Savannah Blues (6) By Roofles
Isaac fingers grasped the clear, glass cup. Condensation dripped over his fingers and down the cup forming a small ring of water on the table. His soft paw pads, as dark an ashened as a fire place, slowly let the glass slip free of grasp - his nails trailed along its cool surface. Again he looked up as the door opened his heart skipping a beat, his ears jumping to attendance and the tip of his short strangly tail twitching in a wag. But again his ears loss their limp, drooping off his head. His eyes falling back down to the table before him and the glass he had seconds before been holding.
It was already half an hour past the agreed abound time. The hyena had arrived earlier in the day. The sun was reaching its peak and he was in high spirits as he opened the door to the small pub like restauraunt. The warm air was something that was seen much in the northwest and it was a refreshing change from the rain only a day ago. The clouds had cleared out and a baby blue sky greeted him as he left the Zebra's apartment and headed out. The air condition building was like a cool summer breeze on his face as he had opened those doors. His heart was in full spirit and in full swing and now it was back in the dark pits of the running days of before.
Ralph had offered to give him a lift. Buy him some coffee and hang out with him until he had to meet "an old friend." But Isaac had said no, lieing again through his teeth as he finally got the zebra to give in and let him go alone. He wasn't forceful or trying to latch on or be needy, it was just a small kind gesture the zebra had done after "riding him like the stallion he was" as Ralph so elegantly put. It only deepened the stabbing pain in his chest as he sat here now. Ralph had offered so much, asking for so little. And yet here he was waiting to see another guy. Hopes of seeing another man as if he didn't already "have" one already.
But that was silly, the hyena thought shaking his head trying to justify his actions now. He never agreed to date the zebra. Never said "yes" to being his boyfriend. Ralph was just jumping to conclusion, it was just sex. That's all that was. And that thought alone made the hyena dip his head, ears falling flat on his face as tears formed in his eyes looking down at that glass once more.
How scummy. How lewd. How slutty of him to think such things, to act on such things. It was just sex and the more he thought of that the more his spirits fell. He never really knew Ralph, sure he was just a part time bartender at the pub he always went to. Isaac had spoken with him once or twice and the two had gotten along great. It was so casual and flowed so freely he didn't have to push himself to talk to him. The zebra had just the warmest of smiles and an air of confidence that put him at ease.
But again it wasn't like they were really friend-friends. They were just good acquaintances. And they slept together. Yet somehow that made him feel a bit better or less gloom if nothing less. It wasn't like they were friends just using each other for sex, the cardinal urge of physical need. Ralph actually - possible - wanted something from the chubby hyena. The "exotic" species. Not some lion or wolf or tiger or - well anything that he spied on advertisments, on billboards or in magazines, photos, tv, internet ads... He was just an actual normal guy living his life and someone liked that from him.
Flipping his phone opened he could only frown as he saw there wasn't any messages on the lit screen in front of him. Gritting his teeth he closed it, putting the phone back in his pocket and looked up, out the window into the sunny day. An opossum looked into the window. Pressing those pink hands against it and opening his mouth on the glass letting out a warm breath fogging it up. He had to be seven, eight at most Isaac figured as the small marsupial took his fingers off the glass and pulled back grinning only a smile an innocent kid could as he quickly ran to meet up with his mother.
Normal guys. Normal furs. That's who he saw around him. The family of raccoons who ran the restaurant was bustling around in the back taking order and handing out dishes while having smiles on their face. The grime on their fur and sweat that trickled down from the chef's head in the back told him enough that he had to be working since early morning. And still he smiled softly barking orders at a young female who was doddling on her cellphone. She jumped up quickly hiding the phone that she was trying - not so hard - to hide.
You wouldn't see them in the newspapers or on tv. Yet, they were happy. An that alone made him envy them. It was ok to be normal, average. And yet as he pushed himself away from the table, pulling a few dollars from his pocket and leaving them on the table for a tip. He couldn't help but think that was why he was here now as he left the restaurant. The warm breath of the summer air greeted him. Filling his lungs as he took a large breath and pushed himself down the street with a sad smile on his face.
Was he only hoping to see Colin because of what he was, rather of whom he was? This was the second time he was late. It was obvious how little the hyena meant to the king of the jungle. The thought curled the end of his lips into a frown as he hit the button to cross the street. Colin and him had a great time last time. A single date and he felt on top of the world afterwards. But how little did that mean in the long run of things. A simple date that didn't seem to be going anywhere. Some fun times with no gain in the end of things.
If he planted a seed that he loved and nurtured he would hope it to bear fruit for the picking. Otherwise all this time and effort would be useless, worthless and in the end a waste of time. And he hated that. He also hated the fact he had used the word "seed" as he shifted his weight again, the slight numbing pain in his rear end reminding of him who was the fertile soil the night before. Isaac wasn't sure as he hobbled across the road how so many gay furs could take it daily and be able to walk around as if there as if it didn't happen.
He felt slutty and a bit dirty as the thought made him blush. He could barely recall the night before in his drunk addled state but the warm body, sweet breath and soft velvety lips on his made him giddy as butteflies flew around in his stomach.
The hyena slipped into a corner alleyway using the shade to look at his phone again. There wasn't any messages so he thought he'd send one himself. His thumbs glided across the keypad before putting it away. "Looking forward to tonight," was all he could manage to say. It was still only a first date, sex or not, and he didn't want to push the issue anymore than needed.
To seem needy made his gut clench as he headed out into the street again stopping at the bus stop waiting to catch a ride uptown a bit. It seemed subby to call, to text. And yet he had. He wasn't sure if it was because of the neediness growing inside him once more or the fact that Colin hadn't shown. Or maybe the fact that he only wanted to see the lion cause he was a good looking guy that he would love to take to parties, show off and be able to say he was dating him.
Everything he didn't want to be he was becoming. Neediness, loneliness and the stress of life was beginning to get to him. Isaac could see why some people stayed with some abusive relationship. The fear of being alone could push one to do some stupid things. And the idea of putting up with ones partner wasn't something he wanted to do. Emotional baggage or being late to a date without even texting. That kind of unneeded stress wasn't healthy and with school, work and his own friends problems were enough for him to handle.
Ralph may not be the greatest of guys or the most attractive, according to societies standards. But Isaac wanted to believe at least that striped equidae seemed to have some interest in him. The reply alone he got a few minutes later was enough to dull the stiffling, building ache inside. Still no text or call from Colin who all in all seem to have forgotten he exsisted.
"I'm working tonight. Josephine didn't come in. Covering her shift. Come in tonight, I'll treat." Ralph texted a few seconds later as the bus stopped again letting on a peacock.
Isaac looked out the window not sure what else to really think at the time being. "Sorry kind of lame. We'll go out another time, promise." The zebra texted. Followed by another one with a simple smiley face. Already five text in the past few minutes while the lion couldn't even send one.
"Sure. See you then." Isaac closed his phone. Bland and empty, emotionless text back. Not wanting to hint at anything more. Yet as he looked at his reflection in the window again he couldn't help but see a soft smile on his mug.
Ralph spun the tray around pouring drinks in each one. The tray still spun as he dropped the green olives in. Taking one glass at a time and sliding them across the counter each ending up perfectly within paws reach of the customers. People clapped and he bowed with a smile but his attention was already elsewhere, pulled away from the small crowd who fawned over him. His eyes only set on one. Taking a large glass he turned his back on the hyena as he worked his science, his art before spinning around with a large house styled long island ice tea.
"It's more fruity than normal, less alcohol so we won't be having another mishap like the other night. Though I wouldn't mind," Ralph explained see the look on Isaac face at the glass. Giving him a wink as headed back to help some costumers.
The hyena was sure why his face was flushing as he sipped the glass. Night had fallen outside and the pub had a dim, foggy light to it that had a subtle charm about it that reminded him of a home away from home. As sad as that may have been he couldn't help feel at home here as the striped weasel slapped on the back.
"Kudos, mate. Nice catch." The weasel snickered to himself before the gleam in his eyes told Isaac he had spotted another would be failure in an attempt at finding a boyfriend. The weasel didn't have high standards and yet he would always go for the impossible catch.
The white striped tiger was with a fox. Both were clearly out of the weasels league and yet there he went. Off to get hurt again, mope for the rest of the night only to come back the night day and try again. It was a stupid kind of gullibility he had. And yet no one ever chastised him about it. Just shook their head and went back to their drink.
"Cute guy," Isaac heard the next second from the waitress who playfully nudged him taking the empty drinks to his side. "I hear he's a stallion in bed."
"I'll get a saddle next time." Isaac mumbled his ears folding back as a silly grin spread across his face. He was glad she didn't hear him as she headed off to help another customer.
Ralph slid back a bit comically in front of him, going on his elbows and looking at him. "My penis is doing fine today, by the way." Only furthering the flush on Isaac's face. "Thanks to you that is."
"Well-," Isaac tried to explain unable to think too clearly as the zebra leaned over kissing him on the cheek before 'galloping' off again. Someone was in high spirits which only seemed to put Isaac there too. It was infectious. The zebra was like a dawning sun that warmed up everyone around him. It wouldn't surprise the hyena if that was why so many people came here. What with the gruff honeybadger stomping around.
Isaac finally had to ask as the waitress came by again clearing out a table behind him. He spun around in the swivel chair. Going full circle before doing a 180. "What did I say to Ralph the other day?" He blurted out, wincing afterwards at the lack of tact he had.
She looked over at him. The lynx was attractive. Young and had more balls than most the guys in here. Her fur tipped ears spun around to face him even before she did. Looking him up and down she, a smug smile crossed her face. "Taking five boss." She said at the badger who stomped past her to serve another group of people.
"Whatever," he said gruffly grumbling a bit afterwards as he put the glasses down nearly breaking two of them. Two of the males jumped as he scowled at them. "Enjoy your drinks." He spoke as friendly as he had before, before stomping off again.
Jennifer, or Jenny as the lynx was known by, took a seat next to him. "Well you talked about his penis. A lot."
Isaac took another long drink after that.
"But within a few minutes you were just talking about him. How sexy he was and how good he filled drinks - how good he could fill other things." She shrugged casually as if it was an everyday occasion. "Then you just went on stroking his either, even though you wanted to stroke other things. Your a real horn dog," she laughed.
"I'm not a dog..." Isaac mumbled feeble resting his chin on the corner of the counter. His hair was scritched up a bit and looking over he saw the zebra continue by with a tray above his head.
"Then you kept saying how much you wanted a man like him. Someone sweet and funny. Then you went on how good he made you feel always and just how he was the light of your days." She laughed a bit at that picking through the mixed nuts on the counter. "Something about having his kids came after that, we all got a good laugh at that."
She looked past him her ears again turning before she did. She got up pressing a paw against his shoulder. "But looks like you got someone else that wants to talk to you, have fun hun." The same almost twisted smile was on her face as she headed off again.
Isaac turned only to see that a golden furred muzzle press against his as a warm, large paw touched his cheek. Stroking his face and a low snarled rumble rolling into his ears like thunder off in the distance, "You didn't answer my text."
The lion took a seat next to him, sitting a bit closer still touching him. Isaac wanted to pull away but the aura radiating off the golden beast was a pull he couldn't get away from. "Work called. I tried to get a hold of you but my cell went out. Was busy all day, had to skip lunch and everything. Sorry," he mumbled pressing his forhead against his.
The warm, strong but gentle touch clouded his mind as a tongue licked his nose. The scratchy feel, warm breath and the grounding shaking purr shook the very stool he was sitting on.
There was a clatter of trays in the corner and a the sound of hoof steps before the lion was forcible pulled away from Isaac who was still love drunk.
"Whoa, whoa. What cha' doing?" Ralph laughed a bit unsteadily. A strong striped paw gripped Isaac shoulder and the zebra was noticeble keeping himself calm. "You know him Isaac?"
"Yeah. He does." Colin said casually. The air about him tensed but otherwise he appeared calm. "I'm his boyfriend."
"Funny. I don't remember him talking about you last night." Ralph said crudely looking down at him. The zebra was a bit taller than the lion but even so it appeared it was the other way around. "As I was riding him like a carousel horse," he snotted a bit. "A round and round we went."
"I can explain-," Isaac said getting up but he realized too late he had gotten off the wrong side of the stool. He should've gotten off on the other side, in between the two but had gotten off behind Ralph. And in turn, to Colin's golden eyes, he was taking his side.
"So the date was, what? Just something for fun? I was told you wanted something real." Colin looked at Isaac with a hurt expression ignoring the body of muscle between them. "I'm sorry I was late then, and with today. It's a bad start but I thought there was something more. It was an accident-,"
"It sure was." Ralph looked over his shoulder. "You didn't sleep with him did you?" "No but-," the zebra turned away. Again assuming some kind of confirmation with that. "Ralph it wasn't like that." Isaac tried to jump in grabbing his arm to hold him back as the zebra took a step closer.
"Look. I think it's just best if you left. Is all." Ralph snotted again pulling back at Isaac's tug. The hyena could feel the tension in his arms and hear the quickening of his breath. "This is a public area. I have every right to be here. And all I want to do is talk to MY boyfriend." Colin said simple enough but the undertone was clear even to the hyena what he meant. Ownership wasn't exactly common but unheard of with several species. It was usually a casual thing to show affection through social traditions and norms. Still some species took it rather offensively and was yet another reason why most species stayed within their own.
"Watch it." Ralph said again glaring. One such species was zebra's. He jabbed a hoofed finger in his shoulder. "Isaac doesn't belong to anyone."
"Except you, you mean." Colin stated coldly. Lion's on the other hand took the act of being with someone very seriously, even if some of the older generations had a 'pride' of females or males.
"Lets not get into this. 'We' aren't into that." Isaac said trying to get between the two. A striped arm kept him behind him and he wasn't going to force himself past an already agitated zebra. The word we was derived from his subculture of hyena's and it wasn't too common for the label of ownership took place in a relationship.
"Sorry. I'm not into MY man sleeping with some striped 'race-horse'." The slang stung even Isaac who winced at the comment.
"Ha, I'm sure you have a 'pack' of other guys. Go play with one of them." Again Isaac winced at the words. Calling a cat with a 'pack', a canine term, was an insult in itself. "Go have doggystyle with one of them."
A low growl escaped the lions lips as his fist clenched. "I don't need some nobody bartender telling me who or how to fuck MY men."
"Men? So you admit you have more than one."
"Sorry, pony. I'm not a virgin like you. I happen to have a healthy sex life - if only one at a time," he added giving a strong nod towards Isaac who was feeling like he was trying to get between a rock and a hard place. "Now then." He said coldly back to the zebra. "I'll be taking my man now, and we'll be going to a nice five star restaurant that I know some bartender couldn't afford let alone book."
Bring class into this, great. Isaac groaned. He slipped under Ralph's arm getting between the two pushing them apart a little. However the act alone was either misread or the lion didn't care as a strong arm pulled him towards him. Isaac didn't even get a chance to close his eyes as a fist flew.
Before he knew it he was against the counter and the two was duking it out. And just as quickly the lion was being pulled off the zebra, lifted off the ground and tossed to the side as if he were a hundred pounds lightly. Colin easily landed with the grace only a cat could muster as the badger snarled at him.
"Pro wrestler," he said simple. "Don't. Touch. My. Staff."
Colin growled but didn't press any further. "Isaac. Let's go. We can still make the restaurant if we leave now."
"Look. Just go. If you want to play with a throng of guys, go ahead." Ralph said wiping a bit of blood from his lip. His shoulders sagged in defeat. Not in the loss of a fight. "Just go." He mumbled looking away.
"Ralph." Isaac wanted to say more reach out help him. But he found himself heading out with the lion who was holding his shoulder with strong paw on his shoulder. Unsure of his choice was right or wrong. Only able to hold his head in shame as he left.
Even before his feet took their steps out he was shoved against the wall a low growl escaping the lion as a nose pressed against his neck.
"I can still smell him on you." He mumbled coldly as he pulled back a bit. Glaring at the hyena who couldn't even meet his eyes. "You said you wanted someone to be with and yet here you are jumping in bed with the first guy who lets you. And a 'zebra' no less," he said coldly.
"I was drunk," Isaac mumbled looking at him meekly. "It was late. I was drunk. You didn't call and it just...happened. I didn't mean to. It was a mistake."
Colin's shoulder sagged as the chill air subdued his temper. "It was just one thing after another. Phone didn't work. Then work. Its early but still, I don't want you with anyone else." A paw brushed his cheek and Isaac pushed into it looking down at that large chest. It still took several quick deep, unsteady breaths as the lion tried to keep himself in check.
"It wasn't like I thought we were still together. I figured it was just a one night stand. A one time deal and that was that. Ralph was just a shoulder to cry on. I drank too much and..."
Colin looked at his watch and at the night air. "Let's go out someone simple. Talk. And if it gets late enough...maybe you'll just have to stay at my place." His voice was softer than before his shoulders were sagging and he scratching his brow. "And I'll show you." He said a bit more deeply and lustfully as he closed the small distance between them. "Why it is they call us the king of the jungle."
Rough lips pressed against Isaac's and a scratchy tongue forced its way into his muzzle. Not the soft velvet ones before...
