Chapter four
The way of grey
Although it took some slide of hand from her, Sarah was able to go back to the wolf not only to watch him and his ways but to speak to him without him being connected to the computer. For some reason which she was not able to explain he was able to match her brain waves and send his words into her brain so that she may hear him. His lips never moved the only indication that he was about to say anything was his eyes which from the beginning she had found beautiful. He told her of his pack and how he was alpha and how he protected them from the hunters. How he had left behind his mate, his pups, and all he knew. He told her his true name was grey wolf given to him by his father and that he was to be the alpha male one day. When that day came and he took on the flame and found a mate. Her name was Tahoe she was a wolf from another pack. As a rule alpha males pick life long mates and normally pick mates from their own packs. But he wanted none from his own pack for he had already smelled this female once. While he was young he was on a scent trail of a raccoon when he happened upon a small water fall. Being a young pup he ignored the raccoon and leapt into the water to take a swim. He swam about for a good while before climbing out as water dripped from his thick grey fur. As he climbed out from the pool the morning air hit his muzzle and he stopped before he had a chance to shake out his coat. His yellow eyes glanced about through the woods and saw nothing then suddenly there was a rustling straight ahead. He twisted his head to the side as a young pup would then stepped forwards not yet knowing what was there. Out of the bush bounded another wolf this one black as onyx. He stepped backwards upon his large young paws only too lose his footing and slip back into the falls. He gasped for a moment as his muzzle slipped under the water then surfaced. Once he gained his composure he focused on the creature and was completely lost in the moment. Being in a rather unbecoming position he paddled a bit farther down to the edge climbed out and shook the cold water from his fur. He raised his lowered head to meet a sight to which he had never had fall upon his eyes. It was another wolf this one female and from another pack he could tell by the scent he had smelled earlier. She was locked onto him in a look of half wonder as he was to her and one of laughter after seeing him fall back into the water. Being the son of a leader he did as best he could to be proud and slowly padded to her stopping a few feet from her his yellow eyes locked to her's.
From that moment on they were friends the two young wolves would run the forest together side by side. All that would be seen was the black and grey streak as they ran their daily trail around their pack's land. One day grey would show her something within is land and the next she would do the same. Tahoe meant the world to him and he would protect her to his own death. Both wolf packs agreed that because these two were sons and daughters of the alphas that it was to be that once they assumed the position both packs would become one.
Chapter five
Revelation
Later that night Sarah asked him "how can you talk to me can you do this with others?" He smirked to her laying at the front of his steel cage watching the human with his somewhat glazed yellow eyes. "All animals can do this." Sarah snapped from her trance after listening to him and spoke out loud "but.....but how is it that you can speak to me and others can not?" The grey wolf stood stretching out long growling for a moment then shook his head and turned to her looking her dead in the eye. "Did you humans ever think for a moment that maybe we what you call animals CHOOSE not to talk to you? All animals talk to one another from the smallest ant to the large blue whale. We do not talk of much amongst one another but we do speak each time an animal is killed for reasons other than food. So each time an animal is killed a shock wave is heard around the world through out all animals and only you humans are too ignorant to listen. When I was shot, first I thought I was dying, that I was going to be some fucking trophy or blanket. But when I realized that I was tranquilized I knew there was some sort of higher purpose so I called the rest of my pack away to save them. I figured there was a reason why I was chosen to fall and I made peace with myself and said so be it."
Sarah sat bewildered on a few levels for one she was the first human to make true contact with a creature not of her own race, and two that this normal grey wolf was spilling his guts out to her whether she wanted to hear it or not. She had been taking notes which the wolf did not seem to mind for he knew she could not prove that they had linked minds. After all the scientists who only knew their test tubes and electronics so she would surely be called insane. She sat for a moment watching the wolf with her green eyes with a feeling of sorrow that she had not had before. Suddenly she saw the sacrifice that this animal had made to save his fellow kind. "I.....I am truly sorry that you ended up here. That you ended up in this cage if I had it my way things would be different." He listened to her for a moment then an ear twisted at her words making him stand. He turned to the front of the cage and padded to it pressing his muzzle between the bars looking to her. "Dear lady please tell me how you would change this situation?" He stood still watching her fighting to hold back his feral emotions that told him to rip her heart out right then and there if given the chance. "I.....I will talk to the supervisors maybe I can get them to make some more realistic enclosures, I know it is not much but at least it is more than just a cage. But you have to help me as well by letting me put the link back into your head and provide us with something more. And pass this along to your other brother animals if they want to be more at home they will have to give more."
The wolf stepped back for a moment looking to her. "I will do as you want but you have to trust me. You will have to give yourself to me as we wolves do and that is by offering your throat to me. I will not offer you mine because I do not trust you yet Sarah and only once I am no longer in a cage will I." She thought for a moment about how dangerous and stupid this was to do for he was a wild caged animal, what rational thought could be posses in his feeble K9 mind? But she wanted to progress in the research and she had already turned off the mic and video feed replacing it with a loop video so no one would see what happened. She took in a deep breath and knelt in front of the steel bars of his cage. The bars were spaced 10 inches apart plenty for a wolf to get his jaws through. He padded to her with a grin upon his muzzle it had been a long time until he had a female of any kind at his mercy. Whether she knew it or not he held her life in his balance as he turned his muzzle to the side forcing through the bars and opening. For the moment giving herself to him allowing him to take her throat into his jaws she could feel his long pure white K9 teeth against her skin, feeling his hot angry breath flush her naked pelt. He let out a deep rumble that started from his gut and crashed into her like a freight train causing a feeling to pulse through out her body. He clenched tighter till he could feel the tips of his razor sharp teeth begin to pierce her fair skin. Suddenly he let go pulling his muzzle though the bars turning and padding the back of the cage. "we shall see what becomes of these matters."
Chapter six
Negotiations
Now only she possessed this knowledge but she knew that no one would believe with out data so something had to be done. The next day she marched into the manager's office and told him she had an idea. That if some of the animals were put into more natural environments that they may open up more. At first the project manager thought she was nuts but as they were not having any success with the current project and a review was coming soon he nodded. "Well tell you what, you pick a damn animal and go for it, let me know what u need and we will do it. But fuck Sarah if we don't get some kind of results soon the big wigs are gonna shut us all down!" Sarah had been standing listening to this then she smirked as the wolf had to her and slunk into one of his chairs. "Well sir I have reason to believe that the grey wolf in cage number 076 is a prime candidate. Although he does not respond through the speaker much I have reason to believe that he is listening." The manager raised a brow " and how do you know this I have seen the footage of all those fucking predators and I have not seen a damn thing out of them." Sarah stood from her chair watching the manager trying to use a bit of the look that the wolf had given her " trust me sir this one is special but only this one. I have studied other wolves in the past and they are nothing but.....pardon my French.... butt sniffing meat hunting beasts, so getting more specimens of this type won't do any good." The manager nodded "I agree damn fucking wild dogs if you ask me. Just write out what you need for the damn thing and have at it."
Sarah returned to grey's cage at night. She had a high security clearance card so she could get in after dark. She also knew that at this time the cameras were off so she could talk with him one on one. Walking along the corridor of predators she could not shake the feeling of being sorry for them. After hearing his story of how the wolf got where he did and how his life was torn apart, she could only imagine that the same was for all these once proud creatures. She shined her flashlight on the cage numbers till she came upon 076. She looked about for him but saw nothing crouching to the ground, a moment of fear filled her as his cage was rather large for a smallish mammal.
He spoke to her once again through her mind as he had already forged a link with her, "You have no idea where I am, but yet I could kill you in an instant if it were not for these bars." She rolled back on her feet startled at his words landing on her rear. She sat up looking about cage 076 for the grey wolf then she spotted him dead center padding towards her. "I could have killed you before you turned that light on if I wanted Sarah. But I won't because I need you to get me out of here, out of this hell. But strangely above all I trust you for what reason I have no idea. The other day when you offered me your throat, which by the way was a very stupid thing to do because after these long months in her all I could dream of was to kill one of you.
Chapter seven
Nature in a can
Sarah stood tall and actually growled back at the wolf making him step back. "You stupid fucking beast before you try to kill me why don't you find out why I am actually here? If you did not notice it is way after hours I am here just for you grey. I want to help but you have to trust me as well. You have shown me how wrong we humans have been and I want to change things but it has to start somewhere right?" With that Sarah made a move that would either seal their relationship or sign her own funeral. Somehow she had managed to get access to the cage keys and found 076. She reached into her pocket pulling out a key ring with a large yellow tag and a single silver key. Now the wolf was cornered, he backed to the rear of the cage with his rear hitting the cold steel of the wire fence. Sarah inserted the key into the lock took a deep breath and opened the cage walking boldly inside. She was smart enough to close the door behind her locking it once again. She looked about the dark cage squinting but seeing nothing. Grey whispered to her "use your other senses your ears, your nose, think as an animal." It was no use, although she had learned to speak to him mentally she just could not raise her other senses. He shook his head and padded from the darkness to her stopping a few feet from her. "I understand and it will come with time Sarah. Although why I chose to teach you such things still vexes me as it was your kind who took all I know away." He cocked his head to the side looking a bit like a puppy and spoke again " why are you in here anyways? You say you want a chance to speak then you have the gall to step into my small domain made of steel and concrete so I feel I have to at least give that to you."
She stood her ground as at this point it was all or nothing not only for the research, but her life. " I talked to the program manager and he is going to let me build you a proper area in the forest. If you begin to give us the data we want we will give you more leeway. Look I want nothing more than to release you now but you have a tracking unit implanted in you and they will simply hunt you down. For now this is the best I can do for you grey do you understand?" A tear rolled from her green eye making the wolf wince and stepped towards her almost nose to nose taking in her scent. He shook his head and flicked his tongue out wiping away her tear. "Please do not cry for me you did not do this to me or any of these animals in this place." He sighed turning from her padding to the fence looking out into the night. "I thank you for your hard work trying to put me in a better place and I guess anything is better than this damn cell. I will do as you ask and give you this data that your superiors so hungrily want but there will be rules. First I will only speak to you." He turned moving back to her nose to nose with a smirk on his muzzle. "You have a lot of balls doing what you did tonight putting your life in harm's way. I respect you for taking that step, I see something different in you that I have not in the others. If the scientists want proof of intelligent life on earth other than their own I will give it to them. Second rule do not let on yet that we can communicate without the use of computers just yet. The other scientists will just test the others to death and you know it." She nodded and stood turning and leaving his cage for the night.
The next day Sarah got dressed grabbed her morning coffee and jumped into her small commuter car. She took a deep breath as she turned the key and put it into drive heading off to the facility. As she drove she had thought back over what she had done and what she was risking but then on the other hand of all the humans on earth she was the only one breathing that knew humans were now not the only intelligent life. She pulled into the facility found her parking spot and turned the engine off. Opened the door and walked in like she had so many times before then walked to the security desk to get her pass. The man behind the desk smiled as he watched her approach and turned finding her pass then spinning back around to hand it to her. "There ya go dr. Estilo I hear today is a big day something about one of the animals talking or something like that. Personally I think this whole project is bull shit if you ask me but it pays well so who am I to argue?" She forced a smile listening to him "well if we are wrong I will personally pay you a year's salary extra ok?" The man laughed and went back to watching the monitors, then she turned and walked down the hall to the elevator.
She went to the predator floor, then to Grey's cage with her note book in hand and looking very professional. Speaking to the wolf though the mind link she had a few instructions for him " listen they will be here soon to move you to your new enclosure and it is not like they are just gonna open the cage and let you walk to the new area. They will shoot you with a tranquilizer but you have to trust me that they will not hurt you I will not hurt you ok?" Grey had been laying at the back corner of the cage and nodded as he watched the morning sun creep over the hillside. He felt that this was the only thing that had kept him sane all these months and not crack like the others had. "I trust you Sarah I just want to feel earth under my paws." She nodded and pulled out her cell phone calling security so that they may begin.
Chapter eight
Half way house
It was dusk when grey came too. The sun had almost set as he stumbled to his feet still groggy from the affects of the drugs. "Damn I don't think I will ever get used to that feeling" he stumbled to his shaky paws when a voice came to him, it was Sarah. "Grey take it easy it was a long trip so they had to use a stronger dose than normal. This is the best I could do for you so now it is up to you. Because you had requested that only I am the one you want contact with I have a small house on the grounds. Here it is just you and me, I promise I will even be the one that feeds you." She became a bit light headed at the thought of handling meat but knew that it was for a better good.
His yellow eyes focused more and his nose sniffed the air. It was greeted by the sweet smell of pine trees, and moss. His claws dug into the naked earth for the first time in nearly a year, and felt much more at peace. Speaking to her mentally he noticed the feeling of the metallic electrode was back in his head and looked to her. She stammered "I know I know it has to be done this way we do not yet have a way to record our mental thoughts back and forth and I doubt they would believe me if I told them. So for now you will have to speak through the equipment ok? He smirked as the speaker cracked to life "I wish to eat."
Sarah rolled her eyes and fed the wolf sitting by the edge of the cage watching feeling sick to her stomach. He watched her with a yellow eye as he sank his fangs into the meat "May I ask you why you find eating meat so revolting? Do you humans not have K9 teeth to eat meat with?" She stood watching him and shook her head "it is disgusting to eat another animal." "Ah my dear you are wrong what is disgusting is the fact that you humans have forgotten how to gather your own food and kill your own prey. You have done this for so long and have become so disconnected that if you were to do something as simple as drink water from a mountain stream you would more than likely become ill. Your kind became so disconnected from the other animals that you had to create all these ideals, rules, and taboos to the point that if one steps out of line he or she is looked upon as insane. Your race has become so disconnected that if you threw away everything you possessed you would surely die within a few days." He chuckled as the speaker continued to crackle away " you humans even went so far as to loose your fur only to create fake fur that you put on and those who wish not to wear these silly things are thought of as odd."
She wrote in her notebook and looked to him smirking meeting his mind rather than speaking " I have taken the liberty of taping you pacing and have put the video on a 11 ½ hour loop so if you would allow me I would like to come into the enclosure with you grey..... I trust you if you will trust me. He nodded and she opened the cage closing it behind her. He knew it would do no good trying to run away and why try right now he had no clue where he was other than a big doggy pen somewhere in the woods. "Sarah sometimes I think I have you figured out then you do something that surprises me." She waved her arms to remind him that he was being heard but that as far as the other researchers would know only he was in the cage.
This routine went on for months taping his bantering about how fragile and stupid humans were. He said one thing that stuck with her however once that she rushed to her superiors. "We animals have always been able to communicate with one another this is what earth is all about. All are or at least were in harmony living side by side evolving becoming better and better adapted to its environment. Then at some point humans came along and spoke." He turned to her moving to sit beside her looking up at the mid day sun shinning down upon them. "I have always wondered what that first word must have been and I am convinced it was dead. Never have I seen a species who is so hung up on such a thing that would go not only to the point to create some fake religions to pacify and control the masses but that it would drive them to the point of war. Your race is but a flash in the pan and will snuff it's self out I just hope that you do not take the rest of us with you."
He lowered his head looking to her and tiled his head, " I am sorry all I have done is bad mouth your race and that is wrong you have done some wonderful things, made amazing structures, paintings, music, movies ect...." She jumped up and laughed at him "grey how could you possibly know about these things that mankind has created if you were born in the wild and stayed there your whole life?" "Ah simple you know how humans have that thing called.....oh damn it what is it called again? ...... oh yes you humans have that electronic thing called the internet. Well animals have the same sort of thing we all talk to one another constantly, and ironically mostly about your race. Whether it be a pigeon watching a building being constructed, or a mouse sitting in the corner of an art studio we see all.
When the scientists listened to what the wolf said they were floored. They thought it was fake and at first somehow thought Sarah had fabricated this footage. One day a smart scientist smirked "oh fuck just have him send a message to one of the animals here and have it say it, then we will have proof. Sarah listened to them at the board meeting and stood up "are you fucking for real bob? Here we have a living Rosetta stone and you want him to perform stupid pet tricks?" Bob stood and growled "look basically this damn wolf is saying that not only are all animals of at least the same level of intelligence as we are, but that they can all communicate by telepathy." He raised a brow and smirked looking to her "has he done this with you Sarah? Has the wolf known as Grey talked to you without the use of the speaker?" She closed her eyes letting out a breath and a tear rolled down her face "yes." "Fuck I knew it get that beast back in here this is huge I am gonna win the damn noble prize hmmm wonder where he came from maybe if we capture more of the wolves from that area maybe they will talk to each other." She leapt to her feet running at him with a clenched fist and with a growl punched Bob making him fall to the floor. "What the fuck Sarah why did you do that damn crazy bitch." "Look if you want him to continue to tell you what he knows leave his pack alone he wants one of two things. To either be returned to his pack, or to live the rest of his days where he is.....with me. He will only talk to me I don't know why that's just how it is. "Fine we will leave it as it is for now gather data and go play with your wolf. But we need to figure out how they are communicating back and forth."
