#2 of Division 42

Division 42, Ch. 2: Fight

I was sleeping soundly, dreaming of all the things that'll happen to me in the days to come. All of a sudden, the lights came on and immediately caused discomfort to me.

"Come on, Chris," I heard Zeta said, "Time to wake up."

"Five more minutes," I mumbled, hoping that she would take my advice.

To my dismay, no, no she didn't. I felt the covers go flying off and I tried to fight back, keeping the covers on me as long as I could to no avail.

"Fine, fine," I sighed, "I'm awake. Jeez!" I got up, or at least tried but I grabbed back to the bed by both Rena and DJ. I chuckled to myself, thinking that this is crazy.

That's when I realized that yesterday wasn't a dream. It all happened. I was the Caretaker for Division 42 and I got to take care of some of the most fantastic creatures that man has never known. That thought immediately put a smile on my face as I tried to untangle myself from those two.

I got breakfast and got ready for my first day of work. I was almost to the bedroom door when I heard shuffling at the bed. I turned and saw both of them beginning to wake up.

"Finally," I addressed the two, "I was beginning to wonder if I had to wake you myself. Anyways, come on. It's my first day of work and I don't wanna be late because of you two."

I opened the door and only got about two steps when someone tackled me from behind. I looked behind me and saw Rena holding me down on my back. She looked pleased at this but I looked a little annoyed.

"Rena, honey, could you let me up, please?" I asked nicely.

She turned me over and was now sitting on my chest. I stared up at her, positively stunned at her beauty. She put both hands on my chest and leaned down, so close to my face I could feel her breath.

"Can we just stay like this a little longer?" she asked. Her eyes pleaded to me to let her stay like this, but I was going to be late for my first day if she continued. With a heavy heart, I said, "Rena, we can't. I have a job to get to." Her face fell, looking so sad. Noting the sullen look on her face, I said, "Don't worry, when work is done and over with, you can do this for as long as you like when we get home."

She perked up at that and let me up. I was about to turn and head for the door to the facility when I felt a hand on my shoulder pull me back to those eyes. Rena soon pulled me into a kiss and wrapped her arms around my neck to hold me in place. After a few minutes, she came for air and said, "I'll hold you to it, then."

Chuckling to myself all the way, I reached the door and was back in the Hub, as I called it, and met the friendly faces of Crystal and Simon.

"Hey guys, what's up?" I asked.

"Nothing, just getting ready for a new day. Now," Crystal said, holding out a list, "this is what you need to do every day when you get up. First, you have to feed all the Pokémon and get them more suited to you. Then, meet all the people in the town, which will take a couple of days to do. Finally, categorize all of the items in the Hall of Items by whatever system you like, then provide a detail list to give to both of us-"

I interrupted, "You want me to do inventory?"

Crystal blinked, having been flustered that I interrupted her, "Yes, in summary we want you to take inventory today. It will take some time, but knowing you, you'll do a fine job. Now, if you'll excuse us, we need to get back to work."

"Oh, well, what exactly to you do?" I asked, genuinely curious.

"We take all of the new ideas that people come up with and make them reality to store later. Oh, before I forget, you also need to sort out our newest arrivals when you get the chance."

"Great, fantastic, I'll get right on that," I said, not looking forward to the hard work before me.

Crystal and Simon looked at each other for a few minutes, then sighed. "Listen," Crystal said, "I know that this won't be easy, but it's your duty as Caretaker to know exactly who and what you'll be looking after. Now, I have to get back to work. Also, take this earpiece, in case of an emergency." With that, she turned back to the computer while Simon walked out, back to the desert.

While putting in the earpiece, I asked Crystal, "Where is Simon going?"

"Who knows? He likes to keep to himself and I'm used to that," Crystal said, her eyes not leaving the computer as she typed out algorithms and complex equations into the computer that made my brain hurt just by looking at them.

I decided to go ahead and do the job before any more time passes. I reached the Pokémon door but, as I was about to open it, with Rena and DJ behind me, Zeta said, "Chris, before you go, I have something for you."

Perplexed as to what the gift was, I waited for Zeta to give it to me. What she produced was a simple silver band, a ring. I took it and put it on. Immediately, I felt good. I mean that usually in the morning I was groggy, cranky, tired and slouching until after a few hours I feel better. With this ring on, I felt, not just I had drank three cups of coffee, and I wasn't slouching, I felt taller, had more energy to do the things I needed to do today.

"Thanks, Zeta," I replied, happy at the prospect of something that will perk me up without the caffeine.

We walked back to the door that opened to the Pokémon room and was soon surrounded by Pokémon of every shape and size. When I finally got through the mob and went around to the feeding and watering areas, I was making my way back to the door when I heard something drop behind me. I turned and saw something that made me look in awe.

Sure, I was used to ordinary Pokémon because they were common and were everywhere. What I was looking at made me wish I could capture this moment forever. Standing before me were a couple of legendary Pokémon of various colors, shapes and types. First, I saw the Pokémon standing in front of me. It was Mewtwo, and he was everything that I heard about, from stories to movies to the games. He was around my height, with a pale pink body and feline characteristics. He had a short snout and ear-like projections on the top of his head. He had what looked like a chest plate on his chest and had three fingers on each hand. His tail was purple and extended out from his body. He looked me up and down for a couple of seconds before he spoke.

"So, you're the new Caretaker, then?" A voice spoke, sounding strong and fierce.

"Who said that?" I asked, looking around, trying to find the voice.

"Right in front of ya."

I turned to the Mewtwo, who was smiling at me and said, "Wait... telepathy, right?"

"Yep, now to introduce the others of the welcoming committee. GUYS!" he yelled the last part out to the forest surrounding us.

Soon, more Pokémon were coming out of hiding. I saw Mew, her pink fur shining in the sun, floating towards us cautiously at first, but immediately warmed up when she saw no danger and zoomed around my head, making me dizzy. I then saw the two Eon Pokémon, Latios, his white and blue feathers reminding me of Togepi, and Latias, also having the same pattern as her older brother but with red instead of blue, both floating to the middle of the clearing in which we were all standing in. I then felt a strange chill along my spine and looked down, seeing my shadow stretch out and something emerging from the inky darkness. I backed away to give it room. As it was taking shape, I noticed the red collar, the white hair and the glaring blue eye, but the rest of him was black, like the inky, black shadows that he phased from. He looked at me for what seemed like an eternity, he then surprised me by raising a hand to offer a friendly shake. I took it and felt my whole body shaking in fear, but from what I had no idea. He let go and phased back into my shadow.

"Well, that was certainly a hell of an experience," I said, not knowing what to say about what just happened.

"Aww, he likes you," said the Mew, now on my shoulders and wrapping her tail around my neck.

"Wait, who?"

"Darkrai, the Pitch-Black Pokémon. He is said to bring bad dreams and fear to those that are around him."

"Really?"

"Yeah," said Mewtwo, "He never was this friendly to the other Caretaker before. You must have done something to make him act like this. Anyway, we just want to welcome you to the position of Caretaker and hope to see you excel at it."

"Thanks," I said. It was weird enough that Pokémon were talking to me. Now they were really looking forward to see what I can do. Talk about pressure.

I was about to introduce Rena and DJ, but there was the sound of a muffled explosion and a rumbling that shook the entire room, causing me to lose balance and fall. I was getting up when I heard Crystal coming in from the earpiece, clearly shaken by the events that happened.

"Chris, come quick. Some people are spilling through the gate and they are not friendly."

I quickly ran, looking back to see Rena and DJ keeping pace with me and surprised to see the Pokémon welcoming committee also running, or floating, behind me.

"Why are you guys coming?"

Mew was still on my shoulder and said, "We are with you, always."

After hearing her say that, I didn't question them any further. They were loyal to me and will fight for me, though I don't know why I don't care.

We made it to the door, but Zeta didn't acknowledge us being there.

"Zeta, open up. It's an emergency."

Nothing came back. I decided to open the door, with or without Zeta's knowledge, knowing that there was danger or something far worse on the other side.

I tried with all my might, but it wouldn't budge. I felt a paw on my shoulder, and DJ said, "Allow me."

I stepped aside, and watched with fascination what DJ could do.

He built up his aura and focused it into one hand. It made into a ball the size of a baseball and he chucked it at the door. When it made contact, the door caved in before exploding, sending shrapnel all over the place.

After brushing myself off, I asked, "What the hell was that?"

DJ smiled up at me and said, "Aura sphere, our strongest attack."

I grinned and raced through the hole that DJ made, everyone following behind me.

As DJ used his Aura Sphere on the other door and after the dust settled, the scene that played out for me was total chaos.

All around me, I saw teams of bad guys destroying everything in their path. They were trashing the Hub, destroying everything that they saw as important. Some were going in and out of the door leading into the town, taking everything deemed valuable and some even taking hostages. I ran over and punched a dude carrying out a bound cheetah and grabbed the dude and put him against the wall.

"Who sent you?" I asked, using every ounce of anger I had to make the words and menacing as possible.

"Wouldn't you like to know," said the smartass, so I punched him in the face and gut then kicked his balls.

"Tell me or you'll experience something even more horrible than that."

"Look," the man wheezed out, "I don't know. I'm just a grunt following orders."

"Whose orders?"

"Someone named.... I don't know."

"Tell me!" I yelled, pulling a fist back.

"Look, all I know of him is that he's rich and hired us to do this. You'll have to ask someone else."

I dropped him, then kicked his stomach for good measure. I looked back at my friends and said, "Knock 'em out. Take them alive."

They nodded and went to work. Rena used her Diamond Storm attack on a group of grunts trying to hold down a bucking horse, knocking them out but leaving the horse unharmed. DJ used a combination of a Force Palm and an Aura Sphere to take out one of the bigger guys. The legendary Pokémon that followed me tried to use low level attacks to only knock out the people trashing the place. Mewtwo using Physic to levitate people before dropping them while Mew was confusing others by flying around and making them dizzy. Latios and Latias were tag teaming, bringing down a couple of guys before switching to conserve energy. I looked over and saw Darkrai, who apparently followed me and used an attack that caused people to sleep, but I noticed some of them shivering and mumbling with scared looks on their faces.

At this point, someone yelled, "We're getting wasted. What do we do?"

A voice, so full of violence and malice, answered, "Bring out the big toys."

That's when I heard the heavy footsteps of something big coming this way. I prepared myself for whatever came but was filled with fear at what I saw.

Two Hunters, the same Hunters from Halo, came in. Slowly they made their way over to us and charged their cannons.

The only thought that crossed my mind before they fired was Crap!

Before they fired their devastating cannons, everyone stood in front of me and tried to protect me from the line of fire. When the Hunters fired, Mew and Mewtwo used Protect and with both of their Protects up, the plasma that fired from the cannons deflected and left scorched marks on the floor, walls, and ceiling. I looked around me and saw that everyone was okay, even the horse and cheetah that we saved earlier. I looked behind me and saw the Hall of Items that hasn't been ransacked by the grunts. I had an idea and planned to follow through.

"Guys, keep them occupied. Go for their weak spots in the back and don't get hit by the plasma. I'm going for something in the Hall of Items. Keep me covered."

They turned to look at me and nodded.

"At my signal, drop Protect and disperse. Keep them confused and moving. Ready? . . . Now!"

I ran, the Protect dropped and everyone went in different directions. I didn't look back, focusing on getting to the hall and getting the only thing that could protect me and save them from those Hunters.

When I was inside, I locked the door behind me and looked for the weapon. After a few minutes of running and searching did I find it.

"Don't worry guys, help is on the way," I said to myself, "This is gonna be epic!"

Mew and Mewtwo were flying around and throwing Shadow Balls, causing confusion between the two Hunters. Soon, DJ came behind one and struck him with an Aura Sphere, spilling orange blood across the floor. This enraged the Hunter that was attacked and made to strike the enemy down, crushing him. When he stuck down his shield, he heard the resounding crunch of ground, but not the sound of crushing bones. He missed.

Mew put up a Sandstorm, trapping the Hunters inside and inflicting damage on them. Not being able to see, they were more vulnerable to attacks. After a few minutes of endless fighting, the Pokémon were beginning to show signs of fatigue, while the Hunters were still standing, more enraged than before.

They charged their cannons and fired, sending two beams of hot plasma at the Pokémon. While Mew and Mewtwo were okay from Protect, the others jumped and dodged away from the plasma. Soon, they stopped and heard the sound of a door opening and all turned to look and see Chris, walking out with the Spartan armor that he saw the day before, carrying a Rocket Launcher and an Energy Sword.

He looked at the Hunters, his face hidden by the helmet he was wearing, and said, "Let's dance."

***

I jumped away from the door and threw two grenades, exploding in front of them, shielding themselves from the blast. Using this distraction, I ran behind one and fired the Rocket Launcher twice, both hit the exposed flesh in the back. The Hunter screamed in pain and turned to attack me, but I was long gone, reloading for the next attack.

"Guys, a little help," I yelled, noticing all of the Pokémon still standing there, looking at me. They snapped out of their stupor and starting fighting back in full force.

We soon was working together on defeating the Hunters, me shooting and stabbing and everyone else providing support. I saw that the Hunters were nearing the end and put away the Rocket Launcher. Running behind them, I pulled out my Energy Sword and stabbed deep into the first Hunter and slashed out, causing his blood to spill out and pool around his dead body. I then focused on the other Hunter, dodging a lunge from him and spun around to his back and stabbed him with enough force to break through his front armor. I left it in there, the Hunter trashing about before he laid still, not getting up.

I took off my helmet and stared at the Pokémon, breaking into a grin before running to go and hug them all, barely surviving this ordeal. I looked around and saw that everyone, except the ones unconscious, retreated, using the Hunters as a distraction.

But I didn't care. I just beat two real life Hunters with a team of Pokémon at my side. I looked around at their faces, filling with relief and happiness. I looked and saw DJ, smiling up at me and jumping for joy at our victory. I looked around for Rena, to share our success together, but I noticed that I didn't see the signs of yellow fur anywhere. I ran around, concern on my face. Where was she? Was she hiding from the Hunters? I looked everywhere in the Hub, but saw no trace of her anywhere. I then noticed a piece of paper on the floor. Curious, I picked it up and a message was written on it. As I read, the note filled me with regret, anger, and sadness. I fell to my knees, hoping that this wasn't true.

DJ, seeing me on the ground, came up to me with a smile on his face, "Chris, why are you on the ground? We just beat those two monsters and survived with no casualties. What's wrong?"

I held up the note to him and he read out loud, "We have her. Don't try to find us or..." not reading the rest. He, too, was shocked at the turn of events and fell to his knees, tears brimming in his eyes.

Everyone else came around us concerned. Mew asked, "What's wrong?"

DJ looked up to them, tears flowing freely now and yelled, "She's gone! My friend, Rena, is gone!"

Everyone else was stunned, the news hitting them like a ton of bricks. Mewtwo asked, "Where have they taken her?"

DJ answered, "Back to their headquarters."

"Well, let's go. We're wasting time sitting and moping about."

"No," I answered.

Everyone was shocked at my answer. They expected me to immediately get a team together and go after them. But they just saw me sitting there, not doing a thing.

"Why not?," Mew countered, "Let's go find her and bring her back. She's one of us."

"No, we can't," I said, "if we do, then..." I couldn't bring myself to say it.

"Then what?" Mewtwo asked.

"She dies."

I let that sink in before getting up to go to my room. No one followed me, no one said a word. I went to my bed, Spartan armor still on, crashed onto the bed, and cried out. I cried into the night, missing my Rena dearly, wishing for this not to happen.

"Rena..." I sobbed out, "I'm sorry for this happening to you... I... I..."

I wanted to go and save her, not caring about myself, only her. But that note, the power behind what those words said, chilled me to the bone.

_ And this day started out so well..._

Division 42, Ch. 1: Caretaker

Division 42, Ch. 1: Caretaker The sun broke through the window, passing through the curtains and hitting my face, telling me to wake up. I groaned, getting up and immediately regretted my decision. I will admit that I'm not a morning person. I hate...
