Chapter 10:
"Jay!" The politician said in shock, eyes wide as he leaned back in his leather chair. "How?"
"How what?" Jayden said cooly, "How am I alive? How did I find you?" He gave a small, sarcastic chuckle. "As a politician, I thought you'd be able to for an actual question." Jayden pulled a chair over, stepping over the unconscious Blaziken on the ground. "Before I kill you, I'll give you a chance though." Sitting down in the chair, Jayden leaned back, "For old times, sakes."
Senator Rossi gulped, his eyes frantically darting around. "Who hired you? You signed up with Greyson, didn't you?" He said, wincing as he brought his arm up to wipe his bloody nose. "I can pay double whatever he's paying you."
Jayden gave a hollow smile. "Money? I have plenty of that," he placed his arms behind his head, weaving his fingers together. " 'fraid you'll have to give me something more substantial." Looking to the ceiling, he closed his eyes as he waited for the Senator to come up with something.
The Senator shook his head, thinking. His head shot up, "Information! You always valued information!" The Senator's voice seemed to have taken on an almost pleading tone.
"Information?" Jayden said, opening his eyes, and looking at Senator Rossi. Being careful not to let to much interest show, Jayden kept his voice neutral. "What kind of information could you give me?"
The Senator smiled, before dropping it with a wince. "He never tells new people where his safe-house is. I can give you that information."
Jayden laughed, leaning back again. "And how do you know I'm new?"
The Senator stammered a bit at that question, "We-well, I-I-I have my sources...." he trailed off, looking nervously at Jayden.
"Hmm, yes, well." Jayden leaned forward, clapping his hands together, and rubbing them. "I'm going to guess you know nothing about his contracts?"
"Yeah, I know about some of them," the Senator said quickly, reaching for a drawer. Jayden held up a hand, doing a small tsk-tsk, and Senator Rossi moved slower. He pulled out an envelope, setting it on the table, and sliding it to Jayden. "That's all the contracts that he's on now, th-that I know about."
Jayden picked up the envelope, undoing the string and pulling out some papers. He scanned over the top page, then flicked to the next page. Each one had a picture, names, dates, psychological evaluations, and other information a potential assassin would need. The first three were of no value to Jayden, and was starting to think he wouldn't get any information as he read over the fourth, until he reached the fifth spreadsheet.
Pulling it out, he started to read over it, looking at the picture clipped to it. The more he read, the more confused he got. Setting it down on the desk, he looked at the Senator. "Who assigned this contract?" He turned it deftly, pushing towards the Senator.
With shaking hands, the Senator picked it up, looking at the spreadsheet. "I-I never get who give the contractors, just the targets he's been assigned." He handed the paper back to Jayden, wincing as they were taken out of his hands.
Jayden gave a "hmph," throwing the papers back onto the desk. "Than what use are these? There's no point in pressuring my boss, he'll just shoot me."
The Senator gulped again, nervously looking around the room. The shattered door still had a piece of wood hanging from the hinges, and the wall on the one side of the room was shattered, the drywall exposed. With a slight exhale, he brought his gaze back to Jayden, "I don't have any other information for you. That's all I have....." he trailed off as Jayden continued to stare at him.
With out standing up, or raising his voice, "Then what use are you? If that, truly, is the case, what's to keep me from pulling my pistol, and putting one in-between your eyes?" Jayden leaned closer, "and I would too, except that you're holding out on me." He leaned away, back into his chair, "I always could read you."
Senator Rossi swallowed again, eyes flicking over Jayden. "Dear god," he whispered, "you know..."
Jayden smiled, his hands coming together so that his finger-tips were touching. "Yeah, I know," he leaned forward suddenly, "I know that you put a contract out on me."
"What are you talking about?" The Senator said with wide eyes. "Jay, I would never..." He trailed off when Jayden held up a hand.
Looking down with his eyes closed, Jayden said, "Don't bother trying to deny it. All I want to know is who you hired."
Senator Rossi was now sweating nervously, "I swear, it wasn't on you." He gulped audibly, "It was only on that Lucario you travel with." He coward when Jayden looked up at him.
"How do you know she's a Lucario?" He asked in a terrifyingly calm tone, "She evolved less then a week ago."
The Senator felt a shiver run up his spine now that his lie had been called out. "Jay, brother," he chuckled nervously, "it was just an assumption, ya know." He blinked again, and his left arm started to shake. Gripping his right hand over his left bicep, he continued to stare at Jayden. Licking his lips, "I always liked you, even after Nigeria." Making to stand up, he stopped when Jayden tilted his head to the side, although the Senator continued to speak, "We can work out any problems that we have between us." He started to nervously chuckle again, "After all, we're friends, right?"
Jayden stood up from his chair, making Senator Rossi flinch back into his chair. "One time, maybe," Jayden chuckled dryly, "it is a stretch to think we are now. So," he moved the chair he'd been sitting in off to the side, "I would, honestly, like to know why you decided to put this contract out. On Aura, the one thing in this world that could keep you and your," he paused for a moment, taking a deep breath, "associates, safe from me."
Jayden started to slowly pace in front of the desk, Senator Rossi watching with slow turns of his head. Continuing his speech, "Why would you do such a foolish thing, when I have so much on you? On your past, your present, embarrassing secrets." He suddenly stopped, pivoting on his left foot to face the Senator again. "Not only that, but my particular skill set, namely the elimination of high-value targets without leaving a trace of my existence, should have given you pause." Leaning on the desk, bracing himself with his arms, Jayden continued, "So I ask: why did you put the contract out?"
The Senator's forehead was covered in sweat, and he took an arm to wipe it off. "Jay," he started slowly, eyes glancing around as he tried to figure out what to say, "I'd never put it out on her if you weren't needed." Rossi suddenly cowered as Jayden slammed his fist against the desk.
"Why the hell do you need me! There are a dozen others out there," Jayden threw his right arm in a wide sweep behind him, "easily as useful as me! But they don't have baggage! They haven't or won't retire!" He brought his arm back, clenching his hand into a fist as he pointed at the Senator, "So you will explain why you need me."
"There's no simple answer..." the Senator started.
"That's bull, and we both know it." Jayden said, still leaning on the desk.
"damnit," Senator Rossi muttered, glancing off to the side again. Taking a deep breath, the Senator looked at Jayden, "Yeah, there is always a simple answer. We need you, a job only you can do...."
Jadyen cut him off, "That I don't believe. There are, as I said, plenty of agents just as qualified as I was. I quit and I don't want back in."
Senator Rossi chuckled to himself, suddenly becoming bolder. "You forget one of the key rules of the game. Once you're in, you can't just up and out. Ah, damn," he said suddenly as his nose started bleeding again, making him bring a handkerchief up to his face. With a sniff, he threw the handkerchief onto the desk. "Besides, you do this last job, you'll be completely cleared. No strings attached."
"There were no strings attached when I left the Agency."
"ah, yeah." Senator Rossi said, tilting his head side to side. "I can see how you might think that." Holding up a finger, "But," he pulled out another file, and slid it towards Jayden, "no signature from the President, meaning that you were never officially released." He gestured his head towards the file, "This one has all the original terms, just that this time, it'll be completely official."
Jayden looked at the file as it lay on the desk, taking deep breaths. With a deep sigh of resignation, "What do I have to do?"
Senator Rossi smiled a little, taking the handkerchief and wiping his face again, "Have you ever heard of Mical Gorchensky?" Jayden shook his head negative, and Rossi gave a small sigh, "I thought not." Reaching into another drawer, he pulled out a thin folder, "This is all the information we have on him, least that I have access to."
Jayden reluctantly picked up the file, and opened it, looking through the papers. The Senator continued speaking as Jayden looked the file over, "As you can see, there is almost nothing we have on him. You'll have to..."
Jayden cut him off, throwing the file back down. "I won't do it," he said, taking a step back, "I have a new proposition for you."
Senator Rossi cowered in his chair again, muttering "Jay, old friend, old buddy, old pal, I'm sure we can work something out, this was just one of the proposals I was told I could put to you."
Jayden continued to stare down the man, before he said "You lost the right to call me a friend when you put the contract on her."
"C-come on Jay, w-we can work this out!" Senator Rossi said, still sitting behind his desk. The brown-headed politician had another sliver of blood running from his nose as he watched Jayden fearfully.
Jayden was standing on the other side of the desk, black overcoat hanging down to his ankles. The ski-mask was still bunched up on-top of his head. His blue eyes seemed to be burning with the rage behind them. "We're past 'working this out'," Jayden said in a deadly calm tone.
"No-now, there's no need to be hasty!" Senator Rossi was nervous, sweating bullets down his face that he wiped away with the back of his hand. "How was I to know what he was going to do!" The politician tried a nervous chuckle, but stopped when Jayden scowled. Swallowing deeply, the politician let out a nervous sigh.
Jayden reached into his coat, never taking his eyes off of the man sitting at the desk. Senator Rossi's eyes went wide when he saw Jayden pull out a pistol, his face never showing emotion as he leveled the .45 pistol, silencer on the end, to the man.
"Jay! Come on!" The man was starting to get really nervous now. "Remember Baghdad? I saved your life there." The politician cowered in his chair, trying to make himself as small as possible.
"That you did." Jayden said, never taking the gun off of the politico's head. "But," he thumbed the hammer, pulling it back with an ominous click, "that debt was paid in Istanbul, in case you forgot."
The man's eyes grew wide as he stuttered as he quickly thought of how to save himself. Then an idea hit him, "Jerusalem! You never paid me back for that!"
Jayden's eyes narrowed, the grip on his gun tightening. "I guess your right. But does it matter?" With that,he squeezed the trigger, even as the politician shouted. The hammer flew forward with a small click, and Jayden smiled as Rossi continued to shout, futilely holding a hand up. "As I said, it doesn't matter what you want with me, or what 'debts' I owe you. You're going to do three things," Jayden held up his left hand, his trigger finger going up, "First, you'll give me that release, signed and documented." It would have been hard for the Senator to move any faster as he pulled out the paper, and scratched his name in.
Nodding as Senator Rossi slipped the paper back into the file, and tied it, Jayden held up a second finger, "Second, you'll forget my name, everything I'm capable of. You never try and pull me back into the fold again, and I'll never use my skills against you." The Senator nodded, and Jayden let his right arm fall to his side, pistol held loosely in his grasp. "And third, you'll tell me where I can find Aura."
"All I know is the group I hired, I don't know who it was specifically," Rossi said quickly.
With a nod of his head, "That's good, so who are they?"
Licking his parched lips, Senator Rossi started speaking. "Some organization, small, paramilitary, ruthless. They get the job done though."
"Name," Jayden said, turning a piece of paper around, and pushing it toward the Senator.
Reaching an unsteady hand to the paper, "This is not a group you want to mess with." He started writing, and when he finished, he pushed it back towards Jayden. "Are you going to kill me now?"
Jayden picked up the paper, slipping it into his pocket without looking at what was written on it, "I wasn't..." A splash of red, and the smell of copper cut him off though. With a look of horror, Jayden watched as the body of the Senator, his head leaking blood from the hole in it, slumped over the desk. With a shout, Jayden dived into the bedroom. Crouching along the wall, he slammed all the curtains shut, his breathing heavy.
Slowly, he made his way back to the doorway into the main room, peaking around the corner. A quiet curse left him as he looked at the body of the Senator, the blood starting to pool and run off the sides of the desk. Glancing up, he saw the window had a perfect hole in it, and looking, he saw that he had easily been in the line of fire. Narrowing his eyes, he continued to scan the room, before settling his gaze on the still broken door.
Sticking close to the wall, Jayden moved towards the still unconscious bodyguard. Reaching towards the man's head, Jayden slipped off the earpiece and unclipped the radio receiver. Slipping it into his own ear, Jayden caught in on the radio chatter. "...turbance in the Senator's room, mind sending a few guys to check it out?"
"Yeah, Ken and I will," came a reply, and Jayden quietly cursed again.
"Take Jennings with you also, might as well relieve the agents anyhow." The same voice as before said, clicking off.
The reply came over the radio, slightly statically, "Alright, we're heading to the elevator now." When Jayden heard that, he ripped out the earpiece, and still crouching, made his way back into the main room where the Senator's desk was.
Keeping out of view of the large window, that now had several large cracks running out from the single hole in it, Jayden slipped around the desk. Standing just long enough to grab a somehow unbloodied file, Jayden ducked back down and made his way along the wall and into the bedroom again. Opening his coat, he slipped the file into a pocket on the inside of his coat, and then zipped the pocket closed.
Taking a deep breath, he looked at the ruined doorway in the main room, before standing up. Stepping back to the edge of the bed, he sprinted with full speed out of the room, everything blurring for a heartbeat. With arms held out, a small grunt escaped him as he ran into the wall, and he spun around quickly. Running back down the hotel hallway, he lightly jumped over the still unconscious agents that had been in the hall, still making his way towards the elevator.
His heart stopped for a moment when a quiet ding sounded out of the elevator, and Jayden jumped towards one of the rooms, pulling a small knife out from his harness as he did so. Bracing with his left hand against the door, he slid the three inch blade into the electronic lock rapidly, and as it beeped, slid the knife into the space where the actual latch was and jerked the blade upward. A quick smile crossed his face as the jimmied door opened a crack, allowing him access to the hotel room. Sliding into the room, he quietly latched the door behind him, just as the elevator doors opened.
Jayden's eyes glowed a light blue in the almost pitch-black room, and he could see three figures step out of the elevator. Hearing them shout, one of the blue figures bent down next to the agent that was laying directly outside the elevator, feeling for a pulse, even as the other two pulled their pistols out. The two with their pistols out ran down the hallway, skirting around the other two agents, heading straight for the Senator's room, even as the third one stood and drew his own pistol.
The third figure moved slower, and Jayden could see that the agent was checking each of the doors as he moved slowly past them, pistol in hand. With a silent breath, Jayden tensed the muscles in his body as he watched the agent moved from door to door, inspecting them with a soft shake of the handle. Jayden continued to watch the agent, folding the small knife up again and slipping it back into his harness.
The agent paused in front of the door that Jayden was hiding behind, and the aura around him started to shift. Realizing he'd been found, Jayden waited, watching as the agent backed up, lightly bouncing on his heels as he readied to break down the door. Jayden continued to wait, every muscle in his body tense, ready to spring.
Time slowed momentarily as Jayden watched the agent kick forward with all his might, ready to knock the door down. Waiting until the foot was just about to connect with the wooden door, Jayden threw open the inward swinging door, jumping back as he did so. With a startled yell the agent fell forward, unable to regain his balance, and Jayden let loose an uppercut to the man's chin, sending him back into the hallway. In close pursuit, Jayden followed the agent, bringing an elbow down on the man's chest and driving him into the floor. The agent slammed against the carpeted floor, arms splaying beside him as his pistol flew to the side.
Turning on his heel, Jayden sprinted towards the still open elevator doors, slapping the floor button. A shot suddenly rang out, loud against the quiet of the hotel floor, making Jayden hug tight against the wall of the elevator, several shots following a spilt-second later, the reports sounding out. Still trying to make himself as small as possible, he closed his eyes, praying for the doors to close. When they did, three more shots ripped through the hollow metal doors, leaving behind holes in the wake of the bullets, and they buried deep gouges into the panel in the back of the elevator.
With a lurch, the elevator started moving down, the quiet mosaic elevator music playing. Stepping back into the middle of the elevator, Jayden paced around, hands on the back of his head as the elevator passed floor after floor. A sudden ding made him startle, spinning around and making him hug the wall. With a glance around the corner, he scanned the empty 10th floor hallway, and quickly made his way down it.
One of the doors opened though, and a woman, dressed in business clothes came running out, briefcase in one hand and frantically talking into a phone in the other. "Listen," she was saying, ignoring Jayden, who still had his ski-mask on, "I don't care, you tell our Tokyo branch to shove it, or you're next on the list to be cut." She bumped into Jayden, dropping her phone, "Hey! watch where..." she stopped talking when she saw the mask Jayden was wearing.
He held a finger up in the "be quiet" way, his eyes still a light blue. She picked up her phone, eyes wide, slowly backing up into her room. Jayden watched as the door closed, and he waited until he heard it latch shut before continuing down the hallway again. Reaching the stairway, he slammed the door open, running down several flights of the winding stairs.
He suddenly heard a bang reverberate throughout the long hallway, and he looked down the center area. Close to a dozen men in full tactical gear wear flooding into the stairway from the first floor, rifles scanning around as they came in. Jayden cursed again when one of them looked up just as he looked over the edge. Several orders were shouted, and the rustle of equipment increased as they started running up the stairs.
Jayden pushed off the handrail, slamming through a door that had a plaque with the number -7- on it. Sprinting down this new hallway, he skid to a stop when a Gardevoir stepped in front of him, looking over his shoulder at the doorway he'd just walked out of. "Come on, we have a meeting you have to get to, and you need this job." The Gardevoir looked at Jayden, not even batting an eye at the mask he wore. "Excuse me sir, my master and I have somewhere we need to be, so if you'll be so kind as to move?"
Jayden said nothing, still standing in the hallway in front of the Gardevoir. A young man came out a few moments later, briefcase in one hand, and adjusting his tie with the other. He stopped in mid-stride when he saw Jayden standing there, ski-mask still covering his face. The young man stuttered a little, slowly backing back into the hotel room, "Ja-James, maybe we-we should w-wait a few more minutes...."
"Oh nonsense," the Gardevoir interrupted, waving his hand in a dismissive manner, "we don't have time to waste." The Gardevoir walked back into the room, grabbing the young man by the arm, "now come on and get moving."
The Gardevoir took the young man by the arm, pushing him into the hallway, and bumping him into Jayden. "I'm sorry!" He said, stumbling as the Gardevoir pushed him playfully again.
Jayden said nothing, instead stepping to the side to allow the two to pass. The young man and the Gardevoir started walking down the hallway, towards the elevator, and Jayden turned on his heels, moving towards the fire-escape window. He heard a shout from behind him, and he risked a glance over his shoulder.
The tactical squad was swarming out of the stairwell, the lead two pushing the Gardevoir and the young man out of the way as those behind them swept the hallway. One of them saw Jayden standing by the fire-escape window, ready to open it, and he shouted "Freeze! Federal Officers!"
Ignoring the order, Jayden smashed the window with his elbow, ducking through the shattered glass as it fell against the metal fire-escape. Taking hold of the railing, he swung down to the next platform, landing with bent knees, repeating it again for the next platform, and the next. He paused for a heartbeat, looking up when several shards of glass fell past him.
One of the tactical squad was looking out the window, staring at Jayden. Staring back, Jayden tightened his grip the railing, locking eyes with the man, and smiled under his ski-mask. He pushed over the edge, falling down three levels and grunting as he grabbed the railing again. Looking up, he saw the officer step out onto the fire-escape, moving down the ladder-like stairs.
With his shoulders feeling like they were on fire, Jayden glanced down at the ground, and let out a deep breath. Letting his grip slacken, Jayden felt gravity take hold of him again, falling down for another heartbeat. With his overcoat fluttering around him, he fell, the grimy alleyway wall becoming a blur as it went past. The ground suddenly impacted with his legs, and Jayden bent fully, hands bracing against the ground.
He heard the fire-escape rattling, and looking up, he cursed again as he saw two of the tactical squad moving down it. Spinning around, Jayden sprinted down the alley, towards the rear-entrance of the hotel. An agent dressed in a suit, suddenly burst out of it, looking down towards where Jayden was running.
The agent shouted, trying to bring his pistol to bear on Jayden as he dropped into a semi-crouch, leaning against the doorframe. Dashing again, Jayden kicked the agent's hand up, knocking the pistol into the air. With a small yell, Jayden smashed a fist into the agent's gut, making him double-over, then brought a knee into the unfortunate man's face, causing him to fall back into the wall and slump down.
Knelling down to pick up the gun, Jayden slipped the clip out of the 9mm and tugged back the slid to eject the chambered round. With a light toss, he dropped it back by the knocked out agent, and ran into the cracked open door. He closed the metal door hard behind him, smiling under his mask again as he heard a loud thud against the door.
Slamming down on the latch, Jayden turned with a small flutter of his overcoat, jogging into the hotel kitchen. The chefs and kitchen staff all jumped out of his way as he came running through the kitchen, slithering past everyone and everything. Bursting through the double doors, he dashed directly to the right, running past a man that was pushing a room service cart.
Suddenly he stopped, leading with his shoulder and pushing into a bathroom. Glancing around, he paced to the stall at the end, stepping in. Tearing off his ski-mask, he bunched it up, jamming into a pocket. Rolling his shoulders next, he slipped out of his overcoat, and turned it inside out, so that the lighter side was facing out again. His harness that held his pistol, the small three inch knife, and his spare clips jiggled slightly, and he gave a sharp tug on the straps to tighten them.
He sighed deeply, running a hand through his short-cut hair as he hung the overcoat on the hook on the stall door for a moment. Jayden turned around, pacing in the small stall as he thought. Suddenly, he stopped, turned, and started digging through his pockets. After a few seconds, he found the slip of paper the Senator had written on right before he'd been shot. He stared at it, losing track of time as he did so.
The bang of the bathroom door being slammed open broke him out of his thought. With complete silence, Jayden threw on his coat, the light side out, and buttoned it up to conceal his harness. Running his hand down his face to gather what little sweat there was, Jayden exhaled sharply, hit the flush button on the toilet, and stepped out. He gave little more than a glance to the two agents who were standing in the doorway.
Walking the few steps to the sink, he started washing his hands under the warm running water. He took a glance at the mirror, bringing a hand up to scratch his chin, his eyes flirting over to look at the agents. The two agents leaned to whisper to each other, and the one on the left nodded, both starting towards Jayden.
Jayden stood up from the sink, shaking his hands off lightly before walking to the paper towel dispenser, and ripping a few pieces out. The two agents came up behind him, and one asked "Sir, do you have any identification?"
Jayden turned his shoulder slightly so he could speak to them. "Yeah, I have some." Turning back to the wall, Jayden finished drying his hands, throwing the sopping paper into the trash bin.
As he did so, he turned to walk out, but one of the agents held out a hand to stop him. "Well can we see it?"
Jayden blinked quickly, and giving a big smile, he undid a button of his coat and reached a hand in. His smile slowly left him as he felt around in his coat. He brought his hand out, holding them in a defeated fashion. "I'm sorry, guess I left it in my room."
The two agents looked at each other, one pulling out a pair of handcuffs, "You'll have to come with us sir." With that both of them reached for Jayden, making to grab his arms and subdue him.
Jayden waited until they were almost grabbing him before making his move. Shooting his elbow out, he caught one across the jaw, knocking him away, and unbalanced the other. As the second agent stumbled back, Jayden grabbed him, slamming him against the sink. Jayden turned to face the agent that'd been smacked across the jaw, stretching his own as he stalked forward.
The agent was trying to slide up the wall, his right hand fumbling with his pistol. With two long strides towards the agent, Jayden leaned forward, grabbing him by the cuff of his shirt and lifted him up. The agent was panting hard, staring defiantly at Jayden. In response, Jayden opened his palm, slapping it into the agent's chest, making his body stiffen.
Small blue sparks danced over the agent's body as he slumped down again, and Jayden glanced around the bathroom again. The faint blue within his own eyes fading, Jayden straightened his coat down, and stepped out of the bathroom quickly. Glancing down both ways, he paced off towards the main entrance.
As he walked past a table that had a newspaper sitting on it, Jayden scooped it up as he walked past, opening it to read. Using the paper to hide his face, Jayden simply strode out the front door, slipping off to the side just as another agent walked out behind him. The news crews, which had never left, swarmed the agent with questions, trying to get information that they could broadcast.
Continuing down the street, Jayden folded the newspaper back up, tucking it into the crux of his elbow. The sounds of sirens made his heart beat faster, but he forced himself to keep his pace constant, giving the normal, curious stare as the police cars drove by.
The cool air was slowly brightening as the sun rose, and the crowds were starting to thicken as the morning continued on.
Coming to a crosswalk, Jayden patiently waited, hands in his pockets and arm bent so that the newspaper was still held, for the light to turn. The small crowd around him were almost all dressed in suits, and just had the air of businessmen about them, one or two talking on their bluetooth's as they waited. The light turned from a orangish-red hand to a light-green person, and the crowd started moving across the street, Jayden right in the thick of the group.
As soon as they crossed the street, Jayden broke off from the group, heading towards a large parking structure. He casually strode past a security guard, making his way to the stairway that led to the upper levels of the parking garage. With a steady pace, Jayden walked up the somewhat grimy stairs, the sun finally having come up enough that the dull-orange lights were turned off.
Turning off when he reached the level where he had parked his vehicle, Jayden's boots continued to clack against the ground with an even pace. Walking around a large concrete pillar, a black Humvee came into view, its dark tinted windows hiding what was inside. A small, slow sigh of relief left Jayden as he continued walking towards the Humvee, although his eyes continued to dart around, inspecting the area.
Reaching the driver's side door, Jayden placed a hand on the latch. He craned his head around again, his eyes glowing briefly, before nodding to himself. With a sharp pull of his hand, the latch to the door clicked open, and Jayden stepped into the Humvee, shutting the door behind him.
Sitting in the driver's side seat, Jayden simply rested his head against the backrest of the seat, closing his eyes.
Sleep was the conclusion he came to. A few hours rest to help mull things over, then onto a small cafe to figure out his next move. His hand slipped into his pocket, pulling out the slip of paper again, and Jayden pondered it, his thumb tracing the marks the pen had made on the paper.
Another deep sigh left Jayden, breaking his moment of thought again. Undoing his coat buttons, he slipped the pistol out of its holder, ejecting the clip, and giving the slide a tug to eject the round. As the clip dropped between his legs, onto the seat, Jayden shot out a hand to catch the round, holding it in his fist. Setting the pistol, suppressor still on the end, onto the dashboard, Jayden picked up the clip, slipping the round back into it with a soft click. He dropped it back onto his seat, leaning forward to pick up the pistol again.
First thing he did when he picked the pistol back up was to release the slide, allowing it to snap forward. Gripping the pistol in his left hand, he took ahold of the suppressor and twisted. A second later, the threads gave way, allowing him unscrew it from the barrel of the gun. Taking his right hand, which now had a suppressor in its grasp, he opened the center console with a press of his finger, and lightly tossed the metal tube into it. With a twist of his hand, he pointed the pistol towards the floor, and slipped the clip in with a click.
Another flick of his thumb to engage the safety, and the pistol followed the suppressor into the middle console. Using his elbow, he closed the cover, leaning on it for a moment to make sure the latch caught. Leaning back into the seat again, he lifted the lever on the side, reclining the seat back. Shifting his head slightly, he closed his eyes, allowing the comfort of sleep to take him away; away to a land where dreams could and do rule.
