The Woodland Visitor Ch 10: Allies Against Darkness
#11 of The Woodland Visitor
I have to apologize for the delay in getting this out. I also need to apologize for the shoddy work I did on it. Being in the military, duty comes first, then after the 28 hour days I've had to put in, if there is any time left (You do the math) I would work on the story. I want to thank you for your patients in waiting for this chapter. Again, I'm sorry it took so long.
You know the deal... all characters are copyright me... yadi...yadi...yadi... cannot be used without permission, and all that good bull.
The Woodland Visitor Pt 10
Allies Against Darkness
"Winter." Was all I could say before I felt someone else grab me and turn me around. Staring face to face with a ruggedly built muscular looking human I again gasped. "Grey?"
As I looked at the other two I realized that the entire Wolf Pack had assembled.
"What? How did you?"
Suddenly the group split and two figures walked up between them. When they were close enough for me to see I recognized them and my eyes went wide.
Major Denton and Steve looked at me. It was the Major who spoke. "When I found out what you were planning to do, I got word to the Wolf Pack and setup everything. Sienna helped with keeping you occupied while we formed our plans."
Just then another form pushed its way through the crowd. Tamanae was on me almost before I could recognize her. "Thank god you're ok." I just hugged her and gave a sigh of relief. "Sienna sent this for you." She said as she turned and kissed me. Then pulling back she smiled. "That and to wish you luck, She's waiting for you to return."
Major Denton saved me any further embarrassment by stepping in. "Well Dark Wolf, by unanimous decision of those assembled, we have decided that since this is your mission. You need to bring us up to speed as our leader."
"But I..."
Steve gripped my arm. "I did a favor for you, now you need to do us a favor and lead this mission."
I bowed my head and sighed. Looking up at those assembled I asked, "Who's all here?"
Grey Wolf Stepped up. "The Wolf Pack is present."
Steve stepped up beside him. "All members from mission recovery are present."
I smiled at him. "Mission 'Recovery'?"
Steve smiled as he looked down, then looking me right in the eyes he replied, "Well it doesn't sound as good as Wolf Pack, but it's something."
I just smiled shaking my head. "So including me we have fourteen present?"
"Fifteen, you are not... leaving me out of this one." Maj. Denton said.
"Alright then, fifteen it is." I replied as my mind started reworking my plan. "Wolf Pack, teams are the same. The rest of you, you worked well together the first time. Let's keep it that way."
Tamanae came over to me and leaning in close whispered, "I can't do it."
I looked at her and saw fear in her eyes. I reached up and placed my hand on her cheek and said, "Wait one second." I turned to the group. "Alright let everyone know what's going on. We'll rework my plan and assign everybody a mission in a minute." I looked around the group. "Where's Josh?"
Steve pointed down to the figure behind the Sniper rifle. Turning back I found Xelinia. "You and Josh will man the rifle and cover us. Everyone else, get with your partners."
I turned and led Tamanae away from the group. Turning to her I saw fear in her eyes. "What do you mean you can't do it?"
"I told them that I couldn't do it, but they insisted that I come." She replied looking down.
"Why can't you do it?"
"I... I just can't. I almost got you killed the last time. I don't want that to happen again."
I reached out and placed my hands on her cheeks, gently lifting her head up so her eyes met mine. "Remember what I said after you helped me rescue Sienna? I said if something like this ever happened again, you would be my first choice as a partner. I am going to stand by that decision. I want you to be my partner. I think we make a great team."
"But..."
"No, you are really good and you know how to handle yourself. You are also my friend. I stand by my choice."
I released her as she wrapped her arms around me. "I'll try."
I lifted her muzzle up and kissed her. When I pulled back I smiled, "That's all I ask."
We made our way back to the group and after putting our heads together we came up with a plan. Josh and Xelinia would stay up here and cover us from the hillside. Josh brought along his .50 cal so now there were two set up and ready. Major Denton would stay with them and cover their backs while the rest of us went down and entered the compound.
We would hit the compound from three sides. If everything went right, we would shake them up enough that we could get inside before they realize what happened.
Steve came over to me after the plans were set. "You know, you left in such a hurry that you forgot this." In his hand was my radio that I used when we rescued Sienna. "I also got four others for the Wolf Pack. As soon as you're ready we can start."
Slipping the headset on I turned to Tamanae, "Are you ready my dear?"
She smiled to me, "No."
"Good lets go then." I walked over to my pack and pulled out Tanya's assault rifle. A gasp came from behind me as Winter quickly stepped around to face me. "Please tell me..."
"I can't."
"I thought you said it was destroyed."
"No, I said it wouldn't be used again. I never said it was destroyed."
By this time the rest of the Wolf Pack had gathered around. I could tell by their faces that they recognized the rifle and were wondering about it.
"Look, she wants revenge and so do I." I looked down at the rifle. "This is the only way I can give it to her."
Winter gripped my shoulder. "Don't think this is over. When we get finished you have a lot of explaining to do."
I watched as the rest of the pack all nodded in agreement. Taking a deep breath, I said, "When we get back, I will explain everything to you. I just want this to be over." I looked down to the rifle and lightly caressed it as I whispered. "I just want you to rest in peace my love."
Major Denton came over to us. "I'm sorry to interrupt but we have four hours to get into position."
"Everyone knows what to do. Use the headsets to keep in contact. If anything goes wrong, don't be afraid to call for help. We're going to enter this as a team, and we're going to leave as a team. No one gets left behind." Looking over at the Wolf Pack I asked, "for the sake of this one mission, I ask that we all be known as the Wolf Pack."
Winter smiled, "we already agreed that for this mission, the Wolf Pack shall ride heavy."
I bowed my head and whispered, "This ones for you love." Then I looked up at the group. "Alright Wolf Pack we have a job to do."
With that I held my hand out to the center of the group. One by one more hands were placed on mine. When the last one was stuck in I looked at Winter and smiled.
"In through the gates of hell and back..." I slowly looked at Winter who swallowed nervously. Tanya always made the reply, but I was asking her to do it this time.
"Nothing will stop the Wolf Pack." She replied in a clear voice.
I slowly looked around the circle and said, "Now let's do this for Tanya."
"For Tanya." Was the reply from around the circle. Everyone paired off and secured their gear ready to move out. I walked through the group and watched as everyone geared up, a look of determination painted on their faces.
Turning I grabbed my pack from Tamanae, being careful not to dislodge the tube strapped to the side. Giving the signal we all melted into the predawn darkness.
"Team one in position." I called into the headset and listened as everyone checked in. Tamanae lay on the ground to my left. Duvole was on my right with Claire on the other side of him.
"Get ready." I called as I sat up and adjusted the rocket launcher on my shoulder as Duvole did the same. "Lock." I sighted on the front gate. "Away one, go." No sooner were the words out of my mouth when Duvole fired.
Three rockets sailed out of the tree line surrounding the complex. Each rocket finding and eliminating a single guard tower with perfect accuracy.
"Away two." Three more rockets sailed out of the wood line impacting on the three gates destroying them and leaving a gaping hole where they stood. As I dropped the rocket launcher and picked up Tanya's assault rifle, I heard the distinctive pop, pop, pop as Josh and Xelinia cleared the remaining towers of their occupants.
Duvole and I made our way to what was left of the gate while our partners covered us. We started clearing the courtyard while our partners moved up. Using the destroyed gate as cover I moved up and again renewed my firing.
"Team one, contact. Five hiding behind crates, your nine o'clock, Range fifty."
It took me less than one second to find the crates Josh was talking about. I pulled out a grenade and threw it. Cursing as it sailed over the target and hit the roof of the building behind them. Reaching for another, I watched the first one roll down and just clear the edge of the roof when it exploded eight feet above where they were hiding. Luck was smiling on me.
"This is team three, we're pinned down." I heard Grey Wolf call out.
"Team three. I can't get a clear shot. They're behind too much cover." Josh called back.
"This is team one. Stay down, we're on our way." I called as I turned and made my way along the wall with Duvole right behind me. I jumped as a door flew open right in front of me and two soldiers ran out. Before I could recover I heard two pops and watched them fall.
Turning back I saw Tamanae lower her rifle and move forward. I continued down to the end of the building and slowly peeked around the corner. Half way down the building was a ring of sandbags that was about chest height. Inside the ring sat two machine guns.
Signaling to my team to cover me, I slowly crawled down and hunched just outside the ring. I reached into my pocket to get another grenade and found it was empty. I patted my other pockets and found they were empty too. What the hell, I know I had more than one on me. I frantically searched for another and came up empty.
The only thing I could do was to use the rifle. I grabbed it and was just about to stand up when I caught sight of movement from my team. Duvole had a grenade in his hand and was motioning for me to catch it. It only took a second to realize that if he threw it, I would have to catch it, pull the pin and toss it in. That would give them plenty of time to shoot back before it went off.
I motioned for him to wait a second while I did a quick calculation. I only had one chance to do this. I hoped that I wouldn't screw it up. Taking a deep breath I motioned for him to pull the pin.
His eyes grew wide when he figured that I wanted him to throw it in. He shook his head, refusing to do it. I watched Tamanae grab his arm and whisper something to him. His shoulders sagged and he slowly nodded. He got into position to throw it when I motioned for him to stop.
With hand signals, I told him what I wanted him to do. His eyes grew wide and he shook his head, refusing to do it. I heard Diane call him over the two-way and watched him turn towards her.
"Do it, he knows what he's doing." I heard her say.
"But what if I..." I could hear the fear in his voice as he was cut off by Diane.
"It's the only way. You know it. Just trust him and do it."
"I can't..."
Diane grabbed the grenade and in one fluid motion pulled the pin and threw it. I watched it sail across the gap between us and land with perfect precision right into my hands. I whipped my hands up and over my head, slamming it into the machine gun nest. My legs gave out from under me as I dove to cover up. Before I could, the grenade went off blowing the top layers of sand bags down on me slamming me into the ground.
A minute later I slowly rose to my knees and shook myself off. Feeling a hand on my arm I looked up to see Tamanae staring at me with a look of fear and worry in her eyes. I smiled and picked up Tanya's rifle. As I stood up, she wrapped her arms around me and whispered, "I was so scared."
I hugged her back then turned to the nest and saw that several layers of sandbags were gone and the wall was about ready to fall. At my feet lay a twisted piece of metal that I recognized as a mortar tube.
The damage caused to the nest was greater than a grenade could ever have done. I must have slammed it next to the ammunition for the mortar and set that off. My legs suddenly gave out on me and I fell to my knees.
Diane came up to me and began checking me over for injuries thinking I was hurt. "Are you Ok? Did you get hit?"
I sat there in shock for a minute before I recovered enough to shake my head. "No, I'm alright, just a little stunned."
"Good, get up then. We have a mission to finish." Diane replied as she turned to scan the compound.
To emphasize her point, the dirt got kicked up right in front of her. I heard "oh shit!" over the two ways as Diane jumped back. I also heard the reassuring 'pop, pop' from the fifty's on the hill and the incoming stopped. "Tango clear." Josh's voice reported over the two-way.
I stood up and ran across the clearing, stopping beside the doorway of our assigned building. As I scanned the area, I watched the rest of my team cross and take up positions beside me.
"Shit... Team one. There's a T-721 bearing down on your position. I will be clear in ten seconds." Josh screamed over the radio. "Bearing two seventy range three hundred meters."
I watched as the soviet designed tank rounded a building down the aisle from us. I instantly jumped into action, shoving my team back the way we came as I watched the main gun turn our way.
I had just made it around the corner when the sand bags exploded with the impact of the tanks round. We continued to run down the edge of the building and rounded the last corner only to come face to face with the 125mm barrel of the T-72.
You know when they say that your life passes before your eyes? Well, mine wasn't pretty. The only thought I had was who will tell Sienna.
Tamanae grabbed my elbow and drug me around behind it. That's when I saw Steve grinning at me.
"Need Help?" He asked.
"What are you trying to do? Give me a heart attack?" I said as I sunk to my knees.
"You mean you actually have a heart?" He grinned back at me.
We all looked up at the same time as we heard the unmistakable sound of a tank rolling our way. Steve grabbed my arm. "Let's get back and let them do their job."
I led my team around the other side of the building. I took us back towards our objective. We needed to clear our building and get out quick before any more surprises happened to show up.
Hitting the door of our objective I looked back and saw only the smoking wreck of the T-72 with the turret setting about fifty feet away. Duvole stepped up and kicked in the door and quickly stepped sideways as I scanned the hallway for movement.
"Clear" I called and watched my team roll inside the door. We cleared all but the room that my objective was thought to be held up in.
Stepping up, I kicked the door in and entered with my weapon ready. That's when I saw him. He was setting in a chair across the room and had a look of fear on his face. It was all I could do not to pull the trigger on him right then and there.
Duvole and Tamanae stepped around me and grabbed him by the arms holding him still. I walked over and stood in front of him. My hands kept clenching and unclenching Tanya's rifle as I fought to control the rage that burned inside of me. The memory of that day played out in my mind as I looked into his eyes. Slowly I looked around the room and saw a close representation of that room he held us in so many years ago. I found the table where Tanya had been tied up to and brutally murdered on. I could almost see her limp body laying there begging for death.
Turning back I punched him in the side of the head and watched as his limp form hung between his two captors. I motioned for them to put him on the table and watched as they drug him over.
When he was secured I looked at my prisoner and addressed the team. "Get out. Help them clear the compound. Under no circumstances are you to come back in. I'll meet you outside when I'm done."
"But..." was all Tamanae could get out before she saw the look in my eyes as I turned on her.
Slowly I raised my rifle and turned towards them. "Get out, NOW!"
As I watched them leave I heard Tanya's voice in my head. "They didn't deserve that."
"I don't care." I thought as I scanned the room and then set about my work. Soon I had four long chains attached to my former captor and was setting beside him waiting for him to wake up.
Five minutes later I heard him groan as he came around. I stood up and looked down at him as he opened his eyes.
"Hello general, do you remember me?" I asked him. He just stared at me. "I didn't think so, although I remember you. I see you every night in my nightmares. I see you raping and torturing my partner until she lay there dead on this table. I see you looking over at me grinning while you leaned over her dead body. I hear your words again and again. 'Well Black Wolf, she was good while she lasted.' You said."
His eyes immediately grew in recognition as he stared at me
"Yes general, I see that you now remember me. I have waited so long for this moment."
"Wha...what are you going to do?" He asked with the unmistakable sound of fear in his voice.
"I've decided that I'm not going to kill you as you did the Winter Wolf."
I saw him relax just a little before I continued. "No, I've decided that your death shall be more painful than hers was."
"I...I was just..." He said as the fear returned to his face.
I cut him off. "Enjoying your work? Now I shall enjoy mine. Justice has finally been given to me and I shall enjoy every second of it. Don't get me wrong, I don't like killing, but it's my job and once you're dead this mission will be finally completed. I can finally lay my demons to rest. If you would have left us well enough alone, it would have been one painless shot and you would have been dead."
I circled him checking the chains I had connected to him, making sure they were secure. "But you didn't, and now it will be very painful for you."
"Please, I'll give you anything you want."
I grabbed him by the neck. "Will you give me back Tanya? No? How about taking away all the pain I felt from losing her? How about all the nightmares I've had from watching you torture her? You can't do that, can you? You see general, there is nothing that you can give me. There is nothing I want from you except revenge."
"I've got money, drugs, weapons... whatever you want. I can get it."
"No general, you can't. I'll take my leave now. This chapter of my life is over. It's time to close the book and start new. Goodbye general."
"You can't leave me here to die, you bastard."
I turned when I reached the door. "No general, I'm not going to leave you to starve." I lifted the rifle up and aimed it at his head. "You see, this was Tanya's rifle. I'm going to leave it to her to extract revenge."
At the last second I moved the barrel and shot a piece of steel that sat on the other side of the room. It fell and landed perfectly sending power to several motors in the room. When I heard the hum of the motors start, I turned and slowly walked out of the room to the clink of the chains very slowly being moved.
Outside, everyone had gathered around the door waiting for me to come out. With my head down I emerged and just stood there.
Tamanae came over and placed her hand on my shoulder. "Are you Ok?" She asked quietly.
"I haven't been Ok since she died."
"I heard the shot. Does that mean it's over?"
At that moment an inhuman scream came from inside. It lasted for a couple of minutes as I stood there with my head down. When the scream died down I looked up and with tears running down my face I said, "It is now."
Josh came running up to us. "What was that scream?"
I just looked at him. "Closure." Was the only thing I said.
Major Denton stepped up. "Transport is on its way. It'll be here in about twenty minutes." He said.
I don't remember climbing onto the chopper or the ride home. The only thing I could see was Tanya's face. It had a peaceful look on it and for the first time in a long time there was a smile on it.
