Freedom
#6 of Rising Downfall
The fifth installment of the series. This is the chance to bust out of here. Escape, or die trying.
How long has it been? 3 years? I think so. Man, how time flies when you're having fun planning an escape from this place that was once call hell. It was better when you were discussing it with friends.
Sly, Shadow, and Python acted like my bodyguards. We looked out for each other. I wasn't picked on as much, and if I was, this place would be their grave. By the way, my tooth did grow back. I also wore the necklace that Sly made; I never took it off.
The time had come a few months later. It was time to escape, one way or another. The whole prisoners were in on it. It was now or never. It had started when Sly and I were forced to fight each other to the death. He had me pinned to the ground, delivering a blow to my face. I will admit, he had a good hook, but mine was better. Gripping his neck, I pulled him closer and socked him square on in the snout. He fell out off of me, spitting on a nearby rock. That's when the guards stepped in. They were commanding me to get up and kill him, but I refused. One of them came over and he had his club raised, ready to strike, but Sly intervened by calling him out his name. The guard turned his attention to Sly for just that second and that's when I jumped onto his back, grasping his head and twisted it, snapping his neck like a twig. The two other guards were taken care of by Shadow and Python.
I walked over to Sly and helped him up. "You alright there, Sly? I didn't hit you too hard, did I?"
He smiled and shook his head. "Nope. I should be asking you that." He walked over to one of the guards and searched his pockets. Inside were keys to cells and the doors that'll lead us out of this place.
"Phase 1 is complete, Sly," Shadow mentions to him. This operation is made up of 9 phases. The first part was to get the keys from the guards. Now, we move onto Phase 2.
"Next, we 'Arise from the Depths of Darkness'," I said. "Wasn't there an elevator leading up to the surface?"
"That's right," Python said pointing straight ahead. "Down the hallway."
"Alright, people! Let's move out!"
"Hurrah!" we all shouted an ran down the hallway. The prison was huge underground, so getting to the elevator wasn't going to be easy. Fortunately for us, the prisoners had our backs. They held off the guards as we made our way to the elevator. As we got in, one of the prisoners, a human like myself, looked at me, then he turned to Sly.
"Sly, are you sure we can trust this kid?" he asked.
Sly smiled over at me. "With my life."
I smiled back at him.
"He and us... We're not so different. Abandoned... Forgotten... In retrospect, we are all brothers and sisters."
Well said. The prisoner looked at me once again and nodded approvingly. We had soon reached the surface and we made our way into a control room...with a door that was shut and unlocked. It was obviously a trap. All of the prisoners gathered at the door, waiting for Sly's orders.
"Sly, are all of these guys willing to do this?" I asked him while we were standing on opposite sides of the door. "They know it's suicide."
"Live free or die trying, Guil. They're willing to sacrifice themselves for us. We will make sure their deaths will not go in vain."
They pulled the doors apart and they rushed over, only to have bullets rained down on them. A few seconds later, there were 12 bodies stacked on top of each other. We spotted a mining cart nearby and Sly and Shadow rushed out to it and started pushing it along. What were they... Oh, I get it. They were using it for cover.
"Guil, you and Python keep these guys off of us," Sly said as he and Shadow continued to push the mine cart. I had my dagger out and ready, and, to my surprise, Python had pulled out a handgun. He must've snagged one from one of the guards. He opened fire on the near by guards, making sure that Sly and Shadow didn't get caught in the crossfire. I ran up ahead, slaughtering any guards I could catch. The rest were distracted by the free-roaming prisoners. This was a riot to remember.
We manage to make it to what looks like an office and on the upper level were the rooftops.
"Hey Sly," Shadow said as he stopped and examined a nearby locker. "You think you can break open this locker?"
He nodded and cracked his knuckles. "Sure, but it'll take a minute." He then looked over at me. "Guil, head to the top. We have a slingshot set up just for you. Give these bastards hell!"
"With pleasure," I smirked and headed up the stairs to the rooftops where a giant slingshot was set up. This was too cool.
There were two other humans that were on the rooftop waiting for me as they were holding the net up. One also had a bottle in his hand (it looked like a wine bottle) with a rag sticking out of it. I'm guessing it was what we were going to use for ammunition. It was called a cocktail (funny name it had). We put it in the net and stretched it back, aiming carefully at one of the buildings that were shooting at our fellow prisoners. Releasing the net, the cocktail was sent hurdling into an open window and, in no time at all, the entire building was engulfed in flames. Bull's eye!
I heard Sly calling to me so I rushed downstairs to see that he had bust open the locker and it revealed that it was filled withWinchestershotguns.
"Alright everyone, grab a shotgun!" Sly announced as everyone helped themselves. Unfortunately, these shotguns were too big for me to wield. I guess I'm sticking with the dagger. Fortunately, Python tossed the hangun over to me and he had some spare ammunition that he gave to me as well. Lucky me. Sly uses his new shotgun to destroy the lock that was on a gate so we can proceed.
"Our next step is to bring down the winged beast," Sly explained. "When I was captured, these humans took my equipment and stored them in a nearby warehouse. In order to complete this step, we need to get to it."
"Are we dealing with a dragon such as yourself?" Python asked.
"No, not a dragon."
"Then is it some sort of bird?" Shadow asked as well.
"Nor is it a bird."
"Then what the hell are we dealing with here?"
A winged beast? Is this some sort of riddle? I don't remember this being the name of our steps. If it's not a bird and if it's not a dragon, then, it must be...
"...a helicopter?" I asked, thinking it was wrong.
Sly nodded. "Aye. More likely, they'll send choppers for reinforcements so we have to be ready to take it down."
I nodded in agreement. Good thing I saw a picture of a helicopter in a picture book in my brother's room. We were making our way to the building while the prisoners were scattering to distract the guards. We weren't gonna go down without a fight! Freedom, or die trying. As soon as the warehouse came into view, the helicopter arrived at the scene just in time. Unfortunately, the door was locked, so we had to stall the guards so Shadow could pick the lock. Python, Sly and I stood guard.
"By the way, Guil," Python asked, "how did you figure out it was a helicopter?"
"Um," I hesitated a little bit. "My father taught me how to think outside the box."
"And who exactly was your father? No parent would train their child at this age to use a blade and even a gun."
"...his name was Nixon Hawkings..." I saw them get a shocked expression on their faces as if they knew my father.
"C-Captain Hawkings was your father?!" Sly asked me.
I nodded. "I take it you were a Hawk Warrior?"
"Yes. I was the one who sent your father a message about the invasion before I was compromised."
"How are you still alive?"
"They saw that I had amazing strength than your average dragon. So they kept me alive." He sighed. "Your father is an amazing commander. We had gotten the drop on these freaks for the past 6 years. And now, this..."
"And now, my father is dead..."
He turned to me in surprise. "What?!"
"He was murdered by a dragon that I have never seen before."
"I see..." I could tell he was angry and sad at the same time; he felt guilty for not being there for him. That's exactly how I felt before.
"But, he would want us to be strong," I said as confidently as I could. "So, we must press on." They looked at me and nodded as we waited for Shadow to get the door unlocked. I had never been in warfare such as this. I was, honestly, having fun.
We held them off for five minutes until Shadow got the door open and we all ran inside. Once inside, Sly rushed over to a desk where a green backpack was lying on it. He opened it and rustled through it and then pulled out a crossbow with a harpoon in it.
"Nice crossbow, dude," Python said grinning.
"Thanks," he replied. "It was my grandfather's. He used it a long time ago in a war with the Masked Eagles. He was a natural shot and now he passed it on to me."
"What are you planning on doing with that?"
"You'll see." He ran back outside to where the helicopter was and aimed the crossbow at it. Then, he pulled the trigger and the hook was sent flying into the cockpit of the helicopter and it came down harder than a brick into the closest building.
"Holy smokes!" I screamed out in excitement as it was my first time seeing an explosion up close and personal. "Look at the fireworks! Awesome!"
They all laughed at my silly behavior. We were now entering the half-destroyed building and heading up the stairs. Running down the hallway on the second floor, we heard the alarm went off and we noticed down the hall that a huge door was closing.
"Hurry!" Sly shouted as we picked up the pace, but judging by the speed of the door, we were going to be trapped.
"We're not going to make it!" I shouted.
"Maybe not us, but you will!"
I looked at Sly. "What do you mean by that?" I got my answer as he suddenly grabbed and threw me hard across the hall, making me slide under the door just when it was about to close. The door shut behind me as I quickly got to my feet and I called out to Sly.
"We're alright!" he yelled from the other side of the door. "There should be a room and inside that room is a lever. It operates the door! Hurry!"
I quickly spotted the room which looked like an office and next to a chair was the lever. As I grabbed it, more Masked Eagles came in; shooting at the office, but luckily for me, the glass that they were shooting at was bulletproof. I pulled down, but the lever was stuck. Great. The guards were getting closer as I continued to pull on the lever. Finally , it started to budge as I pulled it all the way down, the door starting to rise up again. Sly and the others ran out, unloading a clip into the guards before moving onto the next area.
Sly stops in front of a steel door which looked like a vault.
"This is it," he says examining the door.
"What's behind door number 2?" I asked him.
"Your weapon."
"My what?"
He looks around and spots a blue canister and picks it up.
"This blowtorch will do nicely."
"A blow what?"
"The blowtorch will help me burn my way through the vault."
"So, you can get the--" There was an explosion coming from a few feet behind us as some more Eagles came in, only this time they had shotguns and some thicker armor on.
"You guys are going to have to cover me while I get this open. Do whatever you can to keep them off of me!" We all nodded and took our positions and returned fire. These guys were tougher than the normal Masked Eagles. They were taking the prisoners out one by one. And we were starting to get outnumbered.
"Sly, get that damn door open!" Python yelled out, trying to rush him.
"Hey, this isn't like walking through a fresh meadow!" he shouted back. "I'm almost there!" I was starting to run out of ammo. At the same time, I was, foolishly, trying to avert all of the attention to me to get them off my friends. I was hanging in there for the most part. The others saw my plan and they didn't agree with it as they were trying the same maneuver as me.
A few seconds later, I heard Sly shout out: "I got it! Quick, Guil! Grab what's on the shelf!" I turned around and went into the vault and looked up and saw what looked like a mini gun that they use on the helicopters. It looked heavy. Could I really carry that? I looked over at Sly and shook my head.
"Sly, I don't think I can carry that thing," I said to him. Then I got an idea. "Maybe you can carry it?"
He blinked as he wasn't sure if he should.
"The kid's right, boss," Shadow exclaimed. "You look like you'd be a natural at carrying that gun around."
He rubbed the back of his head.
"I dunno..."
"C'mon, go for it!" I cheered him on.
He chuckled. "Oh alright then." He went into the vault and picked up the gun, walking back out with a cocky look on his face. "Let's do this." Some guards started rushing down the hallway and Sly unleashed hell by firing his new weapon; a barrage of bullets flying down the hallway, piercing the armor of the shotgun-wielding Masked Eagles. Sly started walking down the hallway, us following behind watching him enjoying annihilating the guards. He walks out of the hole in the wall from the explosion earlier, taking care of the incoming trucks that was backup and taking down the helicopters as they tried to drop off the guards that were back up as well. Explosions were occurring every 3 seconds and bodies of the Masked Eagles were sent flying through the air. We were almost at the exit. We were going to make it! Until...
POP! Something went off during the commotion. There were clouds of smoke appearing in the battlefield and it wasn't from the fire. It was making my eyes water and everyone collapsed over and was coughing violently.
"They're using tear gas! We need to get out of here!" Sly shouted as he dragged Shadow and Python out of the gas. I, on the other hand, was on the ground, coughing and losing my vision. My eyes were so full of water that I couldn't see properly. I was about to pass out until I felt a pair of hands grab me and drag me off. Who was it? Was I captured again?
I regain my vision a few second later to see that Shadow was looking at me.
"Are you okay, Guil?" he asked me.
I nodded slowly as I wiped my eyes. "T-Thank you..."
I saw him smile at me as he got up. I looked around and it looked like we were in some sort of storage room. I saw saws and hammers and other old stuff that seemed like they were confiscated by the Masked Eagles. I then looked over at Sly and Python. Python was observing Sly's wings, which were a bit crocked. I think he broke them.
"Are you going to be alright, boss?" Python asked.
"Yes, I'll be fine," Sly said as he looked over at two objects that had blankets over them. "Gentlemen... The time has come... We have fought too hard for this... This will lead us to the final step." He took the blankets off of the object to reveal that it was a motorcycle. Python and Shadow took the blanket off of the second motorcycle. "Boys, freedom will soon be ours."
I slowly stood up, still coughing from the tear gas. I saw Python and Shadow get on the second motorcycle with Shadow at the handle. Sly had gotten on the first one since he lost the use of his wings. He looked over at me.
"Guil, you're with me," he said to me. "Let's ride."
I chuckled softly and wobbled over, trying to overcome the effect of the gas as I climbed onto the motorcycle with him. I had no experience whatsoever when it came down to these types of vehicles and Sly noticed that I wasn't exactly knowing what I was doing.
He looked down at me and said: "Just hold onto me. It's going to be a bumpy ride." I nodded and held onto him and he was starting it up. Then, in a few short minutes, we shot out of the window and out of the storage room and onto the road. Of course, the Masked Eagles were right behind us. They were going to do whatever it takes to stop us. They were...persistent.
Helicopters, oncoming trucks, and other motorcycles were speeding down the road after us. They set up roadblocks that would stop us from getting our freedom but these measly traps were not going to stop us. We heard a train coming as we approached some train tracks.
"Well Guil, this is your stop," Sly looked back at me.
I looked at him in surprise. "Say what?"
"The train, kid. Get on the train."
"N-No. If I'm getting on, the three of you are coming with me."
He shook his head. "Nah... We'll be alright. We'll get these guys off of you."
I didn't budge. These guys were the first friends that I ever had. I couldn't be alone again... I still couldn't get over the departure of my parents. I refuse to be that way again.
"Guil," Python said. "Our paths will cross gain one day."
"We'll be alright," Shadow smiled. "We promise."
I blinked. "Promise?"
"Cross our hearts and hope to die," Sly grinned as he picked me up by the scruff of my shirt. "We are brothers, Guil. Now and forever. Now go!" He tossed me over to the train and I landed in an open train car and I watched them ride off into the morning sun with the Masked Eagles still on their tail. I couldn't do anything to convince them to come with me. But they...really did care for me...and my safety... We...were brothers. Sly... Shadow...Python... Don't die on me... You promised... We'd see each other again... I'm holding you to that.
