just happened to his partners pointed his own rifle outwards aiming it at the assailant. He was soon brought down by the combined fire of the rest of 2nd platoon. "MOVE IT! ON YOUR FEET LETS MOVE!" Sgt. Patterson yelled at the top of his lungs. And with that, 2nd platoon was on their feet and speeding towards the objective.
Lt. Jonathan Wagner and Alpha Company of the 72nd marines had been called in to escort an expedition team moving to the Mazdo Temple. Rebels had been notorious for attacking UER funded expeditions. The UER (United Earth Republic) was a democracy that enveloped Earth and all of her colonies. Although it was a united government, all of the countries still remained under their own leadership. The only difference was that they all had to report to the central governor, an elected official who led the UER.
Wormhole generators were a necessity for inter-system travel. Earth had at least over two dozen colonies. Curiously, each had temples and ancient structures on them similar to those found on Earth. Such a temple was what the expedition team was going to. They had found a door which looked like it was meant to stay closed. Dr. Stephenson requested that that be changed. As they came on the structure the Lt. ordered scouts to search the area for any ambushes. When the OK was issued, they entered the temple.
When they came on the door, the Lt. ordered the engineers to plant the charges. A large flash resonated through the room. When the dust settled they were speechless. A large room lay inside. On its walls were light and dark crystals. As the expedition team filed in a lone private saw something move in the shadows.
"Uh, sir? I think something's in here." The Lt. turned to face where the solider was facing. He saw nothing. But he heard something. All of A company heard it to. With a hand gesture he told the scientist to leave. He also selected 3rd platoon to scout the room for anything here that wasn't supposed to be.
"All clear!" Sgt. Malarkey bellowed. The Lt. turned to his subordinate Lt. Jackson.
"Lt. I want a thorough search of the room an-" The Lt. was cut off by a agonizing scream as something landed on Pvt. Edmond's back and started to bite him.
"Aw SHIT! Open fire!" Came the order. The steady tat, tat, tat of the full auto M74D cracked across the room. By this time both Pvt. Edmond and his attacker lay dead.
"What the hell was that?!" Bellowed Pvt. Ritchie.
Soon the whole chamber was enveloped in noise as they saw a star map appear in the center of the room. Lt. Wagner saw what he believed was the Zeta Reticuli system, and Sirus 12, the very colony they were on. A small red target appeared on the ghostly image of the planet. Lt. Wagner then went pale as he realized what this meant. More creatures fell form the ceiling and pounced. Many were cut down by A Company's combined fire. The creatures were pale in color. They had a bulges head and resembled a horribly deformed human. Soon Lt. Wagner gave the order. "Fall back, fall back now damn it!" With that the troops filed out of the room and the Lt. lobbed in some frag grenades. He had to warn UERAF HQ of this immediately." HQ come in this is Lt. Wagner, be advised the Mazdo op is aborted, I repeat aborted!"
"Roger Lt," came Coronal Dyke's voice. "What's going on down there?"
"We've got unknown hostiles attacking us. They've come from in the temple!
Admiral Freeman stood at the bridge of the UERNF cruiser Triumphant. He was in charge of the 7th Battle Group. The battle group had 6 destroyers, 7 frigates, and 1 cruiser. Their task was to patrol for any pirates, rebels, or even the occasional crazy trying to ram his ship into a commercial vessel.
"Sir, I'm picking up a class 7 long range beacon." Navigations operator Lt. Jackson called out.
"Isolate it." Freeman said.
"Sir, it's coming from the surface! Wait, hold on." The color quickly drained from the Lieutenant's face." S-sir, we've got worm-hole exit points."
"How many?" Freeman asked, thinking rebels or pirates.
"Counting 37 total."
It was Freeman's turn for the color to drain from his face. "Give me a visual." A small screen pulled down. As it zoomed in it showed many ships. They didn't look familiar to Freeman though. They looked alien in design. The lead ship had a glow on it. Soon the glow turned into an energy spike on the readers.
"Sir, picking up a lot of energy from that ship sir." 1st Lt. Anderson shouted.
A ball of energy erupted form the prow of the ship. It impacted the destroyer Ambition. The Ambition exploded into shards of metal and debris.
"All ships open fire now!" Freeman yelled into his Fleet wide transmitter.
Pvt. Karson sat on his bunk. He recalled on his life. He had joined the marines with his long time friend Allison Mcfay. They had been both been assigned to the 72nd marines, Alpha Company. He was in 2nd and she was in 1st platoon. She, along with 3rd platoon was sent to escort some expedition. His platoon had been held back to prevent any "unnecessary" attention.
The door swung open and a very sweaty Lt. Wagner entered. "2nd PLATOON ON YOUR FEET LETS MOVE!" Soon all of the room was in action as marines grabbed their gear and supplies. Pvt. Karson donned his UERMC standard armor and rushed outside just in time to see what all the fuss was about.
A large ship easily the size of an UERMC Nighthawk drop ship flew overhead a stopped a few dozen yards down from a hastily erected line of defense 1st platoon had made. It deployed several humanoid figures. Their skin was purple and scaly. They had a unguligrade leg set-up which meant their knees bent forward, not backwards. They wore whitish/silver armor and had a faceplate. Their eyes were a dark yellow and had a slight maw. He saw that they held some sort of energy rifle. They spotted 1st platoon and fired. Several balls of dark energy flew through the air. It impacted the cover that 1st platoon was behind. A private caught a bolt in the head. He fell over and Karson could see a dark scorch mark where it hit him. Steam was rising from the wound and he could see his flesh melting away. 1st platoon answered by peppering them with their own rifles. Several of the creatures fell with cracks in their armor. He noticed a new species. It was similar to the other except it had a large tail and a larger and more definite maw.
Karson finally realized he was in the middle of a battle. He lifted his assault riffle and pulled the trigger.
Many of these creatures fell but more came. Soon, most of the cover used by 1st platoon was almost completely vaporized. Many marines lay dead. Those still alive who were wounded the medics had dragged into the barracks and had set up an aid station. Finally the fighting ceased. 1st platoon had 30 marines in it. Now there were only 14 left not wounded. 7 were wounded and 9 were dead. 2nd platoon had 4 wounded and 3 dead. 3rd had 6 wounded and 8 dead. Karson stepped over the carcouse of one of the creatures. It had a slight resemblance to a dragon from mythology. He lifted his head and saw Allison standing over him. He stumbled backwards.
"Holy crap! You scared me!"
"Yea, I can see that." Allison replied with a giggle.
"Are you hurt?" Karson asked, worry in his voice.
"No I'm fine. Can't say the same for these guys." She motioned to the dead creature. A whirling sound swept through the trees and both Karson and Allison raised their rifles to bear as they expected another enemy drop ship. They were relieved when it turned out to be a UERMC Nighthawk. Under the drop ship a Jaguar 7887MBT was hanging by a harness. It was deployed along with several marines in its cargo hold. Coronal Dyke stepped off. Lt. Wagner ran up to him and gave him a salute. The coronal returned the salute.
"Lt. Wagner, we have a situation. It appears these creatures have a fleet and it is currently beating the hell out of ours."
"So we can expect more of these things?" Lt. Wagner said worried.
"Well these managed to slip past, but yes expect more to come."
"Damn it, sir do you have any idea what these things are?" Wagner asked.
"Well right before taking out the destroyer Ambition, they sent us a message. They call themselves "Lakadors"."
"So what's the situation up stairs?" Lt. Wagner said. He was worried and the Coronal new why.
"Well its 3-1, in their favor. Our ships are putting up a fight, but we might have to pull them out eventually."
"And then there goes our air cover damn it."
____________________________________________
For the next month and a half that's how it was. Lakadors would slip past the 7th battle group and it was the marines' job to clear them out. Soon however, the Lakador ships got the better of the UER's and soon Admiral Freeman had to call what he had left planet side. It was then Governor Hidalgo decided to order an evacuation.
Now it was A company's job to escort citizens, mop up resistance and clear lading zones for colony ships.
Pvt. Karson sat in the troop bay of a Nighthawk. It sped above the skyline of Alpagee city. It was the last huge place left to evacuate. Supposedly the Lakadors had set up an HQ in Cebola tower which was in the center of the city. Alpha company and other elements of the 72nd marines had been called in to escort citizens. When they hit the ground they moved in position to escort a convoy of civilian vehicles moving to the colony ship Threshold. Karson manned the .50 cal machine gun in the back of the UERMC jeep.
They were passing a row of buildings when Karson noticed a barrel sticking out of a window. Then it hit him. It was the barrel to a "zapper" (the marine nickname for the Lakador energy rifle.) He opened up. The wall exploded as the .50 cal rounds blasted the walls. The Lakador fell from his spot, or rather what was left of him.
It wasn't long before they reached the Threshold. Drop ships came in to pick up Alpha Company. There wasn't enough room for 2nd platoon though. They had to wait for another dust off to take them back to the destroyer Archilles. Lt. Norman was in charge of 2nd platoon. He walked over to a bench and sat down. It wasn't long before someone called out, "grenade!" Before the lieutenant could react, he, as well as three other marines, were flung from there position as a brilliant flash of light enveloped him. He was dead before they even called for a medic.
Sgt. Patterson, the new CO of 2nd platoon, ordered them to move. Karson obeyed without a second guess. Lakadors swarmed the area they were just at. They moved down the street trying to escape the scaly killers.
"Come in Archilles, this is Sgt. Patterson! The extraction zone has been overrun by the Lakadors! Requesting dust-off else where!"
"Roger that, I see a good LZ down the street from your position over."
"Roger, on our way!"
Lakador ground commander Azda rallied his men. He had just raided a human supply dump and found something curious. They recovered a cone shaped object. He had brought it back to their HQ that they had set up in a large tower in the center of a human-held city.
"What do you think it is?" One of his subordinates asked.
"I'm not sure." He replied.
There was a switch on it. Curios, he decided to press it. A human POW who had just witnessed him do this, went pale when he realized what the Lakador had just done. He squirmed and managed to say one sentence before a guard hit him in the head: "You fool, you've doomed us all!"
The Lakador commander looked at him and tried hard to understand the human words on the cone, and what the POW just said. He was baffled by it: WARNING NUECLEAR WARHEAD. When he finally realized what the POW had just said, he figured out what it was. He snared to his subordinate." Shut that thing off now before it-." The commander never got to finish his sentence. He was cut off by a flash of light that enveloped the Lakador HQ.
They reached the spot where the drop ship was supposed to pick them up. "Hey, there's the drop ship!" Pvt. Jackson called out. Karson, who had been facing the opposite direction, turned just in time to see not the drop ship, nor the Cebola tower that dominated the sky line. What he saw made him drop his M74D to the ground. A huge thermal nuclear cloud enveloped Cebola tower and rose above the city. Buildings and skyscrapers next to it immediately vaporized or were blown away. A huge wall of death rushed from underneath the mushroom shaped cloud. It destroyed everything in its wake. Karson, too scared to do anything at the moment, just stood there. Soon the cloud was just down the street from him. Windows shattered all around him. He watched helplessly as his comrades were swallowed up in the blast. He moved his hands in front of his head in a vain effort to protect himself. He felt himself being lifted into the air and propelled into a store window that was behind him. Time seemed to slow as he was pushed into the store. He landed hard but just before loosing conciseness, he managed to muter something soft but audible: "Allison I-I'm sorry."
He then felt his limbs grow numb and let death slowly take him. Private Joshua Karson blacked out.
