#3 of Hunter and Prey

"I really don't like this idea Gavin...." Karmin sighed as he looked down at the bottle in his paws, the smooth glass exterior reflecting the light that shimmered through the transparent liquid inside.

"You said it yourself. The kid is getting recless and his night terrors are getting worse. You know as well as I do that it's the best way to solve both our problems..." Karmin never took his eyes off the bottle, his mind and conconce fighting with what he was about to do. "D.S.R. is our best chance at helping the kid and keeping him from perusing this stupid crusade that he's on... All you have to do is find a way to give it to him at night and plant some suggestions. After a while we may even be able to stop the dosage and let him lead a normal life."

"But what happens if it doesn't work? You said it yourself that they didn't stop his dosage before he went awal. What makes you think that he'd be susceptible to it now?" Gavin sighed over the phone, wanting nothing more then to yell at the bear but knowing that it would get him nowhere.

"Look, at least try it. It should stop the night terrors so you won't have to worry about him dieing in his sleep anymore."

"It's still not right..." Karmin shot back, his voice growing more angered by the second. "That kid deserves retribution for what you guys did to him and I'd be taking any chance of that away if I do this..." The other end of the line was silent for a moment, then Gavin decided enough was enough.

"Look, we already traced your call and know exactly where you are right now. We could come out there and kill the both of you and be done with it but we're giving you a chance to save both your lives with this... Just dose the kid and tell him not to go after us anymore, alright?"

Karmin gave a deep growl, but finally relented. "Alright... I'll give him the dam drug, but if you guys fuck with him after this I'LL make you pay."

"Good choice... I'll have the next batch of doses ready for you by the time that you run out. Talk to you then." Karmin was about to reply, but a loud clicking from the other end told him that Gavin had hung up the phone.

"I just hope this is worth it..." He sighed to himself before stuffing his cell phone back into his pocket and walking back into the house. He could hear Dante moaning in the bedroom, the first signs of the night terrors he figured. A quick trip to the kitchen to fetch a glass of water and he had his dosing method.

By the time that he had reached Dante's bed, the fox was in the full throws of the night terrors again. Karmin sat down on the edge of Dante's bed and shook the kit's shoulder to wake him. It took a bit for Dante to wake, his mind seeming to fight the outside stimuli and keep him locked in the pools of blood that always seemed to be there waiting for him. "Come on kid... Come back to me and be ok..." He would gently coo to Dante hoping to calm him at least a little as he awoke.

As soon as Dante was awake enough to move, he lurched for the side of the bed and vomited into a bucket that Karmin had given him. Nearly every time that he woke his stomach would empty from all the adrenalin the terrors would cause. Karmin just rubbed his back, reassuring Dante until his stomach calmed.

"I-I'm sorry..." Dante whimpered as he lay back in the bed, his eyes blood shot and his fur covered in sweat. Karmin just grinned down to him kindly and handed him the glass of water, nearly wincing when the kit drank it all.

"It's gonna be ok now Dante... You just go back to sleep. I'll be here when you wake up ok?" Dante nodded to him, wiping away a few tears from disgust at his weakness before rolling away from Karmin and quickly drifting back to sleep. Unbeknown to him the drug was what put him out so fast. Karmin left the room for a while, still trying to decide if he should plant any suggestions. A feel of the phone in his pocket reminded him of the conversation, and the repercussions of ignoring it.

"Only cause I care kit..." He repeated to himself over and over as he made his way back to the bedroom, slowly and silently making his way to Dante's side. He leaned over the sleeping form of the fox, checking to make sure that he indeed was asleep.

"Start off easy. Give him a simple order that he wouldn't notice himself doing during the day to make sure that the drug is taking before you go any farther..." Gavin's instructions rang through his head as he tried to decide just what to plant as his first instruction and the first step to his betrayal. When he had finally decided what to say, Karmin leaned down close to Dante's ear. He hesitated for a moment, still not wanting to do it, but the want to protect Dante forced him on.

"Dante..." He whispered quietly in fear of waking him but with enough volume to be heard. "...When you wake up I want you to go into the kitchen and take a drink from the milk carton. When you're done, I want you to put it on the left side of the third shelf." He knew it was a stupid order, one that Dante wouldn't realize quickly if at all, but it was the only one he could think of. With his conscience beating down on him, Karmin slowly walked out of the room, turning back to look at Dante for a while as the kit finally seemed to be getting a decent night sleep. "Only cause I care..."

The next morning, Dante woke rested and seemingly a new fox. He couldn't believe how good he felt, stretching and giving a chuckle when he saw Karmin leaning in the doorway.

"Have a good sleep kid?" Dante nodded with a big grin, quickly hopping out of bed and rushing over to him.

"I don't know what was in that water you gave me last night, but it sure kept the stupid nightmare away..." Karmin tensed for a second, fearing that Dante knew what he had done; but relaxed quickly knowing that Dante couldn't have known and acting suspicious would only give him away. He patted Dante on the head and moved to let the fox through, waiting to see if his suggestion would take.

Dante chuckled up to him, brushing his hair back into place as he walked past and headed for the kitchen. "Hey poppa bear... We're out of milk!" Dante shouted from the kitchen. Karmin winced, kicking himself mentally for not remembering to check if there was any milk before planting the suggestion.

"I guess I'll run out and get some then. Why don't you hop in the shower and get cleaned up?" Karmin answered as he walked out into the entryway, Dante soon following.

"I'll just come with you... I'd like to get out of here for a bit anyway..." Again, Karmin had to think of an answer quick to keep from arousing suspicion.

"No offence kid, but you sweat a lot with the nightmares and you're a bit ripe... I shouldn't be long so you just go get cleaned up and we'll go out and do something fun when I get back ok?" Dante pouted a bit, but finally relented with a nod, rushing off to the bathroom.

"Ok but hurry back ok! I really want some milk!" Karmin winced at the word milk, never wanting to hear it again. He quickly left the house and went off to run his errand, leaving Dante alone in the house.

By the time that he returned, Dante had washed and dried and was waiting out in the living room. He jumped out of the chair when Karmin came into the house and snatched the milk out of his paws, popping the cap off and taking a large swig. When he was finished, Dante popped the cap back on and walked into the kitchen. Karmin followed, watching with a mix of relief and anxiety when Dante put it on the left side of the third shelf.

"Now can we go?" Dante asked with a big grin, wiping the milk from his muzzle that had spilled. Karmin gave him a nod, motioning for him to follow.

The day went by quickly, the pair doing everything from watching a new movie to eating out. Dante couldn't help but make a joke about it seeming like a date, causing various reactions throughout the day from Karmin to the fox's amusement. When they returned home, both slumped down on the porch and watched the sun set, letting the day play through their heads.

"Thanks for today Karmin..." Dante finally sighed while he watched the sky changing from blue to orange to a beautiful purple and everything in between. "You're the only one that I have left to keep me together... The only one that I can trust."

Karmin couldn't help but feel guilty when he heard that, knowing that he would have to give Dante another dose of D.R.S. He got out of his chair with a grunt, walking ver and opening the door to the house and turning back to Dante.

"I think it's about time that we got to bed kid... I got a meeting with an informant tomorrow and depending on what he tells me you may be up late.." Dante nodded with a sigh, following him into the house and walking back to his bed. Karmin followed a few moments later, a glass of water in his paw.

"It seemed to help last night so we might as well give it a try tonight..." Karmin offered as an explanation when Dante gave a questioning look. The young fox shrugged his shoulders and quickly downed the whole glass, giving a slight burp when he finished. Karmin gave him a weak smile and a pat on the ass to get him moving into the bed.

"Goodnight Dante.. I hope you have a good sleep..." Dante gave him a nod and grin before rolling over and quickly drifting off to sleep. Karmin watched him for a few hours, making sure that the night terrors wouldn't come, then went to work planting his next suggestion.

Nearly half an hour of whispering and repeating later and Karmin was finished, his eyes heavy with lack of sleep.

"Only cause I care..." He whispered again before closing the door and walking away to get some rest of his own.

The rifle felt heavy in his paws, well over it's actual eight pounds. He wanted to drop it badly but wouldn't dare; least he give his pursuers a better path to follow. He made his way through the thick underbrush between the trees. He could still hear...
