GD: Skyrim Part II Finding Work
#3 of Gamer Diaries: Skyrim
Hello all and happy Friday! Another quick short detailing the adventures of Espiona and her adventures of Skyrim. After a rough start, she gets a lead on a very profitable venture--assuming she can survive her first day of college.
The pacing is going to pick up a bit more in future posts. The goal is to write about one dungeon or quest per post to keep things interesting. But right now, I don't want to jump around a lot for story reasons. Try and keep things organized.
Happy reading.
Part II: Finding Work
I had a dream. More like a nightmare. I dreamt I stood in a city I didn't recognize. It looked like any other city, but none of it felt familiar. The town was my least worry as the city was on fire. Bodies filled the streets. In the middle of the blaze stood a massive black dragon. I had never seen one before. Its body blocked out the sun and the light of the flames. The smoke swirled around it, clawing at the burned husks of a building and the corpses around it. The dragon stared gleefully as it inhaled and drew in the smoke.
I never felt so powerless. I couldn't draw my weapon, couldn't run away, couldn't even turn my head. The dragon held me fixed in its gaze as it swallowed everything around it, almost as if it were daring me to stop it.
I woke up, tangled up in my blanket and cold sweat--a surprising feat with the snow swirling outside. With as quiet as the place was, no way they didn't hear me if I was screaming.
Whether they did or didn't, it wasn't brought up and I was happy to leave it alone.
The last thing I wanted was to be stuck in the frozen north of Skyrim so I immediately set out to get to work. Dagur said if I helped out his wife for the day, we would be square for the food and board. Seemed a fair trade and a far better one than what I feared he would propose. I once met a Breton running a hotel only to find out he was feeding the tenets to his troll god so he could live forever. Too bad for him, trolls are very combustible.
Haran didn't have much for me to do. We checked inventory, did some sweeping, washed some dishes but it was obvious she spent most of her time bored with how few customers came through. She admitted that most of their business came from the college or people looking to join the college. I also learned that everyone blamed the college and magic for the great collapse that took most of the city into the sea. I found it ironic that the place everyone blamed for their destruction was the only thing keeping the city alive now. Ironic and sad.
After I convinced Ranmir to make good on the debt he owed, I was gifted an old war ax and allowed to go on my way. Got a weapon at least.
Before I left, Dagur came to me with a strange proposal, he wanted me to help him snap Dagur out of his rut. The man was drinking himself to death. Honestly, it wasn't my problem but I felt I owed the guy. I learned that Ranmir suffered from a bad breakup. Apparently, his fiancée, Isabelle, left him with no word or explanation. Seemed pretty odd for a man who wasn't inheriting a small kingdom. After some digging Dagur told me the truth. The woman fell in love with some thief named Vex and ran off to the Thieves Guild to be with her.
No wonder the poor bastard was drinking himself into a hole.
But I learned something very helpful. The Thieves Guild had a base in Skyrim. Getting in good with them would see to it I made all the coin I would ever need, so it looked like I was going to Riften.
But first, I had a college to join.
