First Week, Winter 1, Year 1580

It had been a merry evening. David Strianach invited Darnata White out for a fancy dinner to celebrate his having completed a season at his job. She agreed, and suggested that they invite along Gordon MacIntyger and Rayo Mairo. This sounded fine to him. Everyone at the High Court knew that the two felinoids were deeply in love. They were so happy about it that other furrs felt good just being around them.

The two couples had a fine time. They went to the same restaurant where David had proposed to Darnata. Gordon and Rayo were a bit nervous about the expense at first, but David insisted that he be allowed to pay for their dinners. The two couples talked about the bonding ceremonies each planned - but the fems had to do most of the talking. If anyone had asked the two mels what they had to eat or what was decided, they'd've had a hard time answering. They spent most of the evening just gazing admiringly at their beloveds.

The happy party had just rounded a corner by the park. Darnata was teasing David: "But why do you let Bastet boss you around like -", when there was the sound of something sweeping through the air, followed by a wet thunking sound.

Gordon sprawled forward, limply landing on his face, out cold.

The other three gasped and whirled around. They saw three grinning, ill-clad boars standing there, one idly swinging an iron rod back and forth.

The biggest boar said, "Well, lookie here, bros - it that shaved kitty gave us the trouble."

One of the others snickered and responded, "Yeah bro, but he ain't givin' no-one a shavin' hard time now. Looks like we done gived him a hard one instead."

The leader held out his paw for the iron bar; when he had it, he slashed it viciously at MacIntyger's arm and shattered the bone.

The boars all laughed. They lunged forward, the leader and one follower grabbing the fems, who were frozen in shock, and yanking them around so their wrists could be forcibly clutched behind their backs. The other follower slammed Strianach with his shoulder, like a football player; David gasped as all the air was knocked out of him and he sat down hard on the pavement. "You jus' stay there all quiet, old furr, and maybe you don' be hurt."

The boar who'd spoken to him kicked Gordon's broken arm, then stepped around behind David and brought out a large broad-bladed knife. He put the edge hard against David's throat. The badger felt a small trickle of blood start down his neck.

Seeing that both the mel threats were removed from consideration, the two largest boars laughed. The biggest one had dropped the bar - he was now holding Rayo's wrists and tail one-pawed in a painful grip behind her. "I think we gonna have us some entertainment tonight, bros."

"Yeah. Hey, let's us cut up that kitty!"

"Oh we gonna. We gonna cut him up good." The lead boar rubbed his ragged ear where Gordon's claws had ripped it apart in their earlier confrontation. "I owes him, I does. But firstest things firstest."

He flopped back onto the park bench behind him, pulling the helpless cat onto his lap. He reached around Rayo's body and grabbed her breast, sinking his fingertips into it harshly. She gasped in pain and cried out wordlessly. She struggled, but was held off-balance and couldn't get loose to defend herself. Darnata was being tormented the same way.

David saw Gordon's unbroken arm move slightly, then go limp again. Obviously, the snowtiger wasn't going to be able to do anything, even if he regained consciousness. The boss hog released Rayo's breast and seized his knife again, using it to slice away her clothing.

David reflexively started to rise, but the boar behind him just pressed his knife-edge in tightly against David's throat. "No, old furr, you ain't gonna do nothin." David sank back, his blood pounding, his heart sinking as he saw the two punk boars molesting the fems.

The two holding the fems ripped the fems' shirts loose, then yanked hard at the waists of the fems' clothing. As Rayo's fell about her feet, she wailed loudly. David saw Gordon's leg jerk this time. [If only he could get up ... but they would just club him down again before he was on his feet,] thought David.

The boar holding Darnata shoved her slacks down until her crotch was covered only by her panties. He ripped those away, then grabbed her sex and squeezed harshly. Darnata gasped and started crying. The now fully-aroused boar pressed his exposed cock against her tailhole. "Gonna use all three, you cunt," he grunted. He let go of her crotch and rubbed his paw up her belly to her breasts. Grabbing one, he twisted it hard, laughing as her crying increased.

The biggest boar wasn't able to play with his prey as much, since his free paw was filled with his knife. He dragged the tip up and down the siamese's belly. Then he hooked the knife into Rayo's panties and roughly cut them away. "How bout I carve my yiffin' name in ya, huh? Somethin' to 'member me by?"

As he said that, a whirlwind of events commenced.

The boar holding Darnata released her agonized breast and reached up to grab her chin. He intended to twist her head around so that he could kiss her, but he didn't get that far. The dalmatian's head darted forward like a striking snake and her fangs sank deep into his thumb. She clenched her jaw and yanked back, driving her teeth into bone, twisting, trying to rip the thumb from his paw.

He screamed and startled the lead boar, who was focused on lining his twisty cock up with Mairo's tailhole. That one turned his head to see what was going on, and opened his mouth. He didn't get any words out before David surged to his feet, leaping forward with a hissing snarl.

The boar who'd been holding David raked his knife across the badger's throat, yanking hard toward himself, actually helped by the badger's forward force. David's throat ripped open from side to side and his lifeblood gushed out and down.

Silenced but not stopped, David flung himself onto the boar holding Rayo. She tore loose from the distracted punk, and gave a scream that came from deep in her ancestry. It was as though a thousand gulls shrieked simultaneously. Her now-freed claws slashed the punk's face, ripping an eye completely out.

The terrified boss hog stabbed as hard as he could at the onrushing badger, sinking his knife deeply into David's chest, a blow to the heart that would have killed David if he wasn't already dead for all practical purposes.

David smashed into the boar, bending his spine backward over the low bench-back, snapping it. Then David fell over the dying boar and moved no more.

When Rayo Mairo screamed, Gordon's entire body spasmed and rose from the pavement like a released spring. He flew at the boar still holding Darnata. Although one arm dangled uselessly, broken, the other slashed out. That boar never stood a chance; still wailing at the agonizing damage to his thumb, he didn't even have time to decide to defend himself before the snowtiger's claws and teeth ripped his life and his innards out in a few seconds.

Then Gordon fell limply to the ground, totally unconscious. Blood poured from his ripped scalp - a depression was visible in his skull.

The dalmatian howled at the top of her lungs but, loud as that was, it was buried under the further shriek the siamese gave out.

A minute later, three Night Watchfurrs came running up in response to the earlier screaming, just in time to seize the boar who'd cut David's throat, before his scattered wits could organize enough to get him out of there.

One of them took one look at Gordon's crumpled body and turned to run to his Guardbox and call an ambulance and Emergency Healers.

Another turned David over, took one look and called to his departing partner, "Only need two. This one's gone, so is the gutted one." He steeled himself for his next task - he hated having to do it, but it was necessary. He patted the badger's body's pockets - finding a wallet, he opened it to see if there was identification in there or anything with instructions of who to call after an accident.

He flipped the wallet open one-pawed and a worn coin that had been tucked into a tiny pocket slipped out, tinkling on the stone paving. The Watchfurr picked it up to examine it. As he stared at it, his eyes grew huge. "By the All!" He swiveled and almost screamed after the departing Watchfurr: "Hurry, shave it!"

Rayo and her parents leapt to their feet as Healer Wind came into the hospital's waiting room. She tried to speak, but couldn't force any words out.

He loosened his surgical scrubs and dropped into a chair. "Ooohh. I am not as young as I was," he groaned. Seeing that Rayo was almost out of her mind with fear, he smiled at her. "Gordon will live. Arrgh! Careful!" He leaped to his feet, belying his complaint of age, and grabbed her as she swayed. "Sit down. Here. Now."

Rayo and Darnata fell together into a wide chair, hugging each other hard and crying - partially in grief at the loss of David and partially in joy at the saving of Gordon.

Kairng Rairng looked at the exhausted Healer. "You didn't say he'll be 'all right', did you?"

"No ser, I didn't. No-one takes damage to their head like that and promptly recovers. We'll see ... I wish that I could tell you things will go perfectly. However, I don't lie to my patients nor to their families. A six-hour surgery isn't something that's easily brushed away. I'll tell you this, though - he's getting the finest available care, he's in magnificent health, he's very strong-willed - oh yes, that matters - I have high hopes."

Gordon lay in a coma for all the next week. Rayo came to sit with him every day for as long as she could. Darnata did too, whenever she could, but she was having to go through her personal torment of settling David's affairs. She did manage to make visits during the days; the administrator at the High Court gave her time off with pay when he found out what happened.

Third Week, Winter 1, Year 1580

It was early evening. Rayo hurried through the hospital on her way to Gordon's bedside. Usually, she'd've already been there by this time, but her parents had finally put their feet down and forced her to eat a proper supper. She had to admit that they were right - she hadn't had a full night's sleep since the attack. She kept waking up trying to scream - the vicious assault came back in her dreams every time. She was exhausted.

Suddenly, she slammed to a halt. There, standing at the door of Gordon's room, was Lightning! He hadn't seen her - he couldn't see anything through the tears pouring down his face. He was weeping hard - Rayo could hear him trying to control his gasping sobs, but he couldn't.

What to do? How to do it? [Which way should I go?]

Before she could decide, Lightning wiped his eyes and raised his head. He gave one last look into Gordon's room and then turned to leave. He took one step and froze as he realized that Rayo was standing there. He spun to get away, but was thwarted - the room was at the end of a corridor, with only an alarmed firedoor as a way out for him.

His shoulders slumped and he turned back to face her.

"Hello, Lightning," she quietly greeted him.

"You're speaking to me?"

"Of course. Why not?"

"I - I thought you must hate me."

"What? No! Never! Why would you think that?"

"Well, Gordon and I - and then he - and now -" stuttered the distraught panther.

"Lightning. Dear Lightning. Please ... come sit in here with me." She took his paw and led him into Gordon's sickroom. She tugged him over to the chairs. "Lightning, I love Gordon. I love everything about Gordon. You've been the most important part of his life for years. How could I hate you?"

The panther tried to answer, but whatever he wanted to say was washed away by a renewed flood of tears. All Rayo's comforting instincts rose up - she slid her chair over tight by his, and hugged him as hard as she could. Her tears started up, too. Lightning brought his arm up and hugged it around her.

"Lightning, he loves you still. It's just that he loves me too. I - I want us to be together for him, not pulling at him."

The panther opened his mouth to protest this, but she continued, "Yes, we are. The All knows that I don't want to pull him away from you. But because you turned your back on him, I am. I don't think you want to pull him, either, do you. But you want things to go back the way they were. And they can't - he can never give you his entire heart again - and that rips at him."

"I'd never, never hurt him!"

There was a silent pause. Then she softly asked, "And me, Lightning? Would you hurt me?"

The shocked look on his round black face was enough answer.

"But you are hurting me - hurting me terribly by making Gordon feel like he has to love only one of us ... even if it seems he's chosen me."

"No, no ..." The panther fell forward in his chair, burying his face in his paws. "I just want to be with him." He raised his stricken countenance to her. "I love him. I've always loved him. And, and ... I want to love whoever he loves ..."

Rayo felt like a huge weight had been lifted off of her. "That - that's what I want too."

A nurse bustled in but, seeing the two weeping furrs, decided that she had better things to do in another room.

After a while, they regained their composure and moved over to Gordon's bed. They both hesitated, then peered shyly at each other, each wordlessly offering the chair closest to Gordon's head. Realizing how silly that they must have looked, each smiled a little bit.

Lightning said, "Um ... gentlefems first?"

"Only if you'll sit close to him here, too."

The two cats settled in at Gordon's side. They couldn't hold his paws - one had IV tubes installed and the other arm was in a cast - they didn't want to accidentally hurt him with any movement of a paw. But they could gently rest their paws on his blanket-covered ribs.

After a little while, the exhausted Lightning leaned forward and rested his head on the bed at Gordon's side. His tears started to silently flow again. Rayo stayed sitting upright for a few minutes more, then she too leaned forward; she laid her head on the panther's broad back, her tears soaking his fur. Their arms around each other while their free paws lay on Gordon's side felt wonderfully comforting.

About a halfhour later, the nurse came back. She saw the two young cats semi-reclining there where they'd fallen asleep. Shaking her head, she silently stepped over and checked Gordon's bandages and tubes. Then she left the room, turning the lights down to Dim, almost out.

The young cats were sound asleep, so they didn't hear when Gordon's drugged breathing changed. His eyes flickered open and the pupils dilated in the faint illumination. He didn't move, but his eyes focused here and there in puzzlement. Then they cleared as he realized where he was. The focus shifted to the two heads at his side - it stayed there for a long time. Then a faint smile formed on the snowtiger's face and he drifted back to sleep, content.
