Chapter 2 - The Family at the Pier

The night was in full swing when Skye and the others made their way onto the pier, despite their age, a look of boyish enthusiasm spread across their faces, this was their night, a real night, a night of FUN!

"I want some real cotton candy, it's been FOREVER!" Evan shouted looking at the giant stand nearby.

"Sure, let's go!" I said walking with the group up to the man standing at the booth.

"Five please," Lukas said when we walked had all got our cash out.

"Sure, have a nice one guys." The man replied handing the group their food.

It was only as we walked away from the man that I could hear his thoughts, "Nice ass on the blonds."

"Let it slide Skye!" Ryan jabbed me in the ribs.

"Oww," I shouted, slapping his hand away, "I was going to, it's just nice that we can hear their thoughts, imagine all those others." I replied.

"Ignorance is bliss," Lukas countered.

"True enough," I agreed, "Must be nice to be blissfully un-aware."

I froze in my tracks, I'm not sure why, but I found myself glancing at a group of teenagers running back and forth between stands and rides, a little kid in their group, was quickly pulling one of the older boys around by his fingers.

"What's wrong?" Lukas asked me, as he looked across the crowd too.

"I don't know," I replied, "It's that group over there; something feels off about them, they stick out from all of the others, like they belong, but don't belong." I tried to explain.

"I get what you mean, yeah I notice it too, their auras, they're..." Lukas began.

"Their vampires," Josh said, looking at them too.

"How can you tell?" Evan asked.

"I can feel it, the way my extra mixes with theirs... their like us, a family, strong... powerful." Josh replied.

"We should meet them, maybe they know more about this 'virus' than we do?" Lukas suggested.

"I think, we should move on, before they see..." I froze, they had spotted us, all of them looked in our direction.

"Their not hostile," I reported, "They're confused they can sense were not average, 'half-bloods' as they call it.

"What's a half blood?" Lukas asked.

"Don't know but we should move before..." I started, before I could finish, a group of older men walked into us.

"Excuse us, but we couldn't help notice that you guys looks 'new' here, and we'd like to welcome you to our little hang out." The leader said.

"You guys sense that right, they're not here to be friendly." Skye thought to them.

"Uhm, actually we're a little busy, we need to be going..." I started.

"Well, boys, looks like these little half-bloods, wanna start something, shall we teach them a lesson?" the leader replied.

"Look Luke, we're not looking for a fight." I spat.

"How do you know my name? You've got some power and nerve reading my mind." Luke boomed.

"I also have family here that has a lot more power than you, so back off!" I shouted.

"Get them!" Luke shouted. "Drain em when you're done, maybe that spunk will rub off on us in their blood."

"Like that's going to happen!" Lukas shouted, his hands erupting into a blue flame.

"Ohh look at the pretty flames!" Luke mocked, as he grabbed Lukas by the shirt and threw him backwards faster than any of the boys had predicted, clearly his extra was speed.

"Let's go!" I shouted, as I grabbed a hold of one of Luke's goons, my fangs dropping as I took the fight to them. My fists became blurs, I couldn't believe how quickly I was adapting my fighting style to this form; the dragon form had been powerful, but this for was quick, agile, and in it's own way, powerful!

Lukas and the others were adapting, Ryan was kicking some serious ass against his target, his fists coated with the golden light and energy were quickly beating down the creep.

"You think, I'm that easy to take out?" Luke asked, as he grabbed my by the collar of my shirt.

"Fuck off!" I shouted as I grabbed his wrists, my hands igniting in my white fire, charring his hands.

"You little prick!" Luke shouted as he used his speed to knock my feet out from under me and delivering a few quick jabs to my ribs, and a kick to my gut.

"Let's get them!" the Luke's other creeps shouted, as they shoved Ryan down one of the flights of stairs to the subway.

"Get them out of sight, then drain them!" Luke shouted.

As the boys found themselves at the bottom of the stairs a second later they looked at one of the vampires in confusion.

"He's a teleporter!" Josh shouted, "short range, only can move us small distances."

"Shut him down!" I shouted back.

"Okay, but I'm not good enough yet to shut down all of them, just him." Josh thought.

"No worries, it's good enough!" I shouted back, dodging another light speed fist from Luke.

"What are you talking about?" Luke demanded.

"Boss, I can't teleport!" the man shouted as he took a hit to the face from Josh.

"What the hell? What's going on?" Luke demanded.

"I told you not to get in our way!" I shouted.

I took a few more swings, a couple hitting Luke directly, but then out of no where, I felt my body go numb, something or someone was getting to me.

"Good back-ups here!" Luke laughed as four more men walked into the tunnel.

"You didn't tell us they were this cute Luke!" the man shouted.

"Paralyzing these angels, somehow doesn't feel right." He laughed.

"Jim, you can enjoy later, right now, we have a fight to win." Luke shouted.

"I can't move!" Lukas thought, his thought's quickly being second and third and forth by the others.

As the boys fell to their knees, the men walked up closer to them. "Too easy!" Luke laughed as his fangs dropped, "draining you guys will be fun, you should have asked for help from those other vamps down the path, they would have been tough if they were with you guys.

Luke leaned in close, his fangs sliding across my neck as his let his tongue slide across my bare skin.

"You son of a bitch!" I shouted.

"Now, now, where are your manors?" Luke taunted as he punched me in the face, a small trickle of blood running from my nose.

Luke wiped the blood with his thumb, before obscenely licking it off his fingers.

"That has to be the best blood ive ever tasted!" he laughed.

I closed my eyes, awaiting the fangs to return to my neck, but instead there was a snapping sound. As I opened my eyes I looked face to face with Luke, his neck sideways, clearly broken.

As his body collapsed to the ground I saw the others quickly following, behind them was three members of that same group of vampires we had seen before.

The one in front of me reached a hand out to me, his blond hair sliding into his eyes as he helped me up, he looked about 14.

"Thanks!" I said, looking at him, his blond hair fell into his eyes, just right, his eyes shined with passion he was happy, content, in love... and he was cute.

"No problem I..." the boy started but before he could finish, I had firmly smashed the teleporter in the face with my own. Then quickly I let a burst of fire cover his body, burning him charcoal. As his hand dropped to his side a small silver shiv slipped from his hands, he was going to puncture the blond boys heart.

"We're even I guess." The boy replied, "My names Justin."

"Skye," I said shaking his hand, "Pleased to meet you!"

"This is Rain, Dion, and Taryn," Justin indicated the boys behind the rest of the corpses.

"Thanks, but how did you... you know... know?"

"Well, you guys didn't exactly blend in, and groups a large as ours aren't that common in Chicago, we knew you meant business." Tayrn replied.

"We're not here for business, we're just, looking to fit in, for once, and learn more about what we've become." I said.

"Wait, how long have you been in darkness?" Dion asked.

"If you mean, a vampire, I guess about a month." Lucas replied.

"We got bitten by some teens on another..." Evan started before Ryan stepped on his foot.

"Okay, well... I won't ask what you were saying." Dion laughed.

"So you guys are new to the area huh?" Taryn asked.

"Yeah, why?" I asked.

"Come with us, we can show you the ropes, help you avoid anymore of 'those' types," He gestured to the body below us.

"He'll be okay, just give him a few sleep cycles, we can ask him about it later." Dion laughed.

"Okay sure let's go!" Ryan smiled.

They left the subway station following their new 'friends' watching the crowds pass, the people not even seeming to notice the boys slipping through the crowds.

"Why do people look like they don't even see us?" Josh asked.

"It's because they are so closed up in their own lives, they can't even see the people beyond their world, they don't see the people who are free of their society." Justin replied, "Or at least that's what Taryn told me when I crossed into darkness!" he laughed, before kissing his boyfriend.

"So where do you guys live?" Evan asked.

"We could show you?" Rain said, but it's not much.

"We're in a warehouse, so it's gotta be good!" Lukas replied.

"Okay, ours is in a junk yard... well a wrecking yard for cars." Rain almost sneered.

"That's not an issue." Ryan countered, "home isn't just where you rest your head."

"That's rather deep," Dion paused, "It sounds like you've been through a lot."

"More than you could ever know," I replied, before doing something I couldn't fathom doing a few hours earlier, I grasped Lukas hand in mine and drew him close.

_"That's a first,"_Lukas thought to me.

"What can I say; you make me feel so... complete." I replied.

_"Thanks,"_Lukas replied a huge grin spreading across his face.

A few blocks later and one quick subway ride...

"Well, here we are... home sweet yard!" Tayrn shouted spreading his arms to the sky, clearly sarcastic.

"Bryson probably won't..." Justin was cut off when an older teen walked out from behind a car, he looked pretty hansom, but clearly a strong fighter and...

"Who are these guys?" he asked.

"Bryson," Rain began.

"They're another family we met at the pier, we started talking and..."

"Tayrn, what did I tell you about bringing home strays," he thought using part of Tayrn's extra, sending messages through thought.

"Umm, not to be rude Bryson," I spoke up, "But we're not strays... we have a home, and we were just exploring the pier when we were attacked, your family kinda saved us some issues."

Bryson looked clearly taken aback, "You can read minds?" he said flatly.

"Well we all can," Lukas chirped in.

"You didn't say that part," Dion gasped.

"Well it's not that strange for us, I mean we can talk or think, what we want others to hear, it works pretty good when you're fighting Dracon..." Lukas stopped when I shot him a quick look.

"Fighting what?" Bryson asked clearly confused.

"We've been through a lot, we had a few encounters, fights, and we took care of those issues when they arose." I tried.

"What else can you do?" Rain asked.

"Well we have set extras," Evan explained, "Skye and Ryan on the other hand, theirs seem to keep changing with people we meet, the fights make them stronger."

"We're not this mimic you're thinking of though!" I said, then froze when they all stared at me.

"How do you know?" Taryn started.

"Look, I can tell Justin here has a lot more extras packed in his blonde head to kill a thousand vampires, but have elements were set into, we can't just gain a new ability as freely as he can." I explained.

"Get Justin behind me!" Bryson spat.

"Look we're not here to cause trouble, we're trying to figure out how to live like you guys do, I mean up until... like a day ago we all enjoyed real food, the only time we wanted blood was when the lust hit us." Ryan said.

"So you guys are new into darkness?" Dion asked.

"Yeah, I mean we were turned a few weeks ago, but only chose to keep the forms like a day ago." Josh said.

"Chose? You don't choose this!" Tayrn said flatly.

"Well, I mean we were bit, in a fight, so we didn't chose, but this form suits us better than the drag..." Josh started.

"Dragon? Are you guys for real?" it was Bryson's turn to be mad.

"Look, our extras are a little different from yours, the only thing we've gained by becoming vampires is the blood and fangs thing." I explained.

"So what's that mean, you're humans and Vampires?" Tayrn asked.

"Well not exactly, we're not human anymore, but the sun probably wont kill us... I hope." I replied.

"Well super heroes or not I don't recommend that you test that theory," Bryson replied.

"So Tayrn, what do you guys do for fun?" Josh chirped, changing the subject.

"Uh," Tayrn replied a little off guard, "We go wander around town, try not to get mauled by hunters and..." he trailed off.

"Well, well what have we got here?" an older teen walked up.

"They're not interested in your products Jeremy." Dion said flatly.

"How did you know I was going to say anything about that.... though it's a good idea..." Jeremy countered.

"Thanks but no thanks Jeremy, we're good without the blood, we can get out own the good old fashion way..." I replied.

"How'd you know what I was going to say?" Jeremy snapped, confused.

I tapped my temple with one hand and then pointed to him, "I've got my ways."

"You can read minds? Even Vampires minds?" Jeremy asked.

"Sure, let's go with that," Lukas replied with a killer smile.

"Well guys, I hate to be the one to ruin the party, but it's almost dawn we should get locked in for the night." Bryson said pointing to the East, where the sky was beginning to get brighter.

"Sure, we should get going too I suppose!" I replied, "Listen, here's our address, stop in some time." I said handing them a small piece of paper.

"Sure, well catch up soon!" Justin smiled, hugging Tayrn close.

"If you guys ever need us, well be there!" Evan said before turning away.

"Same here, let's hope it doesn't come down to that though, okay?" Bryson laughed.

"Fine!" Tayrn replied, laughing.

As we walked home... well ran home, I did some thinking, I couldn't help it. "Do I really want this life? A life in darkness, or should I got back to the way I know life, running for it and fighting everything in sight? Is the cost of staying here really worth all the trouble I'm putting the other guys through? Or Am I just being selfish, I really don't know what to do."Frustration building in me as I went through all these mixed feelings.

Just as I was about say something, Lukas slipped under my arm, wrapping his body into mine, and at once I could feel my frustration and emotions vanish, he was pulling my anxiety out and replacing it with a feeling of utter calm, and I loved it. He truly did understand me; just when I thought that I had figured him out, he surprises me with being deeper than I could hoped for. For a kid whose gone through so much, he really doesn't show it.
