Pokemon - To Catch Them All - Heading to Hoenn
#34 of Pokemon - To Catch Them All
Leo starts exploring the Hoenn region meeting new Pokemon he hasn't seen before.
I awoke early the next morning and headed downstairs and got some breakfast before making sure that I got enough food for all my Pokemon. I handed out their breakfast and they all thanked me for the food. At that my mother descended downstairs and watched me as I fed each and every Pokemon. "So, now that your done with Johto, what is next for you?" I pondered that curiously before I made up my mind. "I'll head to Hoenn, there's lots of new Pokemon that I haven't caught there yet." Mother knew that was my plan already and presented me with some clothes that she had already cleaned up. I thanked my mother before getting an online ticket for the Hoenn region and a plane would be able to get me in Hoenn in just a few hours.
I also decided to give Professor Oak a call and inform him of the progress on my Pokedex and perhaps the legends I'd briefly met in Johto. "Leo my boy, it's been quite some time since we last spoke. I believe you mentioned last time you would be travelling through Johto. How did that go for you?" The professor sounded very invested a sign that he knew something had happened. "Professor I caught lots of Johto Pokemon but I also encountered Raikou, Entei and Suicune, albeit for a very short time." That sure got Professor Oak's attention. "Now that sounds like a adventure, but catching so many Johto Pokemon is a step forward in getting closer to your dream isn't it. So what's next for you." I then mentioned my next plan, "I've decided that I'll go to Hoenn and try and catch every Pokemon I can there." Professor Oak sounded even more happy now, "Ah, Hoenn a lovely region it is. You'll definitely find lots of Pokemon you can't catch in Johto or Kanto for that matter. When you arrive, why not visit Professor Birch, he's the renowned Professor there and can help you if you need anything." I thanked the Professor before I ended the call happy to hear from him once again.
At that I returned to all my Pokemon and announced I would be heading to Hoenn, everyone of my Pokemon bombarded me with hugs and likely wishing me a safe and fun journey. I would return hopefully soon and have so many new friends to show them. Before leaving, I spoke to my mother, "I'll be sure to give you a call when I reach Hoenn." My mother nodded happy that I was keeping her informed. At that I headed to the airport and was soon on the plane to Hoenn. While on the plane I did some research on the Hoenn region itself. The regions professor of note was Professor Birch and he specialised in Pokemon habitats and distribution of Pokemon. In Hoenn, he presented trainers with the usual, Grass, Fire or Water starter and they were, Treecko, Torchic and Mudkip respectively. I also researched the legends of Hoenn curious as to the differences between Kanto, Johto and Hoenn.
Hoenn actually had a lot of legends, there were the embodiment of the sea being Kyogre and the embodiment of land being Groudon. These Pokemon were said to be ancient rivals with one another and fought consistently through time. The only one who was able to stop the two legends from destroying everything was Rayquaza the embodiment of the sky. Not too mention that their were ruins that were scattered around the Hoenn region and in those ruins, it is said that people could find the golems, Regirock, Regice and Registeel. Those golems were said to have been created by Regigigas a Pokemon that apparently towed the continents that made Hoenn. I read about the Eon Pokemon Latias and Latios, these Pokemon were unique and extremely fast, said to be able to fly faster than a plane. They were also believed to be extremely intelligent and able to understand human speech.
I also researched about other Pokemon that were considered mythical because of their rarity, there was Jirachi said only to appear seven days every thousand years. Finding a Jirachi would be almost impossible, but I know I would never give up on my dream of catching every Pokemon. I was also interested in the DNA Pokemon Deoxys, said to have come from space, in some instances where it had been seen, it was fighting Rayquaza as the two seemed to be rivals in some capacity. What really interested me, was how Deoxys seemed to be able to change its shape and appearance. Some believed that Deoxys used meteorites to do this but some had witnessed Deoxys doing this on its own power. Researchers therefore could never conclude a solid answer.
Speaking more of Hoenn's unique geography, I had wondered just how dangerous the Hoenn regions geography was and noted the different environments that all centred around Hoenn. First there was rainforests and deserts. But most notable would be the fact that Hoenn was almost entirely made up of the sea. Hoenn almost seemed to have a much warmer climate than most other regions, probably because of the volcanic activity the region possessed. Hoenn was really interesting and I was looking forward the meeting the diverse Pokemon that made Hoenn there home. I also knew that in order to explore the entirety of Hoenn effectively, I'd need a Flying Type and a strong Water Type. Not too mention a way in order to see the Pokemon that were said to live beneath the open ocean in Hoenn, such as the intriguing Relicanth a Pokemon said to be a living fossil based on its ancient appearance.
After researching for Hoenn on my Rotom phone for what feeled like hours, understanding the diversity and legends of Hoenn, I looked out of the window and saw the signs that we must be close to landing based on the Pokemon that were in the ocean. I saw a Wailord pod breeching together, which was a wonderful sight and a great start to my journey. The plane would be landing in Littleroot Town, where Professor Birch had his laboratory. When the plane eventually landed I exited the plane and took in the new sights of Littleroot Town and Hoenn as a whole. The sun was shining and it was warmer than the previous regions I had explored. I could see Taillow flying through the air and I wondered what else lied beyond this small town. Eventually I came across the Pokemon laboratory and entered seeing researchers doing lots of work about who knows what. I looked around before I was greeted by a man who seemed to be in charge.
"Welcome to my laboratory, my name is Professor Birch, it's wonderful to meet you." At that Birch seemed to observe me closely before he came to an epiphany. "Might you be Leo, from Viridian City?" I nodded my head confirming I was Leo and Professor Birch was even more impressed now. "Professor Oak and Birch had recently been in contact with me informing me you would be here to catch every Hoenn Pokemon you could am I right?" I nodded again and he clapped his hands, "an impressive goal you've got there. If you need any help while travelling through Hoenn, please give me a call and I'll do my best to help you however I can." At that I left the laboratory and began heading north past Littleroot to the first route of Hoenn where I could find my first Hoenn catch.
Before I had left Kanto, I had brought with me a single Pokemon to help me with my first catch in Hoenn and that Pokemon was my Pikachu, I knew he was strong enough to handle any Pokemon so there wouldn't be any problems with power levels. At that I headed on in and came across the first new Pokemon of Hoenn and it was a cute and fast Zigzagoon. "Pikachu use Thunderbolt but only enough to weaken it!" I knew Pikachu was much stronger and could easily hurt the Zigzagoon more than was necessary. I threw a Pokeball at the shocked Zigzagoon and watched as it shook once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed. "Zigzagoon has been registered to your Pokedex. Zigzagoon the TinyRaccoon Pokemon a Normal Type. It walks in a zig zag fashion. Its good at finding items in the grass and even in the ground." At that I thanked Pikachu and he was happy to return back to Kanto happy that he knew his trainer was already getting on with his catches in Hoenn.
I released Zigzagoon and healed him up introducing myself, "my name is Leo and I'm from Kanto, it's nice to meet you Zigzagoon!" Zigzagoon seemed happy to have a trainer, especially if they ended up being as kind as this one was. "It's my dream to catch every Pokemon and complete the Pokedex one day. Would you help me with that dream?" Zigzagoon eagerly accepted running around my legs before he darted off into the grass ready to battle his first opponent. Zigzagoon exited the grass with a Poochyena in toe that growled in annoyance at the Zigzagoon.
"Rotom what moves does Zigzagoon know?" I asked and Rotom informed me that Zigzagoon knew the moves, Tackle, Sand Attack, Tail Whip and Headbutt, some pretty decent moves for a first catch. "Zgizagoon use Headbutt!" Zigzagoon darted towards Poochyena ramming his head into Poochyena who tried to recover and attacked using Bite. "Zigzagoon dodge that and use Tackle!" Zigzagoon zigzagged around Poochyena dodging the bite before using an impressive Tackle defeating Poochyena. "Pokeball go!" I threw a Pokeball and watched as the Pokeball shook once, twice, three times before the catch was confirmed. "Poochyena has been registered to your Pokedex. Poochyena the Bite Pokemon a Dark Type. A Pokemon with a persistant nature, it chases its chosen prey until the prey becomes exhausted." I released Poochyena, healing him and watching as him and Zigzagoon seemed to make fast friends as they chased each other around.
They chased each other into the grass and out come two very disorientated Wurmple who simultaneously used String Shot trying to trap Zigzagoon and Poochyena but both Pokemon dodged around the silk. "Poochyena use Bite and Zigzagoon use Headbutt!" Both Pokemon attacked and weakened the Wurmple allowing me to throw two Pokeballs at the Wurmple's. I watched as both Pokeball's shook, once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed. "Wurmple has been registered to your Pokedex. Wurmple the Worm Pokemon a Bug Type. It spits a white silk thread that turns sticky when coming into contact with air. The silk is used to immobilise foes." Both Wurmple were healed up and Poochyena and Zigzagoon apologised for running into them in the first place but their apologies were accepted.
The team was already looking quite good and I began doing some quick training with everyone, getting them much stronger and was happily surprised when my two Wurmple already began evolving. I'd barely spent much time with them and was already seeing them evolve. "Silcoon has been registered to your Pokedex. Silcoon the Cocoon Pokemon a Bug Type. It drinks dew that collects on its silk while it waits for evolution. Its hard cocoon repels attacks." Silcoon was the first but I was surprised when my other Wurmple evolved into a Cascoon and not a Silcoon. "Cascoon has been registered to your Pokedex. Cascoon the Cocoon Pokemon a Bug Type. Encased within its tough cocoon, it endures attacks. It never forgets the appearance of its foes."
I was happy that Silcoon and Cascoon evolved already and Zigzagoon and Poochyena seemed happy as well. After that I headed north and reached Oldale Town a small unassuming town, but was still quite nice and lively. I had my Pokemon healed at the Pokemon centre and decided to head north once again and reached Route 103 and began searching for new Pokemon. Eventually I came across the new Pokemon and it was a Wingull and I sent out Poochyena for a battle. "Poochyena use Bite!" Poochyena snuck up on Wingull and landed a powerful Bite but Wingull shook Poochyena off and glared in annoyance. Wingull fired back with Quick Attack but Poochyena just barely managed to dodge but only barely. "Poochyena use Sand Attack!" Poochyena swirled up sand blinding Wingull before rushing in for another Bite which weakened Wingull for me to throw a Pokeball.
I watched as the Pokeball shook once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed. "Wingull has been registered to your Pokedex. Wingull the Seagull Pokemon a Water and Flying Type. Catching sea wings with its long wings, it soars as if it were a glider. It folds its wings to rest." Wingull was healed up and happily landed on my shoulder and introduced himself to my other Pokemon. At that I looked around some more noticing a lake that could be traversed but at the moment I didn't have a Water Pokemon to help me across so for now I'd return back down to Oldale Town.
It was a quick return to Oldale Town and I healed up my Pokemon and brought some more Pokeballs before heading West and reached Route 102. My Rotom Phone showed me that here I could catch Ralts a rare Psychic and Fairy Type, Surskit a Bug and Water Type, Seedot a Grass Type and finally Lotad a Water and Grass Type. They would all be great catches to add to my team and so I began searching through the grass and quickly found the first Pokemon I could catch.
A Surskit crawled through the grass and seemed startled by my presence before preparing itself for a battle. "Come out Wingull!" Wingull had the advantage of type and hopefully that would be enough to catch the Surskit. "Wingull use Sand Attack!" Wingull flapped his wings into the ground forcefully sending a pile of sand directly into Surskit's eyes blinding the Pokemon and creating an opportunity. "Now use Wing Attack!" Wingull flew low to the ground before slamming his wings into the shocked Surskit. "Pokeball go!" I threw the Pokeball and watched as it shook once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed. "Surskit has been registered to your Pokedex. Surskit the Pond Skater Pokemon a Bug and Water Type. It appears as though it is skating on water. It draws prey in with a sweet scent released from the tip of its head."
I didn't have to wait long to find the next Pokemon as a Seedot hopped down from a nearby tree observing me curiously. "A Seedot huh? Come out once more Wingull!" Wingull appeared ready for another battle against a Grass Type. "Use Wing Attack!" Wingull flew low to the ground before bashing right into Seedot. The super effective move seemed to weaken Seedot enough for me to catch it. I threw a Pokeball and watched as it shook once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed. "Seedot has been registered to your Pokedex. Seedot the Acorn Pokemon a Grass Type. When it dangles from a tree branch, it looks just like an acorn. It enjoys scaring other Pokemon that try to peck at it."
Continuing along the route I kept an eye and ear out for the remaining Pokemon but hadn't expected to spot a rare Mudkip swimming through a small nearby lake. The Mudkip didn't seem to be very happy either, judging by its facial expression. Not only that but the Mudkip seemed rather disheartened and nervous and upon spotting me it looked shocked and began retreating under the small lake. I looked around curious wondering whether something other than me had startled the Pokemon but it seemed as though I had unwittingly startled the Pokemon.
I approached the lake cautiously extending my hands to the nervous Pokemon, showing the Mudkip that I was unarmed and only wanted to help the Pokemon as it appeared slightly injured and exhausted. At that moment I began putting the pieces together. Mudkip was nervous and perhaps even slightly scared of humans perhaps it had been abandoned by a trainer and left to fend for itself. That might be how the Pokemon had acquired its injuries.
When handling a Pokemon that distrusts humans because of someones selfish actions, I believe we should take actions carefully slowly and at the Pokemon's speed. I also sent out my Pokemon to help show the wild Mudkip that I wasn't going to hurt it, only heal it. Even the newly caught, Seedot and Surskit approached the Mudkip and showed them that Leo was a kind hearted trainer who only wanted to make sure that the Mudkip was safe and well.
Thanks to their words of support the Mudkip slowly exited the lake and approached me cautiously I hadn't expected the Mudkip to immediately change its mind and believe that all humans were good. Still it allowed me to spray it with a Potion and get it back to full health. All the while I tried to help make the process as calm and quick as I could to ensure that Mudkip was feeling safe through the process. After the Mudkip was feeling and looking much healthier it seemed to have made a decision on something. The Mudkip then approached me once again and just stood there observing me curiously.
I wasn't sure what the Pokemon wanted until my other Pokemon helped translate that the Mudkip wanted to be caught. I wasn't absolutely sure but when I showed the Mudkip a Pokeball the Mudkip tapped the Pokeball and entered voluntarily. "Mudkip has been registered to your Pokedex. Mudkip the Mud Fish Pokemon a Water Type. Using the fin on its head, Mudkip senses the flow of water to keep track of what's going on around it. Mudkip has the strength to heft boulders."
I released Mudkip and began travelling through the route together with Mudkip to help create a bond between the still nervous and unsure Pokemon. I knew that Mudkip just needed some time to adjust and perhaps with that time he would be able to grow into a Pokemon that could make his former trainer realise what a foolish decision they had made. At that I explored the route and came across a Pokemon I had been searching for and it was a Ralts and apparently it had been observing me and the Mudkip for quite some time.
It also appeared as though the Ralts wasn't alone as a second teleported over and the two observed me wondering whether this trainer was worthy of owning them. The two Ralts communicated with one another before they both turned to me gesturing that they two wanted to join me. I threw two Pokeballs and the Ralts also entered them voluntarily. "Ralts has been registered to your Pokedex. Ralts the Feeling Pokemon a Psychic and Fairy Type. It uses the horns on its head to sense human emotions. It is said to appear in front of cheerful people."
I looked over the two Ralts and learned that they were both male and judging on their body language to one another they both seemed to be brothers. They confirmed this when I asked them curiously. It was very convenient for me to have two Ralts simply because one could evolve into a Gardevoir and the other could become a Gallade. The final Pokemon I found was a Lotad that popped out of the grass and one of my Ralts decided to have a go at the Lotad.
"Ralts use Confusion!" Ralts Confusion wasn't incredibly strong but it was good enough to confuse the Lotad in its tracks. "Now use Disarming Voice!" Ralts screeched softly sending a wave at Lotad who braced but the confusion causing Lotad to cause even more damage to itself it the process. "Pokeball go!" I threw the Pokeball and watched as it shook once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed. "Lotad has been registered to your Pokdex. Lotad the Water Weed Pokemon a Water and Grass Type. It looks like an aquatic plant and serves as a ferry for Pokemon that can't swim."
Lotad quickly introduced himself to my Mudkip who seemed a little shy around the newcomer but still greeted him warmly. At that I had caught all the available Pokemon and continued heading west before being challenged by a Youngster who sent out a Zigzagoon and I sent out my own Zigzagoon mine proved to be faster and stronger winning with Quick Attack. A Bug Catcher then challenged me with a Wurmple and I sent out Wingull who used Wing Attack defeating Wurmple.
Another Youngster then challenged me with a Poochyena and I sent out my Ralts, I decided to refer to them as the younger Ralts and older Ralts for convenience. The older Ralts was my choice and a single Disarming Voice was strong enough to defeat the Poochyena. Next was a Taillow and I substituted for my Mudkip to see how good of a team we were at the moment. Mudkip followed my commands flawlessly and seemed to go through a complete personality change. He wasn't a shy adorable and quiet Mudkip anymore. In battle he was strong and very capable, his Water Gun easily defeated Taillow without much effort. The final opponent was a Lass who sent out a Zigzagoon and I sent out my Poochyena having him use Bite defeating Zigzagoon. At that I reached Petalburg City where I would continue my journey.
