The Phoenix Chapter 5
#5 of The Phoenix
~Charles~
*****April 14, 2008; 2:34 p.m. *****
I had been sitting with my newly hatched Riolu for a few hours now, and she had just now stirred from her peaceful rest. I found her sleeping form to be soothing; her small chest moving up and down in time with her quiet breath was like the calming sound of rain softly falling on a roof on a slow Saturday. Leaning downwards slowly, I whisper to her "Hey there little one, how are you feeling?"
She yawns as she looks up at my smiling face and replies with a sleepy "Ri?"
I look towards Mirabelle and she tells me "She doesn't know how to talk yet, mainly because she has just hatched, give her a few weeks though and she might be able to talk to you by using aura speech."
Confused I ask her "What's aura speech?"
She thinks a moment before saying "Before I explain to you what aura speech is, perhaps I should explain to you what aura is. Aura is a force that most creatures cannot see, but Riolu and their evolution Lucario can. Aura can be destructive or it can be helpful. It all depends on how aura is used. Riolus and Lucarios use aura to attack but they can also use it to heal others. Now getting to your question, Lucarios and Riolus can use aura to speak to others thus why it is called aura speech."
"Oh okay, but why would she be able to use aura speech before she can talk? Wouldn't she learn to speak before using aura?"
Mirabelle shakes her head and replies "She will learn how to speak through you via her aura bond with you. I've heard that Riolus become very attached to their trainers. It's even rumored that Riolus evolve when they experience great happiness with their trainers."
Interested I ask her "Are there any other pokemon like Riolu and Lucario? I mean are there any that evolve from emotion?"
Mirabelle nods as she answers "Yes there are baby pokemon such as Pichu and Clefa evolve through happiness, and there are several others as well. If you want a complete list of them you can check your Pokedex. It should have the information you're looking for."
I nod and scratch Riolu behind her ears, hoping that she would find the action enjoyable. I'm rewarded by her closing her eyes in enjoyment of the scratching. As I scratch I notice Mirabelle looking at Riolu's treatment with jealously in her eyes, obviously wanting the same treatment the newborn was getting. "Mirabelle you can share."
She walks over to me and nuzzles my side. As she nuzzles me I can't help but smile at her, she was just like a puppy looking for attention. I smile down at her and ask her "You're jealous of Riolu aren't you?"
She blushes as she looks up and answers "N-no I'm not!"
I look at her with my best you-aren't-fooling-anybody look on my face which results in her looking down and mumbling "Maybe a little..."
I smirk and tell her "You're going to have to share me Mirabelle."
She looks back up at me with a frown on her face and replies "But I don't want to share you..."
I look down at her and say with a mild tone of annoyance "Mirabelle."
She looks down once more and says "Fine...but I'm not sharing the bed with anybody but you."
I scratch her behind her ears and say "You would've had to share me anyways, but I think I can agree with not sharing the bed with anybody but you."
Pleased at hearing this, she kisses my cheek and says "Thank you," and then adds "You know Riolu still needs a name."
I nod and ask her "You got any suggestions? I can't think of any right now."
She thinks for a moment before answering "What about Rose or Lucy?"
I look down at Riolu and ask "You like either of those?"
The small aura pup looks up at me with a look of curiosity. Seeing no real response from her, I then look towards Kiara and ask "Kiara, you have any ideas for names?"
Kiara, who had been occupied with tickling Adalene, looks up at me and asks "Did you ask me something Charles?"
I smile and say "I asked you if you had any name suggestions for Riolu."
"I'm not very good with names" she replies "But I'll try anyways, how about Morgan, Mary, or Sammie?"
Once again I look down at Riolu, and once again she looks up in curiosity. Kiara then says "I told you I wasn't good with name, sorry."
"Its okay, you tried." I reply "I just got an idea for a name, what about Destiny?"
This time, instead of giving me a curious look for a third time, she smiles at me. Taking this as her accepting the name I smile as I say "I guess her name is Destiny then."
Mirabelle and the others give their approval and the room is quiet for a few minutes. Deciding to start up a conversation instead of let the room stay silent, I ask Kiara "So Kiara, what do you plan on doing now that you're free? If you want I can release Adalene so both of you can live together as mother and child in the wild."
She is quiet for several minutes before asking Adalene "What do you want to do? I'll leave that decision up to you"
Adalene replies "I want to stay with you, but I also want to stay with Charles. I don't want to go with only one and not the other, so I want you to go with Charles so I don't have to decide between either of you."
Kiara smiles as she says "Well I guess that means I'm joining your team Charles, because I don't want to make my daughter make a tough decision."
"Welcome to the team then Kiara" I reply "If you ever want to leave just tell me, I'll let you go, no questions asked."
Kiara smiles as she says "Thank you, if I knew you weren't him, I would've thought you were my mate after that question you just asked me. You not only look like him, you act like him as well. It's no surprise to me that Adalene thought you were her father."
I'm about to ask her what her mate looked like when two things happen. The first being the sound of a propeller driven airplane flying over head, and then a few seconds later a man in his twenties bursts through the doors and runs to the front desk. He was wearing a pair of light blue jean shorts that covered about three-fourths of his leg that looked like they were worn out because of several holes in the legs of the jeans. His shirt was mainly black and on the back there are pokeballs arranged so that it made a picture of a hand with only the middle finger raised. His hair was hidden by a black cap turned backwards. He runs to the front desk and yells "Officer Jenny, another alien aircraft has been spotted!"
Interested I ask him "What does the aircraft look like?"
He replies "It's not jet propelled like our aircraft, it has a propeller and its wings point straight outwards from the fuselage."
I think to myself quickly
I hastily ask him "How long ago was it spotted and how far away is it?"
He answers "I just spotted it flying overhead at a low altitude a few seconds ago. Why do you ask?"
I turn to my pokemon and say "Mirabelle stay here with Adalene, her mother, and Destiny. Ansgar come with me, I may need your help."
Mirabelle and Ansgar, realizing the urgency of the situation, both nod their heads and follow their respective orders. I turn to the man and say "Show me which direction the aircraft went in."
The man and I step outside and he points westward. I shake his hand and say "Thank you, stay here I need to talk to you after I check into this." I then turn to Ansgar and ask "Can you carry me and still fly?"
Ansgar answers "Get on my back and hold on tight."
I climb onto his back and hold him around his chest so that I wouldn't slip off mid-flight. "I'm ready."
Ansgar nods and flies westward it is only a few moments into the flight when I see a parachute and a mile beyond the parachute was the plane, only a few hundred feet off of the ground. I knew the plane was doomed as was the pilot flying it. I say a quick prayer for the pilot and the other passenger, hoping the lord would accept them both into his heavenly kingdom, then say to Ansgar "Follow the parachutist down!"
Ansgar asks me "What about the pilot of the plane?"
I yell back "He's as good as dead, that plane is going to explode and they both are going to be incinerated before we can even get to the wreckage! The most we can do for them is pray that they both settled their peace with the lord."
Ansgar, seeing the truth of my words, descends with the parachutist and flies close enough that I could see who the parachutist was. It was Private Robert P. Gruebel. He was only 5'4" tall, but could win a fight against almost anybody who challenged him to a fight. In fact he had won several awards since he joined the military for his martial arts skills. He was one of those people that you wanted as a friend because he was always there for you. You could tell him what was on your mind, even if it was disturbing, and he wouldn't tell you to go away because he didn't like what you were saying or who you were. His eyes were a light green and his face had a look that made you think that he was planning something. He had a build to him that made him look weak, mainly because of how short he was, but in reality he could actually bench press 120 pounds. His hair is a dark brown, almost black. He was one of the younger pilots of the flight at twenty years old, which was a few years younger than most.
Worried about where he was going to land, I look in his path and made a estimation of where he was going to land and breathed a sigh of relief because he was going to land on a hill that had a few trees on it, not the easiest place to land but at least I didn't have to worry very much about him hanging himself on his own parachute lines if they got caught in a tree. If he were going to sustain an injury, it would probably be from landing improperly. He was coming in slow, which was good because it meant there was even less chance for injury.
The next minute seemed to go by in slow motion, making the minute become an eternity. As the three of us slowly descended Ansgar and I flew lazy circles around Gruebel as we waited for him to land on the ground below. We continue descending, Ansgar continuing his slow orbit around the drifting parachutist as he continued to fall. The last few seconds were agonizingly slow as I couldn't help but worry that something would go wrong as this would be when it would happen. Then the moment of truth happened, and Gruebel touched down and came down in a not so graceful fall, but he wasn't hurt. I yell to Ansgar "Land near him."
Ansgar complies and lands fifteen feet away from the pilot who had now safely landed. Less than a second after Ansgar touches down I'm already dismounting him and seconds later I'm already running towards my fellow airman. As I run to Gruebel I yell "Gruebel what happened to the other two pilots?!"
Gruebel just looks at me, a bit shaken from something and so I ask him "They were in the plane weren't they?"
Gruebel slowly begins shaking his head "T-they disappeared...they were in the plane before the light, and when I could see again they were gone."
I reply "Just like what happened to me, may god help them wherever they are."
Gruebel looks down, and nods slowly "Do you know where we are?"
I smile as I say "Gruebel you won't believe this, but you aren't on Earth anymore, you're in the pokemon world now, and in the future because today's date is April 14, 2008 and it's around 3 in the afternoon."
Gruebel looks at me blankly and says "You're kidding right? This looks like Earth! The trees look the same!"
In response I shake my head and motion for Ansgar to come and stand beside me. I inform Gruebel "This is Ansgar, he is a Flygon."
Gruebel takes a few steps backwards in fear of the dragon that had just made himself known. "You-you weren't lying about not being on Earth, so I'll assume that you aren't lying about the date, but how do I know you have Ansgar under control and he won't attack me?"
I smile and answer him "He won't attack you, he doesn't want to lose me and he knows that if he attacks you that is exactly what is going to happen."
Ansgar, wanting to show he meant no harm, walks over to Gruebel and hugs him. However this causes an opposite effect on the pilot and he begins yelling "Help me he's attacking me!"
I smile as I reply "No he isn't he is hugging you because he want you to know he doesn't want to hurt you."
Gruebel is motionless for a moment, and a few seconds later he hesitantly returns the hug. I let them hug for a few seconds before saying "We should probably be getting back to Mirabelle and the others, they're waiting for us."
Gruebel looks up and asks "Is Mirabelle like Ansgar here?"
I smile and say "She is a pokemon, but she isn't a flygon like Ansgar, she's a zangoose which is like a large mongoose. You can meet her and the rest of my team when we get back to the police station."
He nods and replies "Let's get going then, I want to get back to civilization as soon as possible."
We begin walking eastward towards the city from where Ansgar and I had departed from minutes before. Unfortunately for us, there was no path and so we had to rely on following Ansgar who flew overhead to lead the way. Not even two minutes into our trip back, Gruebel trips and falls and I rush to his side. I help him sit up and then "Are you alright?"
He groans and says "I think so, but my ankle hurts a lot. I think I may have twisted it so it's going to be hard to walk on it, you or Ansgar are probably going to have to carry me."
Nodding I yell up to Ansgar "Ansgar I need you to carry Gruebel, he twisted his ankle!"
Ansgar begins a steep spiraling dive and lands ten feet in front of us, his wings stirring up the dust around us, causing both Gruebel and I to not be able to see for a few moments. When the dust clears and we can see again I help Gruebel get onto Ansgar. It wasn't difficult, but it took longer than what it should have taken, mainly because he wouldn't believe that he wouldn't fall off and I had to keep explaining that Ansgar would fly slowly so he wouldn't have trouble staying on during flight.
After several minutes of telling him he wouldn't fall off I got tired of having to repeat myself over and over gain so I say "Gruebel hang on to Ansgar. Ansgar take off."
Gruebel, who thought Ansgar wouldn't actually take off with him still on his back, quickly held onto Ansgar's neck as the green dragon took off suddenly. Once the dragon had risen about a hundred feet into the air, the cloud began to settle down and we resumed our short trek to the police station. As I walked I made sure to watch out for sudden dips and other hazards that would hinder us more than we already were.
Five minutes later I found myself at the same spot where Kiara, Mirabelle, and I had destroyed Dennis's criminal career several hours ago. I knew we were now and so I ran to the police station, eager to see my team and mate once again.
A minute later I see Ansgar, with Gruebel still on his back, at the entrance to the police station, another thirty seconds and I'm walking through the door into the station. The man, like I had asked him to do, was sitting in a chair inside of the station carrying on a conversation with Mirabelle. As I walk in Officer Jenny walks up to Gruebel and I, and with a stern look on her face, tells us "You both have a lot of explaining to do about the planes. You both have the entire city saying there are aliens attacking the planet. I want to know exactly what is happening with you and your planes, and I want to know now. I swear to Arceus that if you are aliens who are invading I will personally see to it that you are killed in one of the most painful ways possible!"
I wait for her to stop yelling before replying "Ma'am, we are aliens, but not by choice. We were on our home planet, Earth, on the date of December 5, 1945 and we were flying a practice run with our bombers when we were flying over the ocean. A bright light flashed before us all and we were both teleported here, but for some reason only one person appears here, we don't know where the others in the plane are going to. I arrived a few days ago and Private Gruebel here arrived a few minutes ago. I assure you we don't have the technology to travel between worlds, let alone travel into outer space. If one of our pilots could land a plane here, I would be able to prove to you that I am not lying, but right now all the proof I have is the words of Private Gruebel, my zangoose Mirabelle, your newest prisoner Dennis, and myself. They will all tell you the same thing, we mean no harm. If all of the planes show up, there will be three more that will appear over this city, and I'm not sure when they will appear. Another one could appear in a few minutes, or it could be years before the third one appears."
She is silent for several moments, thinking about what to say next. She finally breaks the silence by saying "I don't think you're lying, but I would like to know how you all are coming to our planet. You mentioned you saw a bright light before you came here correct?"
I nod as I reply "Yes ma'am that is correct. Before we disappeared we both saw a bright white light."
She nods "We have people who disappear in a similar manner, except we don't know where they go to as well. It seems we just got some new information about what happens to people when they disappear like you all did. For now you all are free to go."
She turns and walks back towards the hallway that led to the room where Dennis was still being interrogated. As she walked off I heard her mumble "I wonder what else is going to happen to the city today."
The man who had informed me gets up after she leaves and walks over to me, a smile on his face and his hand outstretched to shake my hand. "So you and him are the two people who are causing this city to go crazy huh? How interesting, a whole city turns it focus from bails and bonds to talking about a rumored alien invasion. I applaud you, by the way my name is Gregory Schneider, and I'm a starting trainer."
I shake his hand and say "My name is Lieutenant Taylor but you can call me Charles, thank you for your help with me finding my friend. Without your help he might have died."
His eyes open a bit at the mention of my military rank "You're in the military?" he asks.
I nod and reply "Yes, both Gruebel and I are both in the United States Air Force from Earth. My friend and I are both in your debt, if you want or need anything say so."
At the mention of us wanting to pay him back his eyes light up "I want to go with you two on your pokemon journey."
I tell him "I don't even know where I'm supposed to go right now so you will have to tell us where to go, but I don't see what you can accomplish from going with us."
He smiles and replies "Traveling with aliens? That sounds awesome to me! Can you imagine telling your friends you're friends with some aliens?"
I laugh and say "So you're going with us to say you're friends with some aliens? Alright you can come with us, but it might be a few days before we leave again because Gruebel twisted his ankle when walking back here. Also, if we find out you're with Team Rocket, you're going to end up like Dennis in there, understand?"
He nods and tells me "There's a hotel across the street, we can stay there for a few days so Gruebel's ankle can heal."
I shake my head as I say "We can't afford a hotel, we don't have any money."
He smiles as he says "My family owns the hotel; you'll be able to stay for free."
I smile and say "Well then let's get him to the hotel, the shorter he is on his injured ankle, the better."
My team, Greg, and I all walk over to the hotel and Ansgar carries Gruebel inside. Greg walks behind the desk and goes into a room behind it, then comes out a minute later. "Take Gruebel into that room, my mom is a nurse at the local hospital; she'll take a look at his leg and see if anything needs to be done to it."
Ansgar wasn't going to be able to fit behind the desk and so Greg and I helped Gruebel dismount Ansgar, once off I got on his left side because he had injured his left ankle and I put my arm on his shoulder's and he put his on mine so that we could walk into the room. His mom, after several minutes of examining the injured ankle, informed us "There's nothing that I can do right now for him, but he needs to stay off of his ankle for today and tomorrow. Since you are friends of Greg, you can stay here in the hotel until it heals, Greg will get you a room."
Gruebel nods and says "Thank you for your kindness ma'am"
Greg, who had been in the room with us, went and got two cards, one for me and one for Gruebel. I look at it and ask "What is this for?"
He replies "It's your room key, there is a slot on the door and you stick the card into the slot. Make sure the arrow is pointing towards the door and the barcode is pointing downwards. I'll show you where your rooms are."
He had gotten us both rooms on the first floor near the front desk so that if either of us needed anything we wouldn't have to go very far. When he showed me my room Mirabelle ran past us and jumped onto the larger of the two beds and yelled "Dibs!"
I smiled and said "Thank you Greg."
He nodded and told us "Its no problem, around this time of year we are usually pretty quiet, the Spring break rush doesn't start for another two weeks. I think I'll leave you and your team to get comfortable. If you need anything just call the front desk and we'll get it for you."
After saying this he left me and my team to get comfortable in the room.
