Chapter One: The Assassin
To be an assassin you must be fast. You must be silent. And most of all you must be deadly. I have all these qualities, plus one more important but not required skill, I feel no emotions. A curse laid on me early on in my life when I was an infant. This target is simple. A dragoness, I ask not the motive behind the job so all I know is where she will be and the money I get paid. So this leads me to where I am now. Sitting in a tree wait for the dragoness to walk by like she had every other day. I had been watching her, for a week now, and I know where she goes daily. I know from what I have seen and what I know about all dragons that I cannot overpower her, so I have to do as I always do. Kill her before she knows what is happening. If I screw up it could mean my life. Because a small wolf like myself stand no chance with someone of her size and strength.
I looked up the path and saw her coming. She was hard to miss in the morning light. He green scales shinning in the sunlight. I drew my dagger, blade sharpened so that it would easily cut through the scales of the dragon. She got close, close enough to where I could hear the tune she was humming, I didn't know the tune but I could hear it. She was right in front of me, so I started to move. I crept down out of the tree without making a sound. I had a my dagger ready to strike, when out of nowhere a fox bursts through the foliage and rams into me knocking me over and causing him to trip out onto the path, and right into the dragoness.
"What the hell?" The dragoness yelled.
"Sorry, sorry." The fox said he tried to get up but feel back over.
"What's the rush?" She asked him.
"Their-their after me!" He said.
Just as he said that a group of royal guards, from the capital city, burst through the foliage where the fox had came through, ran right by me and out onto the path. Damn it I thought to myself they messed up the whole damn plan. Maybe I can kill her in all the fighting.
"Hand him over miss." One of the guards commanded.
"And what has he done?" The dragoness asked.
"He stole from our caravan." The guard said.
"Oh, so what you're going to throw him away for a few years in prison? I know how you guards are." She said, nearly yelling the words.
"Well, not if he gives back what he stole and pays the fine for it." The guard said.
"Oh, please. You think he has any gold on him if he has to steal to get by?" She asked.
"Well....uh..." The guard stumbled.
"I didn't think so." She said.
"That does not matter he is in this kingdom so he has to follow the law. And the law is if he steals he either pays the fine or goes to prison." The guard said.
"Well, I'm sorry but I will not let you do that." The dragoness said. "Now scram."
"Come on lady we are just doing our job." The other guard said.
"Too bad, get a new one." She told them.
"We don't know anything else." The guard replied.
"Well, guess what?" She asked.
"What?" The guard asked.
"You can't have him." She said.
"Come on lady just hand over the crim-" The guard started.
"Get lost." She snarled.
The dragoness made it clear that she was ready to fight, her claws were out and she was bearing her teeth. The two guards stood there, looked at each other, then turned and started to run, that's when they saw me, being dumb I sat there watching the whole thing instead of moving. And, I had the mark of an assassin. When I finished training, I was marked, they stuck a red hot coin to my cheek. So forever anyone who sees me knows what I am. And the royal guards are to kill any assassin they see, mostly it goes for the ones in the capital, but the law is to all royal guards.
"Assassin!" One of the guards yelled and drew his sword, as did the other one.
I grabbed my dagger and started to stand when a sword went through my arm, and another through my shoulder. They pulled their swords out and were about to strike again when the dragoness grabbed them. I fell to the ground, my blood soaking the earth. The dragoness lifted the two guards up and threw them into a tree, most likely knocking them out, or maybe even killing them. She looked down on me, and picked me up. She held me in her arms like someone would a new born baby.
"He's an assassin!" The fox yelled. "Why are you helping him?!"
"Because it is the right thing to do." The dragoness said. "Now come with me, you must be hungry,"
"Uh, ok." He said.
Everything got blurry, and my vision started to tunnel. I shook my head trying to clear it but it did not help. I looked up at the dragoness who was carrying me, she was strong, more so than I had thought she was. My vision tunneled more and all I could see was her face. Then everything went black. I could hear faint voices, something about a house, and food. Then I blacked out completely. I knew I had failed my mission, and seeing how she was most likely going to save me....I am still bound by the assassin's oath.
