Taste of Fire: Bad to Worse
#6 of Taste of Fire
Qagan sat silently next to the campfire and listened. He listened for any noise to warn him of potential threats or hostilities. Yet the only sound was the crackling of the fire and Teya's smooth breaths. Qagan relaxed a little and put a piece of wood on the fire. Qagan looked to the stars and let out a sigh. The moon started to rise to the east and its light kissed the top of the trees. "Simply beautiful." Qagan whispered to himself. He looked over to Teya; she was lying on her side with her back to him and her life-flame dancing with the campfire in the night breeze.
He couldn't take his eyes off her. "You know better, you can't have her." He thought to himself. "You've tried to couple before and it got you nothing. She's of a proud people, strong and iron willed." Qagan sighed and managed to take his eyes off her and look back to the fire. "Am I not those things? Can I not be Strong?" He asked himself. "I am who I make myself. I could be the one she wants." His heart beat slightly faster at this thought. "You are different types. She has the capacity of fiery passion and undying loyalty. You have been conditioned to feel nothing and respond in cold disposition." Qagan looked to the ground and shook his head. "Can I change?" he asked himself quietly. This was a question he couldn't answer. He smiled to himself, seems hope wasn't entirely out of reach. "All this is going to make me soft." He chuckled to himself. He rubbed his face with his paw and rolled his eyes. "It's going to be a long night."
Halfway through the night Qagan was still awake. His eyes showed no signs of weariness, he remained watchful and ears listening for any sound. The night was still and quiet with only a small breeze breaking the stillness. Teya still slept soundly while the fire crackled quietly. Qagan sat subject to his thoughts; the state of the crater dominated his mind tonight. He didn't know what he would be walking in to. Teya would likely not be prepared for any of the possibilities that could have taken place since she left. "Yet she still goes on." He whispered to himself.
He prodded the fire with a stick. Qagan's ears perked up and he looked around quickly as he stood up, his tail twitched with alarm. He stood entirely still and listened intently to the surrounding forest. Silence fell onto his ears for several seconds but he could feel multiple presences surrounding him and watching the camp. A twig snapped and Qagan looked in its direction, he saw a shadow sink to the ground. Qagan smirked to himself. "Looking for me?" He chuckled to himself evilly. His eyes went from a piercing blue to a burning crimson.
With blinding speed and incredible silence Qagan climbed to a lower branch on the closest tree. He could see the figures clearly now below him. 6 humans were around the camp assuming attack positions. "Military?" Qagan wondered to himself. He knew Teya was in considerable danger and Qagan would not let her come to harm. They held assault type weapons with full clips, one small sidearm strapped around their thighs and tactical knives sheathed on their chests. All humans were wearing camouflage with ski masks covering their features. "Military." Qagan whispered to himself, answering his own question.
One of the humans made gestures with his hand and pointed toward the camp. The humans all moved in simultaneously looking down their weapon sites, silent as death. Qagan was impressed with their tactics, never had he seen humans execute movement so efficiently. "May be harder than I thought." Qagan thought to himself. The humans searched the camp as silently as they entered it. Teya was spotted near immediately and had a gun leveled on the Charmander but the humans finger was off the trigger. Qagan knew it was because Teya wasn't the one they were looking for. Qagan could see the humans scrambling about unable to find what they were looking for.
The humans were finishing their sweeps. "Clear." One of the humans whispered. They started to regroup after their searches were proving fruitless. The human standing over Teya was still holding off the trigger but turning to speak with another. The two seemed to be arguing and kept gesturing toward Teya. Qagan watched the last human regroup with the team and they started whispering to each other, Qagan could make out a small portion of their conversation.
"There's only the Charmander. None of us found the other, but I know he's around here."
"If this does turn out to be the one we're looking for it's dangerous to hang around here." Another worried.
"We're not going to split up and search the area. The Pokémon that was here is gone. So if the one that disappeared turns out to be the target, he will excel at one on one combat. We wait until he arrives." One of the humans gave a sigh. All of the humans were conversing except the one watching over Teya.
"If we stick around he'll kill us. What difference does it make?" One of them asked.
"We should question the Charmander about the other Pokémon." One suggested. "Just so we know for sure."
They looked to the soldier guarding the Charmander. Qagan shook his head. "Don't you touch her!" Qagan seethed, his crimson eyes burned darker. The odds that even one of the humans could understand Teya were tremendous. To them the Pokémon language may as well be gibberish, all they would hear was the Pokémon repeating its species name over and over again. Some humans had the ability to understand Pokémon naturally, a rare trait indeed. It was hard to explain how they could do it though. One of the humans gestured toward the guard. The guard gave a nod and walked over next to Teya.
Teya was awakened suddenly by a pair of hands grabbing her and lifting to the breast of the one who had grabbed her. She let out a short scream of struggle and tried to free herself to no avail. The hands locked her feet and claws together. Teya eyes were open wide and darting between the figures standing before her. She started to cry in fear and wriggled again in vain.
"Calm down!" One of the figures ordered. Teya's eyes locked onto the man who spoke to her.
"Tell us where your friend is!" He ordered again. Teya saw five humans standing in front of her.
"Qagan!" She yelled in fear. "Where is Qagan?" Tears were streaming down her face. Teya felt the grip on her loosen for a second. Teya looked up into the eyes of her captor, deep brown eyes with a hint of pity for the one they held.
"She's asking where Qagan is." The female voice came from the one who held her. The humans all looked frightened when she said the name of Qagan.
"Shit." One said.
"Where is Qagan?" The human asked the frightened Charmander. Teya looked back to the man questioning her.
"He... He was standing watch... I don't know where he is now." The human female once again repeated her words. The man questioning Teya scratched his head in anger and looked her dead in the eye.
"Where in the fuck is Qagan!?" The human screamed in her face. Teya was scared out of her mind.
"I... I don't know." Teya cried pitifully. The human gestured to his comrades and they took a step back. He removed the knife from his sheathe and inspected it carefully.
"Where is Qagan?" He asked again unrelenting.
The human holding her spoke before Teya could. "Sir... I don't think that's necessary." The man held his knife close to Teya's throat.
"Shut up, Hahrin. Do what you get paid to do and start fucking translating for me!" The woman holding Teya was obviously against this.
"Where is he?" The man asked growing impatient.
Teya was getting hysterical. "I don't know!" Teya cried loudly. The man lifted his knife to her face and cut her cheek quickly.
"Sir!" The woman yelled loudly. Dropping Teya to the ground and removing the 9mm from her holster and pointing it to the human who cut Teya. "Stand down!" She yelled.
Every other human in the camp lifted their weapons to the woman. "Our orders were to secure Qagan without harming any other Pokémon!" The man looked at her unbelieving, and a devious smile spread on his lips.
"She's only an animal." He said simply. "And it's a flesh-wound at best."
The woman's eyes burned with anger. "I'm not okay with that, sir." She held her gun steady at the man's head. Teya stood slowly and ran behind the woman's legs, Teya cradled her wound.
"Just like a scientist to try to be a hero. We're so close to him now, that thing has information leading to him and the end justifies the means." The woman shook her head slightly, her eyes suddenly opened wide with fear and she dropped her pistol. "Now see? Let's ge..."
The man was cut off by another voice. "Who said you needed her?" A deep voice yelled. The humans all turned and saw a tall Lucario with burning crimson eyes and his paws worked into fists. The woman turned, picked up the Charmander and ran behind the trunk of a tree as bullets started to fly.
Qagan dodged with blinding speed as bullets started to rip past him. The human closest to him was unlucky enough to fumble his gun. Qagan smacked it from his hands and grabbed him and used him as a shield. The others did not hesitate to fire on their friend. Qagan could feel the bullets impact the man as he screamed curses. Qagan pulled the knife from the man's sheathe and threw him against one of his comrades, knocking him off his feet Qagan ran to the next as he charged an aura ball in his right paw and threw it to a man farther away from him. Effectively blowing his arm off, the man's gun was a mangled mess on the ground as he fell forward cradling his wound. Qagan jammed the knife into a man's stomach and slashed to the right, gutting him. The man leaned forward to hold himself together and received a knife in the back of his neck. He died instantly and fell forward limp.
The man attempting to push the corpse off him was getting back on his feet. Qagan ran over and delivered punch after punch to him. The humans balance would not be regained. Qagan lifted his right paw and slammed his claw into the head of the human with unyielding power. The man's eye's went blank, Qagan yanked his claw out and ran over to the man on the ground cradling his blown off arm. Stepped on his neck and twisted his foot, breaking his neck. Qagan looked to the last man standing; He held a pistol leveled at Qagan. The man looked scared as hell and his gun was shaking wildly.
"Are you not their leader?" Qagan growled. The man started to walk backward slowly and eyes looking around for an escape.
"L... Look man. I give up. Let me go."
Qagan walked towards him slowly. "I'm not offering surrender." Qagan stated. The human dropped his pistol and turned to run; Qagan grabbed him and threw him to the middle of the camp. The man landed on his stomach and tried to crawl away. Qagan stomped on his back and the human let out a scream. "You hurt her..." Qagan seethed. "But I will destroy you." The man turned to Qagan.
"Mercy..." He pleaded. Qagan grabbed him and lifted him to his feet.
"No." Qagan replied. Qagan removed the man's knife and lifted it to his throat. "Suffer." Qagan whispered to him. Qagan pulled the knife through the man's neck and dropped him to the ground. Blood was pouring from him as he gasped for air. Qagan dropped the knife and turned to the tree the woman hid behind. He walked around and saw the woman was cradling Teya and Teya was hugging against the chest of the woman. Qagan smiled weakly, he looked to himself. Qagan noticed three holes in his torso bleeding heavily. "Shit..." He whispered. The woman looked over to him and gasped as he hit the forest floor.
