Chapter 1 New enemies, the Arbodu
March 3, 2484 / 1450 hours / Finnelis system / High orbit over planet Golianite / UCSC Battle cruiser "Interruption"
Captain Greg Rainier gently put his coffee mug onto his desk as he listened to a WAIF[1](%5C) transmission from Earth. It was Chief Director Geil Nehal announcing the live commission of the UCSC's newest Dreadnaught, the Jenoid Brovel. Where the UCSC[2](%5C) got the names for some of their ships, Greg didn't know, nor did he really care, but he listened intently. _"It gives me great honor to unveil our greatest and 'largest' technological achievement in nearly twenty years. Behold! The Jenoid Brovel. A ship in the new Wolfe Class, The first to truly earn its designation as a Dreadnaught, with 305 M45-A3 80mm ion fission cannons, 200 SAW[3](%5C) cannons, 550 Falno V-19 escort fighters, 5 U-937 nuclear fusion reactors capable of producing an estimated 25,000 KWh of electrical power each, and twin Proloch Model 13-AU9 PMSG[4](%5C) engines. She also has a manned crew of 588 and can carry an additional 8,000 military personnel, as well as 350 HSAS[5](%5C) aerial transports, 50 Y3-F77 heavy battle tanks, 90 ULTAV[6](%5C) ground transports, and 725 escape pods for 15,600 persons to ensure maximum efficiency. Now without further ado, I present President Flitrial and his wife Yulia who put some of their valuable time aside to attend this landmark event and..."_Captain Rainier flipped the receiver off, he had heard enough, and he knew what was going to happen next and was pleased that the fleet had the extra firepower, the UCSC needs all the help it can get.
The UCSC space fleet had been through nothing but hell for ten years ever since the crew of the light cruiser Vanguard tried to contact a recently discovered alien race on a planet only known as K8-Delta44, 235.43 light years from UCSC controlled space, 16 hours with PMSG. The moment they achieved orbit, they came under attack by an alien fleet with technology eons beyond that of even the Jenoid. Shortly before their destruction the Vanguard managed to send out a distress signal, indicating that there were at least 100 hostile contacts, all with some type of powerful and devastating energy weapons... Unfortunately that was all they received before the Vanguard was destroyed. This incident had been marked as highly classified and only people such as Captain Rainier and his crew knew of this as his ship was the first to receive the signal. It was in the best interest of every ship captain to limit this information to as few personnel as possible, to keep morale from dropping across the fleet.
To the UCSC, they have a massive fleet, consisting of 93 ships in all, but an enemy with such power and numbers would surly crush the confidence of anyone who heard word of it. Over the past 3 years however there have been numerous attacks by this new enemy on UCSC ships as well as the edge colonies, and they seemed to have finally gotten to the highly inhabited planets and the public had to know. The death toll is uncertain, but some estimated that so far in only eight months over 40 billion lives have been claimed by this ruthless enemy. As well as the loss of 21 UCSC ships, twelve heavy cruisers, two freighters, five patrol craft, and two battleships, which happened to be armed with V55-2GI nuclear missiles. They were caught off guard however and never got a chance to use them while docked with the Tiydo Space Station in orbit over planet Dedin. It happened so quickly that not even a distress signal was able to be broadcast. The whole mess was found a week later when records indicated overdue shipments of needed supplies and a search team was send to investigate. When UCSC reconnaissance vessels arrived they found a pitch black sphere that at one time was rich with life and a thriving civilization. Ground crews landed on the planet only to find everything melted.
The Dedins, one of the many allies of the humans, in an effort to achieve better technology and knowledge mostly. Sadly, except for an estimated 5 million Dedins living on Earth and other space colonies, the 21 billion living on the planet's surface were instantly killed, never knowing what happened. The UCSC had had enough and began negotiations with the Imperial Democratic Congress for permission to declare war on this unknown enemy. The UCSC was granted their wish later that day and began contacting its greatest allies, the Cretios, Tyri, Fryuot, Altari, and Wrufal to find if they would assist the UCSC in their struggle. Three of the five agreed as the Tyri and Altari wished to remain neutral in this conflict and would only assist if they came under attack by this new enemy. The other alliances have already been affected by this new opponent and were thirsting for justice. Now the UCSC space fleet had gained an additional 53 war ships to add to its diminishing fleet of 65 ships for a total of 118. The entire fleet was spread out all across UCSC territory in groups of 8 ships which were all within seventy light years of each other, so in the event of a massive attack, if reinforcements were needed, they could be there in as little as ten minutes, one hour at the latest if the whole fleet was needed.
For the past few weeks Captain Rainier has thought mostly about the family he lost on Dedin. The captain and his peaceful species were (in a matter of speaking) on the verge of extinction, considering that 97.62% of his species population was wiped out in the attack and these outstanding numbers were beginning to bother him. Captain Rainier was thankful that at least some of his kind is still alive, but he had lost his family and many good friends living on Dedin, not to mention his home world. He was beginning to wonder how many more people have to die before this pestilence will be brought their rightful judgment, death. Normally the Dedins are a peaceful and beautiful race, but recent events have brought nothing but sorrow and rage amongst the species, but they aren't the only ones.
