Confusion, how Confusing: Chapter 4: Sorrow only brings Pain
#4 of Confusion, how Confusing
"What the... Stupid door.." Vex muttered as he twisted the doorknob and pounded his shoulder against the door. After a few more pounds the canine sat down, his shoulder pounding from the pain of the collisions and short of breath. He started to panic, knowing that he was trapped.
"Uncle Danny! Josh! The door is stuck!"
A low toned voice was heard on the other side of the door, "Oh, I can assure you it's not stuck, but it's not going to open either."
"Wha...What?"
"You'll be staying down there this school break of yours, you won't see the light for a while."
"Are you crazy?!? I have no food down here, I'll die!"
"Well now, that's not my problem is it." The voice trailed off as a faint sound of laughter could be heard.
Vex whipped out his cell phone, "C'mon... turn on.. turn on....", he muttered. The cell phone light up, and pulled up a white screen with a loading sign on it. The cell phone went black, it died again. "Shit!" He yelled. The wolf started to panic, charged down the stairs and slipped as he did. He fell down the flight of stairs, his shoulder making the first impact on a stair, sending him toppling over.
Vex rolled down hitting his head on the steps and the wall to his left. In his staircase the stairs turned halfway through, turning at a straight 90 degree angle. The wall that supported the turn stopped Vex from tumbling any further, but also causing him enormous pain as his hip made contact with it. Vex's legs were dangling over his head, lying on his back. He turned himself over and slowly tried to stand, putting a paw up to the wall for support. He made his way down about four steps before he almost lost his balance, and then carefully descended further. Vex walked threw his doorway, door already ajar.
A thought clicked in his head, "My cell phone charger is on my desk!" Vex made a faint attempt of trying to walk over to his desk, but found his legs still too weak from the fall and managed to crawl over to the desk. He pulled down his charger off of the top, pulling it to his eye level on the floor. Reaching in his pocket, he took out his cell phone and placed it in the charger. The phone lit up and he pressed his first speed dial, the number 1 button. The phone started to dial, no answer. He pressed speed dial 1 again. This time he was lucky enough to get an answer, however, it wasn't who he wanted.
"Hello?" The voice was a female
"Umm, is Al there?"
"Well, he's asleep right now, I'll tell-"
Vex hung up. "Why would he be asleep right now? It's the middle of the day..." The thought was quickly taken out of his head as he started to dial another number. He looked up Jeremy's number in his phone and dialed it with haste.
"Hello?" It was Jeremy.
"Oh thank god, Jeremy, I need your help."
"Sure, what with." The fox said calmly.
"My uncle has gone mental, he's locked me up in-"
The room went dark, the cell phone died, and the call was lost. The power had been cut off.
"DAMN YOU!" Vex yelled in frustration, his uncle was smarter than he thought. Vex was completely cut off, he had no way of contacting the outside, he had no food, and he was alone... in the dark.
Jeremy's heart was beating quickly, he knew something was wrong... but he was still unsure exactly what. 9-1-1, he dialed quickly.
"Police Department, how may I help you?" A male's voice answered.
"I'm calling about a phone call I just received, my friend just called me telling me that his uncle had locked him up and said he was going insane, I'm really afraid, and I don't know what to do..."
"Okay, you did the right thing, what's his address?"
"105 Keller Lane, I believe."
"Okay, we're on it."
"Thanks."
The police station's phone was sat down; Josh emerged from the chair, and started to continue trying to earn his quota for work. He grabbed his keys to his patrol car and exited the station. "Looks like everything is going perfectly." he snickered to himself quietly. He climbed into the car, and parked his car at a nearby street, watching closely for cars even going one mile an hour over the speed limit.
Jeremy grabbed his keys, walking towards the door. "Mom! I'm going out for a bit, I'll be back soon." He yelled as he grabbed his coat off the rack. The fox opened the door and climbed into his mother's car, backing up slowly making sure not to hit his mailbox, and made his way towards Vex's house. Jeremy wanted to see Vex, knowing he was in trouble he wanted to watch the police do their work. Jeremy turned out of his driveway and drove off down a street, turning onto another, which then led to Vex's house. He had been there a few times before, to hang out, so he knew where it was.
The house looked as it always had, it looked great in the middle of the afternoon, and the house was large, three stories counting the basement. Jeremy parked his car at the edge of the street, leaving room for the cops to pull up when they arrived. About forty-five minutes of time passed, still no cops. "Were they ever coming? Of course they were... weren't they? Well, no matter I can't just sit around and do nothing, something's gotta be done."
Jeremy's heart started to pound again, as he walked up to the door, his paw curled into a fist... he was about to knock when his senses hit him. He lowered his paw and turned the knob to the door. Luckily it was opened. He slid in stealthily, not bothering to close the door fully, fearing it might make to much noise. Jeremy knows what Vex's uncle is like, and knew he had to avoid him at all costs. He battle crawled over to the basement door, making tiny sliding noises as his clothes dragged along the hard-wood floor. The fox stood up, and he saw the metal strip covering the door. He gave the door two slight knocks, and he waited patiently, lying beside the door again.
Vex's ears perked up. He quickly made his way to the stairs, and lifted himself up the steps slowly, each step bringing a sharp pain to his hip and legs. The canine arrived at the door, when he heard one more knock.
"H..Hello?" he whispered quietly.
"Vex, you alright?!?!"
"Oh thank god, Jeremy. No, I'm not alright; I'm stuck down here... I have no way to get out, you've gotta get help, please!" Vex said very quickly.
"Your uncle has put up some metal strip, causing the door to not open. I'll go get help, you try to see if there is anything down there that could get you out in the meantime."
"Jeremy, do you have your phone with you?"
"Yeah, I do."
"Slide it under the door, I'll make a few calls."
"Okay" The fox put his cell phone up to the door, trying to force it under. It wouldn't fit. He unfolded the lid and tried again, this time it worked.
"Thanks, now hurry please!"
Jeremy nodded, "Okay, be back soon."
Vex heard the pawsteps of Jeremy quickly rushing out of the house. Vex picked up his phone and dialed the only person he had memorized the number of, Brad.
"Hello?" A deep voice was on the line.
"Hey, Brad, I need your help." Vex said in a distressed manner.
"What's up, dude?"
"My uncle has locked me up in my basement, he put some kind of metal strip over the door to keep me in, I'm down here, I'm starving, starting to get thirsty too, my throat's dry, and I've got no way out. Jeremy is going to get some help, and we need you to help too."
"Ah, dude, that's awful, I'll get there as soon as possible, though I'm at a football game right now, so it might be a little while, but I'm coming."
"Okay, Brad." The wolf was starting to tear up.
"Don't worry, it'll be okay." Brad hung up.
Vex dialed another number, 9-1-1.
"Hello, this is the police station, how may I help you?"
"J...J...Josh!?!"
There was a click on the other line and Vex heard the dial tone now. Vex sat there, shocked for a moment, then got his head focused.
He descended the stairs for a second time on his injured leg. His throat started to throb, it was dry and very rough, and he could feel himself getting weaker. "I haven't even been down here that long... had I? I couldn't be this dehydrated." Vex gasped, "The sink!" He limped down the rest of the stairs and across his room, hugging onto the wall with both paws as he did. He reached his bathroom and opened the door, quickly stumbling over to the sink. He ran the water, fully putting it on cold and started to take a long drink. "Much better", he thought.
"Okay, now to find something." Vex started back into his room and opened his desk drawers. He flipped through a couple of magazines, a calculator, and several pencils. He threw them all out of the way; nothing was in the drawers that could help. Vex laid on the floor and crawled over to his bed, looking to see what he could find under there. Again his search was no good; nothing was useful there, only some scrap books of his parent's lives and some sentimental valuables. "Guess I don't have anything, I'll just have to pray Jeremy can get me out of here..." Vex made his way, again, back up to the basement door, sitting on the top stair, curled up into a small ball.
Jeremy arrived back home, he ran through his living room, turned into his kitchen, and made his way to the garage. He opened his father's toolbox and started to search through: A screw driver, wrench, hammer, other basic tools that he didn't know the name of, and a power drill. He slammed the box shut and dragged it to his car. This time he backed out quickly of the driveway, still avoiding the mailbox but causing the car the take a slight hop as he drove off quickly, hitting a pot-hole in the road as he did. No damage was done, and he continued on, going about 70 mph.
Jeremy left the keys in his ignition and ran to the front door, slowly opening the door, leaving it ajar incase he needed to make a quick get-away. He went the basement door and made a slight knock. Vex responded with a whimper. Jeremy opened the box and took out the screw driver, knowing that it would make little sound and possibly not disturb his uncle and his unknown whereabouts. He started to work on the bottom left screw, twisting as hard as he could to the left. He couldn't get the screw to budge. The fox twisted as hard as he could, and he could feel the screw start to twist. It got easier from there, as he slowly pulled out the screw and placed it on the ground. He started to work on the top left now.
A slam of a door was heard, and Jeremy's heart stopped beating for a moment, scared with fright. The door came from upstairs and Jeremy backed up slowly to hide beside a large china cabinet on the opposite side from the basement door. Foot steps came down, as he saw the face of the person who descended the stairs. It was non-other than the monster himself, Uncle Danny. The wolf had only boxers on as he made his way to the kitchen, passing by Jeremy. Jeremy stood up a little more straight, and mashed his body closer to the wall, as close as it was already. During this act, however, the floor creaked. This caused Danny to look right at the young fox's direction, now staring him straight in the eyes. Danny glanced at the door to the basement, noticing it was still closed with the metal piece attached, and a few tools were in the floor beside it.
Danny grabbed the fox by the throat, lifting him into the air. Jeremy made gagging noises as Danny started to tighten his grip on the helpless fox. He managed to get a cry for help out, which made Vex's heart start to pound as much as Jeremy's.
"Jeremy! Danny, what are you doing to him! STOP IT!" Vex's voice didn't go unheard as his uncle kicked the door violently.
"The little bitch is getting what he deserves, death."
"DANNY! Stop it!" Vex screamed at the top of his lungs, tears now running down his face.
The fox couldn't get any breaths out, yet alone cries for health... all that could be heard from him was gags slowly getting the life choked out of him.
"Vex isn't getting out of that room until I say so, and the likes of you ain't gonna take away my authority. He's my business and I'll do what I want with him."
"You're a monster!" Vex yelled. "You have no compassion, you're crazy! Lashing out at people trying to do good, hitting me all the time for stuff I don't even know I did, not caring what goes in my life, not giving a glimpse of concern to those around you, all you care about is your little sex toy!"
Danny tossed Jeremy against the wall behind where he was choking him. Jeremy fell to the floor, holding his own throat as it throbbed in pain. Danny charged at the downed fox and kicked him forcefully in the side, the fox slid several feet as the impact caused him to crouch up in a ball on the floor, getting pummeled by oncoming kicks.
The front door was shoved open even more than it already was as a muscular leopard charged through, his paw in a fist. He ran at the elder wolf, fist held back, and struck him in the jaw. Danny was taken aback by this and stumbled a few feet back, tripping over the bloody fox that lay on the floor. The leopard pounced on top of Danny, his fists flying like bullets pounding into the wolf's jaw. Blood fell from Danny's lips as they bled. Danny regained his strength from the unsuspected attacker and he flipped the leopard off of him. Danny gave him a good strong punch in the gut, causing him to whimper a little bit in pain.
The leopard put his paws up, in fighting position as he ducked from the next curled up paw coming for his face. He put a straight punch right into the wolf's tender area. Danny fell to the floor, paws covering his groin. The leopard gave a few kicks to the crazy uncle's sides, his body filled with anger as he saw what he had done to Jeremy. He grabbed Danny up by the chest fur and gave him one last good punch into his jaw; blood splashed his maw spreading across the wall, knocking Danny out cold.
The leopard ran over to Jeremy.
"You alright?"
"Ob..Obvious...ly.. not..." He said. "He...Help.. Vex.... Behind... Door..."
"Over here!" Vex yelled.
The leopard ran to the door, quickly picking up the power drill and unscrewing the screws. He flung the door open, to see Vex curled up by the door. He held out a paw, which Vex gladly accepted. He helped Vex up and let the wolf lean on him as he took him over to Jeremy.
"Th...Thanks Brad."
"No problem, now what are we going to do about Jeremy?"
"Go downstairs, get my bed sheets."
Brad nodded and he ran quickly downstairs, reemerging after a couple of seconds. He lifted Jeremy up after handing the sheets to Vex. Vex stood up, folded the bed sheets some, and wrapped them around Jeremy's wounded waist, stopping the flow of blood coming out of his side.
"Let's get him back home, his parents will know exactly what to do." Brad said.
"Agreed."
Brad carried Jeremy out of the house, leaving Vex sitting there for a moment. Vex limped over to his unconscious uncle. "Looks like you got what you deserved asshole." Vex towered over his uncle for a moment, and spat right in his face, and kicked him in the side... which hurt Vex pretty bad even though he was the one doing the kicking. The canine limped out of the house, and joined Brad in his car, who had laid Jeremy down in the backseat.
Brad drove silently to Jeremy's house, taking the fox inside as Vex waited out in the car, staring out of his window lost in his thoughts. Vex was taking in everything that had just happened. He had been trapped in his basement, Jeremy had been beaten to a pulp along with his uncle Danny, which he really didn't care much about, and Al had seemed to vanish. "Where will I go? I can't go home... not after that, I'd be killed for sure. I need to find a place to stay, and I'll have to get some way of income, I'm broke myself. Would I be living off the streets? Who would want me to live with them, an emotionally depressed gay wolf? Maybe I could move in with Jeremy... or Brad. But most importantly, Al had left him, all alone... how did he know he wasn't in on it? Could he and his uncle be working together? What's wrong with me, Al would never do something like that... I hope..."
Tears began to stroll down the wolf's cheek. He banged his head against the window, "Why does everything happen to me!" His ears perked up, hearing the sound of a door close... probably Jeremy's garage door. He saw his parent's backing up out of the driveway, passing Vex who was in Brad's car, parked on the side of the street. Brad walked over to the car and got in the driver seat.
"They're taking him to the hospital. Hopefully he won't be hurt for too long, he took a real beating."
"That bites..."
"Yeah..."
Both furs stared out of the front windshield, gazing into what was now night.
"Thanks for, y'know... saving me."
"It was nothing." Brad said, knowing what he had done was down right incredible.
"You don't have to be modest, you saved both our lives and you know it. If you hadn't of come Jeremy would be dead right now, and I most likely would have been next."
Brad rubbed the back of his head, and gave the wolf a gentle smile.
"I'm just glad you're alright."
"Yeah, I am too. Say... Brad?"
"Yeah?"
"Do you think I could move in with you maybe? I can't stay at my house anymore; it's just not safe..."
"Sure, I've got an apartment of my own, my parent's still supply me with money, so my situation is fine."
"Okay, cool." Vex said, feeling a bit of happiness fill him, "By the way, have you seen Al around? He just kind of vanished earlier today..."
"Who?"
"Never mind..."
"Ok, well, you want to go back to my place now?"
"Yeah, that'd be nice." Vex said, lying his head up against the window.
