#11 of Rohan's Journey

Sorry about taking forever. This one's a little short, since it's mostly about story progression, but I hope you guys like it anyway. Sorry again about letting you guys down.

Krynn led Rohan out of the cave and into a secluded glade, Kitara followed without a word. The cave was left in deafening silence; all the wolves could sense that something was not right.

Krynn turns to face Rohan, "We're here. What is it you need to talk about?"

"I have a problem. A big one." Rohan said.

"Well what is it?" asked Krynn.

"We don't have a home to go to anymore." Rohan replied.

Krynn was obviously taken aback by this news, "Why not? What happened to hers? Can't you stay there?" Kitara shifted uncomfortably at this and put her arms around Rohan's chest, resting her head against his shoulder.

Rohan shook his head, and his ears fell, "No. I don't know how it happened, but I slaughtered the nearest village. The almost the entire village was killed and all the buildings were burned to the ground. The humans gathered a small army and are searching for demons nearby. We can't stay there." Kitara tightened her hold a little as he said this. For the first time Rohan saw Krynn without words.

When he spoke he was obviously shaken, "It seems that you're being protected from yourself then. I would guess that it's because of that." Krynn looked pointedly at the pendant hanging from Rohan's neck.

Rohan reached a paw up to it, "I forgot about this entirely. What should I do though?"

Krynn looked up at him, "It would be best if you move on. Find a new home for Kitara and you. There are a lot of caves around here."

"Thanks Krynn. I'll try." Rohan said with a weak smile.

"You and your mate are staying here tonight though. After a journey like yours you two need some rest among friends." Krynn said, turning his head as he padded back to the cave.

Rohan smiled for real this time, "Thanks a lot Krynn." He turned around in Kitara's arms so he was facing her and planted a kiss on her muzzle. She was a little surprised, but happily returned his kiss. He smiled and put an arm around her shoulder as they padded back to the cave.

They arrived back at the cave in time to catch the end of Krynn talking, "...them look for a good one." All the wolves barked an affirmative in unison. Kitara and Rohan looked at each other; then changed into wolves at the same time. They bounded forward and each chose a young wolf to tackle. They effectively surprised all the wolves except Krynn, who had seen them enter and had managed to hold back all but the slightest smile. When the wolves recovered they immediately mobbed the two of them. The yips and yowls echoed throughout the cave, and even Krynn joined in.

After a few hours of playing everyone was sufficiently tired. A few of the older wolves, accompanied by two younger ones went in search of food. Rohan and Kitara remained wolves, with Rohan curled up around her. His head rested gently atop hers. When the hunting party returned, they both stood and changed back into demons, stretching as they did so. He picked up the she-wolf and carried her giggling form over to the crowd of wolves around the food. He set her down and they waited their turn. They didn't have to wait long; they were treated as pack elders, eating right after Krynn, and Raistlin. They ate quickly, and returned to their spot at the cave wall. Rohan leaned against the wall of the cave, pulling Kitara into his lap. They both faced out, looking out the cave's entrance, Rohan put his head gently atop hers, his muzzle right down the middle of her head. He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close. She sighed and relaxed into his strong chest.

"I love you Kit." Rohan whispered in her ear.

"I know, I love you too." she said with a smile.

They fell asleep right there, awoken the next morning by Raistlin. Raistlin put his paws on Kitara's shoulders, managing to wake both her and Rohan at the same time.

"Time to get up. You've got a cave to look for, and it wouldn't look good if you weren't looking while the entire wolf pack was." Raistlin said.

"They're WHAT!?" Rohan exclaimed, jumping up, and pulling Kitara with him, although not exactly on purpose.

Rohan looked at Kitara "Sorry, Kit. Didn't mean to do that."

"It's okay, Rohan." she said, pulling him into a kiss, "Now, let's go look for a cave." With that they padded out of the cave, jumping into the trees and heading in a random direction.

After a few hours, as it was nearing noon, they heard frantic howls. The howls were not excited, but afraid and sad. Without a word, Rohan, Kitara, and Raistlin bounded towards them. In about 10 minutes, they arrived, right before the rest of the wolves.

"What happened?" Rohan panted, paws on his knees, to one of the wolves whom had howled.

The wolf padded back and forth uncomfortably, "Caramon went in there, and then it...it..." Rohan looked up, to see a pile of rubble.

He stood up, and padded forward, "Get back." The wolves looked among themselves, not moving. "Get back!" He barked again. The wolves cringed and stepped back. Rohan stretched out with his magic, carefully pulling the rubble from the entrance, as he did he the wolves behind him started whining softly, unsure of what to make of his actions. Rohan soon cleared the cave's entrance, and padded inside.

He found Caramon cowering in the back of the cave, a considerable distance from the entrance, "Caramon, it's me, Rohan."

Caramon jumped at Rohan and licked at his face affectionately, "How'd you do that?" he asked.

"Something I learned while I was gone." Rohan replied, "Let's go outside." Caramon cautiously padded outside, staying right next to Rohan's leg the entire time. When they passed through the entrance Caramon brightened up, and greeting the wolves with excited licks; Rohan, however, was greeted similarly, and although they still offered him the same respect as before, it was more genuine now, not simply because Krynn called for it. Rohan looked back at the cave thoughtfully, and padded back over to it, placing a paw on the rocky entrance. He felt around the rocks with magic, and shifted them a little to relieve the pressure on them. As he did, cracking, groaning and other ominous sounds echoed out of the cave, and the wolves backed away. Rohan finished with the cave and stepped back "I think we've found a home."

Kitara padded over to him, putting a paw on his shoulder. She looked up at the face of her mate, he was smiling down at her, like always.

"Are you sure? It just caved in, it probably isn't safe." Kitara asked, worry in her voice.

Rohan looked confident, and sounded it too, "I'm sure, I just relieved the stress on the rocks; it's probably one of the safest caves around here now."

"Okay." Kitara said, obviously not too convinced. She took a hesitant step into the cave, looking like she expected the roof to fall at any second. He put a reassuring paw on her shoulder, and she turned to see his ever-smiling eyes.

Her thoughts returned, unbidden, to that night, when she had an arrow in her shoulder, and his eyes had not been smiling. She wondered 'How? How could they be the same person? She'd seen him mad before, but she could always see love in his eyes. Except then, then they had held nothing but anger. How could those eyes belong to the same one who loved to play with the children of the wolves? How could they belong to the man who came back so disgusted after merely scaring a human? How could that same man slaughter a whole village without a thought? How could they be the same man? How!?' All these thoughts passed in an instant, and the only sign of their passing was her eyes dropping briefly.

"It's safe Kitara, I promise." Rohan said, squeezing her shoulder a little. She smiled up at him, and continued with confidence. She thoroughly examined the cave, and seemed impressed.

Rohan could tell that she was still a little skeptical, "Kitara, come here, let me show you it's safe."

Kitara padded over, "How are you going to though?"

"You can control Earth can't you?" He asked with a laugh.

She smiled sheepishly "Oh yeah." He took her paw in his and placed them on the cave wall. He guided her magic around the cave, showing her where he had shifted things.

He pulled back from the magic and smiled at her "Satisfied?" he asked. She nodded, smiling back. He pulled her into a quick kiss, and they padded out of the cave, holding paws. The wolves were all looking into the cave, but stayed outside.

Krynn padded up, having been away teaching a few young wolves, "It seems you've found a home."

Kitara nodded, "We did."

Kitara and Rohan headed back to the wolves' cave in a swarm of excited wolves. The second they set paw in the cave the play-fighting began. Both were beset by multiple wolves. They "fought" back to back, laughing the whole time. After they had all tired themselves out, Rohan and Kitara dragged themselves over to their packs, where they just lay against the wall next to each other. After a quick rest, they picked up their things and padded off to their new home. Too tired to make a proper fire, Rohan called upon his magic and for one. Rohan and Kitara lay down next to each other, and after a quick whisper of "I love you" from each of them, they fell asleep.

In a nearby village, one that Rohan had visited once before for the rescue of a friend, there were whispers of demons. Recently, a young child had been telling his sibling of the wolf-man.

"Then a big silver wolf tackled the man who was gonna hurt the little wolf pup. He came back later as a man in a cloak, and he had funny eyes. They were gold looking. Then he just left!" Naturally, the parents who heard this quizzed the child on the man. In the small village, the whispers of a demon spread quickly, aided by the news that a village had recently been wiped out by one. The townsfolk began to light the towns lamps earlier; each family checked the doors and windows each night, and the sale of warding charms skyrocketed. Whenever there was hunting needed, it was done in groups, with all of them nervously fingering charms at the crack of each twig. The village was in for a surprise.
