Chapter Six: Impact

The team stood there silent, the only sound was the AC-472's engines, humming almost happily it seemed. After a few seconds Sain broke the silence,

"What!?" She gestured wildly, "We're stuck inside this thing, with no way out, and it's going to crash into HQ?"

Alyx nodded,

"That is the situation in a nutshell. Yes."

Vance looked around and blanched,

"I figured it out right after the holding cell blew." He looked down, "But what should have tipped us off first was the lack of elite soldiers."

Swanson walked up to the processor in the middle of the room,

"We could try to hotwire this thing."

Alyx shook his head looking over at the blue wyvern,

"Look carefully at the case." He pointed at one of the cracks, which had a white clay-like substance coming out of it. "C4, if not E72... I can't tell unless we detonate it... But it looks like it's rigged if we so much as touch this thing..." He trailed off.

Swanson swore as he looked at the thing,

"So what are you suggesting we do eh?"

Alyx shrugged,

"I'm clueless, any suggestions would be nice." He glanced out the large window, the HQ still a little ways off, "Looks like we have at least fifteen minutes."

Duke, a gray fox; was an explosives tech who'd been on the team for a long while now, walked forwards.

"Well I'm the one who handles shit like this, so lemme see." He crouched down in front of the processor. He pulled out a toolkit and a small PDA-like device; he flipped it on and began typing out commands on it.

Alyx sighed and looked back out the window, he flinched as he felt Sain tap his wings softly.

"We've got these, between me, you, Raurian, and Rex. We could carry everyone off; there are only eight of us."

Alyx nodded,

"Nine, you forgot yourself. Even so, I don't fancy taking off while this thing is going this fast."

Sain nodded and turned around as there was a muffled "Ah-hah" from Duke. The fox stood up and took out a cutting torch,

"The flight cables are right under this point, I think I can cut into it without detonating anything and at least steer us away from base." He looked around flipping the Faceplate of his helmet down, "Seeing as I'm the only one with explosives armor on I'd suggest you all go take cover outside."

Alyx nodded,

"See if you can't slow it down too."

Duke grunted in affirmation as the eight others quickly got out of the control room and crouched behind whatever they could outside the room in case something blew. Which of course, something did, something always does. There was a large explosion that rocked the ship as part of the wall was ripped out, smoke billowing from the room.

Alyx and Swanson were already up and moving back into the room for Duke less than two seconds after the blast. Flames were climbing up the processor as the E72 burned slowly. E72 worked in two stages, an initial explosion and then a fire that could melt nearly any metal.

Swanson looked around and quickly spotted the foxes body he picked Duke up and carried him back out into the hallway, he motioned to Alyx that he had him safe. Alyx backed out of the room growling as bits of his shirt caught fire,

"Everyone to the launching bays, we'll fly out of here. Sain, Rex, Swanson, will each carry one of you. I can carry duke and whoever else."

Timothy Raaz, a white mouse stepped up,

"I'm smallest I'll go with you."

Alyx nodded and began following the rest of the team down to the hangar.

They were three levels away from the hangar when the fire system cut on, foam and water spraying out drenching the already down-spirited team causing a couple of them to slip of the ladders and floors.

"I hate this shit" Where the only words heard; no one really knew who said them, but in their minds, they all agreed.

After about five minutes they found the launching bay. The large doors at the rear of the ship were already open. A single G&W fighter plane sat in the middle of the hangar. As they stepped in they watched as the fighter slowly slid on the foam and water mixture until it slid out of the bay.

Alyx turned around,

"Alright, this is where we get off." He motioned to Rex, "You and whoever goes with you is first."

Rex nodded as Vance walked up to him. There was a startled meep from Vance as Rex suddenly grabbed him and threw both of them out of the hangar. The rest of the team watched as Rex dived farther down with Vance clutched to him before he spread his wings and slowed their falling to a lazy glide.

Alyx pointed at Swanson,

"Your go."

Swanson was paired with Daniel, a black and white husky. Swanson was a little more careful in his decent than Rex. He came and drifted up beside Rex the pair of them following the ship best they could.

Sain grinned,

"Guess it's me and Ruze now." She looked up at the female Clydesdale who looked skeptical, "Oh God."

Ruze stood there,

"Are you sure you can carry me? I'm a head taller than you."

Sain rolled her eyes,

"Yes I'm sure; just don't squirm. I wouldn't want to drop you." She laughed.

She vaulted out of the hangar snatching the brown furred horse up with her. She formed up behind Swanson and Rex, who both were laughing.

Alyx looked down at the ground which was getting slowly closer,

"Razz, get up on my back."

The mouse did as he was told and sat up there atop the dragon's shoulders looking quite scared. Alyx looked up at him,

"Ready?"

The mouse nodded and squeezed his eyes shut, as Alyx, unlike the others, fell out of the ship instead of jumping. Alyx grinned as he heard the mouse shriek before he spread his wings slowing their decent. He leveled out into a glide next to the other three, he gestured where they were to land and began to circle slowly down towards the Earth below. He glanced over his shoulder to see Raaz gripping on to him as tight as he could.

"You doing okay back there?" Alyx yelled over the wind which had picked up.

The mouse squeaked back,

"I'm a dragon rider! Mice don't ride dragons! If my heart beats any faster I shall die. This is terrifying!"

Alyx chuckled and looked down at Duke who was stirring a little he heard him groan softly,

"I knew it I'm dead."

"Not quite. But you tried didn't you?" Alyx had bent his head down close to the fox's. Duke looked up and laughed softly shaking his head before looking down and making a small noise.

"I think Imma puke."

Alyx ignored the fox's last remark and went into a tight yet lazy spiral towards where he'd indicated for the others to land.

He touched down as lightly as he could, which was still rough enough to throw the mouse off his back. Raaz got back up shaking dirk and dust out of his white fur.

"I'm never riding a dragon again I'll just stay and burn to death in the ship next time, thank you very much."

Alyx shook his head and released Duke from his grip. The fox staggered and fell on the ground with a yelp as his leg gave out. Alyx crouched down quickly.

"Are you okay?"

The fox grimaced as pain lanced up his leg,

"Yeah... No. I think my left leg's broke."

The other three dragons landed close by and Swanson walked over looking down at Duke, whose leg was twisted at an odd angle. He pulled out his medical kit and sat down beside the fox quickly beginning to tend to him.

"I got him. It could be worse."

Alyx nodded and turned away to watch the AC-472 list slowly over as it came crashing into the earth some few miles away from the HQ. A blast was heard as the ships' main fuel lines went up, spitting a glowing orange, yellow, and blue ball of fire at least a mile high.

Rex whistled watching it,

"Glad we got off before that happened."

Alyx nodded turning to look at Rex and his sister. Then just at Sain.

"So what's carrying a Clydesdale like?"

Sain made a face as Rex walked off laughing,

"Painful." She rubbed one of her shoulders, "She had better appreciate it though." Sain turned and looked at the pillar of smoke that was coming from the ships wreckage.

"So where do you think Craight and Zighz are?"

Alyx looked down.

"I'm not sure, but we need to find them." He touched his COM unit flipping it on, "Gleets, you there?"

There was static for a moment before Gleets came on,

"Thank God Alyx! I haven't been able to establish a link with any of you since the ship started exploding. You all okay?"

"Yeah, Duke injured his leg but aside from that we're all one-hundred percent." Alyx paused for a second,

"Alert all the other members that Craight and Zighz are still out there somewhere and we need to get them before the enemy extracts the information from them."

"Roger. Anything else? You want a gunship or transport out there?"

"No we're good, one of the trucks is close by, and we'll get to it." Alyx flipped off the COM and turned around motioning for the rest of the team to follow as he made his way towards the deuce and a half.

. . .

A tall muscular human walked into the dark room. With what little light was actually in there he could see his own breath as well as the shimmer of ice on the floor in places. He shivered his uniform not being built for winter conditions, the cold air cut right through it. A voice came from the corner of the room.

"General," there was a short pause as the voice had a coughing fit, "Just who I wanted to see." A light turned on revealing the frail and twisted body of the arctic wolf in his wheelchair. No one knew how he was exactly related to the army but everyone just called him Eli, whether it was his real name or not, none knew.

The general saluted smartly as soon as he could see where his superior was, "Yessir, you called for me?"

"Yes, yes of course. Have a seat." A small hand gestured to one of the chairs with ice layering on it.

"Actually sir, if it pleases you , I'd rather stand." The general replied shuffling a little nervously.

"Of course, I forgot you don't care for the cold like I do." The wolf nodded before continuing, "Anyway I called you here to discuss the Guardians." The general stiffened, aside from Eli and the guardians the anthros or evolutionaries, as some called them, had nearly been purged from the Northern United Powers of Europe's armies.

"Yessir, what of them?"

"I believe that The Guardian Corps has gone long enough with its members not knowing their true power and reason." Eli leaned back in his wheelchair with a wicked smile upon his face. "I trust you know what that entails?"

The general nodded his face paling remember the predecessors of the guardians and how they'd ultimately rebelled. "If memory serves I can remember the last time we tried it-"

"SILENCE!" The wolf barked making the general jump, "It shall work this time it's planned out according to the technician Vance's theories "

The wolf grabbed a folder off the table next to him and tossed it to the general who opened it and looked at the picture of the blue dragoness. He looked up at Eli, "Are you serious? What if it doesn't work? And how am I su-"

Eli looked up and growled his fur bristling. The wolf was confined to a wheelchair, but he was still terrifying "That is not of your concern. I have provided you with the proper equipment in a package that is now in your personal quarters."

"Yessir, and what of the lessers?"

"Kill them all."

The general nodded and retreated away as Eli dismissed him.
