Lost Soldier: 6, Old Man's Tricks
#6 of Lost Soldier -Book 1- Complete
Shoving himself off of another tree, he found it was hard to run with his sides torn up and the loss of blood was starting to effect him. Staggering several times as he ran, He wasn't helped by the fact that he had to jump behind trees to try and avoid the sniper who was somewhere in the distance behind him. As he neared the open plain that separated the Slicing Winds Clan from where the hybrid beasts now lay dead, the trees were scattered far from each other and the further he ran the further apart they became. The more he ran the further it seemed to get, the pain in his sides, the sniper and most likely a military team on his heels and the loss of blood becoming three major problems with his escape.
Ducking behind another tree and pressing his right side against it to try and catch his breath he looked over himself. His already blood stained uniform was getting a fresh coat of blood, the warmth of his blood and the coldness he was feeling in his arms and legs letting him know that he wouldn't live much longer unless he got some help. The Slicing Wind Clan would help him, he was sure of that but he had to get past that line that Wind had dragged out with her heel. Pushing off of the tree which caused him to stagger before nearly falling but able to catch himself and start running again, not looking back knowing that if he did he'd regret it, he was tired and wounded and a fresh military unit would be right there on his ass.
"He won't last long like that" said the black panther, watching the human push off of another tree before nearly falling as he lowered his binoculars and looking to the leopard kneeling next to him, a rifle in his paws and his right eye behind the scope. Looking to his left, he saw four other furs standing next to him, all in stealth military camo with military grade assault rifles. Looking forward again he peered through his binoculars. "I don't know how much longer he'll live but we need some information out of him...take his legs."
'Yes sir', answered the leopard, while slipping his index finger onto the trigger.
Seeing the open plain just in front of him, he gave a small smirk before another rifle shot echoed out and then a hot pain surged through his right thigh just as his right foot hit the ground. His leg gave out instantly and he fell to the right smashing his right shoulder into a tree causing him to spin and crash to the ground on his back, sliding a few inches before coming to a stop.
Looking up after hearing a distant gun shot ring out, Wind looked to her grandfather who was gazing into the fire in front of him intently. The rest of the clan where all quiet, though the gun shot did gain many of their attention while others stared firmly into nothing but air of the large fires spread around them. Kneeling back down next to her grandfather who turned to look at her, Wind tilted her head as her grandfather smiled to her,
"You know Wind, our territory doesn't stop till the human road." Wind lowered her head before sighing and standing up again with her arms crossed.
"He brought this on himself, I told him that if he left we wouldn't help him. That was a punishment for drawing that blade on Koro, he really hurt her you know," Wind said with gritted teeth as she glared off to her right.
Slowly standing himself up the elderly 'human' sighed as he gazed at the fire in front of him before looking up at his granddaughter, slipping his right hand from under the heavy pelt that he wore and placing it on her shoulder. "You know why he did it as does everyone else, I am slightly angry by the fact that he threatened Koro but look at it from his view...what would you have done if your roles were switched Wind, think about it and then cast your punishment". With that he turned and moved off with the lycanthrope that he claimed was his mate, both moving into the darkness leaving several humans, anthros and feral wolves gazing toward Wind.
Looking down at the ground in front of her before her eyes shifted toward the fire, it seemed like hours passed as the fire burned and the reflection of the flames laid in Winds eyes before she let out a very loud "Dammit, let's go." With that all of those around her jumped up and quickly raced after her as she charged off toward the open plain.
Gritting his teeth as his hands clutched his right thigh, trying to make the pain stop as blood poured from the hole that wasn't supposed to be there, he pushed himself up and quickly dragged himself backwards with his hands and elbows, trying to get behind a tree and out of the line of fire. Panting heavily as his vision started to fade, feeling light headed from the extensive damage to his body and in response just wanted to shut down, grabbing his chest as he tried to keep from going into shock with deep panting, needing to get air to his brain.
Looking at his leg he made some quick decisions. 'They could have shot me in the chest or head, they want me alive,' was the first thought as he started to push himself up, using the tree as leverage and leaning on his left leg. 'With that extra gunshot to my leg I've got maybe twenty to thrifty minutes before my body shuts down completely from blood loss if I don't drop sooner.' Steadying himself against the tree before pushing off and doing some hobbled jumps, he tried to keep most of his weight on his left leg, his right hand firmly over the exit hole on the front of his right thigh as he ran, hoping he'd be able to keep his leg if he lived through this.
Finally reaching the open field with a burst from the bush that he charged through without care, though the strong branches that slammed against his leg really reminded him that his leg had been hit. He was able to see the other side of the forest and the same group of trees where he had spoken to Wind before he left out on this insane mission. Nearing the other side of the forest in a straight sprint, ignoring the pain in his sides and legs, he hoped that the adrenaline would keep him going for just a little longer. A second shot echoed throughout the forest and a spray of blood exploded from the front of his left thigh, the only thing he saw was the ground as he slammed onto it face first.
Gritting his teeth he curled up, gripping the hole in his left leg, feeling the warm blood pouring over his already blood covered hands, his body was shivering and he couldn't feel his fingers or his toes and that numbing feeling was creeping up his arms and legs. He had lost too much blood now and he knew that he was finished. Death was unavoidable and as his mind registered the fact that he was going to die he visibly calmed down before crawling himself forward, leaning against the tree that Wind had been leaning against before he left the Slicing Winds Clan territory.
Looking up at the dark sky, seeing the many stars lining the black sky overhead, he could feel the warmth of his blood soaking into the back of his pants, the blood continuing to flow from his wounds, but soon the sound of boots stepping on grass caught his attention. Looking forward he saw four furs staring at him.
"You're Michael S. Current, Sergeant in the 21st Rescue Squad of the U.S Army," a rather large black panther stated while he stepped forward, though Mike remained silent as he stared up at the panther, feeling himself slipping into unconsciousness.
Mike's eyes faded slightly and everything became blurred before the panther looked up, just in time to see an overly large white wolf jump from behind the tree that Mike was leaning against. The wolf in a full speed charge and before the panther had time to raise his weapon the wolf jumped through the air with its jaws slipping around the panther's neck. The panther quickly fell back under the wolf's weight, the rest of the team taken off guard just as much as the panther. As the closest fur raised his assault rifle a grey feral wolf snapped its jaws around the barrel of his gun causing his burst to hit the soldier next to him.
A black anthro wolf jumped from a full sprint and landed on a tree branch without a sound, quickly sprung forward and flipped forward, slamming both of her legs around another soldiers shoulders and spun herself around, a sickening crack coming from the soldiers neck dislocating under the sudden weight and pressure.
Wind suddenly appeared, with glowing eyes and her right hand was quickly found smashing into the throat of a male fox, the sound of his windpipe being crushed under the weight, followed by him wheezing for air though unable to get enough to his lungs as he fell. The last soldier decided to try and run but were quickly taken down by a human and dire wolf as they attempted to flee. Wind looked over those who followed her before turning back to look at Mike as he sat against the tree, "How are you feeling?"
Mike slowly lifted his head. "Take one fucking guess," came his pained voice, though he smirked right after he said it. "You crossed the line." This made Wind's slightly annoyed expression shift and caused her to look off to the side.
"You're part of the clan, we don't abandon ours..." turning from the sitting human, she gazed at the four furs laying there before looking to two anthro wolves standing near. "Pick him up and let's get him to Grandfather." The two furs nodded and quickly moved to Mike's side and lifted him from the ground, causing a gritted tooth cry of pain from Mike.
Wind looked over Mike's body, seeing that both of his legs had been shot and her expression turned grave as the two anthros began taking him into the forest. Mike looked over the four furs that had been killed by the clan and something clicked in his mind as he was turned around to be taken into the woods. Quickly Mike struggled and spun around jumping toward Wind,
"Get down now" he yelled out just as he tackled Wind to the ground, a gunshot echoed out through the night air and a burst of blood sprayed from the side of Winds head.
Mike landed on top of Wind as she clutched the left side of her head from the sniper round that had caught just above her left eye. Mike pushing her down twisted her body around as well as pushed it back, so the round just barely missed instead of hitting her through the temple as the sniper was aiming for, he didn't get a second shot as wolves dashed off and quickly found him.
Wind lowered her hand from her head, seeing the blood staining it before smirking. "Thanks Mike, I owe..." looking at the human laying atop her and seeing that he was not moving, she grabbed his shoulders and rolled him over to find that his breathing was extremely shallow and his body was cold. She looked to the furs around him as they quickly gathered around.
"Get Grandfather now!" she yelled out and pulled Mike close trying to warm him and wake him, shaking him slightly before looking up as some of the humans and anthros went to run for the elder, but were quick to stop as they saw him stepping from the forest.
Moving toward Wind and Mike with his normal hunched posture, looking over the human and his granddaughter with a serious expression before his eyes slowly widened, his neon green eyes beginning to glow as he looked Mike's bloodied body in Wind's arms. Wind looked up at her grandfather with an almost desperate gaze though she blinked as he shucked his animal pelt back, showing his surprising toned body before he raised his hands to the sky and all the stars seemed to brighten along with Elder Moons Shadow's eyes. His eyes glowed strongly, he thrust his hands forward before taking a deep breath which seemed to draw the very energy from the air. Lowering his head and exhaling the air onto Mike's chest made the human gasp in a deep breath as a dim green glow enveloped his form before settling down, leaving Mike sleeping in Winds arms.
Wind gazed in amazement, along with all the others around, wolves, humans, anthros and feral alike. Wind blinked as she watched Mike breath normally in her arms as if he was sleeping but her eyes slowly shifted up to her grandfather who hunched back over, pulling his pelt over his form before giving a loving smile to his granddaughter.
"An old man has to have his tricks huh," his words were followed by a happy laugh from him.
Mike slowly opened his eyes, seeing nothing but a blur in front of his face, though after a few blinks and several minutes it began to clear. Turning his head to the right he found that he was in the cave that he had woken up in when he first met the Slicing Wind Clan. His eyes quickly found themselves locked onto a white spot that was sitting next to his bed. Reaching out with his right hand, once his fingers came into contact with soft fur the white spot jumped before turning and looking at him.
Koro leaned toward Mike's face, her eyes looking directly into his. "Michael, are you alright?" she asked, concern in her voice, but she gave a small yip as she was pulled toward Mike who wrapped his arms around her neck, hugging her against him firmly with his hands gripping her fur tightly.
"Koro, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry..." his voice was strained and his body felt heavy but he had to tell her, Koro's surprise quickly fading and she rubbed her head against his as he apologized over and over.
"It's alright Michael," she reassured him though he continued apologizing as if she would never forgive him for what he did.
Moving back into the cave after Mike finally let her go and stopped his apologizing, she went to get him some water. As soon as Koro padded back into the cave she quickly set the bucket down to yell. "No, lay back down right now," she commanded while quickly moving toward Mike as he looked at her, being propped up on his elbows and trying to sit up fully.
Sighing as Koro yelled at him he looked at the large wolf. "Koro..." but she glared at him firmly and called out a direct 'No' as she stood eye to eye with him at the side of his bed.
"I don't want to just lay here Koro, I'm not good at just doing nothing, I'll go crazy," this making Koro blink before what could only be described as a 'sly' look appearing over her face.
Moving closer and slipping up into the bed with Mike, making him blink before she moved her head up against his, pushing him back with her paws making him blush for a quick moment before he grunted as she laid atop of him with her head against his neck. "Well then, talk to me."
Mike blinked and looked down at Koro as best he could as her form covered his. "What" was his first word, which made her ears perk, which was more or less the only part of her head that he was able to see from his position.
"You don't want to just lay here and do nothing, right, then talk to me, tell me what ever you want." Mike finding his head laying back down as he thought over her words.
Soon Mike found himself talking to the large wolf that was lying on top of him. He didn't really know what to talk about so he just started telling her his story and he was amazed at how easily it came to just spill his entire life out to a large Dire wolf. Wind, who was leaning against the cave just to the side of the entrance, found that Mike telling his life story so easily was a bit strange, though he had nearly died, again. She shrugged and closed her eyes and just listened to him as he told everything that he felt like telling Koro.
After telling his story he made Koro tell him her story, which was a lot longer and as it turned out Koro was decades older than Mike. Dire wolves apparently didn't age like normal wolves but instead aged like Lycanthrope and would live for hundreds of years before finally dying of old age. They talked about his plans for the future before he was to join the clan, Koro's aspirations and what she would do in the future, which became very interesting when she said that she was thinking of taking Mike as a mate when he was made an official clan member. He found out that several females had their eyes on him.
Mike had a lot of questions about what he would be expected to do when he was part of the clan. It seemed that he would have to find out when he became a member, though he would mainly just have to do what everyone did unless given a specific job and it turned out that there were several 'jobs' that he could be assigned to. Koro didn't go into detail about what he could end up doing but after hours and hours of talking both Koro and Mike found themselves in a light sleep, Mike having a warm blanket and Koro having a nice pillow just as they did the first night they met.
Wind looked into the cave after a minute of silence and smiled before lifting her head. Running her left finger tips over the small scratch over her left eye, she seemed lost in thought before she snapped to attention and spun around, seeing the elder behind her with a smile.
"You are going to keep this scar Wind?" he asked, looking up to his granddaughter who relaxed at the sight of her grandfather.
"I think I should as a reminder not to let my guard down even when I think all the enemy is dead. Might save my head if Michael's not around next time," she explained while brushing her right hand through her long black hair, which had been taken out of the two pigtails.
"If you see it that way. They say a female should hide her scars in the human world but in ours she should display them proudly, show that she is strong and able to survive... I think Michael will enjoy it as well," this making Wind blush and glare at her grandfather.
"T-That's not...I'm not keeping it cause he saved me."
Elder Moon's Shadow laughed as he turned and started toward the large fires in the distance. "Ah Wind, seeing you and him makes my joy grow, this coming season will be very glorious indeed," he said as Wind blushed furiously at the mere thought of the 'season.'
Wind slowly calmed down as her grandfather disappeared and soon her fingers brushed down her face as she lowered her hands to her sides with a small sigh. Turning and looking off to the dark night sky, seeing the moon slowly starting to form into it's waxing stage. "Love huh?" she said aloud to herself.
