The House on Rainbow Road - 01 - Mary
#3 of The House on Rainbow Road - 2011
Mary
"Members and hopefuls of Delta Omega Sorority, welcome to the Fredrick Estate on Rainbow Road!" A general cheer went up from the twenty-four college girls as the sorority leader, Haley, said her lines. "Some of you are already members looking for a boost in your status, and some of you sucked at rush week and are looking for a second chance! Ladies, this is your chance to score big!" Another cheer went up from the young women.
"Tonight is Devil's Night," said Mary, the chief organizer for Delta Omega, "and Mr. Fredrickson has been kind enough to lend us his family estate for the night." A polite round of applause resounded as Mary motioned toward the older gentleman in 1800s fashion with slicked back silver hair. He gave only the slightest nod at their acknowledgment. "As some of you might know, this whole block's supposed to be haunted, and the Fredrick estate is filled with enough ghost stories to make your head spin."
"Which brings us to the rules of tonight's challenge," Haley said as her eyes scanned slowly over the crowd.
"Throughout the night there will be a series of challenges," Mary told them. "Scary things which might make you do girly things like scream or cry. Each of you will start the night with a hundred points. Every time your fear gets the better of you, there will be a point deduction. Showing courage will gain you points. What we're looking for here are young women who show courage and leadership. These traits are crucial to success in the world today."
"If you want to be an officer in Delta Omega," Haley picked up, "you're going to need guts, spirit, and the will to see a challenge through. If you lose your cool, you lose points. If you wig-out and quit, then you're out and you might as well pack your bags."
"Anyone leaving the challenge before sunrise will be asked to leave Delta Omega," Mary told them in a professional tone. "Your cell-phones will not work out here so even if you want to leave you will have to hike off of the property and then follow the street for three miles before you can call for the party-bus to come and get you."
"There aren't any street lights out there," Haley reminded them, "so unless you plan on leaving as a group, I recommend you don't leave at all. Dinner's at seven. We'll ring the bell to call you back. In the mean time, start exploring. You might want to see the grounds before the sun sets."
"Remember," Mary spoke up, "we're guests here tonight, so good behavior, ladies. Don't break anything."
Another round of applause signaled the end of the speech, and the hopefuls began breaking off into their teams of three to explore the grounds. Mary watched as familiar faces mixed with new ones. The noise of chattering girls grew, then ebbed as the exploration phase began. She made her way through the room, speaking briefly to the young hopefuls before sending them on their way. Once the last group dispersed, she found Haley who was going over a list. "What do you think?"
"Hmm?" the Sorority leader asked, turning suddenly to face her.
"The group," Mary clarified, "what do you think?"
"Oh, they're fine."
"You don't like them." Mary had followed Haley around for two years and had learned to read her in ways no one else seemed to get. A twitch in her forehead moved her long black hair, telling her of a general disapproving of the group. A sparkle in her deep blue eyes told Mary that Haley was planning something devious, and that before the night was through, some of these girls would run away from the manor weeping hysterically.
"There's too many of them," Haley admitted as she sighed and put the list away. "I can't think of a better way to eliminate them."
"I can."
"Yes, but your ideas are boring, Mary," Haley said with a grin. "My way is much more fun."
"Should we get the first traps in order now or should we wait?"
"Hmm..." the dark haired beauty muttered, obviously lost in thought.
"Haley!"
"Hmm?"
"Do you want me to start the traps now or do you want me to wait?"
"Oh, wait until after dinner," Haley said with a devious smile. "The suspense will build up better that way and we can watch them get all creeped out.
