Her heart pounded as she raced down the cold damp alleyway. She could hear them behind her screaming as they chased her through the streets, she couldn't get away from them and they were closing in on her. Desperation fueled her flight and fear kept her moving.

She turned the corner and shrieked as she crashed right into one of her pursuers. He quickly reached out and grasped the scruff of her neck and hollered for the others to hurry up. She squirmed and squealed trying to wiggle out of her capturers hold. She could hear the others boots pounding on the pavement and getting closer, she sagged in his hold giving up as they neared. A harsh wire attached to a poll was suddenly slipped onto her neck taking the place of the man's rough hands. They began tugging on the poll tightening the wire around her scruff and making it harder to pant frantically for breathe, she had no choice but to be drug along behind these harsh men. She was taken to a loud foul smelling truck with cages mounted to the back. Her head sagged in defeat as the one who caught her reached down and gathered him in her arms and tossed her violently into to cage, slamming the door shut behind him. She listened as their footsteps faded toward the front of the truck and the doors slammed as they settled into the cab. Then she began to sob, a somber sound, a combination of whines and whimpers that could be heard over the rush of wind as the truck sped her toward her death.

Chapter One

He walked into the grimy pound as he had every day for the last month. He had been searching for the right companion since his girlfriend had left and taken everything important to him with her nearly a year ago, she had taken his heart and his pride, his life had been shattered but he finally felt like he was strong enough to move on now. He had started a new job, had got a new house and had even started going out with his friends. Life was improving but he needed something else to be complete, which is why he was here. He strolled towards the front desk where a blonde-bimboish girl sat with her nose buried deep into the latest fashion magazine, ignoring the world around her. "Hey Roxie," Torben called as he strolled toward her. She perked up as she looked up from her magazine and her eyes fell on Torben. "Oh hi sweetie, you here for another peek at the mutts?" she chimed in her sing-song voice. Torben frowned at her and his eyes grew sad. Roxie was a beautiful girl but in the month he had been coming here he had found she was so ugly on the inside, shallow and petty, like his ex.

"Yes Roxie that's why I'm here. So is Jim in the back or do I need to wait for him to get back from his rounds?"

"No you can go on back, Jim's back there somewhere," she pouted, turning back to her magazine and ignoring him once again.

Torben sighed and headed toward the large double stainless steel doors that separated the front lobby from the dog runs in the back. He despised the way the animals were caged up inside on the hard concrete floor, not able to run and be loved. He had forced himself to leave the first time he came without taking home the saddest dog in the kennels, he had to find the right companion he kept telling himself as he walked home, but even knowing he couldn't save them all he had not slept that night. He had come back though, everyday to help out and to search for the right pet.

He walked through the hallway, dog runs on both sides, some were empty and others held forsaken pets that were stray or had been given up by thoughtless owners. He had seen all these dogs before though and none seemed to be interested in him. He passed the labs, terriers, mutts, purebreds, here it didn't matter they were still all alone. He passed the runs, eyes skimming for a new addition that might be what he was looking for, but as he reached the end of the hall his heart sank, once again he hadn't found what he wanted. "Jim," he called, hearing a muffled answer in the back room where the "unadoptable" animals were kept, he headed towards the door that led to that wing of the pound. He opened the door and stepped through where he was met with a barrage of barks and growls. He saw Jim at the end of the hallway in front of the very back cage. "Hey Jim, how's the job going today?" he asked trying to make polite conversation. Jim was a scruffy man with a short temper and a wicked sense of humor. Torben had not liked the man at first assuming that the way he joked about gassing dogs meant he enjoyed it, but the more he talked to Jim he began to understand that Jim did it as a way of coping with his job.

"Not so good," he rubbed his scruffy chin as he spoke, "got this little beauty here I've been tasked with gassing today, but for some reason I just can't seem to be able to do it."

"Oh really," Torben's interest was up now; he'd never known Jim to hesitate when his duty called. "What seems to be the problem Jim?" he asked as he made his way past the growling dangerous dogs jumping on their doors and running in their kennels. He reached him and turned to gaze into the kennel Jim had been staring in. He was taken aback but the dog that was inside. She was a beautiful red color, slim and dainty, but most shocking was her beautiful green, intelligent eyes that seemed to be begging him to understand her, but at the same time pleading with him to go away and leave her be. "Wow..Jim she is amazing. What's her name?"

"Well, she ain't got a name. She was a stray. The patrollers have been trying at her for around 3 years now; they finally got her about a week ago. Convinced boss to put her back her, said she was too feral. Personally I think they just want her dead for evading them for so long."

"So how's her personality?" Torben asked, unable to take his eyes off the dog he settled for just turning his head toward Jim.

"Well, now I haven't had any issue with her, she goes in her kennel well. She has only been here since last night so I haven't really got a feel from her yet. She just sits there quiet as a mouse, her head bowed like her spirits been broke."

As Jim spoke Torben made up his mind. "Jim, give her to me. You don't want to put her down and I think she is what I've been looking for. Please Jim," he spoke with as much pleading in his voice as he could. He had the strongest feeling this dog was exactly the one he'd been looking for. Jim pondered his offer, stroking his chin stubble and pursing his lips. Finally he reached out and handed the leash out to Torben.

"Take her boy; you take good care of her now. From the looks of her she is a full-blooded husky so she will probably be a handful for you."

"Thank you Jim," he called as Jim turned and walked away towards the lobby. Torben turned once again to face the small bundle of fur settled in the kennel, her ears where down and her eyes still pleading with his. He was suddenly filled with such joy knowing he had saved her from her fate, he had given her another chance and she in a way was giving him the same. "It's going to be ok girl," he called gently as he slowly opened the gate and stepped toward her. As if she understood she stood and stretched her neck towards him, allowing him to place the leash over her neck easily. As he turned and walked out of the kennels towards the exits she followed close beside, ignoring all the dogs hitting their gates trying to get at her. She silently followed him out of the runs and out of the pound and walked into her new life.

Chapter Two

Aneko followed beside her new owner as he walked down the cold sidewalks and towards some unknown destination. She plotted her escape as continued their journey but every time she prepared to gather her strength and bolt away a nagging desire to stay and see how life as a pet would be, "Besides," she thought to herself, "my new owner seems nice, and I owe him for breaking me out of that cage." She was startled out of her thoughts as her companion came to a stop.

"Here we are pup. This is your new home." She cocked her head at him, confused at how he spoke to her like she could understand, every other human she'd ever been around how treated her like a dumb animal even though she could see more of them than most of their own kind could. He gave her a moment to look up at the beautiful two story stone house that stood before them. A black iron gate separated them from continuing up the sidewalk and into the home. As soon as she'd had a quick glance around the fenced in bushes and trees that dotted throughout the yard, he began to move towards the gate, pausing only to open it and to shut it once they were inside. He strolled up the three stairs that led to a small landing and blocked her view with his legs as he opened up the door, then he stepped aside letting her see into his home. Aneko paused and sniffed, it smelled...safe, something she was not used to. She hesitantly entered the home, scanning over the dark wood furniture and cream colored rugs that were scattered throughout the entryway. She felt him drop the leash and shut the door behind her. For a moment her heart began to pound knowing that she was trapped, but she took a series of deep breathes and steadied herself.

She continued to trout through the house, exploring every room and noting windows she could reach to escape through, paying close attention to the glass sliding doors in the kitchen that led into the back yard. Knowing she could get out if she had to gave her small comfort, also she had relaxed when she realized her human had let her explore without standing over her shoulder, instead he had headed to the kitchen where she heard sounds of glasses clinking and the smell of food being prepared. She steadied herself once again and headed toward the kitchen to watch her human and learn more about him.

She sat down at the edge of the tile floor and watched as he turned to face her. "There you are pup, did you have yourself a nice look around the house?" he inquired. "Well here is your food, and here is your water." He pointed out the bowls as he sat them on the floor. She didn't want to accept food from him, that implied trust and she knew she could never trust a man, but she couldn't deny her stomach was tight with hunger. "Go on pup, I know you're hungry so eat," he turned back to the stove were he began to cook his own dinner and giving her privacy to eat hers. She stepped towards the bowl watching him the entire time, waiting for him to strike out and hurt her like all the others had, but he ignored her completely, giving her comfort. She glared at the kibble in her bowl and let a sigh, she would have begged for some real food about now but she gulped down the tasteless kibble anyways and backed away from the man at the stove. She settled down on the cool tile, laying her head on her paws at starting to drift away, the last thing she felt before finally drifting off was soft hands rubbing through her soft fur.

Chapter Three

She was startled awake by the sounds of his footsteps coming toward the kitchen. Aneko pushed herself up until she was sitting, just in time as the human turned the corner and gazed at her. "Well good morning sleepy pup, you know your bed would be softer than the floor but suit yourself." She watched as he turned away and began ruffling through the fridge, startled by the sudden feelings she was hit with, the desire to snap back at him with a witty remark, to talk to him and share conversation with this man. Reality slapped her then; she'd not spoke for nearly three years she wasn't even sure if she could still form the words she needed, and to speak with him she'd need to change into who she really was and that thought scared her to the bone.

She watched him sit at the counter and begin to drink his orange juice, completely unaware of the battle of feelings that she was experiencing as she looked at him. Finally he returned her gaze and smiled at her, giving her unexpected shivers. "So lil girl today it's just me and you here getting to know one another and I'm going to give you your name." She let out a huff that was her laugh, she had a name but curious to see what he would come up with she decided to let him stumble over names.

She'd spent the day following him from room to room and watching him, trying to sort out the storm inside herself. They'd finally made their way into the living room and he was settled on the couch flipping through channels and ignoring her like he had most of the day, only giving her attention long enough to throw out a useless name. At first his ignoring her had suited her just fine but now she wanted to force him to acknowledge her presence, so she strolled toward him and leapt gently onto the couch and settled in beside him, laying her head hesitantly on his leg and breathing in his pleasant, woody scent. He comforted her in a strange way now and as the night wore on she felt herself wanting to know what his touch would feel like and wishing he would reach out and touch her. She was getting drowsy though and she knew it was getting late and he still hadn't even acknowledged she was beside him.

After waiting a few more minutes she gave up and lifted herself off the couch, as she sat up she suddenly felt his hand on her head, afraid that if she moved he would stop she sat completely still as he stroked up and down her neck causing her skin to shiver and crave more in a way she'd never felt before. Her eyes closed as she drifted on the relaxing wave that his hands washed over her.

She felt a tingle in her paws suddenly and felt panic rise as she recognized what was happening to her; she flew off the couch and rushed towards the back guest room she'd explored the day before. The tingling feeling had spread up her paws and was working its way down her spine and spreading up towards her head as she dove under the bed. She could hear her human's footsteps as he followed into the room searching for her. The feeling had spread all over her by the time he entered the room, she had no choice but to give in and let her transformation happen..

Moments later she opened her eyes just as she saw the bed skirt raise as her human peeked under the bed and their eyes met for a moment before he let the skirt fall back into place. Gathering her strength she pulled herself out from under the bed on the opposite side her owner stood on. She took a moment to balance herself, it had been so long since she had stood on two legs she had almost forgot what it felt like. She stood then, her back to her human, her tail swishing over her buttocks, her paw like hands holding her now holding her human tits from his view. She turned her round face to look at him. She saw the way his eyes looked over her swishing tail, her generous curves and the coating of light red fur that covered her entire body. She stood and watched him talk all of her in, waiting for his eyes to finally meet hers. Their eyes met and she worked her voice, trying to speak like she had learned to long ago. Finally she managed to tell him what she'd been wanting to all night.."I'm Aneko," she told him..
