Fishing for a Bear

Part 2

Dallas laid across the front seat of his truck. He took long slow draws on his new scorched-black pipe, letting the smoke pool around the dim cab light. He flicked his tongue as the smoke left his mouth, sending smoke rings wafting to the roof of the cab. Dallas chuckled a bit as he remembered how Adam had explained how to do it; he could still hear that gruff old voice saying, "Now just hold your mouth open like you're about to suck my dick, and flick your tongue."

Dallas looked at the clock on his dash, 11:59, and then back to the smokey ceiling. He twirled the cord attached to his mic around his finger, watching the smoke swirl above his head as he waited for Adam's call. He still couldn't believe how close they'd gotten in such a short time; it'd only been a few weeks, but he was starting to fall for the guy. Adam had showed Dallas so many new and interesting things, for example that day he'd gone fishing; he didn't even know how to hold a fishing pole much less use one. Sure his father had taken him a bunch of times, but he'd never been fishing that way. That day was so wonderful. Dallas could still hear that *Thwic-wiz* of the fishing pole as he cast if for the first time, he could still feel Adam's body pressed against his as he showed him what to do, and he could still taste that kiss they shared right after he caught his first fish. Dallas mmm'ed softly as he remembered how on that same night they'd made love under that starry night, as the fish cooked on their camp fire. Adam snapped out of his blissful memory as he heard a squawk on his CB through his speakers, "Papa bear to cubby bear."

Dallas smiled a bit as he heard that, and he double checked that the channel was on 22; off the channel the rest of the town used. Dallas clicked down his talk button, "Cubby bear here." He continued, "So how did you sleep last night papa?"

"Good," Adam said back, "Though I was a little cold; I think my body got used to the warm-tight-fuzzy thing that's been sleeping next to me lately."

Dallas felt his cheeks flush red, "Yeah I missed sleeping next to you too, it was weird not having those strong arms of yours wrapped around me." Dallas closed his eyes, "But it takes four hours to drive up to Miss Maggie's place, and if I hadn't of been there at ten sharp to fix her stove; I never would have heard the end of it. You know how her and my mother like to talk. They both would have been up my ass for months about it."

Dallas heard a chuckle through the speakers, "Hey, isn't that my job."

Dallas laughed at Adam's comment, "Yeah, I guess it is."

"Oh speaking of that, think you can swing by my place tonight?" Adam asked.

Dallas checked the calendar in his truck, and frowned as he saw the date. "Not really, I have a repair jobs lined up all morning. It's like everything decided to take a shit today."

There was an even longer pause this time, "Anyway you can postpone them?"

Dallas shook his head no; even though he knew Adam couldn't see. "No, I can't leave the Johns' without running water, and I can't leave the Clarks without heat; they have a new baby in the house. "

"To bad, I was hoping to see you before I went home today at nine." And there it was. The subject Dallas had been avoiding since he met Adam, the fact that he would have to leave. It felt as if someone had reached inside of him, and started to twist his insides. He knew this was coming, and whatever they had, whatever it was, wasn't going to last, but he'd been so wrapped up in it, to give the end any thought. "You okay?" Adam's voice cracked over the radio.

Dallas shook his head, and realized he'd been quiet for a while, "Yeah sorry..." He said in a cold distant tone. "Do you think you'll be coming back soon?" Dallas asked hopefully.

"Maybe next year," Adam answered. "But only if I can get the time off work."

Dallas felt disappointment sink its claws into his chest. "Oh okay." Adam replied, in that same cold tone.

"Sorry cub, but hey, you have my info, we can still talk, we'll keep in touch. Anyway I need to run, I want to go fishing one last time before I leave tonight. I just wish I could see you, and have a proper send if, if ya know what I mean. Anyway bye cub, it's been fun."

Dallas sat up in his seat, and click back down the talk button. "Yeah, see ya later papa bear." Dallas felt tears start to well in his eyes. He felt like it was happening all over again. This always happened. He'd let himself get to close, fly to close to the sun, and his heart would get burned. Usually it was for a much bigger reason than this, but it still hurt, he didn't want to lose what he and Adam had. He slumped back in his seat, closed his eyes, and mumbled to himself. "I need a drink."

***

Dallas let out a loud belch that seemed out of place on his frame, it just didn't fit his size, it was as if something bigger had let it out. He growled to himself, and smashed the empty beer can against his head; crumpling it as if it was a Dixie cup. "Fuck it." Adam tossed the beer can in the pile of other empty ones, and grabbed another out of what was left of the 24 pack, before he laid the back of his head against the stump he was leaning against. "Every time I get close to someone, they leave..." He popped open the top of his beer, and took a swig. "At least when the others left they had a good reason, they couldn't take me after the claws came out, but to lose Adam like this is just, bullshit." He threw his hand to the side, the beer in his hand slashing around, "Fuck it." He contained as he took another swig of his beer, "I'm done with everyone, if they can't take me for me, then I don't need those fucktards anyway. From now on my one thought is getting my dick wet, and nothing else. I'm done with everyone... even if I did love him."

Dallas downed the rest of his beer, and crushed the can against his head again. "He'd probably just run away anyway, when he found out what I'm really like." He shook his head, "Maybe I'll try online dating like my aunts and uncles, at least then I wouldn't have to worry about the being different part." Dallas downed the last beer from the pack, "If only he was like me, then this all would be easier. I could at least give it a shot with him, tell him how I feel, and then maybe start something with him. And be more than just a fuckbuddy."

Dallas felt his ears twitch as an idea came to his intoxicated mind. "What if he was like me?" Dallas put his hand on the stump behind him, and used it to stand up; his fingers crushed the wood under them, leaving deep marks in the hard wood. "That's it!" He exclaimed, as he threw his arms up in the air, making a few drops of his beer splash onto his shirt. "If he was like me, he could stay, and we could be together." He downed his beer, "Or at least try to be..."

Dallas threw the last beer with the other empties. That amount of beer would have killed any normal man, but Dallas wasn't a normal man. Adam undid the straps to his overalls, letting them fall to the forest floor. He stripped out of his shirt, underwear, and set them in a pile on the stump he'd been leaning on. Dallas rolled his shoulders, making them snap and pop, before his breath grew long and deep. His eyes flashed over, changing from their normal emerald green, to a dark earthy brown. Dallas's bones started to crack and pop as they shifted. His arms and legs thickened as his hips and torso expanded. His whole body expanded, giving him a thick (if not thicker) build than Adam's. Dallas let out a cry of pain as his shifting body forced him to fall forward onto all fours. Adam's joints popped and groaned, they re-arranged themselves, so that his arms became more like legs, and he could easily stand on all fours. A thick brown coat of fur started to spread over his body, as his own hair began to fall out.

Adam's shifted up the side of his head, becoming more rounded as they went, until they finally came to rest on top of his head. His face began to elongate, and his nose started to morph into something cold, black, and flat. Adam gripped the ground as his hands started to crack and change, growing rough black pads on the palms, and fingers, before they shortened and turned into large brown paws. Adam let out a low pleasant groan as he felt his foreskin re-arranging, pulling back down along his shaft, covering it in a smooth cover that covered the length of his cock, a fine velvety fur grew along it, changing it into a sheath that covered his sensitive pink fleshy cock. Dallas gripped his claws into the dirt, and let out a loud roar as he felt something pressing out from his lower back, just above his rump. Dallas felt a soft pop as a stubby fleshy tail sprang above his rounded brown fuzzy ass, before being covered with a soft coat of fur of its own.

The new bear sat on the ground, panting as he adjusted to his new form; he looked down at his body. It was a little more feral looking than he normally like, but for what he was about to do, it'd work just fine. He stood up on all fours, and stretched; his back cracking. He lifted his new snout up to the air, and started to sniff. It only took him a few moments to pick up on that distant scent of old worn leather, mixed with that sweet smell of tobacco; a scent he'd smelled up close almost every night for the past few weeks. He let out a soft grunt, and started to run through the forest as fast as his four legs could carry him. He felt trees and shrubs whiz past him, the underbrush gripping at his fur as he went. He could feel the earth between his paws, that closeness with everything around him, the sensation filling him with a feeling of joy; it was as if he was connected to the earth around him. He could feel the trees sway in the wind, and he could hear every sound as if it was crystal clear, even through his clouded mind. It felt so right.

Dallas came to a long winding river, and then followed it up stream, every now and then sniffing the air, locking onto that combo of pipe tobacco and old worn in leather. When Dallas got close he stayed just inside the woods, so he could fallow the river, but still stay out of site. He crept through the underbrush, stopping as he neared Adam, he crouched, and poked his nose through the underbrush, his eyes narrowing as he saw Adam knee deep in the water in his waders. I have to be careful, he told himself. Just a little bite. I don't want to hurt him... to bad. Dallas wiggled his toes into the earth below him, and dug his back claws into the earth. He contorted his face into the best snarl he could muster, and took a long deep breath. The bear roared at the top of his lungs, as he burst through the underbrush, heading straight for Adam.

Adam turned towards Dallas, he didn't run, he didn't flinch, and instead he stood there, holding his ground. He reached for something attached to his fishing belt, and pulled out a black tube. What is that? Dallas asked himself, as he gave another roar. Adam twisted the top, pointed it at the bear's face, and pushed down the top. A thick mist shot from it, and hit Dallas square in the eyes from fifteen feet away. It took a second for Dallas to feel the burning in his drunken state, but soon enough the bear mace had done its job, and he was in a world of pain. He kept running as his eyes started to water, his vision blurring. Adam became an obscured blur in the coming distance. Dallas felt one of his front paws catch a rock, and he felt himself tumble forward, his head slamming into Adam, knocking him into the river.

Dallas roared out in pain, and started to snap his jaws at what he thought was Adam as he began to panic. He managed to grab onto Adam's coat a few times, but Adam always managed to pull away in time, just before Dallas could make contact with his skin. Dallas saw something metallic flash through his blurry vision, and then he felt something slash against his upper leg and then stab into his rump. He roared out in pain again, standing up on his hind legs, and slashing the air in front of him, his claws slashing over Adam's chest; their blood mixing together in a blur of red around them.

The burning in Dallas's eyes was became to intense for him to handle, and when he felt the knife slide out of him, he knew it was time to leave. He knew Adam was hurt, so he grabbed him by the scruff of his waders (far away from his reach and his knife) and dragged him up on shore. When he was sure Adam was safe, he took off into the woods, smashing into trees as he went, his leg and ass bleeding, his vision barely, only able to make out the shapes of the trees he was hitting. He used his ears to find his way back to the running water, far away from where Adam was, and he plunged his head into the icy cold water, and opened his eyes. He let out a sigh of relief as that cold water washed the bear mace from his eyes. He stayed there for a while, bringing his head up only to take a breath, before he plunged it back in. He stayed there until he could bring his head above the water, and not feel any pain.

When Dallas was stable enough to walk again, he waddled back to where he'd left Adam. He was gone, and judging by the scent of fresh diesel fuel in the air, he'd made it back to his truck. Dallas looked down at the cuts on his left leg and ass. He was going to need stitches, and so was Adam, if he got him as hard as he thought he did. Dallas's ears lowered flat to his head, and he felt a heavy weight start to fill his heart. His mind began to clear, and the gravity of what he had just done began to set in. He'd tried to change Adam to get him to stay, instead of just going up to him and talking to him like an adult, he'd acted like a child going on impulse. Maybe it was his own fault none of his other relationships hadn't worked out, maybe he'd moved way to fast, maybe he had some growing up to do... No. He did have some growing up to do. He realized on the walk back to his truck, he needed to grow as a person before he could ever bring someone else into his life. Maybe this all was for the best.

Dallas hobbled over to where his clothes were, and changed back to his human form; the cuts on his lower body still bleeding. He looked down at the stab wound and cuts. They were going to need stitches. He grabbed his clothes, and walked back over to his truck. He opened the door, and grabbed the first aid kit from inside; he was so thankful for the summers he spent he spent working for Dr. Gerald now. Dallas bandaged up his wound, but he didn't have the supplies to stitch himself up, so he was going to have to go to the clinic in town. He got dressed, hopped into his truck, and drove down the road that lead into town.

***

Dallas parked his car down the road from the doctor's office, he knew Adam might be there, and he was the last person on earth that he wanted to see right now. He took the old path through the woods that he'd worn down over the years, it was a little over grown, but he could still make it out through the surrounding forest. He checked to make sure no one was around before he made the dash to the back door, pulling out the spare key that Dr. Gerald gave him to use in case he needed to get into the clinic while he wasn't around. He unlocked the door, and cracked it open; he stood there for a moment, making sure no one was around before he went inside, ducking into a nearby store room. He flicked on the overhead light, and gathered what he needed from the shelves. Dallas took off his pants, and set a bed pan on a nearby shelf to use as a make shift mirror as he stitches himself up.

Dallas cleaned out his wounds, and got to work sowing them up. He heard footsteps, and his eyes flashed brown as he forced his ear canals to change to their animalistic state, allowing him to amplify any surrounding sound. "Is he going to be okay doctor?" Asked an older female voice; Dallas recognized the voice as Nurse Penny.

"I believe so. He's a tough guy, that's for sure. How many people could walk, much less drive away from a bear attack? Back when I worked in Fairbanks I saw one of these every now and again, and they were much worse." He continued, "No bites, a few scratches, and a broken arm. That's really something to be thankful for." Said a mature males voice; Dr. Gerald.

Dallas felt a sinking feeling fill his chest as he heard the "no bite" part; at least he hadn't transferred anything to Adam, but it still made him feel like dirt knowing he caused him all that pain for nothing.

"Yeah he is, but he's been asking if he'll be able to make his flight." Said Penny.

"I'd prefer he didn't, I want to get a second ex-ray sometime next week, I don't really like how I set the bone, and I want to make sure it's healing before he gets on the plane. Besides with all that traveling he's at risk for a blood clot, and I'd like to get some anticoagulating medicine in his system before he goes, but Mister Jenkins took my last prescription and I'm going to have to get some shipped in. So tell him to sit tight, and get comfortable for the next two weeks." Said Dr. Gerald.

"I will." Penny said. Dallas heard footsteps walking away. He sighed to himself and gathered up any garbage he'd created and stuffed it in his pockets; he'd come back in the morning and replace anything he'd taken, but right now he just wanted to get out. He bandaged up his wound, put on his pants, and slipped out of a small window in the upper right corner of the room.

Dallas wanted to run so badly, as he made his way back to his truck, but he knew if he did he'd screw up the fresh dressing he'd just put on. He wanted to clear his head; feel that familiar forest around him, feel the leaves and branches brush against his fur, as he weaved and dodged through the trees. When he got in his truck he realized what he wanted to feel more than anything though, those strong arms that had been holding him during those cold nights. But knowing what he'd done, how could he ever look Adam in the eyes again?
