Story Description: Greg gets over his weakness to discover that his dreams might just come true after all.

***Part 5 < Current chapter > Part 7***

** ***A Dream of Dolphins: A Spark of Hope*****

Morning came along with a fantastic mood. Greg was in his best clothes and out the door before he knew it. Yesterday remained blocked behind at steadfast wall as he ran through the busy streets. Like the people he passed by, he now had a purpose, a goal he needed to fulfill not only for the betterment of his future, but for Arrow and the dolphins' sakes as well.

For that, Greg vowed never to be weak again.

The next day saw him on the streets leading to Sapphire city. Greg kept his head up, fighting fatigue and the sun's glare until he reached his destination. Despite its name, it looked more like a ball than an actual city. A wide dome encompassed the main exhibits along with the breeding facility, made of reflective glass that sent the sun's rays back where they came from. Scattered around lay a couple of mini domes, featuring all manner of services and attractions.

Greg wasn't interested in the savory smell of steak lingering in the air. He walked towards the main building, taking upon a grassy path surrounded by trees. It was quite cool to go through a park when so many other companies had profit as their end goal. Sapphire City was different. Or at least that's what Greg heard from the rumors. They planned to test out their domesticated dolphins with sea rescue services at first, delivering intelligent and highly trained creatures to those parts of the world that needed them most. Shark attacks were promised to lessen exponentially, and drowning cases to become obscure.

Greg smiled. Somehow, the thought of helping the world pleased him quite a bit.

He went through a pair of glass doors and headed straight towards the help desk. There was a small line of people ahead, but he had no problems waiting. He settled after a golden retriever and crossed his arms, pretending to be pensive.

“I can help you. Hey. Otter guy. I'm free."

Greg looked around until he saw a tawny lioness waving a paw at him.

“Me?" he raised his shoulders.

“Yeah. You have the look of a trainee. What are you here for?"

“To-to train, yes," Greg quickly walked towards her. “My friend hooked me up with this dolphin training membership program or something like that, and I need to find Christina Lorek? I believe that was her name?"

The feline nodded, exposing the tips of her fangs. “You got that right. She's the head of the breeding research program. You sure you've got an appointment with her? She's pretty big…"

Greg bit his lip for a moment. He never expected Christina to be so highly ranked!

“Yeah, I'm sure," he said quickly. “How can I contact her?"

“Well…" the lioness grabbed her mouse and clicked a few times. “She's kinda booked for the day, but I can give her a bump. Trainees are always a tasty treat, as she puts it."

Greg chuckled. “Yeah. Tasty."

Probably as tasty as prey was to a shark.

“Ok, it's done."

“So quick?"

“Mhm," she nodded. “You can either wait for her here or go exploring. Both options work as long as you have this nifty bracelet on you."

The lioness took Greg's hand and attached a small metal device on his wrist.

“Is this a-“

“Com watch, yeah. Phone, GPS, info station, whatever you need as long as you bring it back when your time here is done. Christina will tell you the details," she leaned forward, whispering in his ear. “Otters are a personal favorite. Just don't try to hit on her. She hates hot pants, but I've no problem with them."

Greg frowned. Hot pants? What in the world were those?

“I…yeah, thanks," he took a step back, suddenly embarrassed to feel another sapient being's breath upon his ear. “So I'm free to sniff around?"

She waved him forward. “Go wherever you want. Your watch is gonna beep if you approach prohibited areas and shock you senseless if you try to brute-force your way in. I wouldn't advise that."

“Nah," Greg laughed. “I'm not that kind of guy. Thanks for the assistance."

“My pleasure, hot pants."

He blushed fiercely and walked away, despite knowing full well she had no way of telling how much his blood quickened with all the fur getting in the way.

His device started beeping just as he was about to leave the lobby.

“The heck?" Greg retreated to a secluded spot and pressed his back against the wall. There, he inspected the object, wondering where the buttons were.

He tapped it once. A tri-dimensional menu sprouted from his wrist. Greg's eyes widened for a moment before he tapped the blinking chat notification.

The menu disappeared, and in the blink of an eye appeared the head of a woman with brown eyes, brown hair, and quite a slim pair of red framed glasses that accentuated her friendly appearance.

“Number four hundred and thirty one. How are you feeling today?"

“Eh…I'm good. Yeah, quite good, err… you're Christina, right?"

She smiled. “Yep, that's me. And you've gotta have a better name than a number. Frisky didn't tell me any details so I just added your contact in its raw, unrefined form."

“Frisky?" Greg frowned.

“Tawny fur? Playful paws?"

Greg didn't quite get what she was hinting at.

“Green eyes? No?"

“You've got a cat? I'm more of a dog guy myself. I have this border collie named-“

Christina chuckled, leaving him speechless for the duration of a very uncomfortable breath.

“You're silly. I like that."

“Thanks…I guess."

“Come on. I can't believe you're not getting my gist. Does hot pants ring any bells?"

Greg immediately froze. He took a quick look around, much to Christina's amusement, then moved the device closer to his face.

“I can't believe she told you that," he whispered.

“It's who we are, Mr four hundred and thirty one. We're shameless.“

“Greg. My name's Greg."

“Well then, Greg. I'm pleased to make your acquaintance. I still got a few walkways to traverse but I should be at your location in a couple of minutes."

“You're coming here?"

“Fast as a fox! Just don't leave the building. Tracker gets iffy if you go outside."

“I'll be right here. Take your time."

“Only when I want to," Christina smiled.

The conversation ended, allowing Greg to take a deep breath of relief. Was she really the head of an entire department? How could she be so friendly? So relaxed? So…natural? Sapphire City really had its rules upside down.

Greg waited in the same place, going through a number of conversation topics. He could never quite focus on a single one. The chattering was distracting, and those stupid watches beeped on a constant basis, stirring many reactions from the visitors that got to wear them.

“Finally!"

Greg whirled around, almost tripping in his rush.

“Quick feet there. I'm Chris, but of course you already know that from our earlier convo so I'll just skip the hand shakes and all that stuff…if you're alright with it, of course."

“Yeah. It's…I'm ok," Greg said. “Thanks for coming in fast. Phew, must've been a minute or two. Nothing awkward. Just me and my corner of…wow, I'm talking too much."

Christina chuckled. “Happens to me all the time. I hate being formal and stiff."

Nevertheless, Greg felt a bit stiff as her eyes measured him up. She seemed fixated on his face for some reason. Greg avoided her gaze, then scratched his neck, trying to find an excuse to appear distracted.

“Oh, don't worry. You're not dirty or anything. You just look better in person than you did inside that 3D interface. Your eyes stand out a bit more and your mouth isn't quite as fat."

Greg sketched a weak smile. “Thanks. You're…you look just as good, yeah."

“And extra nerdy," she chuckled and grabbed one of his hands. “C'mon. I'll show you around."

“So quick?" he reluctantly gripped her slim hand.

“It's a big place, and you'll have plenty of things to do. C'mon, it will be fun, and if you disagree I'm going to let you spend a few hours with my babies. Instant happiness guaranteed!"

Greg nodded and agreed with everything she said, pretending to be on the same level of intelligence as she was. In truth, he had no idea if she had actual kids or referred to her dolphins. Either case, he had little time to ponder. Christina had some really mean strides, and he had to struggle to keep up.

They stopped after a minute or so.

“What do you think?"

“You're fast. How many running contests did you win?"

“Not that, silly furbrains. The dome. Look ahead."

Greg was embarrassed to have his head handled like a child. Christina guided his eyes above, and when he finally saw, breath stuck in his throat. He had been so focused on avoiding other people that he failed to notice the intricate beauty of the facility, the walkways slithering between the huge exhibits, or the immense roof that was an enclosure within an enclosure. Transparent glass allowed Greg to see the world from a dolphin's point of view. Lights and shadows played along the ground as the light filtered through the water. He saw sharks, manta rays, dolphins, and many other forms of life living inside the biggest aquarium he ever set eyes upon.

“Parted jaws. I like that."

“I would've dropped them if I could…" Greg said absent mindedly.

“I had the same reaction when I first came here as well. Of course, the outside panels weren't finished and the water got a little bit too hot for our residents, so we had to contain it. What do you think?"

“It's beautiful. I…I really have no other words to describe it."

“And there's more. See those walkways?"

Greg nodded.

“Each of them is color guided. Visitors and workers alike can just pick a path and stick to it. We have a couple of other sections that further expand upon the theme and diversity of sea life. Wanna take a peek?"

“I'd love to."

For an hour or so, Greg was led around the facility and presented with the most luxurious exhibits he had the delight of seeing. Sapphire City truly was a gem. They had deep ocean exhibits, with looming depths and weird bioluminescent creatures. They had river life, with shallow waters so clear you could see right through them. Oceans, lakes, seas…these guys really seemed to have created a paradise on earth. They had a living, breathing ecosystem that needed to be maintained by thousands of employees.

It was truly a blessing to be here, and the tour was not yet over.

“Alright, now that you've seen the core of our facility, it's time to make a decision. As a trainee, you are given many opportunities to experiment and learn about your chosen animal. Do you have anything specific in mind, or can I just throw in my suggestions?"

“Dolphins," Greg said. “I'd like to expand my knowledge regarding their species."

“Male or female?"

“Both?"

“Greedy otter," Christina chuckled. “You'll be given the chance to work with both, but sadly you can only pick a single one. We had both options available a couple years ago, but we found out trainees have a much easier time handling only one assignment."

“Hmm…" Greg pondered for a moment. “What exactly do I need to do?"

Christina pointed towards the green walkway, and both of them took upon the path. Beautiful reefs and algae filled the surrounding basin, offering a feast for the eyes while the head researcher explained the benefits of each gender.

“With males, you are going to focus on extracting their seed through the use of varied pieces of equipment. A few highlights are earning the trust of a male dolphin, getting him used to your touch, and encouraging him to willingly contribute his seed to your collection kit whenever you desire."

“That sounds interesting."

“It does, right? Males are notoriously fast breeders. They can copulate every half an hour or so, and each subsequent ejaculation increases the potency of their seed. It only takes a single fraction of a drop to inseminate a receptive female."

“That's…that's something," Greg said. “What about females?"

“They might not be up your alley, unless you want to learn about ovarian cycles, birth, offspring, and all of that stuff. If I were you, I'd stick to the male."

“I'll get the male then. I had a bit of hands-on experience with them before."

“Oh really?" Christina smiled. “How much have you collected?"

“Err…it's…" Greg looked another way.

“Cat bit your tongue?"

“He didn't exactly spill where I wanted."

“In the water, eh? Don't worry. It happens. Trial and error is part of your training. We sort of encourage it here at Sapphire City. You'll see why once we head to your bunk. You ready?"

“My bunk? Do I get to stay here?"

“You'll see in a minute."

They headed underground, through a series of tunnels frequented by many other employees. Few wore the white coats assigned to doctors. Christina herself had a comfortable shirt and a pair of jeans instead of the usual business attire. In her own words, that made her feel like she belonged in a tight knit group of friends rather than being part of a constipated institution.

Greg was happy that he wasn't the odd one out, with his casual outfit and average street level demeanor. After a couple of turns, he finally stood before room four hundred thirty one. Christina waved him in.

Greg opened the door.

A sharp whistle came from the sole dolphin residing in the rectangular pool stretching ahead of him.

“He's male, and you can call him anything you like. Just make sure it fits him."

“Drat. I wanted to call him Paws."

“How would you like if I called you fins?"

“I'd like it."

Christina pinched his ear, then grabbed his waist, urging him to follow her around.

Greg found himself taken behind yet another door. He thought he'd enter a colleague's pool, but he couldn't be more wrong than that. A homely smell filled his nostrils before Christina flipped the lights on. It was another room. Or rather, a living room with a sofa, tv, a table, chairs, and everything.

“What's…what's this?"

“Your habitat," Christina waved around. “This is where you'll spend a big part of your day, relaxing from the intense working sessions you'll have with your frisky dolphin."

“It's…wow. It's more than I expected."

“Really? So quick? You'll probably faint if I show you the rest of it."

“There's more?" Greg's heart quickened with excitement.

“Duh, of course," Christina took his hand and led him on a tour of this temporary home.

This home-within-a-facility had everything: an intimate bathroom, cozy bedroom, kitchen, even a small working room equipped with weights and an exercise bike.

“Close that mouth. You've been keeping it up so long I'm afraid it's gonna come off."

Greg swallowed whatever moisture he had inside his mouth. “I'm surprised. Awed. Amazed. This looks better than my home."

“I know, right? I said the same thing first time I arrived here. Why would these whackos go to such extents to make our lives easier?"

“This is…Christina, I can't…I can't stay here. It's too much."

“What's too much?"

“The comfort. The bills! Who's going to pay for all of this?"

“You."

That word raced through his ears like a lightning strike. “I don't- I can't…I mean I'm…I ai…I-“

“Work, Greg," she cupped his hand between hers. “You're going to repay us through work. We don't ask money off our trainees."

“Re-really? This…this work must be substantial then. I'll have to clean and wash and feed the-“

“Where was your mind when I talked about your duties? You'll collect seed from your dolphin and prepare him for our breeding program, where he'll inseminate hundreds of other females. You don't honestly think that's a bad bargain, right?"

“I don't know," Greg looked into the ground. “It still sounds too good to be true. My life hasn't been a smooth ride so far."

“Cheer up, fuzzy ears. Your past can take a break. You've got a whole week of fun times ahead of you, so I suggest you saddle up, cause this is going to be one heck of a ride. Are you with me?"

“I am."

“Louder!" She slapped his hand. “Are you with me?"

“YEAH!"

“AGAIN!"

“Hell yeah!" Greg shouted so loud, the poor dolphin delved into the depths of his pool.

“Oops."

“You might want to work on your battle cry," Christina chuckled.

“Yeah, I guess so. Is this all?"

“Almost." She led Greg towards a small row of stairs that led towards a heavy looking door.

“Four hundred thirty one. That's your code," Christina put in the number and the door clicked open. “And here is your personal lab."

“Wow…" Greg gasped silently as he entered the crammed room. The air was cold, and the smell of antiseptic pleased his senses.

“You have a com station in case your watch loses signal, condoms of all shapes and sizes, tools, and of course collection kits." Christina grabbed a tray of bottled flasks. “This is where you'll store you dolphin's semen. Just remember to insert it into the freezer here, or that juice is going to go bad really fast."

“Noted," Greg said. “Thanks. For everything."

“No probs," Christina pushed herself out. “Poke me if you need anything. I'll be answering to messages far more reliably than I'll do with calls, so please keep those to a minimum."

“I'll handle myself."

“Good. Well then, I'll take my leave."

She walked just a couple of steps before she turned back. “Forgot to tell you, but trainees can stay here up to two weeks. It all depends on how quick you bond with the dolphin. If you think he's ready to be included in the breeding program, we'll take him in and get you out."

“I don't really want that," Greg gave a meek smile.

“Nobody does. That's why I suggest you make the best with the time you've got on your hands. Play with him. Love him. Treasure him…because time passes quickly. I'll see you at tomorrow's training class. Be sure to get a good night's sleep."

“Sure thing. Thanks, again."

“No problem, hot pants."

Greg had no idea what to do after Christina left. He wandered aimlessly from room to room, undecided on where to start or what to do.

“Gah," he sighed as he crashed onto the bed. “I have two weeks to bond with that dolphin. One's going to personal enjoyment, the other is thrown away like trash because I have to return to Andy and his goons. That's nasty. I also need to collect his seed at some point. Wonder if he's domesticated…"

He was tempted to get up and check, but laziness and apprehension froze him in place. Greg felt small inside such a huge facility, unworthy of the honor to receive all these boons for free. His knowledge was insufficient. His status was barely worth mentioning, half-employed, single, and on the verge of losing his job. He was broke, friendless, and certainly not the brightest mind around.

But he had a chance to change that. Fate led him here. Opportunity gave him this chance to be part of something bigger, and with that thought in mind, Greg got up and made himself two delicious sandwiches. Food had a way of returning wits to a tired mind, and after that, he had the whole day to do as he wanted.

Or did he? Greg retreated back inside his labs. Many condoms of varied shapes and sizes rested on top of the collection flasks.

“Maan," a long breath sailed under Greg's tongue as he ran his hand along the table. “I'll have to put my dolphin to work. But first, I'm going to see what this training program is about."

He focused on the schedule hologram. “Three courses, three days. That should give me plenty of time to get acquainted with dolphin anatomy before I put my partner to work. I wouldn't want to damage Sapphire City's property, or have Christina sue me for mishandling a dolphin's cock."

With a chuckle, Greg went back to bed. Something told him today was going to be a very long day.
