A/N: Hey people! Sorry for the wait... But here is chapter 12! I'm going to hold back on chapter 13 for awhile... by request of CC... sorry folks... And I'm still working on chapter 14

Chapter 12: Bite.

Madi awoke in a rush...She'd just had a nightmare... A monster was chasing her through some woods, some sort of giant animal looking thing... It frightened her... She glanced towards the clock, noting it was close to six and sighed_, 'Might as well get up and get ready,'_ she thought grimly and went to take a shower. Thankfully it seemed the others were asleep so she tried to be quiet so as not to wake them. After closing and locking the door she stripped and turned on the water and let her thoughts flow as the water warmed her... So many things were zooming through her head... Kyle coming to Denver, her date with Joe, her conflicting feelings for Damon; and Cole...Yeah that was a big one...

After getting out she got dressed in her school clothes and went down to the kitchen. Seeing as nobody was awake, she took advantage of it and got everything ready for breakfast without any pestering.

~~~~
Damon had to smile at how quiet Madi was trying to be. Humans were so noisy even when they wanted to be quiet. He heard her step into the shower and he smiled. That was her routine he guessed; taking a shower in the morning to get ready for the day... After he heard her step downstairs he decided to get up and get ready himself. Grabbing his clothes, he went to the bathroom and closed the door, taking in Madi's scent while it still lingered in the steamy air. After he took his shower and dressed, he smelt food...Madi must have decided to fix breakfast... Matt wasn't going to be happy.
He went downstairs and into the kitchen, greeting her, "Good morning! You know you don't have to cook... Like Matt said, you're a guest..."
Madi only shook her head, "I got it Damon, I'm already halfway done... Hope you don't mind scrambled eggs and sausage, you don't seem to have much in your fridge..."
"I don't mind at all! We were going to the store soon anyway... so how did you sleep?" He asked curious. He had heard her tossing and turning last night a nightmare he figured... He wanted to ask her about it, but she would probably deny she had it knowing her.
"I slept okay, you?" She asked turning the conversation to him.
That made him smile somewhat. Madi hated talking about herself. She would always change the conversation to the other person. "I slept great! I'm pumped up for the game! Glad you're coming to." He really was. Having her there would make him play better, and he could show her his strength and how much better he was then Joey. Her stubbornness was one trait he both adored and hated. She was a fighter.
"No problem, I'm glad I can cheer both you and Joe on. I also never saw you play before, so that'll be interesting. What position do you play in?"
"I play defense. So I basically tackle the other team if they get too close to scoring a goal."
Madi only nodded, not actually interested in football but wanting to be polite, "Sounds pretty cool Damon," she said as she finished the eggs. "Will you go get those two up? Wouldn't want breakfast to be cold..." Damon nodded and went to do as she told.
The food smelt pretty good and he didn't want it to go to waste. He knocked on their door and Matt quickly opened it only wearing a pair of boxers, "I smell that she decided to cook breakfast huh?" he asked him. He wasn't mad per se, but annoyed. She knew she was a guest and didn't have to do anything but she did anyway... it was a bit infuriating.
"Yeah, I guess she figured since she was the first one up that she would take care of the food." Damon shrugged, "I guess it's her way of saying thank you."
Matt noticed that Damon was in a notably better mood then he usually was in the morning and he had to comment on that, "You seem awfully peppy today, what's with you? Usually you'd be grumpy and grumbling at getting up so early..."
Damon only shrugged again. He did feel a bit better. He had Madi in the same house after all. She had slept under his own roof; not because of some crazy stalker but because she wanted to. It made him pretty happy, "I'm just glad Madi is here... I like being around her... She calms me and I like being calm."
Matt smiled. He had been worried about his baby brother. Damon was always so angry. He didn't know why he was angry, but he was... Matt was sometimes worried that he would wind up doing something stupid and lose it completely... "That's good; I like you being calm as well... You worried me bro, what if you'd flipped out and killed somebody?"
Damon flinched a bit... He had come close a few times...So close to killing people just because they'd pissed him off. But he had always managed to just walk off and leave the person who made him angry, "Thanks... but come-on you guys get dressed and come down for breakfast okay?" He said as he walked back downstairs. He saw Madi was busy setting the table for everybody. "Hey, let me do that! You've done enough already," he said, trying to take the silverware from her but she jerked back.
"I got it Damon okay?" she muttered, "I don't mind, I'm used to doing everything; just let me do this."
That shocked him a bit... Seeing his expression she sighed, "I'm sorry Damon... It's just I'm so used to doing all the cooking and cleaning that I just can't stand it when I watch someone else do it for me... I'm so used to taking care of my mom and brother that I feel guilty when someone tries to do the same for me..."
"That's stupid! There is nothing wrong with relying on other people... Hell I'd probably starve if Matt wasn't here to cook... You take too much responsibility on your shoulders; you can't take care of everybody Madi. Let someone take care of you for once..."
He saw her shake her head and sigh, "I don't want anybody to take care of me! I don't need anybody to take care of me; I can take care of myself! You think I like having all this responsibility? Do you think I don't envy other kids? My childhood ended when I was nine! I resent my mother for getting sick while I hate myself for doing it! It's not her fault!" She began to cry, leaving a bewildered Damon to try and comfort her. "I'm angry at my family for putting so much on me! I'm angry at Kyle's mother for letting that bastard hurt him! I'm angry at Scott for hurting him! I'm angry at Kyle for never telling me how bad it was! And most of all I'm angry at myself! I couldn't protect Kyle and I can't save my mother so I feel so useless..."
"You're not useless Madi, trust me! You couldn't protect your cousin because he didn't want you to protect him. He didn't want to trouble you with his problems...Did you ever tell him about Cole?"
She shook her head at that, "No, I couldn't... he had enough problems as it was."
Damon smiled a bit at that, "You are just like him Madi; you try and deal with things on your own... not wanting help from others. But that doesn't work Madi..." He wondered if her and her cousin's situations would have been switched... Would she willingly put up with the abuse to keep her mother and brother safe? 'Yes she would...' he thought grimly, that'd be just like her suffering to make sure others were happy...
After a while she calmed down and thanked him, "I'm sorry for going all teary-eyed on you... Actually this was the first time I have cried since Kyle was shot..."
"It's okay Madi... I'm glad you can open up to me..."
"You're a good guy Damon, thanks for listening," she said as she finished setting the table. After a few minutes Matt and Tyler came down fully dressed.
"Morning," Tyler muttered when he walked in, "The food smells great Madi!"
Madi blushed, somewhat back to her normal self. She thanked him and the group began to eat breakfast. Damon enjoyed the chatter of everybody. Madi seemed to at ease around his family... he had an idea... Madi really didn't have a good coat for the night and it would be chilly at the game so he had an idea... "Hey Madi, I want to give you something..." he said, leaving the room. After a while he came back with a black fur lined jacket with silver piping, "Take this; you don't have a good jacket for tonight, so here."
Matt gave him an odd luck and he shrugged. He'd hardly ever used the jacket trick... The pheromones could break most humans rather easily to a wolf's will. Not that she was affected that much... she was very resistant to that as well...
"Wow Damon, that's beautiful! I can't take it though...It looks so expensive!"
Damon rolled his eyes at that... It wasn't really, all werewolves had jackets. They were used to tell which wolf belonged to which pack. It was also used to show a certain human was claimed by the said pack, "It isn't, trust me! Matt, Tyler and I also have one..."
She gave it a bit of thought... He was right that she didn't have a good jacket, and it was a very nice one. He was offering, plus it was going to get chilly tonight so she reluctantly accepted the jacket, "Well if you're sure..."
"I am." Damon said firmly, grinning as she smiled.
Matt decided he would handle the dishes while Madi and Damon began to walk outside. It was a bit chilly, and it was supposed to snow this weekend, so Damon put his own jacket on.
"Thanks for the jacket Damon," she said again. She briefly sniffed at the fabric; it had a distinctly earthy scent to it... She would be sure to wash it tonight when she got home as she assumed that he had been rough housing in it at some point... The duo began to walks towards the school in a comfortable silence. After a few minutes they split up as usual to do their own thing once they reached the gates.
Damon was somewhat relieved she accepted the jacket. Taking the jacket would let him claim her as his. Most werewolves would never harm a claimed human, and definitely not a Mate. He just hoped that if Cole was a werewolf he would follow Wolf Law and leave her alone...
~~~~

"So let me get this straight... You are wearing a jacket Damon gave you to a date with Joe?" Martha asked.

Madi just shrugged. It did seem strange, but Damon rarely seemed to go by normal standards; he always seemed to do what he wanted. "I didn't have a good jacket remember? My old one disappeared last week..." She had lost it at Damon's house... She liked that old jacket...Kyle had given it to her as a sweet sixteen gift. Even if it was paint splattered and ruined, it held sentimental value, "Plus it is a really nice coat..." she justified, shrugging.

"You bet, it's gorgeous...He never gave me a jacket like that... But oh well it looks great on you! It's just weird that he's wearing the exact same jacket though, but oh well..." she said as she closed her locker. "I'll see you at the game I guess!"

She ran off leaving Madi alone to her thoughts. She as very excited for the game... nothing could bring her mood down!

~~~~
Alex was sitting in his class bored. School was always dull for the boy. He hated it, but his parents were firm in the value of education. He sighed a bit. Finally school was out and he decided he was going to walk home. He hated the bus... The older kids picked on him because his family was poor... Smiley Middle School required students to wear uniforms, which saved his family a lot of money, and at least they couldn't pick on him for what he wore. About half way home he felt like somebody was following him. He quickly turned around to see nothing...
"I must be getting paranoid... I doubt Carter and his gang would follow me here..." he muttered to himself. A few more blocks and he got that feeling again, only this time before he could turn he was grabbed from behind and dragged into the park. The kidnapper put something to his mouth to make him fall asleep... 'Chloroform!' he recognized, as his consciousness dimmed bit by bit.
~~~~

Matt and Tyler had decided to walk home today... Damon had said he was going to get something to eat after the game, so they left the truck at work. They were enjoying their stroll until Matt smelled something... "Wait... I smell Madi's brother! He's in the park!" That worried him a bit. He doubted Mrs. Stone would let him wonder in the park by himself.

Quickly they both ran into the woods to the source of the scent and saw something terrifying. Alex was lying on the ground unconscious and bleeding badly as if he had been beaten. Over him stood a large werewolf with golden fur and baleful yellow eyes, "Hey! Get away from him!" Matt yelled as he charged at the wolf, changing on the way into his Werewolf form with dark brown fur, and crashed into the golden one.

But the wolf only smiled as he tossed Matt off of him, "Nice try, you were not the one I was hoping to lure in but you'll do well enough... See the boy? He is bleeding on the inside and will surly die...Unless of course he is turned..."

Matt snarled at the other wolf. What monster would attack a child? "You have got to be joking! He's a kid! Even if he was changed, he could die from the shock!" Matt yelled but the monster was not phased.

"Then I guess the boy will die here..."

"Who are you?" Tyler demanded trying to rouse the boy with no luck... "He's right Matt; if he isn't turned soon he'll die..."

"I'm Cole...I guess you heard of me?"

Matt snarled even more. So this was Cole and he was a werewolf? "You see, your brother has set his eyes on my Mate... that can't do..."

"Then why did you harm her brother? If she is your Mate why did you do this?" Tyler demanded still trying to wake the boy. "That doesn't make sense! Why harm her family if you love her so much?"

"Simple you stupid human, Madi is quite a stubborn girl. No matter how hard I tried, she would never submit to me! It was infuriating! She kept on defying me and the more I tried to bring her under control the more she fought! Then I came up with a plan... Madi loves her family and if something happened to it, it would break her spirit! And when it's broken I would swoop in and claim her as mine once more!"

Matt couldn't believe what he was hearing! Was this maniac willing to break Madi bad enough for her to be vulnerable to his powers? "That's sick! I have a question... Did you ever lay with Madi?" Matt asked... If he had, it would be proof that Madi wasn't his Mate. When a wolf and his Mate made love for the first time, they were bound together for the rest of their lives. It was how his people sealed the mating.

"Yes, I have lain with her before... but she still left!"

"Then she isn't your Mate then...you know our nature! She's Damon's! You lying with her would have made her unable to leave you if she was indeed your Mate... but she dumped your sorry ass! Leave her alone!"

"No! She IS mine! I saw her first!!! She belongs to me!" He snarled but then he smiled a sadistic smirk growing across his muzzle, "But I do have to go... Sorry that we couldn't have had more fun!" He said and ran off.

Matt was about to chase after him before Tyler stopped him, "Wait! You can't leave... You have to turn him now or he'll die within the hour!"

"I-I ca-can't, I can't ju-just take his life away from him... Why would I want to infect him with this curse?"

"Because, it's either the turning or death... Would you ever be able to look Madi in the eye and tell her that you had the chance to save Alex's life and didn't do it?" _'He had a point...' _ "Plus, you'll have to change me as well someday... that isn't an option... I love you Matt but you have to do this!"

"Okay... turn around Tyler please... I don't want you to watch this..."

Tyler obliged and turned as Matt neared the boy. His scent was intertwined with that bastard Cole's, and his heartbeat was slowing down. Gingerly he knelt down next to the boy and brought him into his arms. He slowly lowered his mouth onto the boy's skinny neck and bit him. Alex gave a major jolt of pain as Matt's teeth went deep into his throat. His blood was warm in Matt's mouth almost making him throw up. Slowly he withdrew his teeth and licked the wound, the bite mark healing in an instant. He looked down as he saw the kid's body begin to shake violently. The change would take several hours to complete, and by the next full moon the boy would make his first change.

"You had no choice Matt," Tyler said as he put his arms around his love, "He'll live see! His injuries are slowly healing... he'll be far stronger after this..."

"You don't understand Tyler, for the first month or two he'll be a monster... He'll have no control over his self in wolf form and I'm not sure if it's even safe for him to stay in his own house..."

"We'll figure something out. Come-on let's get this kid home. We can't take him to his mother until the turning is complete..."

Matt nodded as he scooped the shaking boy. Once he woke he would not be a human any more, and it was Matt's responsibility to inform him of the laws of his people... He was just sad that the boy's humanity was taken from him at such a young age.
