#9 of Rocky Mountain Times

I have decided to work some more on Rocky Mountain Times for a while. The new section takes place seven months later. It will follow Ryan, who is still single, as the main character. Jen and Sam, who are still together, will be prominent as well though so don't fret. As I have previously stated, though sex may be included in my story, I will not exploit my characters with any explicit descriptions so if that's what you're looking for you'll have to try elsewhere. As always, I'd like to give a shout out to my most dedicated watchers who have been around since I wrote the first chapters of Rocky Mountain Times. Eveser , Foxmoulder992 , Averis , and Dasher Cheetah ; I love you guys! I would also like to recognize my all time favorite critic j ocelot whose input has greatly affected my writing. And last but not least I could never forget imarocketman and his fan girls <3! Anyway, enjoy =3

Ryan sat in his leather armchair in the living room staring out the window. It was a spacious room. A vaulted ceiling angled upwards to include the loft which overlooked the space. It was joined in an open layout with the dining area and kitchen. A gas fireplace burned in the corner and a large plasma screen television hung on the wall to his left. The wall in front of him was mostly all windows looking out across the deck, over the tops of the pines and afforded an excellent view of the town and mountains beyond.

Ryan was a tall, snow white ermine. He had nice features but not what most would call handsome. He was well built with and had a slightly muscular upper body. His legs however were powerful and sculpted from years of skiing and hiking. He worked in Ridge as an architect. It was a job he loved, but winter was his life. He was a three time winner of the Imperial Challenge and still held the record for the Echo Endurance Competition. Ryan was also an armature big mountain fill maker and had three of his movies on the market.

Tonight he watched as the first snow of the season blanketed Ridge in a thick layer of white. The heavy flakes fell slowly and were beginning to build up a substantial accumulation. He sighed deeply in exaltation as the sight filled his eyes. Snow was back in ridge and the ski season would be right around the corner.

"Hey Ryan, can I get you anything else to drink while I'm up?"

He turned so see Samantha in the kitchen where she had been putting away her dishes from dinner. Samantha, who liked to go by Sam, was a blue fox. Her sleek gray fur shined in the strip lighting. She was just over five feet tall and had a very shapely body and probably could have passed off as a model. She kept her blonde hair short though and never liked to wear anything to stylish. Sam was very high spirited and assertive but easy to get along with. She dropped out of culinary school after her father died leaving her a small amount of money and a house in Ridge. Sam moved their and began her life as a baker and pastry cook, which was all she wanted to learn anyway.

"Sure, can you pour me a couple fingers of scotch?"

Sam bent down and stood back up with a bottle of dark liquid and a glass. As she poured the drink, Sam turned to the other person in the room.

"You want anything Jen?"

"Sure, toss me a Heineken."

Jen was lounging on the couch next to Ryan and caught the bottle nimbly as it was underhanded to her. Jen, or Jenifer, was a snow leopard. Long, pale gray fur covered most of her body. Her spots were black as midnight and shimmered with hints of iridescent violet. Her long hair was the same color and her eyes which were dark blue violet reflected the firelight. Jen almost perfectly split the difference in Ryan and Sam's height. She worked out regularly and prided herself on her physical strength which was well disguised beneath the curves of her body.

Jen had left her troubled life in St. Lewis and moved to Ridge when she had found an advertisement by Sam looking for a roommate. There she had begun a new life as a jeweler. Jen and Ryan had dated for a while but she had found that she was in love with Sam. Since then they have been together but her friendship with Ryan never died.

Sam returned to the living room carrying Ryan's drink and a glass of wine. She handed Ryan the scotch and then sat on the couch next to Jen who put her arm around Sam. There was a movie on, but none of them were really paying attention to it. Ryan sipped his drink silently, still gazing at the snow. Sam spoke up.

"Ryan, we need to get you a girl."

"I had one remember. She left me for you."

Jen winked at him. "No hard feelings right. I mean, how could anyone pass up on someone like this?"

Sam laughed.

"You're right though Sam. I've just been busy with work. The county is really booming and we have to keep up or else loose our clients."

It was true. The economy was booming and everyone seemed to want to build more right now. All summer He and Mike had been working round the clock to keep up with the demand. You just didn't say no to someone who wanted you to design for them. They had been able to hire on a couple interns for the summer though which had helped considerably. Now that they were gone, work had gotten a little hectic again.

"I'm hoping that now that summer's over, the number of new buildings will slow down."

"Well, we need to get you out. You're friends with the two best wingmen this side of the Mississippi. You have no excuse for being single."

Ryan grinned at the joke. It was true though. He could never go out to the bars with Jen and Sam without them getting a couple of girls hanging on to him. He had had a couple of small relationships since Jen, but never found what he was looking for. Perhaps with the onset of the ski season and flocks of winter residents, there would be a chance.

"Anything new with you Jen?"

"I just got in a new shipment of gemstones. You can stop by and take a look if you want."

They sat there talking late into the night. Eventually Jen and Sam decided to leave. Ryan watched as their car pulled away and then shut the door.

The snow was still falling heavier than ever. He watched as the outside world turned white. It made the landscape look pure and clean. It was like a fresh canvas waiting to be covered. A new opportunity for life. A new opportunity for love.
